So what are some of your favorite old horror/sci-fi movies other than the big 7 (DRACULA, FRANKENSTEIN, WOLFMAN, MUMMY, CREATURE, PHANTOM AND INVISIBLE MAN)???
This is just to point out some enjoyable movies that some of the members here may not have seen.
I'll start with:
THE MONSTER OF PIEDRAS BLANCAS - 1959
SHE DEMONS -1958
THE ALLIGATOR PEOPLE - 1959
MAD LOVE - 1935
FROM HELL IT CAME - 1957
I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE - 1943
NIGHT TIDE - 1963
The Old Dark House is probably my favorite, even counting the big 7. Beyond that, I love all Val Lewton horrors, The Blob and Mr. Sardonicus.
It may be heresy to say it here, but Mad Love is probabaly my favorite horror film of the 30s.
Have to agree with the Lewton films, especially Cat People, I walked with a Zombie, and The Seventh Victim.
After Creature, my favorite Universals of the 50s are It Came from Outer Space and The Thing That Couldn't Die.
Just about any William Castle, esp. The Tingler and 13 Ghosts.
Carnival of Souls is one of my all-time favorites--just about the best movie ever in terms of dollar-to-chills ratio.
Also: The Werewolf, The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake..... stop me now.
MDG
I BURY THE LIVING - 1958
GIANT FROM THE UNKNOWN - 1958
THE VAMPIRE - 1957
HIDEOUS SUN DEMON - 1959
THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS - 1946
THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE - 1962
... and I agree about THE FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE and CARNIVAL OF SOULS.
SPIDER BABY
IT CONQUERED THE WORLD
MONSTER ON CAMPUS
IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE
THE MANSTER
THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI
THE BRAINIAC
Even though it's not Universal, King Kong should be included in the "big" list.
I like Eurohorror, especially the films of Mario Bava and Dario Argento. I like some of Lucio Fulci's films. I like the Blind Dead movies, the Manchester Morgue, Wicker Man, Horror Express, Witchfinder General, and I hate to admit it, but I like Cannibal Holocaust. Haven't seen anything by Jesse Franco that really blew me away yet. I've just recently started to seriously get into Paul Naschy. He's pretty cool. And of course I like Hammer films, especially Curse of the Werewolf and anything with Cushing and/or Lee.
I also love grindhouse exploitation from any country. Night of the Living Dead is one of my favorite films. I like most of Romero's films, especially The Crazies, Martin and Dawn of the Dead. I like the first half of John Carpenter's career. I like Bob Clark's horror films. I like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, but Tobe Hooper is generally not my favorite director. I'm equally underwhelmed by Wes Craven. I'm not really in love with any of Craven's films, though I can appreciate some from a historical perspective. I really like Jeff Lieberman and wish he'd made more films in his prime. Squirm is one of my favorite films.
I like drive-in trash with no redeeming value, stuff like Shriek of the Mutilated and Dracula vs Frankenstein.
I love 70s Bigfoot films, no matter how bad they are. Later Bigfoot films I take on a case-by-case basis.
I'm a big fan of the Blood Island movies from the Philippines. I plan to devote a Show-n-Tell to this series soon. The Chlorophyll Monster creeps me out.
I'm crazy for Mexican horror and Santo. I love the serious, gothic stuff, like The Witch's Mirror, and the goofy stuff, like The Brainiac.
I like Toho horror, like Matango, and Godzilla movies, especially the early ones. I also like the Daimajin films and some of the Gamera films. Recent J-horror is pretty good, if over-hyped. I like Ringu, Ju-on and the handful of Takashi Miike films I've seen.
And of course I love COFFIN JOE!
I pretty much love horror, period.
As is (I'm sure) the case with most of you I could talk movies all day (and night, then the next day as well) so I won't bore you with an overly long post. I'll just list a few of my favorites. I LOVE...
Haxan: Witchcraft through the Ages -- Under appreciated silent film about witchcraft, features a coven of witches lining up to kiss the devils ass.
Madlove, but since its already been mentioned here I want to give a big thumbs up to Werewolf of London -- I like the monster makeup in this film a little more then the Chaney Wolfman makeup (and I'm sure saying that won't win me many friends)
Not really a horror film but everyone MUST see Night of the Hunter -- Stars Robert Mitchum as a sadistic preacher and Charles Lawton in his only turn as director (and I wish he had directed more)
Faster Pussy Cat, Kill! Kill! - Again, not horror or sci-fi but OH MY GOD is this a great movie. I waited years to finally get a chance to see this and I was not disappointed. Great dialogue and the one and only Tura Satana (comes on TCM once in a while)
At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul -- Of course Ray will back me up on this (since he is the new Coffin Joe!). The first Coffin Joe film and a film that will leave its mark on you. Simply amazing. Even my wife (who often does not care for this type of stuff) liked this film. Really cool movie and once you see it you forget it. (comes on IFC somethimes)
I'll cut it off here because I don't want to just start listing movie after movie that I love. But seriously, if you have not seen any of the above check them out.
Ray, in saying the big 7 I really was only trying to make sure people didn't come on here listing films that we would obviously all know about already. Of course Kong would really be the BIG #1!!
When I started this I didn't really intend to critique or comment on any films that anyone listed but what the hell, I'm gonna do it anyways.
Nekro, I still find it really odd that you love OLD DARK HOUSE so much. You must really see something I don't. Same with MR. SARDONICUS. I think they're both kind of a mess and not very exciting at all.
MDG, I think MAD LOVE is VERY under appreciated. Nobody ever really talks about it but it's such a well made film. Peter Lorre has never been creepier or better.
fmofmpls, MANSTER is a lot of fun as is MONSTER ON CAMPUS (which for some reason really surprised me).SPIDER BABY is an all time favorite even before Sid Haig's recent re-discovery. I've been a huge Sid fan for a long time. I especially love him in all the stuff from the Philippines (Woman Hunt is the best!) which brings me to...
Ray, I agree on the Blood Island films. Those things are so much fun and the monsters are just amazing! Did you know that a company just released the soundtrack to MAD DOCTOR of BLOOD ISLAND? It's really good, here is a link
http://www.elyseeproductions.com/
I also agree on the Bigfoot movies. This past summer some friends and I had a Bigfoot night at my friend Jimmy's backyard drive-in (14' x 8' screen). We grilled Bigfoot burgers as you can see below

I think Wes Craven is a total hack. For Lieberman I would have to pick BLUE SUNSHINE over SQUIRM. I've never been a fan of Argento and I think Fulci is one of the most over rated directors out there. Other than ZOMBIE and FOUR Of the APOCALYPSE his stuff is all crap. And those two aren't even that great.
And here we go, I must be alone in this but I think WITCHFINDER GENERAL is a total bore fest. I can't find a single nice thing to say about it yet everyone loves it! Oh well.
Josh, HAXAN is amazing and as far as favorite Wolfman makeup I'd have to go with Oliver Reed in CURSE of the WEREWOLF.

My 20-year-old son loves Night of the Hunter and is going to a screening tonight, even though he's seen it plenty of times (and has the DVD).
A couple of years ago, we went to a presentation by a guy from UCLA who found Laughton's outtakes and put together over two hours of alternate takes.

Yeah, but the short dialogue between Edward Brophy and Ted Healy (of all people) just before Brophy is executed is one of my favorite scenes of all time.
MDG
ZOMBO, I totally agree with you about Witchfinder General. I have heard time and time again about how this is an amazing film but when I watched it I was very under whelmed. It was kind of a bore and had a few unforgivable continuity errors. It is such a ballyhooed film that I assume I must have missed something so I am willing to give it another chance (I plan on getting the new MGM DVD). However, its good to hear from someone else that did not think this film was the masterpiece it is made out to be. As far as Oliver Reed in Curse of the Werewolf, that is some kick ass makeup and might just edge out the Henry Hull makeup. Certainly Oliver Reed was a much meaner werewolf then Hull.
I've got your back! But I must gently correct you on one thing - Mojica is still the one and only "real" Coffin Joe. (I don't want the boss gouging my eyes out.) I don't know what the future holds for this franchise, but I am just happy to have been a small part of it.
Incidentally, just today I received one of those "elf myself" online Christmas cards from the producers of the new Coffin Joe movie. There is the three of them, dancing like jib jab elves.

I ordered the Blood Island soundtrack CD as soon as it was released. I'd love to see the same company release the Dracula vs Frankenstein score.
Anyone who holds a Bigfoot outdoor movie night - with Bigfoot burgers, no less - is truly a scholar and a gentleman.

For B/W it'd be:
Them!
The Invisible Ray
It Came From Outer Space
Invasion of the Saucer Men
But my real passion is for 60's/70's cheapies like:
Eddie Romero's Blood Island series
Al Adamson/Sam Sherman follies like "Dracula Vs Frankenstein"
Anything Larry Buchanan directed (ie Zontar, Mars Needs Women)
Ray Dennis Steckler
Some Hammer Films
Amicus Horror Anthologies
I'm a Horror fan until Slasher pics started taking over, not knocking the genre, it's just not for me.
By the way, above I typed "Really cool movie and once you see it you forget it." in reference to the first Coffin Joe film. Of course I meant that you NEVER forget it. typo
NOSFERATU
KLAXAN/WITCHCRAFT THROUGH THE AGES
IT CONQUERED THE WORLD
THE BLOB
CIRCUS OF HORROR
HORRORS OF THE BLACK MUSEUM
FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE
THE BRAINIAC
SPIDER BABY
HORROR HOTEL
THE DEATH CURSE OF TARTU
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS
THE HOWLING
Those are the ones that come quickly to my frosted mind...
M with Peter Lorre
The Corman/Vincent Price/Poe movies
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA with Rains
the Laughton HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME
FREAKS
ISLAND OF LOST SOULS
THE OLD DARK HOUSE
I'll watch and enjoy just about anything that's not boring, but it is very difficult to select favorites from among such a vast array of wonderful choices. There are a few that thrilled and frightened me when I first saw them and have stuck with me over the years for various reasons--
ISLAND OF LOST SOULS
THE WEREWOLF
KALTIKI THE IMMORTAL MONSTER
THE MONSTER FROM GREEN HELL
I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF
Forgot THE WEREWOLF and TEENAGE WEREWOLF, but yup, those are in there, too.
DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE (March)
HORROR OF DRACULA
BLACK SUNDAY
M
Definitely some of my faves there.
Shawn, I think I long ago gave up trying to figure out why I like some things and you don't. It's still shocks me that you liked "Luther The Geek", too.
Ray, feel no shame about "Cannibal Holocaust"! It's one of my all time favorites! :)
Others I like, since we've veered somewhat toward the more modern, include Cemetery Man, Nekromantik (but you probably guessed that!) and Blood and Donuts. Back to the older, you can add The 4D Man to my previous list, as well as the superb British ghost film, "The Innocents".
Coffin Joe rules (we need a 12" figure, are you listening Sideshow?), but don't waste any more time on Jess Franco. About once a year I give him another try and he almost always lets me down. The only one of his movies I sort of liked was "Love Letters Of A Portugese Nun". That said, I too love just about all horror and will probably continue to subject myself to his movies, so long as I don't have to pay money to do it.
Nosferatu
Mark of the Vampire
Return of the Vampire
At midnight I'll take your soul
Gargoyles
Seventh voyage of Sinbad

Invaders from Mars
The uninvited
Night of the living dead " the scariest movie ever made !"
War of the worlds
It the terror from outer space
Earth VS the flying saucers
Them
The Haunting
Just a few but all classics..
Best..

I don't know what will come of it, but earlier this year I contacted every major action figure company and gathered information to give to Coffin Joe's people for the express purpose of making Coffin Joe action figures. I did this at the request of his producers, so they are definitely interested in entering the toy market. So maybe we will see some Coffin Joe toys in 2008. Incidentally, there is a vintage large-size Coffin Joe doll that was produced at the time of the original films. His son, Crounel Marins, confirmed that it exists. It stood 12-14 inches tall. Coffin Joe was heavily merchandised in the 60s. But unfortunately, very little of that stuff survives today.

That's great to hear. It would be fantastic to have a Coffin Joe figure. I do think he'd be best represented in 12" doll form though, regardless of who actually made it.
Regarding the vintage doll, wow, just like that I have a new holy grail! Dammit. lol. I've looked pretty frequently for vintage Coffin Joe merchandise, but outside of one old poster never found anything. I passed on the poster since it wasn't for a horror film. It looked like an adventure movie. Might have been "Sexo E Sangue na Trilha do Tesouro", but don't quote me on that, my memory stinks. I didn't like it enough to go through the trouble of trying to find someone who spoke Portugese to help me with the auction.

To this day, I still don't understand how everything vintage that was related to Coffin Joe has fallen off the face of the earth like it has...it's kind of odd. Some time ago, irritated by the lack of a Coffin Joe action figure, I actually made my own, using a Mego body with a customized head and clothing pilfered from other figures. I even tediously glued thin strips of plastic onto the figure's hands to make the nails. It turned out okay, but it just wasn't...well, official. But hearing this news about future merchandising gives me hope. Maybe the day will come when I can walk into my local toy store and be able to buy a REAL Coffin Joe figure. Maybe even with eye-gouging action. No,
definitely with eye-gouging action.
Yes! And it must come with live tarantulas!!! :)
Actually, and it sounds like Ray would know better than I, but I seem to recall reading once that much of his merchandising was forcibly destroyed due to the nature of his films and how they conflicted with the views of the time, particularly religious views. If true, it would certainly account for the lack of it today.
So they forcibly destroyed his merchandise? I knew he was much hated by Brazil's military dictatorship, but I never knew they went that far. That's just horrible.
I haven't heard about his merchandise being systematically destroyed. I think it's more of a cultural thing. The United States is kind of unique in the way we save old pop culture junk. People in most countries just throw that stuff away.
Hey Nicole and Nekro, I've got a pair of neato Coffin Joe items to show you. I don't want to hijack this thread, so I will start a new one in the movie memorabilia section.
How come nobody ever mentions "Godzilla VS Hedorah" aka "Godzilla VS the Smog Monster"? That is one of my favorite Godzilla flicks. I didn't see anyone mention "The Eye" either. Hollywood is doing a remake of "The Eye", which I will boycott because I love the Chinese version so much & Hollywood is... Hollywood. I'm not sure if anybody would consider "Ichi The Killer" a horror film, but it has some wild stuff in it!
Lastly, I don't care what my brothers say, "Tarantula" was a great movie. I also LOVE "Kingdom Of The Spiders"! What could be better than seeing thousands of spiders swarming people or William Shatner being bitten on the face by, like, 50 tarantulas?
Spiders crawling over people is what made me want to watch "This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse" thanks to the commercial I saw on IFC! 8)
I love The Incredible Shrinking Man and Them.
I never liked Godzilla vs Hedorah that much until I saw the DVD. Seeing it complete, subtitled, in its original aspect ratio gave me a new appreciation for it. It really has a great vibe and visual style.
Tarantula is probably my favorite giant bug movie. THEM! is a more serious and tightly produced film, but Tarantula is more fun. Both THEM! and Tarantula stand head and shoulders above the pack.
I've got The Eye on DVD. It's not bad, but I don't like it as much as recent Asian horror hits like Ringu or Ju-on. I like Takashi Miike very much. I've only seen a handful of his films, but I've liked every one. I would consider Ichi a quasi-horror film, maybe action-horror. I was very impressed with Ichi. I've been meaning to watch that again.
Miike is not always good, but he's pretty much always interesting. Visitor Q and City of Lost Souls being two of my favorites. Zebraman was good, but not as good as I'd hoped for.I really need to see "The Great Yokai War" (which a buddy of mine had a small part in) and his remake of Django looks crazy. Never cared much for two popular Miike films, the aforementioned Ichi and also Fudoh. Always thought both were overrated.
I remember "The Eye" as being pretty boring right up until the "Why are you sitting in my chair?" scene which scared the life outta me. Didn't care for the finale either, but unlike a lot of people, I really enjoyed both sequels more than the original. Each one seemed to offer more than the same old asian horror crap that's being regurgitated ad nasuem these days. There was a time I loved Asian horror, but I feel that fad lost it's luster about 4 years ago and now I couldn't be more sick of it. I can't believe they are even remaking the awful "One Missed Call". ::)
Glad to hear there's no truth to what I read about the Coffin Joe stuff though. I'd like to believe it was not an outright lie, so I'll assume perhaps it was an isolated incident that was exaggerated. I just wish I could remember where I heard it.
Tarantula, The Blob, the Birds and Them.
The Blob terrified me as a child because I knew it could slip in under my door......
Chuck
I am a big fan of the cheesy, sunlit horrors of the 70's...Beware! The Blob is a big fave (actually pretty decent fun), and so is The Incredible Melting Man (really awful).
I got to see Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster a few years ago in the theater as part of a Godzilla festival and I really enjoyed it. What a strange film in the series. Way out there but cool.
I liked Godzilla vs Hedorah. It's REEEEALLY strange! Got some oddball stuff in it.
I think my favorites of the Godzilla sequels are vs. the Sea Monster, Monster Zero and King Kong vs. Godzilla. Monster Zero I got to see projected on the big screen once, and it was nice. At its best, the series is capable of creating some very Disneyesque fantasy.
The Walking Dead, Curse of the Demon, Gorgo, and Incredible Shrinking Man.
If nobody else will say it, then I'll say it... BLACULA.
Blacula is really good, and seems to have gotten better over the years.
Did I mention Horror Express? Great 70's horror flick.
41 posts, and only 4 people list Them! as a favorite monster movie? Scandalous! :o
I'd have to say Them! is my favorite, followed by It Came From Outer Space - not that you get to see much there. Do the Mu-tants count, from This island Earth? And is it me or did the missile strikes from that movie presage the Missile Command game of the 1970s?
SO many to choose from:
I really LOVE Island of Terror, and Fiend without a Face too. And The Tingler, all with creepy crawly beasties.
I've been ignoring this thread just because there are waaaaay to many films that fit the requirements than I could say. But perhaps I will throw in these two Beast from 20000 Fathoms and of course since we've broken past the 50's era Psycho is fair game.
The Mole People is also one of my favorites!
BK
Here are my picks:
Not Of This Earth w/Paul Birch (those creepy blank eyes)
The Hypnotic Eye(pretty women disfiguring themselves)
Theater Of Blood(Vincent Price doing in his enemies via Shakespeare)
both versions of Invaders of Mars
and Strange Invaders.
Okay...I have a special fondness for;
The Monolith Monsters
The Wicker Man
Black Sunday
Curse of the Demon
Invisible Invaders
The Beast With Five Fingers
Killer Shrews
Hideous Sun Demon
Eyes of Fire
The Resurrected
I love:
Hideous Sun Demon
Tarantula
Them!
Incredible Shrinking Man
It! The Terror from Beyond Space
Monster on Campus
The Blob

Them!, IMHO.
I like Tombunga the tree monster from the movie "From Hell It Came" It is one of my non-Universal guilty pleasures. But we can't leave out Murder Legere from White Zombie or The Devil Bat either.

There are so many others that I like and own, but I pared the list down to movies I would be in the mood to see almost anytime at all.

Like many, I could make a long list, but here are a few favorites:
Village of the Damned--1960
X the Unknown--1956
Quatermass and the Pit--1967
Night of the Demon--1957
Night of the Living Dead--1968
The Monster that Challenged the World--1957
The Monolith Monsters--1957
Island of Terror--1966
The Gorgon--1964
It! The Terror from Beyond Space--1958
Godzilla Movies
Curse Of The Undead (The first vampire/western)
House Of Dark Shadows
Creature From The Black Lagoon
Godzilla ( pretty much all of them)
Valley Of Gwangi
The Brain That Wouldn't Die (my favorite bad movie)
High Plains Drifter/Pale Rider (these films are westerns, that may or may not, be about vengeful spirits. You decide)
Legend Of Hell House
The Haunting
And on, and on and on.........
I'm not sure how classic some of my favs are, but:
Exorcist (I still can barely watch this by myself)
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark--the cheesy 70s tv movie with the furry creatures from the fireplace
Plan 9 From Outer Space---delightfully awful film
70s King Kong---Jessica Lange was extremely hot

Exorcist still creeps me out, too. It's the only one I have trouble watching alone. Kinda funny that Linda Blair turned out to be such a fine example of hotness but her as a kid scares the crap out of me. Zombie Confused >:D
