Title: Classic double-features
Post by: Memphremagog on May 16, 2014, 12:05:39 PM
I have a large enough collection that from time to time, I like to try and experience the viewing pleasures of cinema gone by. As a result, I usually take two films that were originally paired together upon their initial release and view them as a double feature. I wonder if anyone else indulges in this habit?  If so, here is a list of double-features that are available either on DVD, Blu-ray, VHS or the internet in some form to make viewing possible.

Now that I have a list (and what a list!), I think I'll give it a try!  :)

Seems like they got their "A' and "B" movies mixed up with Black Friday/House Of Seven Gables.

There is actually an existing trailer for the Hyde/Fu Manchu/Vampire triple bill courtesty of MGM. They owned the Paramount version of Hyde when they did their own version in 1941 so this would've been official.

There's a restored theater in the Detroit area that views classic horror film double-features around Halloween. But I wish I were at one of these original double-features.

LS was the official 2nd feature to MM. The original Showman's Manual had a page of ad mats (or how to make yer own, or whatever) for the dbl feature. They were tipped in as a separate page and are usually missing from surviving copies.

I think distributors may have taken over by 1960 as the main culprit/force behind double-bills.  I think the studios gave all of that away as part of their collapse (of the 'studio system' which started heavily after WWII and by the 1950s, was well on its way to the end).

Some of these combos are soooo weird.  I can just see some distributor-clerk playing 52-card-pickup with the inventory rolodex, and deciding to follow the Corman School Of Marketing - "Anything with a good poster will sell - trust me."

Some of these films - they really should have handed out the poster WITH the tickets, though.  "What are we watching?"  I dunno.  "Who's in it?"  Don't know...not sure if they want us to remember their name, either.

Not that I have come across as yet..the STRANGE DOOR/SON OF DR.JEKYLL billing is discussed in the new UNIVERSAL TERRORS book by Tom Weaver..it's basically said that the reason that they had this pairing theatrically, was because there were really no new horror themed releases for that year except for these two and Bride Of the Gorilla(which was also paired with either of these films depending on the areas.)

Plenty of sci-fi movies in 1951, but not from Universal or Columbia.

To the ATTACK OF CRAB / NOT OF THIS EARTH poster... I love those blurbs.  "...trapped by giant mollusks!"   "Mammoth decapods-!"  I love those.  I can just imagine kids asking parents for the dictionary on that top shelf.  "Hurry!  I hafta find out!"
