Title: New DC Comics Shows
Post by: geezer butler on October 31, 2014, 11:56:52 AM
Anyone out there watching "Gotham" or "Constantine?" I really like Gotham so far and the Constantine premier looked interesting IMO.

I watch "Gotham". It's not bad. The character origins don't match up with the movie origins. Probably not the comics, either, but I'd have to look those up to be sure.

Yeah Gotham has its own universe going. That fact that it's a prequel, yet set in today's world obviously doesn't match with comic book or cinema histories. I still think it's well done so far.

I like Constantine as a comic book character, so I'm intrigued by the show. I have 2nd episode on the DVR, not sure what the ratings were.

One of these days I'd like to binge watch "Arrow" too. I hear good things about it.

Enjoying Gotham so far.  I checked out the first couple of Arrows on Netflix and thought that it was good as well but haven't had time to watch anymore.   Got Constantine dvr'd but haven't watched any yet.  Also unmentioned in the thread so far, The Flash is a decent show but the premise is pretty much a rip off of Smallville.  In Smallville they used Kryptonite to explain how most of Clark's villians got there poweres, in The Flash it is an experimental power source that explodes giving not only the Flash his powers but others as well.

I really like the way Gotham has been going, even though I had doubts in the beginning.  The Flash has become a must watch, and even Karen has gotten hooked.  Arrow has been doing some name dropping lately with Ted Grant ( golden age hero Wildcat), and Felicity's new boss Ray Palmer (The Atom).  Hope they do Wildcat justice.

I get the feeling that "The Flash" is a stand alone show, but I'd still like to watch Arrow first and see how the crossover happened before starting up with Flash. The interesting thing is: apparently the DC television universe will exist totally separate from the cinema universe (unlike Marvel).

Ok, so I started binge watching "Arrow" season 1 and think it's outstanding. I have 4 episodes left. From what I hear, the show actually gets better in seasons 2 and 3. I look forward to checking out the "Flash" soon.

I'm caught up with "Constantine" too. I like this show and think it has great potential. They have access to DC's other supernatural/horror characters, so we could see Swamp Thing, Spectre (he sort of made an appearance already), Zatanna, Deadman etc. Internet rumors say NBC going to cancel show though. I hope not.

From what I read NBC is still very much interested in keeping Constantine around and are wanting to bring in new writers (for next season) to help the show move forward...then again I had read that a while ago.

I watch both..."Gotham" is interesting, although wish they would actually have the villains instead of the backstory....was never a fan "Constantine" in the comics, but do like the show.

I have been enjoying Gotham , thought it was unique from the begining like the Galactica reboot of a few years ago, I only watched a partial Constantine episode it didn't do much for me , but I plan on giving it a fair chance and will try a couple of episodes

Finally binged watched Flash yesterday, I'm almost caught up just 2 episodes to go.  I really think this show is filling in a void for fans of Smallville; the two shows are incredibly (probably by design) similar.  One of the few differences is that the main character in the Flash actually appears in costume.  One word of warning episode 8 is a crossover with Arrow but I don't think it really leaves you lost or anything like that, it just may help to be slightly familiarized with Arrow.

Speaking of Arrow I still think of Justin Hartley (from Smallville) as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, he was great in the role but Stephen Amell does a commendable job as well from the few shows I've watched.

D.C. is getting ready to amp up their tv presences with several live action shows, let's hope it isn't to much of a good thing!  A few have already gone in production and a couple actually have premiere dates but most are in development;

iZombie-premieres March 17th on the CW; fans of Tru Calling will find this premise slightly familiar

Preacher-premieres late 2015 on AMC

Supergirl-TBA on CBS, the show may possibly exist in the same universe as Arrow/Flash...but then of course that would definitely tie Superman into that universe as well.  If they do crossover it appears it'll be the only other D.C. show to do so.  Melissa Benoist was just recently announced in the title role.

Static Shock-TBA from WB

Titans-TBA on TNT; based on Teen Titans, Dick Grayson has dropped the Robin persona (as well as his former partner Batman) and adopted the moniker Nightwing.  He is the leader of a band of heroes including Cyborg, Starfire, Beast Boy and Raven.

Young Justice-TBA on CW; leads will be Superboy and Miss Martian; described as a "teen drama/romance with a superhero twist"

DMZ-TBA on Syfy

Scalped-TBA on WGN

Lucifer-TBA on Fox, based on a character from The Sandman comics

Global Frequency-TBA on Fox

Krypton-TBA on Syfy

Hopefully the cream will rise to the top of the overload and cool things off a bit.  D.C. is also heavily investing in the movie screen as well.  They're just starting their shared cinematic universe which started with Man of Steel, leading into Batman vs. Superman, leading into Justice League; Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, Shazam, Cyborg and Green Lantern are all currently set to get their own origin/spin offs to tie the D.C. cinematic universe together (starting in 2017-2020).  Expect any of these characters to pop up at anytime during the course of these movies.

Suicide Squad; A "Dirty Dozen" concept using D.C. villains is in development as well and apparently it will be tied to the cinematic universe and lead Ben Affleck's Batman into some continuing adventures.

Will Smith (Deadshot), Jared Leto (Joker), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller); Gary Sinise is in talks to play General Wade Eiling and Joe Manganiello is in talks to play Deathstroke.

Tom Hardy was originally signed on as Rick Flag but conflicting reports say he dropped out due to the role not being big enough or that there is a scheduling conflict with another production.

I think you guys are right that the studios are going to saturate the market. Right now I'll stick w/big 4 (Arrow, Flash, Constantine, and Gotham). I don't even think that actor looks like Supergirl. The Titans show may be interesting though.

Suicide Squad is my favorite contemporary comic book, so I'm pretty psyched. Though I'm pretty disappointed knowing the Fresh Prince is going to play Deadshot. Plus, I already like the SS cast from Arrow. It may be weird watching different actors playing the same characters. I can't think of any precedent for this---I mean you're gonna watch one guy play the Flash on TV, but another dude play him in the movie---at the same time.

I like Gotham and saw a few more eps of Constantine & thought they were good , looking forward to anything Superman related

News on the live action Teen Titans~

"Heading the team, unsurprisingly, will be Dick Grayson. ........Dick will begin the series as Robin following a recent split with Batman, but will eventually grow into the mantle of Nightwing as he did in the comics.

...........Barbara Gordon. In this version, Barbara will be Oracle in everything but the name. According to Nerdist's report on the script, Barbara will be in a wheel-chair and operate as the Titan's information source, but she will not officially go by the Oracle moniker.
This will be Barbara's first time as a member of the Titans in any medium.

Next are Raven and Starfire,............

Finally, Hawk and Dove................"

http://comicbook.com/2015/02/02/titans-tv-series-roster-revealed/ (http://comicbook.com/2015/02/02/titans-tv-series-roster-revealed/)

I suspect that some of this early roster will not make it very long and either be killed off or part ways with the group leaving room for other members to join; I'm guessing this show will probably leave room for a rotating line up of heroes (much like its comic counterpart).

Constantine info~

"Rumors are hot that the series could be headed to Syfy for a second season, although neither Ryan nor showrunner Daniel Cerone seem to have any idea, with Cerone saying that those kinds of decisions, if they're being made, are being made above his pay grade in the NBC Universal office suites."

Here's the rest of the story and short interview with Matt Ryan;

NBC cancelled Constantine, but the character is joining Arrow.

Arrow is great show IMO, so I'm stoked. I really thought Matt Ryan was excellent as Constantine, so I was disappointed when they axed the show. Producers are saying this is a one time crossover, but you know that could be BS. Hopefully he sticks around and maybe CW picks up Constantine as its own show again. So many cool supernatural and horror characters---Dead Man, Swamp Thing, Andrew Bennett Vampire, Frankenstein Monster, Etrigan the Demon, The Spectre,  Zatanna---in DC universe that could be used in show like that.

Anyone watching Gotham or any of the other DC shows this season??

Gotham is pretty good, though I like the first season better so far. Only a few episodes in though.

Arrow introducing a lot more supernatural elements to show, so that's cool. Constantine prob making an appearance soon.

The Flash pretty good so far imo.

I'm gonna dvr Supergirl on Monday. We'll see how it goes.

I don't watch the other TV shows, but I did catch SUPERGIRL on the DVR, and felt like I was in chummed-up waters because the writers have so far to go in establishing her vast life-story.

This 'chumming up the waters' will indeed create an initial frenzy of interest but, after a point, my preferences will click it 'off' and decide that blessed sleep is more productive.  It is nice to see Calista although throwing up irritants-as-characters gets boring for me quickly, too.

On the other hand, I'm not sure how else these writers could proceed with this project.

I know DC is slobbery over getting their hands on the Marvel Cash Cow, but I suspect they're going to face a critical mass at some point and the sheer weight of hourly soap-operas will keep viewership from being maintained.

But what's the alternative?   "Hey - we could do a zombie series!!"   Yes... the wave of creativity proves that water always flows downhill.

I don't think her backstory is going to be a major concern, if that's what you were talking about.  In this show she has done absolutely nothing with her powers up to the point when she saves the plane; she was brought to her adoptive parents by Superman, they had full knowledge of her powers and kept her from really using them.  There is no "Smallville" to be told here.
Title: Re: New DC Comics Shows
Post by: ChristineBCW on October 27, 2015, 07:45:45 PM
I think her backstory still has a ways to go.  I think the opening credits - that voice-over - will keep forever announcing that she came to protect her cousin but he arrived first by many years.

And we know Episode 2 has some evil Auntie.

She apparently has a Fairy Godsister, too, and I didn't notice if Teri Hatcher was her Earth-mom, but I saw Dean Cain was her Earth-dad.  (It's probably just as well she arrived at an older age - there are rumors that Hatcher's are fake anyway.)

I wonder if Episode 3 will have the Evil Stepmother and the 3 Evil Stepsisters?  (That seems awfully familiar... hmmm... something about kryptonite slippers or something...)

Her adoptive mom is played by Helen Slater, 1984's Supergirl.

I finally watched Supergirl pilot. I liked it. I'll stick w/hit for a while if they keep it running.

Constantine making an appearance on Arrow this week. That's really cool IMO. I wish NBC would have given Constantine more time.

King Shark made an appearance on the Flash last week. I'm super stoked about that. KS one of my fav DC monsters.

I thought the DC shows were pretty stellar this Fall. I'm enjoying Supergirl so far. I really liked the Red Tornado and Martian Manhunter appearances. The Flash and Arrow crossovers were pretty epic too. Awesome appearances by Hawkman and Hawkgirl. I thought Gotham started off slow, but I like how the half season finished up. The Constantine and King Shark appearances on Arrow and Flash def my favorite moments though.

I think Supergirl is getting pretty good. I really dig that Martian Manhunter is in there. None of my students seem to be watching it, so I wonder about ratings. These are the same kids that watch Flash, Arrow and all the Marvel tv shows.

Anyone watch "Legends of Tomorrow" yet? I think it's a lot of fun. Captain Cold and Heat Wave steal the show imo. I hear Sgt. Rock, The Sandman and Jonah Hex will appear too. Pretty sweet.

*Spoiler alert: did you see Amanda Waller get whacked on Arrow? You know my conspiracy theory: WB told Arrow and Flash to lay off characters from the DC cinematic universe. So they whacked Deadshot and now Waller. I bet you won't see Captain Boomerang or Katana anymore. And what happened to Deathstroke???

This must be a Earth 2 (alternate universe) thing?!  How is it that no one on Flash has ever mentioned Superman flying around Metropolis before?  I doubt he has ever been brought up on Arrow either and sure he won't be mentioned on Legends of Tomorrow; either make it a shared Universe from the get go or don't try to combine it down the road if it doesn't make sense.

I'm all for this if they can pull it off. But as you point out, finessing the story line is going to be challenging. When you look at the "Arrowverse," they've acknowledged meta-humans, the supernatural, time travel and the multiverse. So it seems inconceivable they would not have mentioned the existence of extra terrestrials like Superman and Supergirl.  Flash  is traveling to Earth 2 next week, so maybe that's the setup. Note that on last week's Legends of Tomorrow, Rip Hunter mentioned "men of steel" and "dark knights."

Btw: there was a wrinkle in my conspiracy theory last week on Arrow. Katana made a brief appearance. So she's not dead at least, but we'll see how often they show her.

It would have to be another alternate Earth as Earth 2 's fashion is 1940's style and Supergirl is set in our universe or at least one that mirrors it.

Did you watch Flash this week? Very cool Supergirl cameo. Overall the Earth 2 episode was a lot of fun. I see what you mean though, there's no way Supergirl and National City are on Earth 2. It has to be another Earth.

By the way, here's my prediction regarding the cemetery scene with Arrow and Flash: I think Oliver's baby mama is gonna get whacked. I can't imagine they would kill his little boy, so prob gonna be the mom. Then Oliver and Felicity will raise the child in upcoming seasons. Could be wrong of course.

The Flash was great last week. King Shark is so gnarly, I'd like to see more of him, both on page and on screen. After Swamp Thing, King Shark def my favorite monster in DC universe.

So Zoom finally revealed himself. I'm guessing he's actually from Earth One. Any thoughts?

Anyone watching CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths? It's pretty rad. It's the annual CW cross-over episodes, so you have all the Arrowverse characters: Green Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Superman, Batwoman, and the Legends of Tomorrow.

But what's really cool is they mixed some old school DC shows. Tom Welling makes an appearance as Clark Kent from Smallville. Burt Ward has cameo as Robin. Brandon Routh revisits his Superman character from Superman Returns. John Wesley Shipp plays the 1990s version of the Flash again. Tom Ellis as Lucifer from Netlifx made a cameo (that was my favorite one). Robin from DC's streaming show "Titans" was in a scene.

Pretty ambitious and cool.

Arrowvese getting into more and more horror stuff. Not only did  Lucifer and John Constantine share a scene, Jim Corrigan as the Spectre made an appearance. Looks like Oliver Queen may become the new Spectre.

The current crossover got me interested in re-reading the original comics. I still marvel at George Perez's ability to draw a multitude of panels and characters in the limited space of a comics page. As for the show, I'm traveling in the month of January, so I'll miss the last two episodes , but I enjoyed the work and the care put into the parts aired so far. I wasn't as fond of the two after show segments. Kevin Smith is entertaining, but I thought he was  a little too over the top as the show's host. The short actor segments were interesting, however it would have been more appealing to me to see Marv Wolfman and George P. Talking about the series.

I've followed all the CW's DC shows on and off for the last couple of years and am binge watching Doom Patrol this week. I'm hoping for a Swamp Thing  dvd soon as I'd like to see what they did with the character in the latest live incarnation.

I watched the first season and found it entertaining. It's a far cry from the original Creature Commandos from Weird War Tales. Of all the shows DC could have led with for their new era, I thought the cartoon was a weird way to begin. I'm looking forward to Krypto and Lobo more than most of the rest of what's coming.
