These seem to be behind the scenes photos for what looks like The Addams Family casting try outs . I know John Astin was attached to it from the beginning but look at the various actors playing Grandmama, Lurch and Fester. I picked out Sgt. Bilko's Maurice (Doberman) Gosfield and character actor Percy Helton as Fester's. Over at CHFB's thread they picked out John Dierkes, Stanley Adams, Paul Wexler as well.
Those are great! Thank god they got it right!
These are all really GREAT posts! I especially loved the "Dorian Gray" artists - I had always wondered who actually did that painting series -- amazing they were twins (double the talent) very cool to see the life size model they used as well! And what a shocker it was when they threw in that color shot of the portrait in the movie - makes the whole movie!! Would love to have a copy of that LIFE issue if ever possible -- I love the behind the scenes stories.

Those James Cagney Man of a Thousand Faces photos are a real treasure. I have never seen most of those. I especially like the first one where they are stretching the latex appliance over his head. Really cool.
I can't be sure, but that looks like Bud Westmore in the 4th photo applying some makeup-- holding the paintbrush in what I like to call the "Westmore style" ('Hey Bud, LIFE Magazine is coming' 'What? LIFE? are you kidding?! Alright, outta the way Keevan, and gimme that brush! Now stand over there looking amazed and dumbfounded in this photo!')
Matt
Matt,
Isn't that the truth in regards to Bud...LOL
Thanks for posting the pics Clay. After looking at the photos I was reminded that somewhere in the massive arrangement of boxes I currently call "my collection" is the set of eight lobby cards from the Cagney "Man of 1000 Faces". Now, which box is it........David
You are certainly right about Westmore, but in this case he did apply the make up on Cagney. He was a Movie star and this was the actual filming day, it appears, as opposed to the test make up.
LOVE these photos!!
BTW, AZGILLMAN gave me a lovely birthday gift of one of these Creature framed pics. It' AMAZING!

I have never seen these Addams Family casting days photos and I'm really fascinated. I was wondering if anyone can help identify some of the other tryouts for the Addams roles. On the Lurch side, one is almost certainly John Dierkes (from "The Haunted Palace" and the 1951 "The Thing"). For the Festers, one looks a bit like Joe Besser, and another looks like Barney Martin. A few pages in one Fester is almost certainly Percy Helton ("Cratchit" on The Beverly Hillbillies, many more.) Any identifications, guesses or other ideas on some of the rest. It's also however easy to identify Lisa Loring, Ken Weatherwax and Ted Cassidy. Ken looks to be the best choice, for example as he has a bit more outre look, the other Pugsleys look a bit too middle American.
Thanks for any other help!
Michael

Boy, that sure looked like James Cromwell... they could've played brothers, if not twins, when Cromwell was younger.
Ironic that the moles/warts were on the cheek of the actor who was not a Cromwell! ;)
Thanks for the info Bob.
Kool Stuff. Any ideas on the other Morticia actress?
Yeah, I concur. Not Cromwell.
Good eye.
Only in L.A.:
A few years ago I accidentally stepped on Mr Wexler's grave while searching for my dad's whereabouts at Mt Sinai cemetary in Glendale. (EZ to do dumb things like this -- get lost & step on people's graves -- as all the graves are at ground level & the name plaques are flat.) After checking to make sure my head was still attached, I beat a dignified but hasty retreat!
I think the Fester with the bad bald-cap is Maurice Gosfield - Pvt Doberman from 'BILKO'.

And here he is as the First Witch (center) in the 1949 BBC TV production of "The Tragedy of Macbeth" (witches are borderline "monsters" for me - generally not actually monsters, but spooky)

Thesiger in a see-thru outfit?!! I had no idea we'd see plastoidal costuming like that in 1932.
And the "witches/monster" controversy arrives. I don't generally think of them as monsters, but since they conjure up monsters (or, sometimes, by strapping carrots onto the noses of people), witches IN monster movies - or monsters in Witch movies - seems common enough.

Yes, it looks so "modern." Ernest only wanted to play that character so he could wear the outfit. He loved dressing up, and was quite the party animal well into his maturity - something which surprised me greatly when I found it out, since he is described so often as "prissy." And his own clothing was quite eclectic - he was wearing clothes in the 1930s which look like they might have been from the 1970s, and he liked to wear bright colors.
Here he is in 1934 wearing one of his modern outfits, with normal guy in the background:

Where's the Elvis cape?!!
Can you study a large pix of this neckline's closure-device? That's not a zipper, it is?
I am thinking of the emergence of "zoot suits" which are largely an urban late'40s into early '50s emergence, then growing popularity into the later '50s. But the styling on this shirt might have been a precursor to sharper and larger collars, pinched waistlines. The "riding style" trousers were nothing new - the only thing missing are epulets on the shoulders!
It is, indeed, a zipper.
You asked for a cape:

Again, not a LIFE photo, but one I'd like to share. Here's a closeup of a photo from Theatre World January 1948 of a production of Shaw's "You Never Can Tell" starring Ernest Thesiger and James Donald. Donald of course beloved to many of us as Dr Roney from QUATARMASS AND THE PIT. (sorry about sad pic quality, but those postwar magazines are not great and it's a teeny tiny photo)
