Title: Trashy Garish Over-The-Top Envelope Pushin' Monster Magazines!
Post by: horrorhunter on January 13, 2014, 02:28:50 PM
I know there is another great thread for Warren Magazines, but this one is for the outcast, downtrodden, and demonized. So post your Eerie Pubs, Skywalds, Stanleys, or any other monster mag which falls into this broad and putrid cateGORY. Don't worry about condition. Most of these things were rightly beat to hell. It seems almost wrong to even have such wretchedness in pristine condition. We just wanna see the goods.  >:D

I'll start us off with some exquisitely awful Eerie Pubs from that hogleg totin' nut-from-hell Myron Fass. Below are the Tales From The Crypt one shot, and some vomit inducing Tales Of Voodoo (including the 1st ish: Vol. 1, #11, even the numbering was screwed on these things).

Here's that 1st issue of Tales Of Voodoo. Notice the rat chews on the right edge. Eerie Pubs wear rat chews like a badge of honor.  >:D

Thanks, man. I have tons of these things and I'll be posting them every so often. Hopefully other members will post theirs as well. This is the genesis of enough highly prized trash to choke Linda Lovelace.  >:D  :D

Not to mention, "thief" ...

... because he swiped much of this material from Pre-Code comics!

Skywald mags have gotten a bum rap in the collecting community for years. They have been more widely accepted of late, but they are still regarded as substandard by some. I've always loved the Skywald mags and I feel they exhibit the same level of excellence as the Warren mags. But, since they are still somewhat demonized they have a home in this thread.

Here are the first five issues of Psycho from Skywald.

I agree that the Skywalds have artwork that's almost on par with that of the Warren mags, although the Skywalds in general have much more graphic covers. I actually only discovered the Skywalds this past decade. They're much harder to find than the Warrens and I only have a few of them.

Here are a couple of modern tomes that are invaluable if you are into the renegade monster mags of the nitty gritty '70s.

First up is The Complete Illustrated History Of The Skywald Horror-Mood by "Archaic" Alan Hewetson. Compelling and just plain fun. It's OOP so it might be a little pricey, but well worth it's weight in gore covered gold.

Next is The Weird World Of Eerie Publications. Incredibly fun read with mucho info. It's a gottahave. Grab one while they are still cheap. And I'm recommending the hardback even though that Amazon pic says Kindle. I'm old fashioned that way.

It occurred to me that if Tim Burton wants to get out of that "remake funk" he should do a film on that nutty scoundrel Myron Fass and Eerie Pubs. Since Fass was such an extreme character it could be quite interesting. Burton's Ed Wood was entertaining, so his Eerie World Of Myron could be hellashously fun!

Four issues of Chilling Tales Of Horror from Stanley Publications. The Stanley rags...er...mags pick the bones of pre-code horror comics like Eerie Pubs did. Stanleys are much more scarce than Eerie Pubs or Skywalds.

Stanleys were published from May 1969 to October 1971. Titles include Adventures In Horror, Chilling Tales Of Horror, Ghoul Tales, Horror Stories, Shock, and Stark Terror.

Trashfiend is a very interesting and fun mag published in 2002-2003 by a talented writer and reviewer named Scott Stine under the banner Stigmata Press. It covers horror and exploitation fare from the '60s & '70s. Featured are checklists and info on the monster mags mentioned in this thread. Also price guides, but you can pretty much disregard 12 year old info on the value of these mags. To my knowledge only three issues of Trashfiend were published and have been OOP for a long time. I've seen Trashfiend #1 offered on eBay a few times and prices are all over the board. I haven't seen Trashfiend #2 or #3 offered for sale in a long time.

Scott also did a cool book which continued his love affair with trashy horror and uber cool monsters. Clicky el linko.

Thriller was a short lived trash title in the early '60s. It was a hybrid monster mag and girly/men's mag. It featured sensationalistic text stories interlaced with provocative pictures of scantily clad cuties in dire distress. The reprobate behind it was...you guessed it...the infamously twisted Myron Fass, who went on to helm Eerie Publications brandishing a sidearm that would make Dirty Harry envious (obviously Myron was trying to overcompensate for an extreme lack of...). Here is Thriller #2. It just wreaks of smarmy sleaze.  >:D

Scream was Skywald's third main title, after Nightmare and Psycho. "Archaic" Al's editorial style and well crafted stories were in full swing with the debut of Scream. Presented are issues 1-5. The Horror-Mood was oozing forth like an unstoppable Great Old One in the pages of Scream, baby!

I had three images fail to show after a few hours, one image in three different posts. At first I could refresh my UMA screen and the image would appear restored, but after time they just stayed as the dreaded little "X in a box". It was always the last image in each affected post. I modified the one I posted last (cover to Trashfiend #3) and re-posted that image as the smaller one. When I went back to Imageshack to retrieve the image it would not load as the expanded image. Imageshack recently went through an overhaul and evidently isn't entirely stable. I reported those two remaining failed images to the mods to delete, since it was too late for me to go back and modify those posts. I apologize for any images which fail because of possible problems with Imageshack.

The first, and only, two issues of Skywald's Hell Rider. This appeared a full year before Marvel's Ghost Rider did in Marvel Spotlight #5. Written by the same writer as began Ghost Rider- Gary Friedrich. Art was by Ross Andru & Mike Esposito. This vigilante rode a hog mounting a flamethrower and featured a bit of the old ultraviolence. Fun stuff.

Notice the black & white hotties huddled in the background on the cover to #1. They look very much like "the victims" in Skywald's infamous Saga Of The Victims which ran as a long continuing story in later Skywalds.

I have been having trouble with ImageShack since they revamped their site. Sometimes my images appear...sometimes they don't. If you refresh the screen most of the time they reappear, but this is very annoying. I'm going to open an account with PhotoBucket and use them from now on. Hepcat recommended them and he doesn't seem to have issues with his images appearing. The scans are the best part of a thread like this. Hopefully that will straighten things out.

I just checked this thread again and now hardly any of my images are showing up. When I get the account with PhotoBucket started I will repost all of this stuff.

I just went back to ImageShack and they had a notice posted: "We are aware of images failing to load. The issue is being addressed", or words to that effect. I'll wait for awhile and see if they get it resolved.

My only issue of Terrors Of Dracula from moldy Modern Day Periodicals, which is an offputting offshoot of icky Eerie Pubs helmed by smarmy scoundrel Myron Fass.

This title was published near the end of the Eerie Pubs reign of terror  and, as a result, had a lower print run than the earlier output. HTF nowadays.

I'm gonna whip out my...trusty Gick! #4, yeah, that's it, and give a quick overview of that Eerie Pubs reign of terrible...err...terror that I just mentioned.

Eerie Publishing began the bloodletting in 1966 with Weird Vol. 1, #10, and continued through 1981 with Weird Tales Vol. 14, #2. I know this list is incomplete because, even though it lists Eerie Pubs offshoots, it *gasp* fails to list the Terrors Of Dracula title that I posted the issue above from. Here's a rundown of the Eerie Pubs titles, along with offshoots:

Dracula Classics (1976) (1 issue)
Horror Tales (1969-1979) (becomes Classic Horror Tales circa 1976) (45 issues)
Strange Galaxy (1971) (4 issues)
Tales From The Crypt (1968) (1 issue)
Tales From The Tomb (1969-1975) (33 issues)
Tales Of Terror (1968) (1 issue)
Tales Of Voodoo (1968-1974) (36 issues)
Terror Tales (1969-1978) (43 issues)
Weird (1966-1981) (became Weird Tales circa 1981) (63 issues)
Witches Tales (1969-1975) (34 issues)

Offshoot Publications:
Gasm (1977-1978) (5 issues)
Star Battles (1978) (1 issue)
Star Warp (1978) (2 issues)
Weird Vampire Tales (Modern Day Periodicals) (1979-1980) (6 issues)
and I'm adding Terrors Of Dracula (Modern Day Periodicals) (1979-?) (? issues)

I remember an issue of From The Tomb which gives a more comprehensive overview of Eerie Pubs. I'll dig that out and post it a little later.

The most comprehensive article on Eerie Publications I've seen was published in From The Tomb #s 22 & 23, and was written by Gene M. Broxson.

Back cover of From The Tomb #24 featuring several caustic covers from seamy smarmmeister Myron Fass:

Here's the dirty lowdown on the Eerie Pubs titles listing from that article:

Weird (1966-1981) (69 issues)
Tales From The Crypt (1968) (1 issue)
Tales Of Voodoo (1968-1974) (36 issues)
Terror Tales (1969-1979) (46 issues)
Horror Tales (1969-1979) (46 issues)
Witches Tales (1969-1974) (34 issues)
Tales From The Tomb (1969-1974) (32 issues)
Weird Worlds (1970-1971) (5 issues)
Strange Galaxy (1971) (4 issues)
Weird Vampire Tales (Modern Day Periodicals) (1979-1981) (10 issues)
Terrors Of Dracula (Modern Day Periodicals) (1979-1981) (8 issues)

I can't express how truly great this two part article is by Mr. Broxson if you are an Eerie Pubs fan. Also, it is extremely well printed in fabulous From The Tomb style with lavish, putrid pics. From The Tomb is a spectacular mag from the U.K. by Peter Normanton. It has ceased publication  :'( but issues sometimes rear their hoary heads on evilBay. If you like Horror Comics, you'll love From The Tomb.

Pretty cool thread. About 20+ years ago I had full runs of the Skywalds  a dozen or so Stanleys and a short box of Eerie Pubs. Sold all of them. Mainly because most issues the content was lacking compared to the covers and I needed the $. Wish I still had them.
These I still have and it's crazy how the prices fluctuate so greatly.

I LOVE the Crime mags.

Marvel monster mags are of much greater quality than Eerie Pubs or *choke* Stanleys. However, they fall short of the excellence exhibited in the Warrens, and are appropriate for this thread. Really everything fell short of the Warrens except the three issue run of Web Of Horror, so any monster mag aside from Warrens have a home here. We don't love them any less than the Warrens, but we simply acknowledge their shortcomings.

Savage Tales was a superior effort by Marvel in the early '70s. With art by Neal Adams, Barry Smith, Al Williamson, Frank Brunner, and many other great talents, it cut deep like Conan's bloody blade. Presented are issues 1-5. The first issue even boasted the first appearance of Marvel's Man-Thing. And, no, even I won't lower myself to making Man-Thing jokes.  >:D

In the mid '70s Marvel flooded the newsstands with several black and white monster mag titles and squeezed out several of the little guys. One of those little guys was Skywald. The end came for Skywald in early 1975. I like the Marvel mags, but I like the Skywalds even more. Most collectors consider the Skywalds inferior to the Warren Publications, but I'm one of those who place them as equal to the Warrens. The Skywalds are appropriate for this thread because of general opinion, and I had rather post them here than create a separate thread for them considering the few amount of Skywald issues. Click el linko for the short version of Skywald history.

Lots of cool covers here. I've added a few more that I forgot I had until a few days ago.

Great stuff, Wicked Lester. I always loved that Terror Tales cover from July 1971. The artist must have used a Marx Moschops as a model.

I see that there are some of the Skywald western comics here. I have several and enjoy these as much if not more than the Marvel silver early bronze age line. DC had better writing but for pure B-Western fun Skywald is right up there.

Here's a heads-up about image hosting sites. I started out with ImageShack and have recently had trouble with their hosted images not loading. On top of that ImageShack is going to start charging to upload images in a couple of weeks. Thanks to Hepcat I tried PhotoBucket and I have discovered that they are more dependable, easier to use, and they're still free to boot. I emailed ImageShack and the guy said everyone's account would remain active and the images already hosted on there could be used anytime, but after the free trial period you would have to pay to upload. Needless to say it's PhotoBucket for me from now on.

Gredown Aussie horror mags of the 70's contained covers that ranged from craptastic to very cool. I only have owned a handful in my life and still own one called Knife Edge. There were many one shots and quite a few short lived runs that all contained combinations of  pre-code horror to reprints of Eerie pub Skywald and new stories. Also had some great titles.

Web Of Horror is my favorite monster magazine. I'm posting these again because these scans are much better than the previous ones. I think the three issues of Web Of Horror rivaled the excellence of the very best of Warren Publishing due to the sheer raw talent of the artists and writers. Lots of Wrightson goodness here along with Jeff Jones, Ralph Reese, and many more. Best of the best.

I'm posting Horrors Of Spider Island here because the adorable little spider monster looks a lot like Webster, the host for Web Of Horror. Whomever made Webster up must have seen the movie and based the little guy on it. Another good reason to post it is it's full of hot chicks. And we shall view it with a dash of MST3K.

Thank you, jimm. I had a few from decades ago, but I started diligently building my monster mag collection about 15 years ago. They take up a lot of room, but it's worth it being able to read them anytime. I have about 3K now, and I'm glad I'm about finished with some of the current prices on these things. I bought most of them when they were fairly inexpensive. I couldn't afford to re-buy them now. Mostly what I buy now are a few current publications like Scary Monsters, Monsters From The Vault, and Famous Monsters.

Monsters And Things was a Famous Monsters competitor that jumped on the monster bandwagon in the late '50s. It only ran two issues. It came out in 1959 (when I did  ;D). There were a few of these titles that tried to capitalize on the popularity of monsters during the Shock Theater craze- Monster Parade and World Famous Creatures were two of the best. The only one to really last, besides FM, was Journal Of Frankenstein in a different incarnation as Castle Of Frankenstein by Calvin Beck. I'll eventually get around to posting those, as well.

A parting note on collecting Skywald monster magazines. They are tough to find, especially in high grade. The later issues seem to be much more scarce than the earlier ones. Unless you have deep pockets you may have to settle for mid or even low grade on some issues. If you go the eBay route they can be found but most have expensive single issue buy-it-now prices. You will get a better deal winning an auction lot, but you end up with duplication. If you just want to read the great stories check the link earlier in the thread. It took me a long time and a lot of $ to finish my Skywald runs but it was worth it. As evidenced by the scans in this thread most of mine are mid-grade, some are high-grade, and some are low-grade. There is just something about having, and reading, and smelling, the original issues with those great old ads. Nothing like it. Happy collecting.

As an add on I'll say that the Skywald actual comic books which are mostly western and jungle seem to be skyrocketing in asking price. I saw a couple today in higher grade asking almost 4x guide. Whether people actually get these crazy prices is an other matter but because they are HTF I guess sellers will always be pushing the envelope looking for collectors who don't research. I have almost all the Skywald westerns and admit that I paid for F+ copies what was almost 2x guide because that was really not that much $ wise at the time. The Heap comic is all over the place ranging from $10-30 for the same grade. Waiting for that P.T Barnumish sucker.

WL
I've noticed that as well, WL. The magazines really took off in popularity the last few years, and it seems to be a case of sellers jumping on the bandwagon regarding the Skywald brand. If buyers are patient they can probably still find the comics at fairly decent prices, but as time goes on those lower prices are getting fewer and further between. As is usually the case perception is reality, and time is the collector's enemy.

I had that Heap one shot when I was a monsteryoung'un and I still haven't replaced it. OOPS. I should take my own advice and get crackin'.

In 1973 Marvel took a shot at a digest size publication known as Haunt Of Horror. It was done in the style of the old pulps with text stories and a few illustrations. It featured excellent talent but only lasted two issues.

#1 sported a creepy cool cover by Gray Morrow.

#2 featured a great cover by Kelly Freas.

The second incarnation of Marvel's Haunt Of Horror was a standard monster mag with mostly panel art stories and some text features. After the Exorcist there was money to be had exploiting demon possession, and Haunt Of Horror was Marvel's answer. It only ran five issues from 1974 through Jan. 1975. Most of the Marvel monster mags ended about this time. They had oversaturated the market and worn out their welcome, so they had to get the Devil out.  >:D

I was joking about the condition of that TT ish above, but that happened long before I bought it. I'm actually a little OCD about condition and always wash my hands before reading a comic or mag, and keep my collection in mylar bags with acid free boards in acid free boxes. Yes, I even store the crappy copies this way. A few years ago on a vacation to Florida I found a cool comic book store a few miles north of Clearwater on Highway 19 called Wonder Water. The store was divided into two sections- one was a comic store, and one sold bottled water. I know... weird, right. Anyhoo, I found a stack of Eerie Pubs, Stanleys, and Skywalds on the bottom shelf for a buck each! Needless to say I bought them all. Some were decent mid-grade copies, and some were low-grade like the one above (I think that ish came in that purchase). I've been buying all these things I could find for the last few years regardless of condition. If they were cheap and had a cover I bought 'em. Now sellers try to milk $5 out of the low grade ones, sometimes a lot more. I'm glad now I went on a buying blitz and wasn't too picky. Heck, some of those purchases were in high grade that I gave a buck or two for. Now high grade Eerie Pubs sell for $30-$50. Buy what you like and get it as often as possible. In future it may cost way more than can easily be afforded.

In the early '60s a Famous Monsters competitor appeared called Fantastic Monsters Of The Films. It was a great monster mag with informative articles and big fold-out posters. It was by Ron Haydock, Paul Blaisdell, Jim Harmon, and #1 Monsterkid Bob Burns. Sadly, it only lasted seven issues in the rough and tumble world of monster magazine publishing. Here are mine.

Here are some fairly scarce Bernie Wrightson fanzines.

First up we have Badtime Stories from 1972. It features several Wrightson stories that later found their way into various publications. It was advertised for years in The Monster Times back in the early '70s. The ad tagline was "It's all Wright, son!". I remember wanting to order one badly, but I could never scrape up the five bucks to do so. I hunted a copy of this thing for nearly thirty years in every convention, Comics Buyers Guide ad, and dealers catalog, I could find with no luck. Finally, I found this copy on eBay. It's not high grade, but it is a nice FN (6.0), and I'm glad I finally got my hands on a decent copy. If it weren't for eBay we collectors would be SOL on a lot of this stuff, and the stuff we would find would be outrageously expensive by now.

Pardon the annoying scanner shadow.

Thanks for this very cool thread. I have often seen these magazines at comic shops or shows and didn't give them their proper respect. I really like the artwork on these covers, but I'm sure my mom would not have approved on a lot of them! Heading to a comic show in an hour, so maybe I can branch out into this field of monster magazines. I have a handful of non FM's, and I really like the fold-out posters from Fantastic Monsters. If I find anything today, I will post later today or tomorrow.

Especially covers like this. I remember seeing this in the comic stand at the local grocery store when I was in 3rd grade and just HAD to snatch it up. I put in on the line face down hoping to snag it before my mom saw it. I lost track of which bag it was in when we got home and mom found it before I did. Needless to say she was both horrified and enraged. She yelled at me and made me tear it up right then and there. I can kinda see her point now but... Never got to read the gruesome stories inside.

Stan Lee struck again in 1964 with Monsters To Laugh With which became Monsters Unlimited with issue #4 and ran for a total of 7 issues. It featured full page photos from our favorite monster movies with joke lines typed into word balloons inserted in the photos. Most of the jokes were corny, and many were dated, but just like with our monster trading cards we love them anyway. I remember getting #2 and #4 when I was a wee monsterbrat. I looked through them so much I wore the covers off them. They were only 25 cents, but they were very thin.

When Marvel did their monster magazine blitzkrieg in the mid-seventies their answer to Famous Monsters was Monsters Of The Movies. It started in 1974 and ran a total of nine issues including the annual. Presented below are my first five issues. This was one of the best monster mags ever published. Most of the work was done on the west coast by Jim Harmon and Ron Haydock (of Fantastic Monsters Of The Films fame from the previous decade), and superfan/director Don Glut. It was then edited further by Marvel proper on the east coast and the resulting friction probably quickened it's demise. For one reason or another most monster magazine titles seem to be doomed to an early death regardless of quality.

In 1975 Marvel hit us with Unknown Worlds Of Science Fiction. This was a pretty darn good SF mag with a full quota of monsters. The caliber of the art was high with work by Neal Adams, Al Williamson, Richard Corben, Michael Kaluta, Frank Brunner, Bruce Jones, and many more. My full run is pictured below.

This is the Journal Of Frankenstein one shot published by Calvin Beck in 1959. A couple of years later Beck would begin publishing the long running Castle Of Frankenstein which would compete with Famous Monsters until the mid '70s. This one shot is fairly scarce these days and generally trades for $25-$75 depending on condition. High grade examples would be rare. I've never seen or heard of one in high grade. A real piece of monster mag history here.

In 1976 Dez Skinn helmed one of the coolest monster magazines ever, The House Of Hammer. It was mainly a text and photos mag ala FM, but it did feature many excellent Hammer film adaptations in panel art form. Many were illustrated by the very talented John Bolton. Presented are my first few issues. Issues 2-6 have eluded me thus far being quite scarce.

Oh, I agree!

Which was the reason I was hesitating to post mine, that plus the fact that they aren't at all trashy.

Here therefore are scans of my first few House of Hammer magazines:

This thread is really for any monster magazines that aren't Warren since we already have the other thread for that. The title of this thread is just a hyped exaggeration in good fun, kind of like a sensational cover blurb on one of these very mags. The title isn't meant to be taken literally. Many of the mags posted here are very high quality, the equal or near equal of the Warrens. I could have titled the thread as Non-Warren Monster Magazines but that sounds stale and boring, and not nearly as much fun as the whole Trashy, Garish...title. Also, any non-Warren monster mag has a place here whether it is a text/photo type or a comic art type. Many are tough to classify anyway since they featured both styles. Since this is all just for fun we can be pretty loose with the rules.  ;)

I checked the magazine and found no description of the cover photo. By knowing what it isn't I've narrowed it to something having to do with the "All Manner Of Fantasies" article which covers fantastic cinema from the very beginning with the silents. I Googled images for George Melies films, Paul Wegener films, and many others, and found no match. Maybe someone else that knows will post.

Monsterscene is a photo/text monster mag which ran eleven issues and was published in the '90s. It is an entertaining read but the most noteworthy thing about it is the fact that there were many spectacular Basil Gogos covers that graced the issues. Here are scans of my first five.

The #4 cover features some of the Universal Monsters Trading Cards by Basil and others.

Here's a scan of another House of Hammer magazine from my collection:

The magazine changed it's title to Hammer's House of Horror with issue #19 when a U.S. distribution deal was arranged. Playing the dog in the manger, Jim Warren managed to scotch this arrangement by rushing an ashcan edition of a Warren magazine called House of Horror into print. In order to continue U.S. distribution, HoH was forced to change its name to Halls of Horror with issue #21. Here are scans of my two copies:

I generally never post any Warrens in this thread since we have another good thread for them, but in response to Hep's post above about the Warren House Of Horror I thought I would post mine. I got this from Greg Bazaz through eBay ten years ago. Greg wrote The Graveyard Examiner for Famous Monsters. This copy is signed by Forry on the first page. It isn't ultra high grade but it is nice, probably a VF-NM (9.0) or so. They only printed around 400 of these things so I doubt if many exist in NM (9.4) or better. The highest grade copy I've heard of is NM- (9.2). These things are so scarce I'm just proud to have a copy.

Monsters From The Vault began in 1995 and is still being published, although Jim Clatterbaugh, the publisher and editor, has stated that the end is nigh. MFTV is extremely high quality, certainly one of the very best monster mags ever. Here are my copies of issues 1-5.

I bought these years ago when they were still inexpensive. I remember buying that #1 at a show in Atlanta for 10 bucks! I even asked the dealer (Rudy) why it was so high!? Now I would buy all the #1s I could for $10 and just hang on to them as investments. Prices have really shot up on certain issues of MFTV because of the low print runs and overall excellence of the magazine.

I strongly endorse that Skywald tome as well! I bought one over five years ago and I still refer to it on a regular basis.

I received The Creeps #1 in the mail the other day. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys the original Warren publications. "Warrant" Publishing tries very hard to copy the style of the original Creepy and Eerie and they do a decent job of it, although the quality is a notch or two below Warren as would be expected. The biggest hit on the mag is the scant size- only 36 pages including covers. The cover price is only $4.95 though, which is considerably cheaper than the average monster magazine costs today. The cover by Ken Kelly is good, and there is a decent full page illustration by Frank Brunner. Richard Sala strains mightily to look like classic Wrightson and turns in a pretty good attempt. Overall a nice effort. Don't be too picky about getting a high grade copy though. These people have a lot to learn about proper packing before shipping.

Crypt Of Horrors (Gary Heilman, 1973-1977) is a monster fanzine containing mostly reviews of movies and books. The first two issues are digest size and the third issue is magazine size. Issue 1 is very amateurish with practically everything done by Heilman (his review of Vampire Circus called it terrible ?!). Number two (from 1974) is a big improvement, and issue three (1977) is pretty good. Fanzines like this are a real joy because we can look back at that time in monster fandom and experience it again in a small way. Fanzine creators back in the day remind me of the podcasting community now. They show(ed) up in each others product with contributions, reviews, and such.

Issues 1 ('73) & 2 ('74):

You're welcome, Hh.  :)

Yes, Eerie Pubs are definitely classic Monsterkid cheezy gore. For years they were treated like trash and now they trade for big bucks. I usually prefer my Warrens and Skywalds, but I enjoy the Eerie Pubs and Stanleys just as much sometimes. Steak is usually preferable but once in awhile you just want a good greasy hamburger.  ;D

Sala has signed on some Warren original talent besides the legendary cover artists; Don Glut, Nicola Cuti, Bill Black, and Roger McKenzie are now part of the Warrant bullpen. Most of the stories are very good, almost on par with the original Warren offerings. Some of the new blood artists do a fairly decent job of emulating the styles of some of the classic comic artists who worked for Warren over the years. Jason Paulos pays homage to Wally Wood, Henry Mayo reminds me some of Frank Brunner, Mikael Bergkvist has a touch of Neal Adams, and Rich Sala himself does a pretty good tribute to Bernie Wrightson's style (well, as good as could be expected when trying to emulate an illustration god like Wrightson was in his prime in the '70s). Most of the stories are written by Sala as Artie Godwin, an homage to the great Archie Goodwin who was editor and creative force for Warren starting with those first few classic issues of Creepy. The only thing conspicuous by their absence are the wonderful Captain Company ads.. but this is a different time, and we can't have everything. I'm a diehard Warren fan with every issue of Creepy, Eerie (except #1  :(), and Vampirella (as well as FM and most of the other Warrens), and I get a little tingle when I get my hands on the latest issue of The Creeps. I'm sold, bro. Someone finally stepped up and started doin' it right, so board that Wayback Machine and spend a few minutes in the '70s with The Best In Illustrated Horror To Give You The Creeps. For real.

According to the Grand Comics Database (http://www.comics.org/), there is a two-page comic story titled "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" with art by Ricardo Villamonte in Nightmare #14 (http://www.comics.org/issue/214514/). I imagine that there is at least one person, still active on this site, who has a copy of that particular Skywald magazine and I hope they would be so kind as to let us see it. I also trust that many a monster kid knows about this pin-up of The Gill Man done by Bill Everett for Nightmare #2 (http://www.comics.org/issue/214505/):

I still very clearly remember the day I first saw a copy of this 3-D Monsters magazine on the newstand. It was late autumn 1964. I was perusing the comic rack at the News Depot on the north side of Dundas Street just west of Wellington in downtown London. Staring me in the face right beside the comics were two monster magazines unlike any I'd ever seen before.

The first was this very wild 3-D magazine:

The second was the first issue of Creepy.

So taken was I by these two magazines I forgot all about the comics. As a result, I can't narrow the date down to a certain month from the comics I remember on the rack.

I decided to choose just one of the two magazines, finances probably being a paramount consideration. Now the 3-D concept was powerfully exciting to my young mind, but the Creepy magazine had more and better content overall. Moreover, the 3-D Monsters was $0.50 and the Creepy only $0.35. That settled it. So the Creepy it was!

A sound choice too in retrospect given how that Creepy issue launched a whole genre of new horror magazines while the 3-D Monsters ended up a largely forgotten one shot. But a vague recollection of that 3-D magazine stayed with me over the years and I wondered about its identity after I started reaccumulating the Warren magazines again thirty years ago. But lo and behold a copy showed up on the wall of Dragon Lady Comics on Queen Street in Toronto some 25 years ago, unused 3-D glasses and all! I snapped it right up!

Like you, I was aware of 3-D Monsters for decades before I finally bought a nice copy with glasses still attached about 15 years ago. I believe it was purchased from Dennis Druktenis for around $15. Over the years some nice monster mags came through Dennis and Scary Monsters. My Vampirella #2 that I posted in the Warren thread I purchased from Dennis several years ago for $50. He advertised it as "nice condition" and I was pleasantly surprised when I got it in the mail- it was in VF-NM with off-white pages. I probably purchased over 500 monster mags from Dennis in all, mostly really good bulk deals in his "Scarehouse Sales". He's retired now. I hope he has a happy retirement and keeps on Monstering.

Thanksgiving morning, 1964, my dad went out to pick up newspapers. Along with the papers he brought home Creepy No. 1. He liked it because Warren used artists that were popular in the old EC comics. I was hooked from the start.
The 3D magazine was a favorite back then. I was thrilled to get a copy in VG condition with unused glasses on Ebaya few years ago.

Skywald's Hell-Rider ran 2 issues and was a precursor to Marvel's Ghost Rider. It was created/written by Gary Friedrich who was also responsible for Ghost Rider, and it was illustrated by Ross Andru and Mike Esposito. Hell-Rider was an ultra-violent vigilante who rode a flamethrower-mounting hog. Here are scans of mine.

The two huddled hotties on the cover of #1 look like "the Victims" from The Saga Of The Victims storyline which ran in later Skywalds.

It turns out the 3-D Monsters mag from 1964 was published by Myron Fass of Eerie Publications infamy. It makes sense because Fass jumped on any popular bandwagon and executed his entry with extra cheez. Thanks to Monster Magazine World for the info below. The entire mag is presented on MMW at the link below.

3-D MONSTERS
No. 1 (One shot)
1964
Editor: None listed
Publisher: FAIR Publications, Ltd.
Cover: Color Photo; B&W and Anaglyphic interior
Pages: 52 (including covers/no pagination)
Cover price: 50 cents
Estimated collector's price: $17.00 - $175.00

"We dare you to wear the magic glasses and see the MONSTERS almost alive!"

Easily filed under "so bad, it's good", the Myron Fass-produced oddity known as 3-D MONSTERS has enjoyed the notoriety of being entirely unique among history's monster 'zines. Slapped together with a mélange of whacky titles and monster pictures accompanied by minimal text, the focus was obviously on the anaglyphic photos that were included.

But what photos they were! Had they been simply black and white photos, they would have been immediately outed for what they were: cheap, table-top snapshots of Aurora monster models, assorted Halloween novelty knick-knacks, a CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON still, and a couple of posed, in-house shots.

Oddly enough, no other monster magazine used 3-D to exploit the technology or use it in a more creative fashion.

3-D MONSTERS has been covered in previous MMW posts, but only bits and pieces of the mag were ever included. Below is the original review from a 2010 post.

Believe it or not, the optical illusion known as "3-D" has been around for awhile. Introduced into popular culture way back in the 1870s with the "stereoscope", it was commercialized as early as the 1920s in the film industry as a new and exciting form of visual entertainment. However, it wasn't until BWANA DEVIL (1952) that 3-D movies really hit the big time. A number of pictures followed, including the film a lot of us are most familiar with as a 3-D feature, Universal's THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (1954). Other monster movies received the 3-D treatment during the 50s, including HOUSE OF WAX, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE, ROBOT MONSTER, and CAT WOMEN OF THE MOON.

While not entirely disappearing from screens, the effect fell out of vogue for awhile. It was not hard to see why the novelty wore off. Who wanted to endure wearing the goofy, cardboard glasses through a 90 minute feature? There was even an attempt to subject patrons to only have to don the cardboard specs during a critical part of the film. For instance in the 1961 production of THE MASK, the ominous voice-over would intone "PUT THE MASK ON NOW!", when it was time to watch another corny "dream" sequence of the largely hallucinatory and psychedelic movie that would later become a cult favorite. Promoters even thought of titillating viewers into theaters to watch X-rated features like THE STEWARDESSES in the swingin' seventies. Today, 3-D movies are once more back in the big time. New technology has made the effect even cooler, so movie goers are more willing to put up with the inconvenience of the necessary accoutrement.

The medium of comic books experimented with 3-D on and off through the years. The first to see print was September 1953's THREE DIMENSIONAL COMICS featuring then cartoon star, Mighty Mouse. The Joe Kubert-drafted 3-D HOUSE OF TERROR appeared in October 1953. Both titles were by St. John Publishing. While not ubiquitous (yet, anyway), we still see the occasional 3-D comic book offering on the stands.

Wholly unique and not seen in quite the same format before or since is 3-D MONSTERS magazine. Published in 1964 by FAIR Publishing, Ltd. (erroneously attributed to Warren Publishing on at least one website), 3DM is a bizarre oddity in the 50-plus history of monster mags. Part pictorial and part 3-D stills gallery, it is little more than an exploitation of the 3-D technique, applied to a market that had yet to be exploited by it. The result is a mind-numbing blend of captioned-splattered film stills from such masterpieces as THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE and I WAS A TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN, and a monster-mash of contrived Anaglyphic 3-D (two-color) processed photos featuring posed scenes of built-up Aurora Plastics monster models (as well as a hilarious scene utilizing the popular monster gag toy, "Frankenstein Loses His Pants"!). It is hard to imagine that much thought went into the making of 3DM other than to cash in on the novelty of the 3-D image (well, they did add a full page ad of monster stuff to buy ala' CAPTAIN COMPANY). With the obligatory glasses pasted on the cover page, one would have to literally tear a hole in the page in order to use them. Consequently, this was definitely not a magazine planned as a legacy publication. Indeed, had it not been of a topic near and dear to avid (read: slavering) genre collectors, it is quite possible that 3-D MONSTERS would have slipped quietly away into obscurity. Even Hal Morgan's and Dan Symmes' seminal history of 3-D, AMAZING 3-D, gives the FAIR Publications' monster 'zine a pass.

Still, there is a kind of fascination that can be experienced while viewing its decidedly vintage, time-tired appearance. Hastily designed and cheaply printed, it is no wonder that not one of the creators of 3-D MONSTERS dared have their names appear in the indicia. Nevertheless, it stands among the handful of uniquely-themed monster magazines of the past. For that reason alone, it is worthy of attention by any serious Monsterologist. Just remember, left eye red, right eye blue.

I bought a copy of 3-D Monsters off EBay long ago, only to receive it to discover the coating on the 3D specs had worn away over the years....or they were cheaply made in the first place.

Another reason why 3D probably fell away was the introduction (or reuse) as it were of anaglyphic projection as opposed to polarization.  Many films were filmed/shown in 3D using polarization upon initial release but it was a costly investment and over time if one print degraded or if both reels didn't run exactly the same....well, here come the headaches and eye strain.  Anaglyph (an already existing but not as effective process) became the cheap standard, especially in the 60s/70s drive in and tv days which saw many polarized classics converted to anaglyph; again a process which could never produce the same results as polarized 3D.

It was very cheaply made, after all we are talking about Myron Fass here.

The reason this 'zine is sought after is because of that magical Monsterkid year of 1964 when it appeared. Monsterdom reached a peak around that time which featured the launch of Creepy and Monster World from Warren, the intro of MPC Pop-Top Horrors & Unbreakable Weirds, and several other monster related comics and toys. We all understand the nostalgia factor and how it turns something mediocre into a must have. I never owned 3-D Monsters as a kid but I saw it and wanted it, so it has that pedigree for me. I bought mine several years ago from Dennis Druktenis and it still has the glasses attached. I have checked out the pics with some spare 3-D specs I have lying around and the Monsterkid in me thinks it's very cool. The cynical adult in me thinks it's a cheap rag but I just tell that guy to p*ss off!  ;)

The Complete Saga Of The Victims is a trade paperback which reprints the chapters from Skywald first presented in Scream, as well as the final chapter which was never printed due to Skywald folding.

It's been OOP for several years and sellers want a pretty price for a copy these days. Check out Amazon and you'll get my drift. They do turn up on eBay sometimes and there's one listed now for a hefty minimum bid. Jeez, glad I scored mine back when they were around 20 bucks.

Exactly. Thank the fates for warehouse finds, and especially for the Warren warehouse. If not for those our collections would be much the poorer, and the few copies that would be traded would be so expensive most of us couldn't afford to own many of them.

Bloke's Terrible Tomb Of Terror is another current monster mag in the Warren vein.

I believe they're up to #15 now. Creator Jason Crawley (Bloke) presents a fun mag, with art by Mike Hoffman and others. Issues can be found on Amazon for $8.95 each. I have the first five which I purchased from Dennis Druktenis 3 or 4 years back before I knew how to get them otherwise. I was planning to keep up with it but room is becoming a real issue and I've stopped purchasing new monster mags with the exception of The Creeps. Bloke's is alright, but The Creeps is a must-have for me. I think the writing is better for The Creeps and the allure of past Warren talent and Warrenesque new talent is ambrosia for this old monster mag dude. Understand, I'm not saying The Creeps is as good as classic Warren, but it's as close as we're ever going to get.

Got this copy of Phase #1 from an eBay seller today:

The seller advertised it as VF- (7.5) which I could tell was way off by the scans, but it was a great price on a BIN so I bit. I think the reason others didn't buy it first was because it had a price sticker on the back cover. I've collected long enough to know that these stickers come off pretty easy from the slick cover mags with light cardboard covers and sure enough it just peeled off with careful effort. Now the book is in FN (6.0) which is a good deal for the $12 cost.

Phase #1 is a great fanzine from 1971 featuring work by Neal Adams, Gray Morrow, Jeff Jones, Ken Barr, Michael Kaluta, Tom Sutton, and a story by Frank Brunner which was originally intended for the never published Web Of Horror #4. Love these early '70s fanzines!  8)

Scream Door #1 in FN (6.0) arrived today. Great work by Wrightson, Hickman, Kaluta, and Sutton. The Kaluta and Sutton stories were intended for the never published Web Of Horror #4, and the cover for Web Of Horror #4 by Wrightson is included also.

Absolutely! It's hard to beat Boris Vallejo and Gray Morrow. And, the Neal Adams covers are spectacular!

My Weird Tales Of The Macabre #2 (Seaboard, 1975) showed up today.

The seller accepted my offer of $15 and claimed the mag is in FN, the scans looked like a FN copy, and sure enough it is in FN. Wow, an eBay seller who actually grades accurately, what a concept!

I recommend this eBay seller that sold me this book. They grade accurately and shoot straight. Here's a link to their current listings: http://www.ebay.com/sch/andymac2570/m.html?ssPageName=&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2654 (http://www.ebay.com/sch/andymac2570/m.html?ssPageName=&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2654)

Those Atlas/Seaboard monster mags are getting more expensive and harder to find in nice condition. The second issues are tougher to find than the first issues. I'm glad to get that WTOTM #2 in FN for 15 bucks. That was only issue I needed to finish the Seaboard monster mags. My others are mostly in high grade, but that issue eluded me till now. I remember having a VG copy of that book in the '80s but like a dumb*ss I sold off my mags back then and focused on superhero comics. A few years ago I went monster mag crazy and bought nearly everything I could get my claws on, and not long afterward I got really burned out on mainstream superhero titles and purged around 8K comics from my collection. I still have my favorite superhero books from the mid '70s and earlier, but now my focus is on Monster/Horror and I'm comfortable it will stay that way until I croak. Tastes in collecting change for most collectors, especially when they're young. Don't assume you'll have exactly the same tastes in a few years unless you're over 50 (or maybe even 60). Don't overpay for those collectibles because you might not keep them forever like you think you will, and you'll want to get the money back out at some point to put toward other things.  ;)

Got these 2 monster mags and 3 others in an eBay lot.

I had the Druktenis reprint of Werewolves And Vampires but not the original. It's a little rough, around G/VG (3.0), but the page quality is good and it's complete. It's very hard to find the Charlton monster mags from the '60s in nice condition, though I do have some Mad Monsters issues in the VF range.

Didn't have a copy of that Eerie Pubs Tales From The Tomb (V5 #1). It's in VG (4.0), maybe a little better. Eerie Publications mags have gotten so expensive it's difficult to find even low grade issues for less than $10. I used to buy that stuff in mid-grade and better for a buck apiece 15-20 years ago. I have over 80 of them (and 14 Stanleys) but I wish I had been more energetic and actually finished those runs back when they were cheap. It would be quite pricey to build a complete collection of Eerie Pubs these days, even in low grade. At least I finished the main Warren titles, Marvel titles, Skywalds, and older titles like Fantastic Monsters, and Monsters & Things back when that was more feasible.

The other 3 mags in the lot were an upgrade to Screen Thrills Illustrated #1, and a couple of dupes I'll sell at some point. Man, it's really tough to find monster mags in nice condition for a good price anymore.

Picked up a dozen fanzines mostly from the early '70s for a very good price.

Includes Infinity #s 2-5, Phantasmagoria #s 1,2, Reality #2, The Sensuous Frazetta, The Magic Of Frank Frazetta, and others. These feature the work of Frazetta, Wrightson, Brunner, Corben, Kenneth Smith, Larry Todd, and other great talents of the day. I love this stuff. They are very low print run mags similar to monster magazines and underground comics of the period.

I got these via eBay auction very cheaply because the seller put extremely low bids on the auctions. I was the only one who bid in half of these auctions. For specialized material like this a seller takes a big chance when he lists them as auctions with low minimum bids. 90% of the time you only see these kind of fanzines listed as Buy It Nows for hefty prices.

Is the CREEPS comic magazine worth buying. Everytime I go to B&N, I see the comic magazine on the rack. But never broke-down and purchased.

The Creeps is the only new mag I buy! So, yeah, I'm a fan. Here's a link to a little review I did earlier in this thread: http://www.universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?topic=24836.msg476548#msg476548 (http://www.universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?topic=24836.msg476548#msg476548)

I'm nearly out of room for comics, mags, and pretty much everything except for very small items, but I preorder every issue of The Creeps to get the free poster and make sure I don't miss the issue. It comes closer to classic Warren than any other publication, and I doubt we'll ever see a better homage to Warren.

ANOTHER NEW MONSTER MAG FROM UK

It seems like for every stateside monster mag that gets in publishing trouble, two more new titles are announced by the UK. The Brits have something of a mini monster craze going on and websites like HEMLOCK BOOKS are teeming with chewy monster goodness.

Hemlock has recently been promoting the latest in their magazine line, THE FANTASTIC FIFTIES. Looking to be a title much like CINEMA RETRO where a specific timeline of movies is covered, TFF has some quality writers on staff and is edited by the renown and respected Denis Meikle. My next order from Hemlock will be including this brand new 'zine!

Ken was there during the classic Warren years where he did several beautiful covers. He studied under Frazetta (he's Ellie's nephew). And, of course, he did the KISS album covers among many other great works of art. Dude's the real deal.

I have a copy of the Warren poster for the cover of Eerie #57 as well as posters of some of Ken's other Warren covers hanging in my monster mag room. Also have the mags of course. Here's a net pic:

Picked up this copy of Rockets Blast Comic Collector #86 mainly for the Wrightson cover (though the ads circa 1970 are pretty cool). Here's the evilBay pic:

I love the old fanzines, especially the ones with Wrightson art. Most of them from the '60s/'70s are way undervalued in today's marketplace. With the relatively small print runs of vintage fanzines the prices may blow up someday when enough collectors realize how cool they really are. Right now the marketplace is dizzy from TV/movieitis, keyitis, and high-gradeitis, but things have a way of coming back around...it just takes awhile. Meantime I'll take advantage of the cheap fanzine prices. This RBCC is mid-grade and it was only 8 bucks.

Most '60s/'70s fanzines seem to sell for $10-$20 each depending on condition and who did the cover and interior artwork. Some that are highly sought after sell for much more, like Spa Fon, early Witzend, early Squa Tront, and oddball scarce stuff like Scream Door #1. Some of those sell for $50-$100, or maybe up to $200 in some cases. When I mentioned that they are undervalued currently I was comparing them to key comics from the same time period with way higher print runs. The crazy demand is there for the comics mainly because of the movies and TV shows from the last few years. Most collectors these days know little or nothing about the fanzines.

You can get a good price for the early Squa Tronts. I'm not sure about the later RBCCs, I only have a couple of RBCC issues with Wrightson covers. I don't know of any up-to-date price guides for fanzines but if I were selling them I would just check eBay for prices, and the faster they need to move the lower the prices would be.

Might be a good idea to hold onto them until the market see's more people collecting them and better prices, unless you need to move them quick. These days most collectors are hyped up for early appearances of popular characters from recent movies and TV shows, especially Marvel. Also, most collectors are worked up over high grade books. I believe the fanzine segment of the marketplace will eventually pick up, but it could take awhile. Now's a good time to buy them, not so much to sell them.

I've been looking for a copy for awhile but sellers wanted to get $15-$20 out of mid-grade copies (after factoring in SH) and that's just too much. Snagged this one (FN) for $5 plus combined SH. Most of my run is high grade but upgrading this one is very low priority. The main thing is just finishing the run before the years slip by and prices creep ever upward.

I don't mind the repeat at all. I love Ken Kelly's work, and that cover shows Ken's style at an early point in his career. Still awesome.

Fantastic cover. I had the pleasure in 2014 in meeting Mr. Kelly at a KISS function/meet-n-greet. Ken Kelly is an amazing artist and very gracious.
At his booth, he brought-along many of his lithos and original artwork, spanning many decades. From albums covers to Monster magazines.

I obtained the reprint last year and was underwhelmed to say the least. IMO a piss poor version of the Warren mags and yes I know this came out several years before Warren. I would just call it piss poor Picto-Fiction.

It can be read for free on Monster Magazine World. Part 2 is up now.

I checked on eBay and sellers want $20+ for the reprint and around $200 for a mid-grade original. I'll pass. If I find an original cheap at some point I'll pick it up just because of it's place in monster mag history. Not interested in the reprint.

I just received a copy of Eerie Publication's COVERS- everyone of them in glorious color, in one book! I honestly don,t remember ordering, but it must be on Amazon.
