Title: Mexican Horror Films: A History In advertisement
Post by: Memphremagog on June 13, 2015, 12:38:17 PM
There a quite a few Mexican classic horror/sci-fi/fantasy films from the golden era that are worth checking out if you are tired of the regular films from the US, Britain, etc..I first became aware of the films through articles published in Famous Monsters Of Filmland back in the day. Some of the photos from the films that appeared in the article really intrigued me and so over the years I began checking them out. Although there is a subgenre of Mexican films that feature wrestlers versus various monsters and can appear ridiculous, there are also some solid chillers available to see with eerie and sometimes just bizarre characters. One thing is for certain, the films are far from dull.

Without further ado, let's take a look...

DRACULA(1931)

Universal produced a Mexican version of Dracula at the same time that Bela Lugosi's version was being filmed, and although Carlos Villarios is no Lugosi, this version is not only longer, but in many ways more noirish than the English version and well-worth seeing.

THE CAT CREEPS(1930)

Just as the English version of CAT CREEPS(1930) is missing and presumed lost, so is the Mexican version that Universal produced, just as they would with Dracula a year later. Leading lady Lupita Tovar was in both CAT and DRACULA for Mexican audiences.

The Black Pit Of Dr. M (1959) is one of the best. Very atmospheric and macabre, it features a pact between two doctors. The first one to die agrees to try to contact the other to give a glimpse of what lies beyond the grave.
