Title: Monster Cartoon Shows
Post by: horrorhunter on November 08, 2015, 10:09:52 PM
This thread deals with some of our favorite animated cartoon shows featuring monsters.

The Groovie Goolies (1970-1972) is one that many fans fondly remember. It was produced by Filmation and spun off from the Sabrina, The Teenage Witch cartoon. Both ran on Saturday Morning which was the Kid Holy Day of the week.  ;D No school, cereal, toy commercials, and hours of cartoons on each major network all through the '60s onward. Yep, that was Kid Heaven.

The Herculoids (1967-1969) is one of my faves. Monsters, monsters, monsters... the good guys are monsters, the bad guys are monsters, almost everyone is either a monster or monster-fighting hero. Tundro is my favorite Herculoid. Love those energy rocks. Hanna-Barbera produced a real gem here for us Monsterkids. To me it was second only to Jonny Quest, and edged out my third favorite by a dragon's nose (Zok's  ;)) which was Space Ghost (the real one, not that Coast To Coast poppycock.  ;D).

Jonny Quest (1964/1965) is my favorite cartoon of all time, and it featured monsters in nearly every episode. It was produced by Hanna-Barbera and ran in prime time on ABC on early Friday nights. It was designed by the great comic book artist Doug Wildey. The high quality of the animation was groundbreaking for a weekly show and caused Hanna-Barbera to abandon a second season- it turned out to be too expensive and time consuming to continue producing. But, we have those 26 excellent episodes easily attainable on DVD to enjoy. There were many later incarnations which were good, but could never match the quality of those original shows. The theme music really kicked butt, too.

This great 3-part documentary will bring you up to speed on all things Jonny Quest:

Ignore that "No Longer Available" message at the bottom of the video postings. They still play. That's some sort of You Tube glich.

I really like the old Milton The Monster show, as well. I had the Milton Bradley board game when I was a kid. I replaced it with a pretty nice one a few years ago off eBay for around $15. Here's a pic off the net:

I also bought the DVD set for the Milton.. eps. It brought back good memories of a fun show.  :)

Speaking of cartoon show memorabilia, it's a real shame there were no playsets made for Hanna-Barbera's action-adventure shows like Jonny Quest, Space Ghost, or The Herculoids. Marx or MPC could have made some cool playsets for these shows in the '60s. Missed opportunity.

Oh, these shows were amazing! I remember watching these shows with my brother and sister. Now, they are married and I spend time with their kids watching series by Andy Yeatman (https://www.allmusic.com/artist/andy-yeatman-mn0003649472) online. This is the best part of being the youngest at home. I can enjoy with everybody.
