Title: Salem (WGN America-2014 premiere)
Post by: zombiehorror on December 19, 2013, 03:19:25 PM
Looks like it might actually be worth checking out!

"Salem, originally developed for FX, is set in the volatile world of 17th century Massachusetts and explores what really fueled the town's infamous witch trials and dares to uncover the dark, supernatural truth hiding behind the veil of this infamous period in American history."

"Salem (then Malice) was originally sold to FX last summer. Then came the setting for American Horror Story: Coven, with the third installment of the hit FX series revolving around witches. I hear, with FX's blessing, Fox21 president Bert Salke took the project to WGN, which embraced it."

FX has had some pretty good series so hearing that they were at one point interested gives me a little more promise in it!

Now, I like supernatural horror stories as much as anyone here. However, I am not very enthusiastic about this series, based on what has been released so far.
Too bad they seem to be claiming they are presenting the truth about the Salem Witch Trials.

"Salem, originally developed for FX, is set in the volatile world of 17th century Massachusetts and explores what really fueled the town's infamous witch trials and dares to uncover the dark, supernatural truth hiding behind the veil of this infamous period in American history. The show, which centers on an epic romance, is said to deliver a new vision of witches who are real though they are not who or what they seem"

There was nothing supernatural regarding the imprisonment, torture (um, enhanced interrogation techniques) and hanging of 19 "witches." Twenty, counting the one crushed to death during his interrogation. No witchcraft involved in those who died in custody of the authorities. No Devil participating in the damage to innocent victims' homes, livelihoods, reputations, and lives.

And the preview showing a witch being burned?
Never happened in New England.

I think it might be much better to examine the damage caused by mass hysteria. But then, that may cause too many people to think.

Better they sell it as a fantasy series.
Claiming "the truth" then presenting a totally fictitious story?
That might be why Anonymous was such a box office failure.

I'll be watching purely as a fantasy piece, no matter what the marketing department has drummed up!!  Anyone convinced that the real Salem witch trial had any ties to the supernatural is.........well probably a fan of Duck Dynasty!!

And I hope to see more than one witch burning at the stake during the course of the show!

Bite your tongue, brother. All I know about history, religion, politics, culture and fashion I learned from network TV (mostly sitcoms and '70s cop shows like Kojak).

I, of course, assumed that everyone understood that I was only referring to current TV. Naturally, all TV before 1980 is to be used to formulate the totality of ones worldview.

Who loves ya baby?!?!

Ooooooooh!  I watched this last night, since I recorded it and finally had time to watch........Oh, Oh, Oh! It was pretty shocking! I won't spoil, but the character named Mercy..... that scared me out of my skin!  And precious Kevin Tighe.....
Anyways, be warned! It's not about historical accuracy, or any real historical event. It's more of a scary show about witches! With lots of naked people.  And Shane West.

Awww.... Scatter   :(      I would also like to let members with young children know that this show isn't for youngsters- like Sleepy Hollow is. There are some graphic.... ahem.. gettin' it on scenes.  And curse words! But mostly... the naked stuff is not regular naked stuff that would be acceptable to watch comfortably with your teens in the room.  Over and out!

Last night's episode  (4-27) wasn't as visually jarring as the premiere, but it seemed interesting enough to keep watching. I'm not sure how this story will move forward- but I LOVE the tar pit from HELL! It was pretty cool looking   :)
