Hey everybody,
We're new here at the Universal Monster Army, but we thought we'd share some of the great vintage monster collectibles that are being offered in our current auction (which is online now and open for bidding). We at Hake's have always had a special place in our hearts for monsters and horror and we love offering great pieces to our collector friends. If you're unfamiliar with us, we've been in business since 1967 and have three auctions annually, each with over 200 categories of collectibles, most auctions having 2,500 to 3,000 lots. Each auction has a selection of monster memorabilia, so there's bound to be something to strike your fancy.
Here's a direct link to the Monsters/Horror section of our auction if you're curious - http://www.hakes.com/search.asp?depth=100&CategoryCode=204_0&Criteria=&SearchFor=Auctions (http://www.hakes.com/search.asp?depth=100&CategoryCode=204_0&Criteria=&SearchFor=Auctions)
Here's a recent flyer promoting previous Monster collectibles we've sold as well as some of the new offerings in our current auction. Give it a look and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. Do you except drool as currency?!? Zombie Roll Eyes
Trust us, if we did, we have to purchase some sump pumps for the office!
Welcome to the UMA, Hakes!
I've been familiar with Hakes for several years (as I'm sure many here are), but mostly seem to come across the auctions after they've closed. Thanks for the link! Maybe I'll take home something from this one! :)
Thanks for the welcome Mike! Glad to be here and hope to share some interesting tidbits with the Army!
I have been a patron of the original Hake's since the 1980s. I can vouch. I remember when my AVERAGE win on a Monster item at Hake's was $35-$50~! Those days are over, unfortunately.
LOVE THE HAKES!!
Thought we'd spotlight one of the great Monster items in the current auction - this 1951 Realart re-release lobby card for The Mummy, starring Boris Karloff. You don't get a better image than that! We always felt bad for poor Bramwell Fletcher and his epic meltdown after seeing Imhotep up and about. Great scene!

That is one beautiful lobby card!
Welcome! I've actually purchased from Hake's in the past, and can vouch for them.
Great company!
Thanks for all the kind words folks! Always glad to hear from our customers and fans!
Here's another great item that is in our current auction - a Creature from the Black Lagoon poster print that has been signed by Julie Adams as well as both actors (Ben Chapman and Ricou Browning) who portrayed the Creature on the screen! If you're a fan of the classic 1954 Universal-International film, you need to check this out!

Is that an actual military one sheet? You say "print", so I guess not.
Unfortunately it is indeed a print, not the genuine article. But the signatures are legit.
And since I forgot to include the link, here ya go!

Your Aurora Master Monster Contest kit in the latest sale is very nice, but missing key items: most of the entry blanks and parchment awards (this is obviously a well-used kit), a couple of magazines, one other poster, and most importantly the cover letter from Aurora and the sheet of actually how to run the contest. With the bid that it is going for already, this should be noted to interested collectors.
Hey Monster Bob,
Thanks for the heads-up. As we were putting the current auction together we discussed amongst ourselves as how to word the description for this kit. While the kit is incomplete, nowhere in the description do we claim it's complete. Tracking down what the complete kit included (in terms of specific amounts) was difficult and a point of contention, so we decided to state exactly what was being offered in this particular lot so as not to further confuse bidders.
A nice selection, per usual!
Here's another great Creature From The Black Lagoon item, as yesterday was the 60th Anniversary of the film's debut. This Aurora store display model is currently available for bidding. Check it out!

I wonder how many of those still exist? (Same for any Aurora monster kit.) I see one for sale, every once in a while, but never know whether it's the same one as last time.
I believe this is the second Creature store display model we've offered, as the previous example had some condition issues that differ from this example. There can't be too many left, but we do have Dracula and Land of the Giants store displays this auction as well.

Man, I would like to buy ALL of the monster related items I see here.
Here's another great horror item being offered in the current Hake's Americana & Collectibles auction - an original lobby card for Ed Wood's infamous 1959 film Plan 9 From Outer Space! The lobby card is being offered along with some other Ed Wood film stills (from the original 1955 release of Wood's Bride Of The Monster).

Nice complete set! I didn't realize those cards were that small? Just used to seeing large images on my PC, I guess.
Yeah, they're a little small, but the graphics and color more than make up for that. It would definitely catch our eye while walking by a row of gumball machines!

Thanks for the info on the artist Mike! I've added that to our description!
I was looking through some of the auctions that have closed, what happens to items with no bids?
Can you buy them direct?
Good question. I was wondering that myself.
Some items will be made available for direct purchase (at opening bid plus 15% Buyer's Premium) while some consignors ask for their items back if they do not sell. It's a case-by-case basis, but we should have that information available after the auction closes tomorrow. We'll have that information posted on our site sometime late Thursday afternoon of Friday morning. We'll be sure to let you guys and ghouls know when it's up.

The snake was almost $1200!
Well the latest Hake's Americana & Collectibles auction has come to a close. We would like to thank our bidders, consignors and anyone who took a moment to look through the auction. It's this interest that helped spur the auction to a grand total of $1,126,203! We had several items take off with bidders and some of those included monster and/or horror-related collectibles.

Or how about this complete display of Universal Monsters pencil sharpeners from 1964? The complete set was to include Frankenstein (who is depicted on display header), Mummy, Wolfman and "Etta The Ghoul," a female skeleton, though this display has six Wolfman sharpeners, three Mummy sharpeners and three Etta sharpeners with no Frankenstein sharpeners present. Despite this, the display is full/complete and would make for a frightful addition to any monster fan's collection!

I saw the sharpeners on your site, the other day. Really nice looking! A set of Franks would have made it perfect! :)
Just one Frankenstein (any color) and I would have bid high. Still, a beautiful & worthy addition to any monsterkid's collection.
Indeed. The display could be easily improved (not that it needs it) by purchasing a Frank sharpener separately. They can be had for around $20 or so. The display box is the true rarity here, especially in the nice condition it's in.

Not true. The Frankenstein sharpener is the real rarity. There was a warehouse find of the displays a few years ago, they are not especially rare. If you can find Frankenstein sharpeners for $20, buy as many as you can get your hands on.
That display is from warehouse find...too minty (and note unpunched j-peg hole) to be otherwise. It also explains the lack of Frankensteins.

Ok, Bob, please educate me on this. Why would a warehouse find explain the lack of Frankensteins?
ABG Frankenstein sharpeners for around 20 bucks?! Au Contrare, Monsewer :D. I've been trying to get one for awhile and they seem to hover around the $400 mark. :o

Ok, Bob, please educate me on this. Why would a warehouse find explain the lack of Frankensteins?
Because without the warehouse find (of which there were no Frankensteins, that I recall), ALL the sharpeners would be rare. Before the find, I would maybe come across 1-3 sharpeners of any character per year in the field. Back in the 80s, I had a ghoul and Mummy since I was a kid, and eventually came across a Wolfman and THREE Frankensteins, one on the card, mostly found at toy shows. By that logic, Frankensteins are more common? A friend in Chicago knew the guy that made the find, and he literally had a large bag of each character, less Frankenstein. He was selling them originally for around a buck a piece!
Thanks, Bob, I had no idea.
To clarify, my friend was the one had the bags of them to resell, getting them from the original "finder".
At some point, I talked to somebody that saw the original find (seems to me it was in NY?) and he said he saw huge boxes of sharpener heads. Seeing as they are still around in quantity (at a much jacked up price) I take that to be true.
It all makes sense, now. Thanks.
I remember at a Monster Bash a few years ago, someone was handing out monster sharpeners for free. Just a "party favor" for attending the show. That is how I got my only sharpener, a Wolf Man. This was probably 2006 or 2007.
Why haven't you ever put a set together Raymond? Figured you would like the sharpeners.
I like them, but they've never been at the forefront of my mind. I don't search ebay for them. I would be more interested in a full counter display than in collecting them individually. I don't know if this Hake's display is the right one for me, but I could see buying one eventually.
That is pretty much how I felt about them actually. I ended up buying my display from Andy with some sharpeners, added a few ettas through ebay. Then this last month I finally gave in and bought a grey and a purple frankenstein to add to my display. It was a little more than i planned on spending but I feel pretty good about it , and am happy I got them. With the frankies it now holds a prime spot in my main display case.
I bought my original purple Mummy for a quarter on vacation in Florida at a tourist trap called the Citrus Tower in the late 1960s.
They had the store display, but I am guessing they were sold out of 'steins, as I usually bought Frankenstein or Dracula of anything as a kid when given the choice- because those were the characters I identified with, thanks to the LP FAMOUS MONSTERS SPEAK!(which I adored and had memorized!)

That's not the only Mummy item in the current Hake's Americana & Collectibles auction. We've obtained an Aurora Mummy store display model that was assembled by Aurora and sent to stores for display purposes. Check it out!

The factory built displays are cool just for what they are, even though any good modeler can do a better paint job.
And The Mummy was never the best piece to really dress up. There's only so much one can do with bandages.

Somewhat...though no monsterkid ever had these back then. I never even saw these until the late eighties (I bought a Dracula from a kit dealer). I bought all my kits from the local Thrifty's Drug Store. I guess these were only at hobby/model shops.

Store displays were a big deal at hobby shops/toy stores. I remember seeing a store display for a Marx #3394 Prehistoric Times Playset (square box set) around 1963 in a strip mall hobby shop/toy store in Athens, Ga. I bugged my Mom until she bought me one of the sets because of that store display/diorama. That's what got me hooked on Marx dinosaurs and toy dinosaurs in general. Store displays weren't available to the general public but they sure fired up some Monsterkid excitement in those hobby shops/toy stores (which mostly were Mom & Pop stores in those days...pre corporate invasion and occupation).
Speaking of Aurora Monster models, we just thought we'd throw this out there and see what you guys an ghouls thought.

It's actually a Master Pattern Prototype Model. It's a hand-carved solid assembled acetate plastic master pattern for Aurora's King Kong model kit. HMS Associates (a product development company) of Willow Grove, PA, was hired by Aurora to create master patterns for two new kits - Kong and Phantom.

You seem to have found a bunch of so called "store displays" and this "prototype" a word I never heard used before. So tell me, if you have a Certificate of Authenticity to back up these claims? I already know the answer!
ps: You do enjoy bumping your post everyday as well.

Let's not get all accusatory when you don't know what you're talking about.
Hake's is a reputable auction house and will gladly listen to any "evidence" you have that something they're selling isn't what they say it is.
These Aurora store displays are well known and any modeler or toy collector can tell you what a prototype is. It's the original sculpture that the molds are made from for the production run.
Also, the
classifieds is not a place to dispute a sellers claims. You need to PM a moderator your suspicions and they will deal with is in a matter they see fit.
After researching online, this does appear to be what Hake's is claiming it to be, Master Pattern Prototype Model. If you look at the 1965 King Kong, which this is a Master Pattern for, the bottom of the consumer product has a detailed under base that forms to the outside base. Although Hake's is very reputable, I'd still like to know where this item came from and if their is any authenticity that can be provided.

Somebody here showed us a very unusual "Forgotten Prisoner" he had acquired. Instead of plastic, it was metal. Unusual ad rare items are out there. The main thing is, if you don't want the item, don't bid on it.

Tdude, are we misunderstanding you, or are you saying you have never heard the word "prototype" before? Or you've never heard it used in the context of model kits?
I think it is legitimate to scrutinize the provenance of items like these. But to do it with a swaggering, "gotcha" tone reflects most poorly on the one making the accusation.
As for whether it is appropriate to challenge the seller in this thread, I think the seller has opened the door to public discussion. Our own moderators have already publicly corrected him on the value/scarcity of the Frankenstein sharpener. But I hope we did it respectfully and politely.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Mike Scott. That means a lot to us. In regards to questions about the authenticity of the King Kong Master Pattern Prototype Model, it has been in our possession for some time now, as we only recently learned what it truly was. The item was obtained directly from the archives of HMS Associates, the company that was hired by Aurora to create these master patterns for both their King Kong and Phantom model kits.
We are offering this item with a Hake's Certificate of Authenticity as Hake's stands 100% behind each and every item we have offered in our 47 years in business.
In addition, here's a link to a site with further provenance/history on this piece, as well as others obtained at the same time.

"Everyone wants their items to be seen, and bumping threads constantly may cause them to be locked".
******tdude, Hakes is posting correctly for their unique situation. Please do not post in this thread again.******
Hakes Americana is one of the top auction houses featuring classic monster toys in the world, and have a great reputation in the hobby. I have personally purchased a number of items from Hakes and have always been very happy with their service and descriptions. As they offer a large number of high end items in 3 auctions per year, we allow them a little extra latitude and they have been using this one thread to tell us about their auctions and the great things they have for sale. We welcome Hakes to continue posting at the UMA in exactly the manner they have been using.

My thoughts exactly. It isn't "bumping" if new items are added with each new post.
Hmmm...I should cast doubt on the items I want to bid on.
Whoops, I just bumped up the post! >:D
Since this thread is about Hakes, it seems silly to complain about them letting us know when they have a new listing. Last I checked, if you had no interest in a thread, there was noting stopping you from ignoring it.
We just wanted to thank everyone for their support. It means a lot to us.
And as a reminder, items in the current Hake's Americana & Collectibles auction will begin closing within the hour, starting at 12 Noon (Eastern Time). We'll try to post some monster-related results tomorrow or in the coming days. Stay tuned, things are getting exciting!
Don't think I'd buy from these guys *peruses catalog for third time* :)
Hey everyone. The latest Hake's Americana & Collectibles auction has come and gone. Things have settled down here at Hake's HQ, so we thought we'd take a minute or two to post some results on the monster collectibles we offered this auction. Here's some of those results now (all prices include buyer's premium) -
The Aurora King Kong Master Pattern Prototype Model sold for $3,234.
A factory-sealed Kenner Alien figure sold for $1,242.
While it's a little modern by our tastes, one can't deny the popularity of The Walking Dead. This CGC-graded first issue sold for $1,224.
The original Lindberg Lindy Loonys model kit lid art did well again, with the art for the Big Wheeler kit selling for $1,150.
While the art for the Road Hog kit sold for $1,012.
A loose example of the classic Marx remote-controlled Frankenstein (black shoe variety) sold for $834.

We're getting auction orders together, packing a shipping as well as starting work on our next auction. Hopefully we'll have some Monster-ific news for you soon!
Congratulations, it looks like you guys did pretty well.
I guess I'm not really surprised by those prices. Wouldn't want to have to pay them, either! ;D

Same here. The vintage stuff I understand but I never did get the whole CGC ridiculous prices on newer comics, even something extremely popular and cool like The Walking Dead. To me a VF-NM (9.0) is practically the same as a NM+ (9.6), they both look nearly flawless and it would be hard to tell them apart at a glance in the new comic section of your comic store. And yet the CGC 9.6 would be valued by some at several multiples of the 9.0. Give me nice VF copies of Silver Age/Bronze Age books and forget the slab. I want to peruse them, read the stories, letters, and ads, and smell 'em. Slab cards but not comics/monster mags.
In my post above I was just expressing an opinion concerning slabbed comics and the prices some of them bring. It isn't meant to reflect adversely on Hake's at all. My dealings with Hake's have been pleasant and satisfactory. I was just exercising my UMA right to drone on and get off topic. :)

I totally agree. If I can't read it, I don't need it. Johnnie Cochran would be proud. lol

No worries horrorhunter. We find it very interesting to see some of the prices that these books realize. Slabbed or unslabbed, it's ultimately up to each collector to decide. We know just as many CGC fans as we do proponents of unslabbed books. It is interesting to see the prices some of these books go for though.
Oh, and we'd be remiss if we didn't share some developing news for some Monster collectibles that are currently being secured for our next auction. We can't say just yet, but here's a little tease...

As well as a number of other Aurora monster models, which we'll feature in our next post!
As promised yesterday, here's a feature on some of the many Aurora monster models available for bidding in the current Hake's Americana & Collectibles auction!
In 1969 Aurora introduced the "Frightening Lightning" series of model kits. This was quickly revamped/repackaged later that same year as "Glow In The Dark" kits in totally different boxes. These "first issue" versions look the same as the later 1972 issues, but have distinct differences. First, the boxes have a 1969 copyright as opposed to 1972. They are also on thicker cardboard, more like the 1960s Aurora boxes than what followed in the 1970s. To this point, the factory seal is also cellophane as with the 1960s kits, not the standard shrink-wrap used in the 1970s and beyond. These 1969 versions are much rarer than the 1972 kits. This and the following 11 items comprise a complete set of the 1969 version kits.

Heck of a collection! I didn't know they did the square boxes in '69. Ya larn somethin' new every day!
Neither did we until this collection came into our hands! We have never offered these versions before, and certainly not in this sealed/unused condition.
Well, it's an Aurora collectors dream! :) Be interesting to see how it goes.
Hakes is really bringing out the A-list stuff here. Great pieces, one & all!
Oh, and we've also got a complete boxed Aurora Gigantic Frankenstein, aka "Big Frankie" model kit in the current auction!

This is some of the most "UMA-friendly" stuff Hake's has ever had. Really lovin' it all.
We're very excited to be offering it Mord. It's not very often we come across stuff from that time period that we haven't at least heard about. Just goes to show there's all kinds of hidden horrors out there!
Keep it coming, you guys are great. Luckily it comes at a time when we've all recovered from Christmas spending.

One of the best images of Glenn Strange as The Monster ever to grace vintage monster items!
Another great item being offered in the current Hake's auction is a 1947 Screen Stars Stamp Album that featured everyone and anyone who was involved in the movies or Hollywood at that time. While this includes a myriad of actors and actresses, one particular page caught our attention.
Can you guess why?

Now that you've seen what an Aurora model of The Fly could've looked like, imagine if Aurora had produced a kit for Dracula's Daughter? Check out this fantasy box for what could have been, now available for bidding in the current Hake's Americana & Collectibles auction. Check it out!

Wow !
I love Gary Makaturas' work...
I was fortunate enough to acquire a couple of his promo boxes from Monarch Models a few years ago.
Not sure if Monarch will ever release these kits, I still have faith that perhaps someday they will.
Gary sustained an injury to his hand and hasn't been painting much lately, making these all the rarer.

A lot of nice stuff there! I would love to be able to bid on the Creature Penn Plax and Mystery Game!!
Creech game!!
Whenever that Creature game shows up here (which has only happened twice in the past 10 years) at Hake's we always geek out. It's such a cool piece.

I wish. This one has already just about topped that, may have with the premium, and I've got a feeling it's not half done (I'm NOT in the bidding, just to clarify). This example is probably the third best lid I've ever seen on one. Even though the punch out card the pawn came out of isn't there, it's a non-essential and non-play element, this is likely to set a new record price for Creature games, much to my didn't-buy-it-back-when-for-$400 chagrin. Nothing ever (yet at least) came from that fellow who licensed a re-release of it, right?
What makes me giggle like a silly girlie is, back in the day, I remember Ted Hake himself discouraging me from raising bids any higher on certain Monster items in in his auction, that I did end up getting (this was 20 years ago), when the price of said item reached the upper hundreds.

Why would somebody auction something and then discourage people from bidding on it (or bidding higher)?
Apparently, back in the day, silly high bids [on stuff that was not proven in the market to take that kind of bid] made it look like there may be skullduggery afoot, and discouraged bidding and participation from new blood collectors. That was my understanding, anyway, from more than one auctioneer.

I suppose, if the seller didn't think the bidder would honor his bid.
Owners of items up for auction have been known to have a partner buy something at a ridiculously high bid, eat the auction premium, then use the auction record to establish value and re-sell the item to someone who thought that it was really a great investment.
Maybe the auctioneer thought that was what was happening and wanted to warn a friend/repeat customer.

I can't remember, back then were Hake's auctions set with secret incremental bids (where the house will only increase your bid against another placed bid, like the eHay style), or were they the traditional price-named-is-current-going-price, like paddle and mail-bid style? The eHay style has become so prevalent that a lot of people have no idea what I'm talking about when I tell them how live and silent auctions run (and why waiting to bid on a fixed time auction is financially more advisable).

In the early days, the bid started wherever, and incrementally climbed by percentage.
If you were a tried and true phone bidder, which I always was, you were in contact with Ted Hake or his wife (usually his wife, I think) to the end. Usually 3-5AM in the morning!

Yeah, that's how I remember 'em, from Toy Shop etc. Recently an acquaintance bid at a live plus auction (via the internet, watching on video) and didn't understand that submitting their $550 bid meant the item then stood at $550. No great harm, as they were willing to pay it, but they jumped it up by $200 right there, to their surprise.

Maybe it's the photos, but I'm not seeing a difference in the 2 Morticia puppets.
Thanks, we took in a collection from a guy in Chicago that focused his collecting on rarity and top condition, resulting in some great pieces.
As for the Morticia Addams puppets, the color variety is in the color of fabric used for the body. The first has a light blue body while the second has a pink body. Other than that, the rest (including packaging) is identical.

No worries. Sometime variations can be very subtle. You should see differences in concert poster printings. Some can vary by 1/16 of an inch. Or less.

Maybe he's using ImageShack for some of his pics. None of my older pics show on UMA thanks to ImageShack hosting problems. Good thing I switched to Photobucket fairly early on.
I suspect he's just linking to the Hakes' site and Hakes takes down pictures a few weeks after the auction ends. The point I'm not so subtly making is that if he's going to advertise his auctions here he should show enough consideration to our board's membership to post images that stay up for good. He should at least try not to leave the impression that he cares only for this board as a potential end market.

Sorry guys, our website is currently being overhauled, which is why some of the picture links aren't working. Hopefully we'll have the pictures back up soon as we get the new website back in business! Have you ever run across Topstone catalogs?
We always try to represent each category every auction, sometimes the items are there, sometimes they're not. This auction has some killer pieces and we hope the next one will as well.
To the best of my knowledge, we have never offered any Topstone catalogs. Though that doesn't necessarily mean we aren't open to the prospect! :)

Who cares about the bottom? Just patch it up and nobody will ever see it! Nice looking lid!
It is a great lid. You can almost hear that kid laughing maniacally.
I believe that was Mort Kunstler who did the box art. Classic!
I think you're right! The man certainly had a way with a brush and paint.

Speaking or artists, did you see this original publicity art by Jack Thurston? This art was used for a pressbook and movie herald to help promote the 1966 Seven Arts Productions film It! which was released as a double-bill with The Frozen Dead. Released by Warner Bros., It! starred Roddy McDowall, Jill Haworth and Paul Maxwell.

Some REALLY great stuff (as usual). I can't wait to see what comes next.
Sure looks an awful lot like Jack Davis' poster art for Horror Hotel (aka City of the Dead - 1960).
Lower right head.

Wow, that is freakishly uncanny!
The creature in the film looked a bit different.

Yeah, that's a little different for sure!

This is a strange example in that it has a generic green insert- this is probably a later company/thrown-together set with less included.
See in the UMA photo in the gallery...the nicer version of the MAD MAD MAD SCIENTIST LABORATORY pictured there has "Monster" graphics all over the insert cardboard.
This Hake's set also has less "goodies" in it altogether, and those that are there are fewer in number and more generic in look.
Reminds me of a set Bill "Toy Scouts" Bruegman had a number of years ago that he called a "mail order" version (as I recall), but that opinion is unfounded.

This being a mail order variety does seem to be a likely scenario given the differences.

Too bad a top title like WOTW had such lackluster art. It would have been a top tier poster, if it had art like CFTBL, or FORBIDDEN PLANET.
The "B" style HS is the only original U.S. WAR OF THE WORLDS that gets the big bucks. In fact, the biggest for any '50s title.
Who wouldn't want those ships?!?

This may be from IT! (pre-production promo art evidently), but I'm sure a lot of us will identify the monster face as a complete crib, right down to the rendering style, of Jack Davis's 1962 HORROR HOTEL poster art. Mr Thurston, a noted paperback & pulp cover illustrator himself, must have had no time & even less art direction to have come up with something so derivative. Imagine what someone like Reynold Brown could've done under similar conditions!

For lovers of classic horror, the current auction features a photo signed by of one of the stars of one of Universal's most beloved classics - Maria Ouspenskaya from The Wolf Man, known for her role as Maleva The Gypsy Woman (a role she revisited in 1943's Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man)!

"The way you walked was thorny, through no fault of your own, but as the rain enters the soil, the river enters the sea, so tears run to a predestined end. Now you will have peace for eternity."
In 1969 Aurora introduced the "Frightening Lightning" series of model kits. This was quickly revamped/repackaged later that same year as "Glow In The Dark" kits in totally different boxes. These "first issue" versions look the same as the later 1972 issues, though they have distinct differences. First, the boxes have a 1969 copyright as opposed to 1972. They are also on thicker cardboard more like the 1960s Aurora boxes than what followed in the 1970s. To this point, the factory seal was also cellophane as with the 1960s kits, not the standard shrink-wrap used in the 1970s and beyond. These 1969 versions are much rarer than the 1972 kits.
In the current Hake's auction, we are offering two 1969 kits, a factory-sealed example of The Forgotten Prisoner and a boxed Frankenstein kit.

Now for something a little different. How many of you have heard of the Japanese superhero character Ogon Bat (Golden Bat)? Created in 1931, Ogon Bat is believed to be the first Japanese superhero and is considered a precursor to later superhero characters such as the Japanese Kamishibai character, Prince of Gamma (who debuted in the early 1930s) and the American comic book characters Superman (debuted 1938) and Batman (debuted 1939).
We are offering two items featuring this skull-faced character in our current auction -

Since it's Halloween, we thought we'd share some treats (no tricks!) from the current auction. We've got a wide array of horror and horror-related lots this time, so we'll most likely have a couple posts over the next few days.
First up is a stunning vintage photo postcard signed by Doctor Frankenstein himself, actor Colin Clive!

Another Frankenstein alum autograph being offered in the current Hake's Americana & Collectibles auction is that of Una O'Connor. Who didn't love her performances as Jenny Hall in 1933's The Invisible Man and as Minnie in 1935's Bride of Frankenstein? James Whale certainly had an eye for character actors/actresses, didn't he?

Great picture of Una! One part of hers I always remember, though it was very short, was as the tobacconist in "Random Harvest". Typical Una! :)
Here's another vintage signed photo in the current Hake's auction, the Werewolf of London himself - Henry Hull! Check it out!

The current Hake's Americana & Collectibles auction features a bevy of original comic art, including this stunning splash page by Gene Colan for The Tomb of Dracula #1, published by Marvel in October, 1979. Art is for inside front cover illustration featuring Dracula standing in foggy graveyard and was inked by Bob McLeod. As the Count himself says, "There are far worse things awaiting man than death," like missing out on this art!

Well we know that there are 24 packs. And I know that packs of cards in Canada at the time had four cards plus gum but I believe that packs sold in the States had more cards. Perhaps five or six? Does anyone remember buying these Leaf Munsters cards in the States?
Let's assume five cards per pack. At $2100 that would work out to $17.50 per card, but with 24 stickers, 24 slabs of delicious gum, 24 wrappers and one display box thrown in for nothing. In reality the display box would be worth at least as much as the 24 wrappers and each wrapper would fetch as much as a dozen cards or so.
;)
