Title: LATEST NEWS ON FORRY
Post by: typhooforme on October 31, 2008, 12:55:43 PM
I had had hopes of flying to L.A. this month or next month for Forry's 92nd birthday--here is news that makes me very very sad indeed.

Ron Adams has posted at the Bash group:

I received a call from Forrest J Ackerman's assistant, Joe Moe,
yesterday. Forry is not doing well. Forry sends his wishes to all the
Monster Bash Brood....he realizes time is short now and is letting the
fans know. Our very best to Forry, if you wanted to send a card...now
is the time. One time., back in the 1970s, Forry called on us to write
cards to Lon Chaney Jr. when he wasn't well...now is the time to send
them to Forry:

FORREST J ACKERMAN

Absolutly terrible news, Forry is simply irreplacible and an icon to everyone in the community.  I hope for the best and wish him well.

My heart just sank when I read this.  Some of the worst news to hear on Halloween.  My thoughts and prayers are with him.

Joe posted at Scarlet Street today that Forry is battling another infection and spent 3 days in hospital--is home now, and Joe is hoping he will rally.  Keep our old friend in your thoughts and prayers, gang!  Forry has great genes--his mom made it to about 94, if I remember right--  All positive vibes to you, Forry!

Robert,
We can only hope that our prayers and Forry's good genes will out.
I have a card ready to go in the morning post.

In his almost 92 years, Forry has lived a life that dreams are made of...  and he's connected with monster fans he created throughout it.  Certainly I wish Forry the very best, and I'm sorry he's not feeling well...   but I'm happy for him that he has lived this long, has had such a rich and full life, and has shared it with his fans in a way that few do.  He's been much richer for it (and I'm not talking about money).  For some reason, I don't feel sad.  It's not because I don't care...  I just don't think Forry would want us to be sad.

Well said, Bobby.  Nearly 92 years--and of those, over 80 of them sci-fi and horror oriented!  Forry's been a model to us all--our favorite uncle.  Be happy for Forry--we should all have such a wonderful life!

Forry has had some bad times before, but I don't remember him ever telling fans "this is it" until now.  I'd like to see him live to be 100.  But I'm glad we've been able to enjoy his company as long as we have.  Strange to know in advance that this could be our final Halloween with him.

His work on Famous Monsters of Filmland is responsible for me getting hooked on Universal Monsters. It started when I was 5 and a friend gave me a Aurora Mummy model. I started buying the others and had my brother build them for me (I didn't know how for the first 3 and then my modeling hobby started) I really liked it and then when I went to the PX, I saw Famous Monsters. I got it because of the pictures and then when I got older I started to read the articles.I started watching the movies on TV when they showed them. These events made me the fan and collector I am today and it was Forrys' FM that is the inspiration for my website. He has had an interesting life with some adversity like the rest of us. Let's hope for the best. Best wishes, Forry.

My letter goes to post immediately.  Talked to Forry back in 1993 when Vincent Price was ill , in his voice there was such compassion for the men who made so many of us have delightful memories of childhood, and such wonderful fascinations for all things fantasi-film.  Forry is tops in my book.  Thanks for this Robert, you're aces too.

I'll have a letter ready to go out in tomorrows mail, but I do so with a sad heart. A heart that hopes our Uncle Forry (aka Dr.Acula, Mr.Monster, ect.) makes it through this.  I grew-up on the movies at an early age, but it was FJA who supplied me with the back-ground information on the actors lives and behind the scenes articles through Famous Monsters. There's so much knowledge I've gained, that I would never have learned if not for his efforts. I've only met Forry a few times (Monster Bash), but I can honestly say that in a way I grew-up with this man. Forrest J Ackerman has given us so much, and I only hope our letters give HIM strength to pull through this.  My prayers go out for his recovery.

I received this from Bill Warren:

"Beverly and I went by Forry's today.  He was alert and responsive but didn't say much.
Joe Moe told us privately that the house is now in a "hospice situation," which I assume means a death watch.
He also said that Forry is quite aware of this, and okay with it--he feels he's lived a long, productive and happy life,
and is facing death without any fears.  We stayed a while; Forry's lawyer took care of some papers with him privately while
we chatted on the patio in back.
(I didn't know there WAS a patio in back.)  Before we left, I was able to say
a few things to Forry that I've held back (good things), on the assumption we may not meet again.
However, Beverly and I do plan to go back there tomorrow and maybe the next day as well."

So send cards, folks. Now is the time:

If you want to send eMail, try SciFiBiz(*at*)AOL.com or GoJoeMoe(*at*)AOL.com--Joe being his very faithful caretaker.

I'm told now--he is sleeping more, and speaks with difficulty, shortness of breath.  Ray Bradbury, who attended an award function, later stopped by and spent an hour with him yesterday, and then went home and went to bed.  Ray is 88, and certainly Forry's oldest protege.  I'm glad he got to visit for one last time.

Forry Ackerman is one of the most beloved mentors we Monster Kids ever had, or could ever hope for.  A lot of the history of the Monster Movies I learned from Forry and FM at an early age.  This one Man probably fed my continuous monster obsession, and taught me more facts, than anyone else in all the world. This is probably true for a lot of us who grew-up in the `60's and `70's. A part of our universe is about to fade away, and I can only hope that a miracle occurs in time somehow. My hopes and prayers continue to go out for him, as well as my tears, hoping beyond hope for his recovery.

Extremely well put. We Monster Kids appear to be on the verge of losing our belived Uncle Forry. It's a sad time for us but I do take some comfort in the knowledge he'll be back amongst friends soon.

Our Uncle Forry did something far more important than help found fandom and introduce us all to monsters -- he taught us that it's OK to be weird -- and by being our "Uncle," made us all family.

I know Forry has gone on record as not believing in an afterlife -- but on this one subject, this particular "nephew" is hoping he's wrong.  Godspeed, FJA -- the spires of Metropolis await.

Forry is surrounded by friends--they have been coming and going, saying their goodbyes, all day for the past 2 days.  Friendship and love all around him.  And I understand the house is secured--nothing goes out (in case anyone might worry about that).  Joe and Forry's other caregivers have made sure Forry has all comfort and no worries.  The white light grows stronger....

I had a really nice chat with Zacherle today. He was warmly looking back on his 90th birthday celebration this time last week at Chiller. He was VERY moved by how many fans and friends turned out to celebrate [about 1500, according to the Fire Marshall] at the Saturday night party. I wanted to tell him about Forry, but could not bring myself to do anything to dampen the wonderful mood he was in. I also am still hoping he somehow pulls thru this, although according to recent posts the situation appears to be getting worse. God bless you Forry, and i hope you can sense the enormous outpouring of love and affection directed your way from here and all over the world.

Though we shouldn't be sad when someone who has had a full, rich life passes at the age of 92, it's a little hard when it's someone as beloved as Uncle Forry. That said, when the time comes, I hope we have a wake, instead of a funeral.

As long as there are fans of the genres that we hold so dear, the name of Forry Ackerman will live on. Just his name along brings a smile to fans of the genre and somewhere in the travels of many fans, they have had the opportunity to meet the great Uncle Forry sitting a his table of goodies from the Ackermansion at many a convention.  Always with a smile on his face, Forry Ackerman was a delight to meet. With his ever trusty sharpie in hand, he'd sign autographs and usually tell you a great story from one of his many experiences being a fan of the sci-fi, horror and fantasy genres. His stories and experiences are special moments of which we never grew tired of hearing.  No matter what, Uncle Forry will always have a special place in our hearts. I am sad to hear this news, but like it has been mentioned here, I don't think Uncle Forry would want to see us sad.  Perhaps on Election Day, pop in that copy of "Amazon Women on the Moon" and see our hero once again as the ultimate President of the United States!  He'd get my vote and I'm sure yours, too!

We love ya, Uncle Forry!

The Man of Magic will be leaving us soon.

How I LOVE Forrest J. Ackerman!

He is the one that made me love the monsters...his presence in the world gave me a belief in magic!

HE is the Sultan of Sci-Fi and the collector of wonder.  HE is the eternal symbol of all that is good and right with world of fantasy entertainment.  Through his pen, Lugosi lived eternal, King Karloff reigned supreme and Lon Chaney never died.

Forrest J. Ackerman -the Ackermonster, Dr. Acula, FJA, Half-Price.

HE taught us well...we children of FM.  Don't smoke, don't drink, don't dope...read and educate yourselves, and most of all, let wonder and fantasy fill your heart!  MONSTERS are good for you!
HE proved that time and time again.

When HE recorded my show's voice over opening as Prof. Lampini, I marveled at his enthusiasm and joy in doing it.  We spoke on the phone and his infectious glee was joyous.  I also helped to arrange for him to be a host at a Drive-In film festival held here at the Dobie Theatre in Austin Texas waaaaay back in 1994  and then, of course there was the Famous Monster Convention in Arlington.

How I remember standing so close to him, talking to him as Joseph Fotinos and then later at the Costume Ball on Saturday Night, as Frankenstein's Monster, I caught the heavenly sound of his voice as musical notes while he sang at the Saturday late night piano sing a long.  He put his arm on my massive (as the Monster) shoulder and sang sincerely and wonderfully with me.  I did my best Karloff at the blind hermit's hut.

RRRRR!  Forry Good!  Friend!! I love Forry.....
   -The Frankenstein Monster

I honestly think the best way to celebrate Forry's life is to celebrate fantasy and wonder.  As I go through my oh so busy life as an adult, I'll pause today or tonight to look up and the trees, the clouds, the moon, and dream of places far, far, away.  Dream of  wonderous lands and places that exist in dreams and nightmares.
I believe in the existence of vampires, I listen for the werewolves to howl at the moon and I have faith that love will endure throughout the centuries.  HE taught me that.

Kong is roaring in triumph over the body of a Tyrannosarus Rex and the mad Rotwang is near collapse with his success in creating The Ultima Futura Automoton.

Words, so many words, and HE is the master of them all.  Books, so many books that HE absorbs and studies and writes and edits and enjoys.

While heavy, my heart is filled with joy and happiness.

Uncle Forry lives eternal!

Live forever Professor Bruno Lampini...and THANK YOU, Forrest J. Ackerman...for being born.

Sincerely.
Professor Anton Griffin

Back in 1978, I walked down to the local drugstore and spotted this issue on the magazine rack. I was 14 and had never heard of this magazine before. I bought it and took it home and read it cover to cover, and I was completely hooked. Every month for the next few years, I haunted that magazine rack waiting the next issue to arrive. My copies of FM are long gone, but I still remember those issues with great fondness. It was a great dream of mine as a kid to journey to Karloffornia to visit the dreaded Ackermansion, but sadly it never came to be. I'm sad to see Uncle Forry go, but rejoice in the 92 years he had here with us. The Monster Kids of the world are losing their best pal.

The lines are quiet--no further word at present.  Send cards, send positive thoughts.

I'll tell you a story I told at the CHFB, and I'll show you a couple pictures, too:
In 2005, I approached Forry with an idea for a project, something I wanted him to do for me. I mentioned to him the old saying, "Shake the hand of the man who shook the hand of Lincoln...", and asked him if he'd be willing to trace the outline of his hand on a piece of paper and then write between the fingers the names of some of the famous people he'd shaken hands with. Forry became very excited about this and he agreed he'd work on it. A few months later, he sent me the beginning efforts--Joe had scanned Forry's hand on three sheets of paper, and Forry had handwritten names all over them--both ON the hand 'photos' and around them. On the first page, some of the names were: H. G. Wells, Hugo Gernsback, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Lon Chaney Jr. and wife, Boris Karloff and wife, Bela Lugosi and son, Elsa Lanchester, Marlene Dietrich, Patsy Ruth Miller, Mary Philbin, Lana Turner, Rock Hudson, Gloria Swanson, Billie Dove, Robert Armstrong, Fay Wray, Merian C. Cooper, Gustav von Seyffertitz, John Boles, Fritz Lang, Brigitte Helm, Johnny Eck, Maurice Chevalier, Ray Bradbury and wife and 4 daughters, Erich von Stroheim and son, Hugh Hefner, Gloria Stuart--and on and on, including "the marble hand of Jules Verne's statue on his grave". Over the course of the following year, Forry continued to send more and more lists of names--everyone he could think of--I lost count at 634 names, but I know there are further pages  that take the number beyond that. At the same time, Forry began to list for me "favorite things", from books, candies, fond memories, "firsts" and "lasts"--including the first thing his late wife Wendayne ever said to him (she was a clerk in a store), "Can I help you, sir?" and the last thing she ever said to him (on her death bed), "Help me, Forry." Joe Moe told me that the "hand" project fired Forry's imagination more than anything had in a long while--Forry continued to send names regularly until early 2007, when his health began to fail noticeably.  This past summer I got an envelope in the mail from Forry, but addressed in another hand.  Inside was yet one more list of names Forry had remembered, written in a very shaky hand--he was still working on the project.
Here is the first page--the project runs on for several pages, but this one will give you an idea of how Forry did it... I was very touched to find that he wrote my name on the edge of his pinky finger on this page--he had stuck a post-it to this page with the question, "Can you find where I put your name?"

When MONSTERSCENE was little more than a twinkle in my eye, I experienced what some monster fans might consider the ultimate day. Don Post Jr. took me to the Ackermansion where we spent several hours discussing everything from the Maria robot in the display case to the 100,000+ volumes in his library to the original art from the SPACEMEN 1965 ANNUAL on the wall to the wherabouts of James Warren. I hope Forry knows that every issue of MONSTERSCENE was a hats-off to him. Several years later, my publishing partner Bill Harrison and I exhibited at Ghoulardi Fest in Cleveland. The hotel was in the middle of nowhere, so when we ran into him, he told us he would love to take us out for pie as long as we had a car. We sat at a counter at Denny's and talked shop. It was there that he told us how much he loved MONSTERSCENE and offered to contribute articles to our magazine. His first article appeared the following issue (No. 8).

Many of us have stories about Forry. Many of us in the entertainment industry even have some stories of frustration over the poor state in which Forry kept his treasures. But at the end of the day, when Forry goes, we will lose our Santa Claus. I'm writing him tonight.

And for any of you out there who are spiritual, say your prayers for Forry. He is not a spiritual man but I know he would appreciate the sentiment. For you non-spiritual Forry fans, send out good karma.

Steve

Very cool concept, Robert.  I teach kids in my art class about visual journaling and this project that you have developed with Uncle Forry sounds like a wonderful idea to continue. Perhaps a mini-book of All Things Forry with an artistic slant? Memories, artwork, etc?

With the advent of such available online services like Shutterfly, etc., you could create an awesome bound edition about the Ackermonster.

Love it! Love it! Love it!  ;D
Thanks for sharing!

I gave a lot of thought to what Uncle Forry means to me and tried to write about it when the Flickhead blogspot hosted a Forrest J Ackerman Blog-A-Thon for his 90th birthday in 2006. My "FMeral appreciation" (http://myweb.wvnet.edu/e-gor/4etribute/ (http://myweb.wvnet.edu/e-gor/4etribute/)), with lots of links to some of the graphic projects I've done for (and sometimes with) 4E over the last 15 years, is still online with the other ackolades contributed on the occasion. I don't think I can express my feelings about this wonderful man any better now, and perhaps Forry's other friends and fans will get a chuckle out of some of the images to lighten the darkness of our current situation.

I was blessed to have been able to spend some time with him yesterday. All written here is true.
Everyone should know that our old pal is in great hands. Joe Moe is right there , as is Dolly and Earl and the Hospice folks.

Aside form Ray Bradbury, he was visited by a parade of FMers Jim Warren came by as did Verne Langdon, over the weekend. Everyone has come to express what he meant to them. We were joking that it was like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn listening in on thier own funeral.

While I was there, Forry lit up with a call from a female friend of Joe's. The twinkle was certainly there. When I had a private moment I asked him to say hello to HG Wells for me and got an acknowledged smile (ever so slight). I had a few more words gave him pat on the arm and moved away.

What an amazing guy who lived an amazing life.

Rest assured that he is not  alone. He has his wonderful support there. Joe Moe is making sure that Forry's wishes are being followed to the tee.

I suggest that we should take  a moment to pray for those who have dedicated so much of their time to taking care of Forry's daily needs. This will certainly be most so difficult for them.

Damn. Damn. Damn.
There is no finer Man.
He is at his home with those closest to him, I can only hope we all are as lucky when it's out time.
Hopefully all the sleep I lost as a child as a result of flashlights under covers pouring over Forry can be applied to his account.

Thanks, Dan for the update. I'm glad you were able to visit in person and be our representative. I've sent Forry a brief note and like you I think we should show our appreciation to Forry's care givers and especially to Joe Moe who has cared for him all this time.

Man, this is sad news.  Forry's one of those few people (like Stan Lee and Ray Bradbury) who you figure will live forever.

When I was a kid reading FM, it always seemed like he was talking just to me.  Not long ago I was able to get a copy of the FM book he put out in the '80s and I feel the same thing whenever I read it:  he's talking to me.

When I read last night that he wasn't doing well, I pulled out my copies of Reel Future and The Frankenscience Monster, just to relive the joy of his work.  I'm not one to be starstruck, but last summer  I wrote to him for an autograph.  The day that autograph arrived in my mailbox -- it was exactly how I felt as a kid when I got that one most-wanted-above-all Christmas present.

To know Chaney, Lugosi, Price --to write words spoken by Karloff!! -- what a wonderful life he's lived.  The setbacks and the usurpers can never erase even a moment, even an iota, of the cherished memories he's given us all.  He brought us together,  generously shared his anecdotes with the same enthusiasm we would've felt if we could've met Bela or Boris, and, most of all, he was and is one of us (even before some of us even were!).

I hope, when the end does come, that it will be peaceful, gentle and that there's a smile on his face as he slips into a wonderful place of memories come alive.

I know you meant that in a literal sense. But the truly wonderful part about Forry's life is that he will live Forry-ever (sorry, I had to) in our memories and hearts. He's is simply one of those people who makes such a huge impression on monsterkids of all ages that on our death beds we'll still be thinking and talking about 4SJ. He is immortal.

Latest news is he appears to have stabilized somewhat--no worse, and possibly slightly better.  They are closing the house to visitors to allow him more peace and quiet, but he has been VERY happy with seeing so many of his friends, getting so many cards and flowers, and so on.  KEEP WRITING to Forry if you can--a card, a note--it all actually MEANS a lot to him, and perhaps he will even understand how highly appreciated he is by his many fans.  Honestly, he has no idea how much impact he's had on monster kids over the years!

Rest assured, you can pick up the most accurate Forry news from the Classic Horror Film Board forums, the Scarlet Street forums, and here.  I check both of the former every day several times so that I can report to you here with the correct news.  On both those boards are posts from friends who live near Forry and who visit as often as possible,so I consider the news in both places to be golden.  Our own David Colton, who runs the CHFB, inspires nothing but confidence in the reportage there.  All this is preamble to warn you that a report went out in the British Fantasy Society news saying Forry had passed--something which is NOT true.  Just a misunderstanding, a jumping of the gun, and not deserving censure--and it's likely that Forry might even get some wry amusement out of reading his own obit (especially in light of the fact that it was Forry who once spoke of "the late John Agar", which was a similar mistake--and which ultimately amused both Agar AND Forry!).  In a like circumstance, Mark Twain is reported to have said: "Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated."  Forry lives!

I appreciate your updates.  I know Forry's birthday is coming up later this month so I'll send a birthday card this weekend.  Hope it finds him in better health and improving condition.

Last night I was reading my latest eBay acquisition, Let's Scare 'Em.  There's a long interview in it with FJA as well as a really touching piece he wrote regarding the passing of Jack Pierce.  It brought home to me that one day (hopefully still far, far off) the time'll come when all we have are monster kid memories of this great guy.

Wish I could meet him, but in a way it feels like I have.

I recently lost a very beloved, very elderly, Aunt.

When someone has lead a long, full life, and it is becoming a chore for them to linger here, it is a good thing, not a bad one, to let them move on.

My wish for 4SJ is peace, wherever he may be.

I hope Forry keeps improving.  One of my favorite days was when I got to bring three generations of monster fans to the Ackermansion.  My dad was blown away by the experience and at how entertaining and generous Forry was.

Craig, very sorry to hear/read about your aunt, but your words are wise, too.

I visited the Ackermansion twice before Forry's circumstances forced him to move to the "mini-mansion."  I remember my first trip was surreal.  I could not believe I was really there.

I dug up the photos from that visit and scanned them tonight.  There's only three that show Forry.  I didn't take many pictures that day.  All I had was a cheap disposable camera.

Here is the Ackermansion:

It was a big house, but the descriptions of it in Famous Monsters had raised my expectations to mythical proportions.  I thought it would be a sprawling estate, like something Bruce Wayne would call home.

I knew it was the right place when I saw this license plate on the car:

I was excited just seeing that plate!

A friend and I waited by the front gate.  Forry greeted us with an eerie voice over the intercom.  I felt like a trick-or-treater stopping at the scariest house on the block.  The gate opened automatically.  Forry's voice told us to come inside.

A few moments later, I was standing face to face with the Ackermonster!  I just stood there, dumbfounded.  I didn't know what to say.  Forry and an assistant just stared at me, waiting for words to come out of my mouth.  I had none!  Forry grinned.  I just said, "Hello!"

More fans arrived.  It was truly an international group.  A couple more Americans, a few Germans, a few Japanese.  A mix of accents.  They had come from every corner of the globe to see Uncle Forry.

Forry led us on a tour of his house, taking us through each of his 17 rooms.  I saw plenty of props, toys, paintings and lots of books.

Forry talked a lot about his late wife, Wendayne.  There were pictures of her all over.

Finally, Forry gathered us in his living room and had us sit on the floor.  He sat in a chair and began spinning tales about Old Hollywood and his many adventures with celebrities and horror icons.

Isn't that a nice photo of Forry?  That's the Forrest J Ackerman I grew up seeing in magazine photos and TV documentaries.  It was quite a shock seeing him years later at Monster Bash, after he had grown so emaciated.  I like remembering the jolly plump Forry he still was when I first met him.

Speaking of jolly and plump...Forry was not the only one with a little more meat on his bones back then.  You'll see in this next picture that I was doing quite well in the plump department myself.

Here it is, my picture with the Ackermonster:

I don't think I've ever posed for another photo with Forry, even though I've seen him at least three more times - once more at his house and twice at Monster Bash.  Maybe I did take another picture with him at the Bash and just forgot about it, but I don't think so.  Looking through my Bash pics, I don't see one.  I think it's just as I said.  I prefer to remember him the way he was years ago, in happier, healthier times.  I feel very lucky to have been able to meet him at the old Ackermansion, when he was still at the top of his game.

That being said, I'm also very glad that he's still with us (as of tonight 11/07/08).  I hope he recovers from his current illness and lives to be 100.

Here are some pics I took at Monster Bash 06 of Forry with Max and Terry.

Forry looks kind of like a wizard in those shots.  There is something wise and mischievous in his eyes.

Now here is a photo I did not take.  This is from the Dracula vs. Frankenstein soundtrack CD booklet.  It shows Forry in his prime, practicing his lines with J. Carrol Naish.

Forry has always been the benchmark from which my world of monsters evolves from. He's the true General. He is my superior. He has been my influence. And his fingerprints are all over this forum.

Here's looking back in time (1987) when student met his mentor for the very first time.

I posted this tale on the Yahoo group several years ago, but I think it bears repeating now. It's the tale of how Forry Ackerman directly touched my life out of the blue and for no good reason other than the fact that I had contacted him. It says a lot about someone of Forry's stature when he reaches out to individual fans and makes them a part of his world. Enjoy my little Forry story and remember, this is the original Ackermansion on Sherbourne. And, no, I didn't have the foresight to bring a camera.

It was late 1969 and I was not yet twenty years old. I was working my first real job at the Crest Theatre in San Bernardino. When we got our one sheets (posters) and stills for display from National Screen Service they often used older, unneeded items as protective packaging. One package we received used window cards from some old, obscure movies to protect the contents. The cards were from The Earth Dies Screaming and Journey to the Seventh Planet and instead of tossing them out, I thought they might be useful to Forry Ackerman and Famous Monsters, so I sent them to him in care of the magazine.

In January of 1970 I left that job in a dispute with the manager and although I was attending college classes, I was spending a lot more time at home. I was surprised one morning by a phone call, "I'm looking for Jim Bertges," the man said.

I acknowledged that I was Jim and he went on, "This is Forry Ackerman and I wondered if you'd like to visit my house on Saturday." Needless to say, I was stunned. This was Forry Ackerman! On my phone! In my ear! I was able to say "Sure" and "Can I bring a friend?"

I got the Ackermansion address on Sherbourne and the time to show up and said good-bye to Forry. I immediately called my friend, Michael Reaves and let him know that we were taking a trip to LA on Saturday.

It was an hour's drive and we were early. When we arrived there was no one home. The house was impressive, a large white stucco, Spanish style structure with a red tile roof and exposed beams. There was a small sign near the door that read "Welcome to Sci Fi-ville", so we knew we had the right place. We decided to go grab something to eat and return. Nearby we found a Pioneer Chicken place and enjoyed some batter encrusted, grease soaked chicken and headed back to the Ackermansion.

When we arrived for the second time the door was open and Forry was already holding court with visitors. We wandered in, introduced ourselves and we were warmly greeted. Then we were sent off to explore the wonders of Forry's collection on our own. You've seen the photos and read the tales and it's all true. The sheer amount of memorabilia stacked, piled, filed and laying around that place was truly overwhelming. Bookshelves lined the walls and in spots where there were no books, paintings and drawings were arranged in a patchwork that wouldn't allow even a fraction of an inch of wall show through. We were immediately struck by the number of No Smoking signs and fire extinguishers around, since most of the collection was paper this made a lot of sense.

As we wandered from room to room we discovered treasures around every corner. Over here were the crumbling Brontosaurus and Stegosaurus models from King Kong. Over there, enclosed in a glass case was the fragile looking Pterodactyl that tried to carry Fay Wray off. There was a plaster casting of Ray Harryhausen's Ymir model. There were props and masks everywhere in every conceivable location. In the kitchen there were props, on the back porch a stack of movie posters and at one spot on the wall was a huge, hinged display like a giant book of every original one sheet you'd ever want to own. Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad and on and on. A door that led down to the basement was ajar and peering down at the bottom of the stairs we could see a foam rubber creature from an Outer Limits episode with a rubber hand protruding from his mouth. Forry said that the hand belonged to a small child who had lost his way in the corridors of the house. In the bedroom there was a large, copper colored Martian war machine from War of the Worlds and there too the walls were lined with framed photos and art work. There was so much to take in that it was intoxicating.

We made our way back to the living room and spent a few minutes with the man himself (I regret that I didn't stay and talk with him longer) and he said, "Since this started when you gave me something, I'd like to return the favor." He showed me a stack of posters and let me pick one to take home. I selected the AIP version of The Raven and I was thrilled to have it. And with that we said good bye and headed back to San Bernardino and our regular lives. But something of the Ackermansion stuck with Michael and me and we set about filling our own rooms with as much monster material as we could lay our hands on, trying to create mini-Ackermansions of our very own.

It was a great day, a day to remember and now a memory to share.

Posted on the Classic Horror Film Board this morning...

(SUNG)
I've been keeping busy
since I first left home,
with jobs, and friends, a life of my own,
But lately, since I've been further along,
Things don't seem as lovely
as the days of my youth;
My inner child keeps saying
I'm too far from my roots:
Forry,
Forry,
The puns fly east, the puns fly west,
I know where the puns fly best --
Forry,
My Uncle Forry,
My heartstrings are tangled around Karlofforny.
I'm comin',
Back to Famous Monsterland.
I'm comin',
Proud to be a Forry fan!
Forry,
My Uncle Forry,
I've had a thousand chills,
And millions of thrills,
From Forry!

(SPOKEN)
Forry...
My Uncle Forry.
The puns fly east -- the puns fly west --
I know where -- the puns fly best!
It's Uncle Forry I'm talkin' about, nobody else!

(SUNG)
My Uncle Forry,
My heartstrings are tangled around Karlofforny.

(SPOKEN)
Forry -- Forry, I'm comin' --
I'm so sorry if I made you wait!
Forry -- Forry, I'm here now,
Standing at the Ackermansion gate!
Listen to me, Forry! Don't you know me?
I'm your little monster!

(SUNG)
I'd walk a million miles
For one more of those smiles,
From Forry!

Dear friends--
I'm sorry to bring you sobering news after our happy news earlier today.  The excellent Earl Roesel of SCARLET STREET has just posted this at the CHFB, at Joe Moe's behest, and I'm passing it along to you as a very important announcement:

To all of our friends and family in fandom, I thought you deserved a firsthand report from the breaking heart of the Acker-mini-mansion. No, Forry's not gone (but was characteristically thrilled about the early obituaries) but he is weakening. He's enjoyed receiving all the correspondence and e-mails that continue to come for him and I am mentioning all of your names. Sometimes he'll muster a wave, sometimes a big smile, often at least an eye-twinkle.

I'm so sorry Forry is not going to get better this time. But even in this desperate anxiety we all share at the thought of a world without Forry, there is comfort. First, even as he fades, Forry is pain-free, still cracking puns (maybe I should just stick to the good news), totally lucid and most importantly - his own boss. Nobody could hope for a better farewell. If you know Forry, or if you've read Forry, you're well aware of his innocent, always practical attitude about everything. This circumstance is no exception.

I have asked him openly and he has answered that he is prepared to leave, not afraid in the least and that he knows we will all carry on for him. It has been my great privilege to be present in this critical time in Forry's life. When I first met Forry and came aboard as his faithful friend and ultimately his caretaker, I was well aware of the awesome responsibility I was charged with. Know that I will continue to take care of Forry with the same love and care that I would expect from any of you if you were in my place.

I've heard many talk of "childhood's end." Thankfully we're all part of a great support system in genre fandom and I know we will hold each other up through this landmark sadness. Good knows, I'll be calling on some of you when it's my turn to fold under the weight of this event. I'll try to update again as soon as I can.

With aloha and sincere respect,
Joe Moe

At least he's painless and going out cheerful, that is some small comfort at least.  If we have to let go now, then he desserves to go smilling and cheerful, for all the smiles he's given to us.  I don't want to let him go yet, but that's not in my power to stop.  I am so proud to have met him, and proud of how bravely he's faceing this.  At least he's not faceing this alone, and in our hearts and memories Forrest J. Ackerman will live forever.  Uncle Forry we love you.

God bless Forry !  He is an amazing man and he has touched the hearts of all his fans and passed on the legacy of Chaney Sr , Metropolis ,Karloff., Bela Lugosi ,Jack Perice ,and many ,many other amazing things to all of us..
Before FM and Forry I did not know anything about the wonders of these films ,actors ,directors ,make up men and so on . He and FM got me started in this lifetime passion I share with all of you my UMA brothers and sisters.

As I said ..God Bless Forry Ackerman and thanks for everything you have brought into my life,,our lives !

I never visited the Ackermasion :( It was a lifetime dream of mine but living on the other coast I never got the chance. BUT... He did give me the chance to see parts of it at the 1993 FM con in the traveling Ackermasion display. It was glorious !  My wife and I spent many hours in there over the weekend and marveled at the treasures inside that hall.

It was also the first time I met Forry  , a true gentmen with 2 of the coolest rings know to man on his hands :)

Thanks for that memory too Forry !

I have also met him a few other times over the years at comic cons  and he was always upbeat  and a true joy to talk with.

I'm proud to say that I  also contributed a piece of my art to him and the Ackermasion .. Years ago I painted a Metropolis portrait of the Robotrix and Rotwang for him  but in place of Rotwang I inserted Forry !  I sent it off to him as a gift and a thank you note for being who he was and the awe and wonder he added to my life .

A week later after going to see a early showing of T2 in the local theater I returned home to a find phone call waiting ,when I answered it ..I was greeted by his boyish voice thanking me and offering a tour if I ever went out to the west coast. It was a magical moment for me and I'm thrilled to have a piece of my art in the Ackermasion.

I wish I had taken a picture of it.

Thanks Unc Forry for the years of happiness you have brought into my life and I "for one" will pass on the legacy of all things you taught us to the younger generation of monster kids.

Peace to you in your final days  my favorite Uncle and God Bless and watch over you.

Best..
Tom Smith

Honestly, I don't worry at all about Forry anymore. He has no pain, he's comfortable, he's surrounded by friends and loved ones, he's being bombarded by well wishes from fans all over the world, and he's going out on his own terms. As for us... whew! But remember, Forry took us out of the dark ages of fandom. Horror fans don't have to be alone anymore. We have each other and believe me, we're going to need each other.

Welcome to our collective shoulder.

An open letter
***************

Dear Uncle Forry:

Just imagine!  One day nearly 40 years ago a boy discovers a Magic Man (and the magazine that he edits) that changes his life forever!  And from that Magic Man the boy learns much more than just simply the Ack-to-Z of all things Sci-Fi, but life lessons about the importance of generosity, imagination, enthusiasm, wit, and the ability to inspire those around you.

And imagine that this boy grows up to joyously call the Magic Man his friend!  A dream come true for me, for I was that boy.  And through your friendship and inspiration over the years, I've been able to keep that boy alive inside me, still wide-eyed and in awe of the wonderful and wonder-full Forrest J Ackerman.

How can I possibly sum up in a few words... or a few million words... what you've meant to me for so many years?  It's been one the great privileges of my life to know you, to have spent time with you, to have shared so many memorable moments.  As a boy  I found a very happy, welcoming home in the pages of the magazines you created, and a fair part of me... maybe the best part... lives there still.

I thank you, humbly and from the bottom of my heart, for everything you've given me (and countless others like me) for the past 18 lustrums.  I thank you for your friendship, for opening your home to me, for sharing your all your amazing stories.

And I promise you that in the years ahead I will do all I can to carry forth your message of imagination, your zest for the future, and your unconquerable belief that though April showers may come your way, they bring the flowers that bloom in May...

In short: Forrest J Ackerman Shall Not Die!  And so long as there are still dreams left undreamed and monsters to be made famous,  I will continue to sing Sonny Boy's song...

With all the love, respect and admiration I have to give, I say: THANK YOU UNCLE FORRY!

Thanks Terry and Raymond for posting photos!

Bless you Forrest.

This old world is better because you were here, and it's never going to be the same when you're gone.

I'm glad you got to see one more Halloween.

It may mean little coming from the one trillion seventeenth person to say so... but THANK YOU SO MUCH for everything, for always.

We all really, truly love you.

I do not post very much on the Universal Monster Army (and the other boards) as I am very much a lurker... who just likes to take in all of the information from the so many knowledgeable members. I have a tough time conveying my thoughts and feelings about the many different topics, however I can say that I do love monsters, sci-fi and the whole genre... and of course it was Forrest J Ackerman that introduced me to it all. At the first Monster Bash Convention in 1997, Ron Adams surprised me and had me stand up in front of a large group of convention goers to say somthing about FJA. I had no idea what to say as so many things were going through my head at that instant. I managed to stammer my way through my incoherant little speech... the only thing I remember saying was that Forrest J Ackerman was always there for us when we were kids with the magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland. I wish I were an eloquent speaker but I am not. I wish I would have a said numerous things that evening but I did not. In not so many words, what I did manage to do that evening was to have everyone applaud and thank Forry for giving us that special childhood and giving us the ability to dream and the ability to use our imagination. Because without him, the Monster Bash Convention (and all of the other fine genre related conventions) would probably not exist. Sure the Monster Craze was a culmination of many different factors (i.e. Shock Theater, Aurora Monster Kits, etc.) but I believe FJA is on top of that list! Again, thank you Forry for being there!!!!

I finally met Forry in person at the 1993 FM World Convention in Arlington VA. Shortly afterwards, I started the Stoner's Monster Mayhem mail-order business and then the SMM Fanzine. And with a large readership of 40, Forry agreed to answer questions for an "Ask Uncle Forry" segment of my little rag of a fanzine (at no cost). How exciting it was for fans to have their questions answered by our Monster Guru.... and then later to be contacted by Ron Borst, who had spied a copy of my fanzine on Forry's desk. Okay... so maybe it was 41 subscribers!!! It was through the fanzine and mail-order business that I began to meet so many new friends who had the exact same interests, background and childhood! And again it all came back to "Uncle Forry". He sparked our interest in this genre as kids and brought us together again as adults to continue on with this fandom Again, thank you Forry for being there!!!!

As many of us, I have a room devoted to my love of monsters (Stoner's Basement... a work in continuous progress). It's where I house my collection of Monster Stuff and it's my very own Ackermansion/Ackermuseum, which really comes down to... my own little homage to FJA. I believe there's a little bit of Forry in all us which definitely shows the importance of this man in our lives.

As conveyed in the numerous pages of this topic so far, Forry, thank you so much for being there!

Thanks for all of your love and support. I pass each message on to Forry. Right now, I need everyone's help to dispel any misinformation traveling around fandom. As I've said before, Forry gleefully relishes the early obits and other stuff. But it's important that friends and fans don't suffer distress from false reports and mere opinions. Recently, for example, someone wrote to me that they'd heard that Forry is "starving himself to death." That is completely UNTRUE. Forry has increasing difficulty swallowing. He chokes when he tries to eat or drink anything. Still, he's requesting Ensure and lots of water and doing his best to get it down. Let me make this absolutely clear. Forry is not willing to hurt himself to make a quick exit. He's just unwilling or desiring to get better. He's made the choice to bide his time until he goes to sleep and doesn't wake up. He's not ill with infection anymore but he has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure which is in early stages. His body is weakening and he doesn't walk anymore. For everyone's peace of mind, please don't give weight to reports from others who may pop in and visit Forry only periodically. I am at his side (along with caregiver Dolly, close pal Pam Keesey and Earl) every day from the moment he wakes up until the moment he goes to bed. All of us who are caring for him are trying to get him to hang around as long as possible without disobeying his wishes for no medical intervention. I look upon every day we have with Forry as an opportunity for more fans and friends to express their appreciation and love for him. Love, Joe

Last night we premiered the LOST SKELETON sequel at the Egyptian in Los Angeles. Before the premiere, the theater ran the original LOST SKELTON OF CADAVRA, and director Larry Blamire introduced the film by dedicating the screening to Forrest J. Ackerman.

It was a very nice moment, and the audience applauded in appreciation.

look him in the eyes and give him a sincere and heartfelt...THANK YOU.

I'm sure he knows how much we (the fans whom he inspired) treasure

Isn't it great?! An early Happy Thanksgiving to Monster Fandom-- here is Joe's post today at Scarlet Street:

Post time stamp-- 11/12/08 09:36:11

Following a long depressing haul, there is some GOOD NEWS.

All of your cards, letters and well-wishes have really caused Forry to rally! The torrent of love flooding the Ackerminimansion has encouraged Forry to fight for his life. I can't predict how much longer we'll have him around. A day? A week? A month? Who knows? But I CAN tell you we're taking full advantage of this upturn to really encourage Forry to get stronger and hang around a while more. I am actually feeling hopeful he'll make it to his 92nd birthday on Nov. 24th. Please pass this message on and let everyone know that their tributes, stories and prayers have had a miraculous effect on Forry. We should all continue to support him (and each other) and enjoy his presence as long as we are able...
Thank you all so much!
Joe

Josie, No news is, hopefully, good news.  Last I heard--on Facebook--Forry is hanging in there!  At CHFB they are saying he has been drinking his Ensure and that friend Angus Scrimm brought him some home-made chicken soup.  Remember, Forry turns 92 on NOV 23--it's not too soon to start sending birthday cards and letters.  And for that matter, keep on sending all kinds of happy cards and letters!  Forry loves getting them, and we feel that all the positive attention from fans has had a positive effect on him in this!  Write on?  RIGHT ON!

Title: The Perfect Forry Card
Post by: Cinemacabre on November 17, 2008, 01:35:50 PM
Found this at the card store this morning:

A shot of a cake and a seperate shot of an extremely stunning bikini-clad woman on the front. Under the cake it says, "This is your cake." Under the woman it says, "This is Edith." At the bottom of the front of the card it says, "You must choose which one you want." When you open the card it says, "Because you can't have your cake and Edith too."

If Forry is Forry, he won't choose the cake... that's for darn sure! I'm sending it out in tomorrow's mail. Keep in mind that even though there traditionally isn't a lot of Thanksgiving mail, it will take longer to get to him, around the holiday. My suggestion, mail early.

That is a noble and nice thing to do.  Just so you know Forry is in no shape to read the cards or letters and no one is reading them to him.  I was told by a friend who did get to see Forry that he is not up to it, the energy just is not there.  In the end they will be able to say Forry got X amount of cards and letters.

Latest news on Forry at CHFB states that a visitor found him still laughing at puns, but very weak--able to speak a little, but obviously frustrated with the infirmities of old age.  He's getting wonderful care--Joe and Dolly, Earl Roesel, therapist Jose--someone is with him 24/7.  Send him your love, monster kids!  Here's his address again.  Remember his birthday--I have it right, now, I think:  NOV 24, the day after the Karloff, Boris and Sara!

Tomorrow, Monday, will be Forry's 92nd birthday!  But yesterday, in Los Angeles, a group of his friends got together at a local book store and had a celebration for his birthday ahead of time.  I share info posted at CHFB by the member whose user name, in loving tribute to two of his heroes, is ForrestJBradbury.  I regret I don't know his real name, but suffice to know he's a close friend of Forry's.

Ray Bradbury, Angus Scrimm, George Clayton Johnson, Dennis Etchison and many more gathered, gave speeches and had cake and made a phone call to Forry, who was very touched.  There were 2 cakes, one with Forry's image on it, and one with Universal monsters.  After the get-together, the monster cake was hand-delivered (by ForrestJBradbury) to Forry along with a huge card signed by many friends and a couple special letters--one from Bill Nolan and one from Ray Harryhausen.

FJB reports that Forry has beat the pneumonia and kidney infection, but of course is still very very weak--the congestive heart failure is a fact of life and can't be made to go away--but Forry is still ticking and has pain only from a bedsore (which, of course, is being taken care of).  Mister Monster is enjoying all the love and good wishes you've sent him.  Keep writing, gang!

Very happy to hear Forry is getting better, but as you stated Robert, the congestive heart failure will be a permanent shadow hanging over him.  I fear there will be constant fluctuations between his getting better and getting worst from here on out.  On a more positive note at least he knows he's loved, and the fantastic influence he's had among fans.

Forry Update:

The Ackermonster is currently fighting an infection. He's taking antibiotics and resting comfortably now. He is expected to get better within 24 hours. He has enjoyed the hundreds of cards and letters he's received from all of you. Also some great puns sent by fans (don't tell anyone, but I've enjoyed them too - send more). We can only read a portion of the vast amount of mail to him each day. However, I do read the names of each sender as the mail comes in. He's aware of all who are thinking of him. Forry may be 92 and showing it, but even in his frailty he's pretty tough. He still has a smile for me every morning.

Sad to hear about Forry.
I remember buying my first Famous Monsters mag in the PX where my Father was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany in 1967. I was about 9. I think it was #42? I was hooked ever since. Forry added a lot to my life and made these movies fun. I will never forget having the opportunity to visit his home in LA.
Please get well Forry!
