While surfing about for images for Return of the Vampire for a project I am eventually going to tackle--I found an actual color portrait (not colorized---actually photographed in color back in the day) of Lugosi in his Vampire attire. The poster from CHFB said it was the only known portrait taken of Lugosi in color.
Now---I dunno if any of this is true or not--but I had never seen this before, and it looks quite cool. So--enjoy!

Great find, Anton. I've never seen this. I can't believe his face looks so chubby (kinda reminds me of the Sideshow 8" Dracula).
I was thinking the same thing Mord. To me something seems off. Could just be me. And maybe its just that I'm not used to seeing him in color.

Its from the 40's, hence how it came up in google image search for "Return of the Vampire". He does look a little more robust than his Ed Wood years. But remember--he was rather portly in A&C Meet Frankie in 48--just a few years after this portrait is supposed to have been taken. It does bear a healthy resemblance to Sideshow's 8 inch Bela. I immediately right clicked and saved regardless of what its origins are. Because its super cool. Had to share. 8)
Anton, that is an incredible find.
Beautiful!
It's been over at the CHFB for some time, and it's legit.

Yes--as stated thats where I found it! It came up in a
google image sort search. Its awesome to know its legit!!!!!!!
Do you or anyone else there know anymore about whose collection its in, etc? Is anyone making any actual photographic copies? IE does anyone have a negative and the rights to reproduce? I'm sure whoever owns it could sell them if they were so inclined.
Its a really cool pic. Its like running across those Life magazine color Creature pics a few years back. I was floored then.
I was just as floored by this portrait. But, alot of members here, arent members there. So....I re-shared and credited the board from whence it came. Its a beautiful shot!
It was "dug up" by Monstuhkid Ted Newsom:

(And the CHFB is THE "go-to" place for classic monster movies, on the same level as the UMA's holding of that award in the monster toys arena.)

Very cool! Had never seen this before either.

Well--while I am sure CFHB may be the happening joint--I still prefer it here. While there are still a few outbursts and misunderstandings from time to time here---generally speaking, its pretty calm here. If someone is rude to another, they usually apologize. If I am not mistaken, Ted Newsome was the one behind the "Rip Distinctive Dummies" apart fiasco over there. Which was a big turn off. Especially to those who like their products. I don't believe that was ever amicably resolved. :'(
But his discovery of this color Bela photo is nice.
Oh, AP, you won't get any argument from me on that point: there's less nastiness at the UMA, and when it does happen here the Mods (generally...) handle it quicker and better.
But the CHFB is still a place where folks like Gary Don Rhodes, Rick Baker, Tom Weaver, Don Glut, and many other top-flight Monsterkids have actually been active, posting members. That's hard to beat.
Best,
-Craig
I have a 1940s newspaper somewhere in my collection that has a huge image of this photo- in color- on the front page of the "entertainment" section, or something like that. This is all legit.

Hello Craig,
Just curious, what is the general perception of UMA over at the CHFB? Do they perceive us as "that bunch of toy collectors", or is it more a case of them not wanting to post in more than one place for convenience sake? I was just wondering if that bit of venom from Newsom towards DD is indicative of a pervading attitude toward monster toy collecting (and UMA), or just an unusual flash of rudeness.
I've visited CHFB a few times and I know they have sections on all aspects of monster fandom including toys, but I was wondering why so many of the so called "top-flight Monsterkids" choose CHFB as the
in place over UMA. CHFB always struck me as rather lackluster, not to mention ad-stricken. UMA seems to have less traffic which in some ways is a good thing. I have nothing against CHFB, never had any interaction with anyone over there. I'm just curious as to your take on CHFB's opinion of UMA. Thanks.
-Michael
I can tell you my opinion of the CHFB.........but it would violate the terms of UMA membership. ;)

>what is the general perception of UMA over at the CHFB? ... I was just wondering if that bit of venom from Newsom towards DD is indicative of a pervading attitude toward monster toy collecting (and UMA), or just an unusual flash of rudeness.<
I've never seen that attitude, no. As you say, toys ARE discussed there; and many folks there (like me!) love them. As far as Ted, I don't recall the conflict you mention well. But he's a smart, decent guy, and his feelings may be because he actually works in show biz a bit, and may not like creators/owners to loose money on such "grey market" things?
>I was wondering why so many of the so called "top-flight Monsterkids" choose CHFB as the in place over UMA.<
I think we're talking apples and oranges. When a big toy question comes up there, I've often referred folks here - because this place is THE place in that niche.
But the rightful place of the CHFB?
When real working folks in the biz have posted there (Rick Baker - Don Glut - Tom Weaver - Ted Newsom - David Skal - Bill Warren - etc.), the facts speak for themselves. As does the case that genuine genre mysteries such as Karloff's "other" time in the Monster makeup, and Lugosi's audible dialogue in FMTW, were solved there.
-Craig
P.S. - And I say this as a member who spends very little time there right now, because as I wrote above, trollishness is too lightly handled at the CHFB. But the facts are the facts.

Thanks for the info, Craig.
Makes sense that genre pros would frequent one site for reasons of practicality, and CHFB has become that site.
Like you, I'll stick to UMA for the most part. It just seems more friendly here. :)
