Title: The Double-Feature: A History In Advertising
Post by: Memphremagog on May 17, 2015, 01:08:34 PM
This thread is to showcase the advertising that went into promoting that lost movie art: the double feature. Ads for double-bills of the classic era(and sometimes triple-bills) will appear here.  :)

First up:

I saw this double bill with a buddy of mine at either the Capitol or the Loews theatre in downtown London a few weeks or months after the two films were released:

My buddy was so overwhelmed with fear that he couldn't watch the Dracula graveyard scene and slumped down below the seat in front of us! Those two movies left a lifelong impression on me, particularly the Dracula one, and I've been a monster and Hammer Horror fan ever since!

Lucky you! I can't even imagine what it would be like to see these two undeniable classics back when they were brand new. I only saw the late sixties/early seventies ones in the theater. Even that was enough to turn me into a Hammer fan for life.

Best of all there was really nothing to prepare us for the experience. We didn't know that we were going to view movies that would soon be regarded as all-time classics. In fact we didn't have a TV yet in our household and the only horror movie I'd seen to that point was The Monolith Monsters at the drive-in which was in B & W.  But these two Hammer features were on an old-fashioned full size movie screen right in front of our very eyes in living colour! Oh no, we'd seen nothing like these movies and we weren't prepared for the experience at all!

I would have loved seeing "Monolith Monsters" in it's original run. The drive-in is a perfect venue for it. I didn't realize there were drive-in theaters in England (you know, due to the weather and all).

While that may be the case, the London of my formative years that I mention on occasion happens to be London, Ontario whose current population is 375,000:

London circa 1960 had seven movie theatres - Capitol, Loews, Odeon, Victoria, Centre, Park and Hyland -  plus three drive-ins - 401, Twilite and Sunset.
