Title: The Crimson Ghost Mask Room (my collection)
Post by: Crimson Ghost on July 04, 2015, 12:32:40 AM

Hello!

My name is Rudy and I am a UMA newbie. I've been collecting all things monster my whole life, but I've focused more on my mask collecting in the past ten years. I built a dedicated dungeon to house my ever changing collection. Classic Don Post is my main focus. I've been on other forums over the years and have always wanted to join the UMA. My collection has changed since these photos were taken, the last pics will be a more accurate look at what is here. I will update more soon, I will have new pieces coming in. I'll add more details on some some of my favorite and more unique pieces too.

Thank you!

Amazing collection!! And wonderful display, too.

Now I must ask a question... You have one mask in there that I have been looking for, and have not seen, in over 25 years.

I'm talking about the brown zombie with the bright green web of slime over his left eye.
You can just barely see him in a few of these photos. The best look at him, is in your seventh photo down, on the shelf directly to the left of the Tor Johnson and Fly Head masks.

I first saw that green slime zombie in a costume shop when I was a teenager in the 1980's. And it was love at first sight. I wanted to own it so badly! But a high-end mask like that, in those days, was usually priced at $70.00 minimum, which seemed insanely expensive to me back then! I was only a kid, and my only income was my lawn-mowing allowance!
I would stop and stare at that mask for a while, every time I visited that store. I seem to remember it sitting on display, unsold for a few years. ...And then suddenly it was just gone. That was the last time I laid eyes on it.

That face has haunted my imagination ever since. Over the years I have put green slime on many of the zombies I draw in my comic books and horror illustrations, just because of that mask.

It was an unexpected thrill to see it lurking, just off to the side, in your photos today. This also gives me hope that it might still be possible to track down a copy for myself.

I've got a fun little collection of Halloween masks but I am not deeply involved enough in the collector market, to know: Just how popular, or obscure, is that mask anyway? Is it easy to find these days?
I never knew the exact name of the mask or the company that manufactured it. Any information you can share would be greatly appreciated!

Dear Crimson Ghost--

Welcome!! Thank you so much for showing us your marvelous collection. There is not a single dud in the entire set! Wow.

I particularly like your Topstone collection

Rudy has the best vintage mask collection I've ever seen. I'm sure there are "better" ones, but they are cloistered in secrecy by their misanthropic owners, so phooey on them. What's the point in having a collection if you don't share it? Rudy has obviously invested a lot of time and love into his home museum. And of course, being a Topstone collector, I like the way he proudly displays Topstone masks alongside the rarest Don Post pieces.

Amazing collection CG.I keep coming back to look at your collection, trying to decide which one I like the best.Kinda like looking through an issue of Famous Monsters and trying to decide which mask I'd buy if I had the money only better.

If this isn't a warm welcome, I don't know what is! Thanks for the awesome comments, I wish you guys could walk into the room, it is so different then looking at the photos. It was some of Rays photos years ago that pushed me into joining masks forums and get more serious about the presentation of my collection. I'll post a few shots of the room build, it was the first thing I did when I moved into my new home.

Bryan, the mask you are referring to is a Be Something Studios "Corpse". The mask came out in the late 70's. I've only seen a few copies surface in the past couple of years or so. It is possible to locate one but it will take time. I have a pretty extensive BSS collection and I know a lot of guys that collect them. I will see if one is available somewhere, they should be in the $50-$80 range. Mine was a NOS copy so I paid a little more then that I think. I love BSS masks! they were a big part of my childhood! growing up in the a South Chicago suburbs those masks were everywhere for Halloween.

Here is a quick look at the start of my room. My new house had a oddball shaped 24' x 12' room in the basement the previous owners built and it was perfect for what I had in mind for the masks. I paneled the whole room in faux red brick paneling from Lowes, then I painted the paneling to look like a castle or dungeon. I used to do a lot of haunted house painting and prop building, so I always wanted to incorporate that into my home some day. After the paneling was completed (which took forever!) my friend and I built custom shelves across the walls, the widest ones are 12' long. I then painted them to look like concrete. I then blacked out the ceiling and added a new type of vinyl flooring and LED track lights.

Thanks for the helpful info on the Corpse! Yes - the version shown in this smaller photo is the one I remember, and the one I prefer. If the original came out in the 70's then this must have been an updated 1980's version.

I am not surprised it was a Be Something Studios mask! I should have guessed.
I grew up in Ohio, not far from Chicago, so BSS masks were very common when I was a kid, too. Being so young at the time, I did not realize they were all made by the same company. All I knew back then, was that there were several amazing, expensive Halloween masks that I could stare at for hours... but never afford! I had to save up my allowance for weeks just to buy the cheaper Topstone knock-off versions! Haha.
It's only been in recent years that I've explored old Halloween masks on the internet, and learned that so many of the cool masks I admired in my youth were all made by BeSomethingStudios. But I have not seen this particular mask pop up anywhere.

I guess one of the nice things about being a grownup is, now we can finally afford this stuff!! Haha.
Speaking of which... I have a Corpse to go searching for...

Thanks again!
Your collection is incredible.

Once again, so good to see you here Rudy / Crimson Ghost and you already know how much I love your mask museum. I think you'll find the UMA boards rather lively for a bunch of guys (and gals) that like dead stuff.  :) I have a question for you regarding the Don Post re-issue Mummy masks, in particular the Mummy B. When I first started collecting masks I picked up a Mummy B that was nice but apparently was the victim of the dreaded "Mask Rust" which I was unaware of at the time. He was a mustard brown color and even though he was depicted like that on the box....

....I was informed by the mask collecting communities elder statesmen that the original color of the Mummy B was a bright crayon yellow as depicted in this photo of them in production at Don Post Studios.

Now that I've been doing this for a while I've never, ever seen one that was that color, ever. I recently picked up another copy. Here's a pic.

I'd say the majority of them that I've seen look like this but never any lighter, only darker. I'm assuming that either all the yellow copies turned this color with age or the color in that Don Post photo is off. Do you have any input on this? I'd love your take on it. Thanks!, and again welcome to the UMA!!

All of the reissue masks were notorious for having the rust on them. I've never seen a mummy that vibrant and yellow looking ever. My guess is, that particular paint scheme faded or turned. I can ask some people I know that worked in the studio on them. In most cases, colors may look one way in a photograph (like that yellow look) but actually looked a lot different in person. Certain colors never seem to photograph right when I shoot masks. I almost bet that they weren't super yellow in person. I can't remember how they looked back then to be honest.

This is a mask I've been after for some. I was able to get my hands on a very rare blank from the original 70's Don Post Deluxe Cousin Eerie mold. The mask is as rare as hens teeth. I had a great picture of the 1972 DP catalog Eerie, so I sent my blank to Rob Tharp in California to replicate that old look. Rob was the guy painting them back when the photo was taken! Not only did he do a excellent job painting it, but he actually had the old original hair material that was used on the Eerie mask by the studio. That was the icing on the cake! I then had Dante Renta foam fill the piece and he is finally home now sitting next to Uncle Creepy.

That's amazing! I've been collecting since 2002, and it has always been said that the Deluxe Eerie mold was destroyed long ago, this from veteran Post employees and others close to the company.

If that was a casting made many, many years ago, it looks great!  Whatever the story, it's a great piece.

Wow, I wouldn't have guessed that the room itself was such a DIY project. I figured it was a pre-existing room that you just dressed up a bit. Very nice work. It makes sense that you were once in the haunt business. I can see it reflected in the room.

Thanks for the input CG! I know exactly what you mean about photographing masks. I've taken pictures of some of my masks that looked completely different color wise in the photo than they do in person. It's my opinion that the masks were never that yellow to begin with and the color is just off in that photograph. Would be nice to be able to verify that though. Thanks again for your thoughts on the topic!  :)

Magnificent collection and breathtaking display.
I don't collect soft masks anymore, but when I did that is the room I always dreamed of.

Sadly, living in NY a 12x24 area isn't a room, it is an apartment!

I've been looking at the pix for nearly a half hour. I salute you sir.
Please know I shall live vicariously through you.

Gory, a friend of mine who actually worked on the re-issue project at the factory told me that they were not yellow, but painted a "Fullers Earth" color. I think whoever saw the old photos were thrown off by whatever color they appeared to look, which was off. He will be touching more on the subject with me today, hopefully with more photos!

The Eerie project was so much fun, and yes, the fact that Rob Tharp was painting them back in 72 made it even cooler! I was born in 72' so I have been getting a few masks custom made to the old 1972 catalog photos. The VL Zombie is also a 72' mask. I just love the nostalgia of having pieces from the year I was born.

That's great news CG! I always suspected that was the case. I've had some very respected collectors swear by that photo but it never made sense to me that the color would change that drastically. It seems the copy I recently picked up is pretty close to original color. Looking forward to any further info. Thanks!!

That's cool. Be sure to invite VL Zombie and Cousin Eerie to your birthday party!  ;D

Here is a new one I just had made. I scored a rare copy out the 70's Mr. Hyde "B" original Don Post mold. I had Cathy Tharp paint it and Rob haired it to resemble the 1972 catalog shot. I believe six copies came out of the old mold at some point, I now own two of them The other is pictured above on my last pics of the mask room, painted and haired to resemble the film monster look.

This will be the second copy to resemble the 72/73 catalog shot.

This Mummy was done by Rob in actual Fullers Earth, not just the FE "color" like the others might be. You can see the actual color in this shot, thats the way it appears in person (The Mummy on the right) The other Mummy is a rare one off prototype out of the studio mold that went out the back door of DPS, late 80's I believe.

I've been painting a blank from the original 70's DP Mutant by Bill Malone. My goal was to replicate a old original copy that  collector owns, it is scuffed up and dirty and really shows its age..I love it! I decided to try and copy that look. I am not finished yet but here are some progress shots. I plan on painting another
]Mutant later with much more detail.. the old production copies were pretty basic like this. I got my colors nice and weathered, the next step is to rub in the dirt and dust. Its tough to get the colors right in pictures, but they are very close to the original shot I posted. I will knock down the eyes a bit too soon so they won't pop too much, I want them to look old.

I am a huge fan of Halloween 3 (season of the witch), and it's great to see them as part of your collection.  What bothered me about the Don Post final reisue, was how uncomfortable the fit on the skull mask was.  I owned one of the skull masks (wore one in the theater to see the film when it came out), it was a favorite mask of mine, and I always liked how comfortable it was.  I located one from the 1960's on Ebay after that, and it was as comfortable as I remember.  I can't say the same about the pumpkin or witch, because I never had those.

Those are some great looking Mummies! I like the Fullers Earth color on that one. Has a bit of a green tint to it that gives him a moldy look. The eye in each one really sells it too. Very nice!

You have my 2 favorite Universal Monsters in that pic, Frankie and Mummy.  :)

Those reissue H3 masks were a huge let down, they were so far from the original it was sad. Nothing will ever be like the originals. Nobody has come close to replicating them to the way they were. I wish everyone could hold a original pumpkin or witch in their hands, they are amazing.

Still building the bar, I incorporated my 400g reef tank into the back bar. It's going to be a long process. When you walk out of the mask room, you'll enter the tiki room. Hoping for progress over the next couple of months

My understanding the Pumpkin was created specifically for Halloween 3, although the Witch was one already in the Don Post catalog.  An extra bonus for lovers of Don Post, is I understand the actual Don Post studios were included in some of the interior scenes for the Silver Shamrock factory.

The Witch was "Hagatha" in 1981 with a olive colored paint scheme. They Repainted her for the film and renamed her "Green Witch". You can see a couple of 81' Hags in my photos. The Hagatha did appear in the film though. She is in the trailer when the spider crawls out of the masks mouth, and in theSilver Shamrock commercial when the kids heads are bobbing back and forth- that's a Hahatha. That sequence was shot early and they used the 81 Witch for it. The factory scenes do show DPS. The 81 Hag is very scarce, I've seen less Hagathas then the really rare H3 Witches. To date we only know of 13 H3 Witches, and 11 Pumpkins. I run a H3 mask archive. Not many people know this, but a fourth mask was supposed to be in the lineup for the movie. I'm trying to find out what it was.

Here are my Hagathas:

I think it could have been a Collegville. There are lots of replicas of that clown mask. I'm a huge Halloween fan, but never went over the top with the masks like so many guys do. One white mask is all I need, I dont get into all of those crazy variations and arguments out there.

This is all very overwhelming! Your collection is beyond what I would call the work of your typical collector. It really is the level of a professional museum. All you're missing are little name plates that give a description of what each mask is. I would love to be able to do something like this but no way do I have the financial resources to even try. Simply amazing. Thanks for sharing, your photos are the closest I'll ever come to viewing masks of this caliber.

The Skull mask is my favorite of the Don Post masks, so I loved seeing the kind of mold from which it was made.  Did they use more than one mold on some of the masks?  Something tells me, rather than using original mold for the H3 tribute masks, they made all new molds.
Title: Re: The Crimson Ghost Mask Room (my collection)

Multiple molds were used since they eventually would wear out. Sometimes they would even use old molds during the mid seventies run of skulls. They had a change in the sculpt in 76' so the skull teeth were changed slightly, but you'll also see 76 dated skulls with older 67 copywriters in the from the old molds. I wrote a very extensive thread on The HMA on the history of the Don Post Skull.

Here is my thread on it:

Haha, thank you! I was buying quite a few Skulls when I was preparing to write my thread in them, aside them from being one of my favorite masks of all time. So many questions have popped up over the years on them I decided to research the heck out of them and try to put it all to bed in one place. I'm still in love with the skulls, there really isn't any other mask like it.

Here is a Karloff I recently painted to resemble a old Frank toy head. I then sent it to Rob Tharp who added the hair.

Super nice! I'm a big Frankie guy so this is right up my alley. You definitely nailed the toy green color. #1 on my "to get" list is a Glenn Strange Frankie which I'm still working on acquiring. Do you have a copy of Justin Mabry's Aurora Frankenstein? I love that mask too.

I have a rare pull of Strange from a 70's DPS mold. I really need to repaint it though, I'm not too happy with whoever did it originally. It's a nice size copy. I'm hoping to paint a strange soon if I can find the right blank, I bought one on eBay but it's lacking details.

Gory, when we were talking about the DPS Mummy reissues, I forgot to mention that I am in the process of buying one of the two original paint masters for the reissue Mummy. The paint master, along with a set of hands produced by Rob Tharp are with Kelly Mann now for a special project I am having him do. I'll post pics when the time comes of the progress. Here is a shot of the mask and hands.

Along with the Mummy paint master, I am also acquire this awesome Wolfman calendar style bust. The bust was put together by Kelly Mann, the head is a master copy Wolfman from the reissue mold and the hands are created by Rob Tharp from the molds.

It does look like a person is wearing the mask and hands at a quick glance! That's funny. On the life size Mummy that Kelly Mann is building me, I almost went with the Calendar pose. I changed it to the classic one arm reaching out look. I'm going to make a dedicated thread for this project later tonight. I'm glad you guys like the pieces, I have a good group of things coming in eventually.

I wonder who ended up with the pumpkin mold, I don't even recall seeing that offered .
Title: Re: The Crimson Ghost Mask Room (my collection)
Post by: Crimson Ghost on July 15, 2015, 10:23:37 AM
The pumpkin mold would have been a plaster mold since the masks were latex, I heard only one exists that is in the hands of someone who worked on the film. The smaller "Smiling Jack" Pumpkin mold was recently found by Don Post Jr. and is in his possession.

My Witch mold is for the vinyl Witch that was released in 83/84, it's the same as the 82 latex Witch (H3)  but they dropped the ears. The metal molds were for vinyl production and used in a roto casting machine. (Not sure if I mentioned that yet)

Two amazing and rare different paint variations on the 70's Hyde B by The Tharps. These are quickly becoming some of my favorite pieces in my collection. Both foamed by Dante of course.
72' catalog look on the left, and the film character on the right.

That's funny. Come to think of it, I don't think I ever welcomed you on board when you first posted. I have to blame it on your incredible collection. I can't click on here without staring at your photos endlessly. Every mask is of legendary status, but one piece really fascinates me. It's the patriarch of the original "Texas Chainsaw" family. I never understood the color choice on the red Mr. Hyde. Is he really really mad? Or maybe you wear him while naked so you look embarrassed?

Thank you! That piece is amazing. It is a 1 of 1.  It was made by an incredible up and coming young artist named Connor Dellis. He was only sixteen years old when he created that thing! It was made to display at Maskfest. Connor makes THE best TCM masks hands down. The kid knocks em out of the park. You can see another one of his creations in my collection, the Pretty Lady Leatherface mask that is near Grandpa.
Actually I'll have to post a shot of the new leatherface mask.

I love the look of 80s Topstone masks. They are just so fun and toylike. And the 80s Shock is wonderful. But as Rudy pointed out, the 80s Shock is not what kids received when they ordered a Shock Monster from Captain Company in the 50s/60s/70s. They would have received an original Keith Ward-sculpted Shock, which did look like the illustration.

Here's a 50s example. Except for the cowboy hat, it looks pretty close to the famous ad illustration.

Much closer to the illustration. I just assumed that the 80's version looked the way it did due to being foam filled until you guys pointed it out. I have both the Don Post and the Trick or Treat Shock Monster. While the TOTS mask goes for a more realistic approach the Don Post mask really looks a lot like the classic illustration and is a great mask that can be had cheap.

Haha, sorry!! I've been so busy with a couple of projects that I've neglected the forum. This is straight from a friend (Evil Wilhelm) who worked on the reissue project at the studio:

"I had my Hyde painted to look like the calendar back in 1987. When we did the re-issues Don said "paint it like Evil's" and that is what they got. At the time, I had the only known copy of the Calendar Hyde. By allowing it to be scanned for the re-issues, it was the first time that a wearable Hyde would have ever been made. Then the cast them in that thick substance which rendered them unwearable and painted them ... red"

Then the cast them in that thick substance which rendered them unwearable and painted them ... red"

I was really hoping that when the big reveal on Red Mr. Hyde happened that I would think "that makes perfect sense, now I see why they chose red". But nope, it's exactly what I thought it was, a poor color choice. That color is appropriate for a devil mask, but not Mr. Hyde. Good ol' re-issue Mr. Hyde can be had for an average of about $50 online these days and I suspect that is part of the reason. I even saw one recently in new condition on eBay with a BIN price of $40. I'd have it re-painted if I ever picked one up. Thanks for the info CG!

Hey guys! I've acquired some great pieces. A rare flesh colored Razooly that was only available in the first year (1981) after that they were painted red. In this group I also got a 1978 Gillis, 1981 Peter, 1985 Hooded Knight and 1986 Clara Voyant. All of these masks are practically brand new and tagged with their factory stuffing. I've never seen vintage masks in this condition, it's incredible like they were made yesterday.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy the photos! my wide angle lens stretches the room out a bit. It's much more fun to walk in their in person. If anyone ever travels to Chicago, I live in NW Indiana about an hour South of the city. You're welcome to come and check it out.

The masks I have been acquiring lately are freaks of nature lol, they are all crazy mint condition specimens. We've never seen pieces like this so new and fresh like they were made yesterday. Here is a 70's Coridian Alien, a 1983 Schizoid, and a rare 1983 Dracula. All Don Post, tagged with factory stuffing even. Just awesome pieces.

I picked up three very rare 70's Don Post masks. A Frankenstein 2001, it is in need of some major restoration help but the paint is beautiful..then a 70's Don Post Demon and a 70's Don Post Erik. They are all heading to California to get worked on by the great Dante Renta. I'll post photos when they return.

Some new scores:

Abbot and Costello meets Frankenstein tribute set. This copy of the Don Post Smooth Frankenstein was molded from a master copy years ago, paint by Rob, Hair by Dante. It has amazing detail. The 1100 Line Don Post Wolfman was painted by Rob and haired by Dante, and the original sculpt 60s DP Newman Dracula was finished by Kelly Mann in the 66' Calendar style. All foamed by Dante.

This is a one of a kind Conol Cochran bust created by Kelly Mann. The head was Daniel Horne's personal latex blank copy. Kelly painted and haired the head and built the bust from scratch.

I had a copy of the white and green 1983 Don Post Medusa. I had Cathy Tharp repaint it to resemble the elusive 82' Gold Medusa that is seen in Halloween III.
The gold copies do not exist today because the original gold paint that was used back then reacted with the latex and melted the masks. The mask is now being foam filled, I'll post pics when it is completed.

I'm kicking around the idea of more custom shoelaces this winter, I'm very tight on room and have moved some masks to another room already. It hasn't forced me to sell any BSS masks just yet, if I do I will surly post them here for sale. I hate letting them go.

Rudy you should consider contacting  some museums that might want to display part of your collection around Halloween time. I know  SFO (the airport) has just finished displaying some of Kirk Hammett's monster movie collection.  Your collection seems to have the breadth and depth that museums appreciate. Think of all the kids that could see this and catch the bug....

I've been acquiring some great vintage Don Post pieces, I'll be shooting updated collection photos next weekend. One of my favorite new pieces is a 1982 Merlin. The blue skinned Wizard was made in very low numbers and was a one year only mask. I scored an amazing tagged specimen. More pics to come, some rare Don Post pieces will be posted.

My new Mummy! The head is one of two rare 1998 paint master prototypes for the Don Post reissue Calandar mask Mummy. The hands were created by Rob Tharp, and the body design and all of the wrappings were created by Kelly Mann. The project was originally going to be based off of the smaller Verne Langdon storefront Mummy. I decided to make him a life size Mummy instead. Kelly did an amazing job, and I couldn't be happier. Kelly did mention that he learned how to make the wrappings directly from Verne Langdon himself. I'll be posting more mask updates soon. There are a lot of new pieces in the collection and Mask Fest is coming up, I'm hoping to pick up some new things there.

You're killin' me Rudy. That is amazing to say the least. So wish I could make it to Mask-Fest. I will be at the "Art of the Halloween Mask" exhibit at Lethal Amounts Art Gallery in Los Angeles on Oct. 15th. Are you going to be there? I know Lee Lambert will be going.

QuoteAn exhibit on the art of Halloween Masks throughout the ages.

Featuring modern day world class artists in the field of mask production and special effects and a collection of vintage halloween masks dating back to the 60s.
