Title: Monster Soaky commercial
Post by: Monolith on January 24, 2014, 12:14:15 AM
Does anyone remember seeing a commercial for the monster soakies? It had Mr. Magoo and at least Frankenstein, but maybe it had the other monsters as well. I don't remember ever having seen it but I came across some photos
of animation cells from it online. Here's an image, it shows three separate cells, one with the Monster, one with the Soakies and one with Mr. Magoo. Just thought you might like to see it. You can find similar Soaky commercials on
Youtube, but not the monster one.

Although I can't find the monster Soaky commercial anywhere, (I think it might be lost)- You can at least get an
idea of what it might have looked like by watching this Superman/Tennessee Tuxedo Soaky commercial. You can see how they use the photo's of the Soaky bottles with the animated characters. I bet in the Mr. Magoo/ monster
commercial Mr. Magoo mistakes the Wolfman for a dog and the monster for the mailman, or something like that.

Oh, good to know. That sounds like a fun commercial. Do you know of anywhere we can see it?

I think I recall another Soaky commercial with Dick Tracy & Musky the Muskrat.

Rick Goldschmidt has a few more pictures on his Rankin Bass history blog.

http://enchantedworldofrankinbass.blogspot.com/ (http://enchantedworldofrankinbass.blogspot.com/)

Based on the pictures it appears that only three Soaky characters appeared in the commercial. Mr. Magoo, Wolf Man, and Frankenstein.
The Wolf Man is holding the three soakies in the sketch and there is a photo of the three of them with Mr. Magoo.

Ghost --- Thanks for posting the pics. Very cool. It would make sense that if they were in a bathtub that the Creature would have been in the commercial, but it looks like he wasn't.

Great information.
I love how Bama's wolf ears were transformed into horns on the Soaky, and how the animators  perpetuated the error.

These photos and clips are amazing! I love that Dick Tracy/Muskie commercial, especially the shot of Tracy singing in the bathtub. It's also nice how, in most commercials of the era, there is more full animation in these 60 seconds than in any 30 minutes of the average animated show.

ThiS weekend I caught a Matinee showing of "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" in 3D at the Alamo Drafthouse in Richardson/Dallas, Texas.

One of the previews they showed beforehand was a commercial with a kid helping give the Creature and the Mummy a bath using the soakie!

Especially neat since I have the Creature one in my collection.

Whaaaaa?!? Never heard of this. I assume it was animated?

It was animated and I WISH I knew it was coming up so I could've taped it. Looking online isn't giving me any indication of it which is very frustrating.

Perhaps contact the theater or group behind the showing? Would be a real coup to have this little tidbit available

Hey gang!

Here's a low quality, incomplete clip of that commercial with the Creature and Mummy soakies. My girlfriend and I saw "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankestein" a couple of days ago and they played the commercial again before the main feature. Wish I could've caught it all. It comes in on the part where the Creature is introducing himself and says he's "The Creature from the Black Lagoo-oooh hoo hoo, that's cold!" about the water's temperature.

Enjoy!

That's a concern/interpretation that never would never have reared its ugly head back in the early sixties. Sad but we've now been conditioned to always assume the worst.

Just reviving this thread to show off a perfect quality version of the Creature and Mummy commercial. Weird I only learned of it now, years later.

When it came to the Soaky commercial with the Creature and Mummy, I wonder if Jonathan Winters voiced the Mummy. I also wonder if Janet waldo or June Foray are voicing the Soaky Kid.

Dick Beals was the voice of The Soaky Kid. Paul Frees did the Creature and Mummy voices.
