Title: Rob Zombie and the Universal Monsters
Post by: Universal_Adam on July 22, 2014, 08:44:25 PM
I recently got free tickets to a 4 day music festival, and Rob Zombie was headlining on the last day. Now..I'm not a huge fan of most of the music that day, and I'm not particularly a fan of Rob Zombie, but There I was..Sitting in the crowd while his people were setting up for his performance, and imagine my absolute giddiness when I saw a huge photo of Chaney's Wolf Man on the stage..followed by Karloff's Frankenstein Monster, then Chaney Sr. Phantom, and Frederic March's Mr. Hyde.  Instantly I grabbed my camera and darted to the stage for a closer look and photos.  I notice the box that the drummer was on had a photo of Conrad Veidt from "Man who Laughs" and as I'm getting closer, I see at the back of the stage..a GIGANTIC King Kong going up.  It was incredible.
I grabbed some pictures.  With the crazy lighting it may be hard to see, but I thought I would share.

Unfortunately Mr. Zombie blew his voice out and stopped after 2 songs, but I got pictures first!

Zombie's been gloriflying the Universal Monsters ( and other various classic monsters, b-movie monsters, z grade schlock films, etc.) for most of his career.  There is always something for us classic horror fans to see during his stage shows and most of his music videos draw inspiration from classic horror cinema.

Like Kirk Hammett, Glenn Danzig, Alice Cooper etc., Rob Zombie is a friend to all things monster.

Very cool images. I wonder if he had to get permission from Universal. But yeah Zombie greatly influenced by classic monsters and bands like Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Kiss, and Misfits. Smart guy IMO!

I hope his younger fans unfamiliar with classic horror will be inspired and take old school films seriously.

In Rob Zombie's Halloween II, there is a scene where a little kid looks up at Michael Myers and asks, "Are you a giant?" This was an obvious homage to the scene in The Ghost of Frankenstein. Although I did not like Rob Zombie's Halloween II at all, I did appreciate that particular scene.

You also had to love the scene where Weird Al, wants to know if Michael Myers was the same guy in the Austin Powers films.

Rob Zombie has worked with Universal on various monster-related projects. He has designed a few of the "Halloween Nights" events at Universal Studios (here in Ca.) and has compiled a CD called "The Words & Music of Frankenstein" (from the soundtracks of the first three 30's films) among other projects. I'm sure he is fully authorized to use all the images in his shows (unless they're public domain). I'm glad you mentioned Sabbath. That's another great horror-influenced band.

I have seen White/Rib Zombie many times. In 2002, Rob Zombie displayed those very same tapestries for his show.
Always a treat.

Sabbath my favorite band (you guys probably already figured that out!). We already mentioned Kiss and Alice, but Blue Oyster Cult another cool 70s band that incorporated sci-fi and occult themed lyrics. In terms of music, I'm more of an old school guy, but it's cool to see artists like Zombie carry on a great tradition of blending horror and heavy rock.
