Unfortunately for the story, the people who run Snopes.com live near the supposed squid sighting.
They actually went there to see it in person. No Calimari lunch there.

I might have bought the first one, 'cause I don't know what an oarfish is, or how big they usually get, but the squid? Come on!!!
Here is a real Giant Oarfish that washed ashore near San Diego in 1996-- that is 15 years
Before Fukushima.

Those Marines are holding up a 27 footer--about 250 lbs.
The Oarfish can get to 36 feet and 300 lbs.

That's a taka ichise or Hokkaido Sea Horta. Good eatin' although the big ones kinda smell funny. Sorta like a Tuna-Parmesan Casserole. Best to catch them while they are younger.
They are also hard to keep on your fork.
