Title: Vending Machine Monster Items
Post by: horrorhunter on November 01, 2013, 01:58:30 PM
I did a search and found no existing thread for this so I thought it appropriate to start one since many of us have fond memories of feeding coins in vending machines and getting cool monster stuff (and usually gumballs). I'll start us off with the little monster wallets and mini money, along with original display card.

I obtained this from evilBay and it came with a crapload of the tiny mini money bills. Does anyone know if there were any other little monster wallets besides the three in the photo?

Here is another posting of my Monster Head Rings that were knocked off the MPC Pop-Top heads. Also, I'm posting my upgraded original display card that I got in an eBay auction which included some other monster vending items.

I think it was just those three on the wallets and charms.

Thanks, Mike. That means I don't have to hunt anymore.  ;)

Being a collector is a double edged sword. You're proud of what you have, but obsess over what you need to complete the set. This wallet set is complete.  :)

I used to LOVE those machines! I really went for the one's that had little rubber creatures like rats and bats in them. You never see any of those machines with that kind of stuff in them today.

Those seem to be the only monsters available.  But the "wallets" come in four colors: Black, Blue, Red and Yellow.

Also, there is a red set with loops for hanging on charm bracelets or wearing as pendants.  The monsters are printed on white, yellow and green paper.

It seems to me I had some sets of Beatles wallets just like these back in Toy Shop. There were several finds of these types of vending toys (1960s) back in the late 1980s. I think these were found by a guy in Ohio who was good at turning up cool vintage trinkety items like these.

Wow! That is an awesome collection and great info, MFS. Are those yours? Also, how much mini money came with a wallet? I got a pile of it in the auction.

I never had the mini wallets when I was a kid but I loved this stuff and do even more now. I'll probably be content with my three black wallets, mini money, and display card because these things seem to be a little pricey when they finally pop up. But if I ever find a good deal on the other variations I'll grab 'em.

Thanks for the post, MFS. That's some fabulous stuff.  :)

And "I'M A BATMAN FAN!" tim pins, and a treasured little plastic Mercury capsule with an Astronaut inside, and... Rink's Bargain City was a goldmine!

>You never see any of those machines with that kind of stuff in them today.<

Not totally true. Though more expensive, I still see them around NYC; got some neat little Popeye figures in one a few years back.

Not mine - just someone else's picture saved in my files.  I think this came from another member - but that is for them to volunteer.

Don't know how many bills came in each wallet.  I do know that someone on eBay was selling a ton of them loose at one time.  I also used to see the vending card and unattached stickers for sale on eBay.  Haven't seen any in quite a while.

Thought you'd like to see what else is out there.

Look harder. And look through the eyes of the kid you once were as opposed to the old fart grown-up you've now become. There's still a lot of very cool stuff sold in vending machines. For Easter this year my local Metro supermarket has bubble gum dinosaur eggs with a gummy jelly baby dino inside each egg! I mean how cool is that?

i don't remember if this was an 80s or 90s gumball prize...
either way it's a fun little piece of monster vending history that you don't see everyday.

here is one of my labors of love. i put two of these babies together very slowly...piece by piece.

first, i obtained the two header cards. second, the inventory, capsules, and water decals ....and finally, the machines, stands, and correct coin mechs. i sold one of them earlier this year. this is the one i decided to keep. im a sucker for glow in the dark monster stuff... and if it also happens to be gumball / vending related?

There were. The packages I bought as a kid in the late 70s had fewer rings. Fun to see this one.

Vintage gumball machines are boss!

Since gumball machines were a big part of my life when I was a kid, I bought three vintage ones in 1981 shortly after I started re-accumulating the treasures of my younger days. One I sold to a friend, but the other two I repainted and still have. Here's one of them:

I've mixed little silver and gold charms in with the gumballs. I have some little purple bats left over from Halloween. If I could find a proper Batman (or perhaps Dark Shadows) card or sticker, I could re-theme my machine!

I also bought a Bozo gumball machine at a toy show about seven years ago:

The only Bozo machine I ever saw as a kid was in Ken's Variety on Wharncliffe Road but it was so cool that it left quite the impression on my mind. I therefore had to buy the one I saw at the show.  I need to take it apart though since it's not working. It seems to be jammed somehow.

My MPC Pop-Topish rings by Henal:

Not sure if Henal was affiliated with MPC or they just ripped 'em off, but these are some of my favorite monster vending toys. They're exactly like the MPC Pop-Top Horrors heads in size, appearance, and detail. Note that the weird 6th ring (2nd row, right) is the only one that isn't modeled after a Pop-Top. I'm not really sure what that one is based on or what sort of monster it's supposed to be. Odd choice.

These are the brightly colored neon versions. To see the matte versions check the UMA gallery. The matte versions aren't as wildly colorful but show off the details of the sculpts much more clearly. I like both versions. If I ever saw matte versions for sale I would certainly try to get 'em. I haven't seen any of these for sale since I bought these six a couple of years ago, and I hadn't seen any for sale at all before that. They must be fairly scarce.

here's a fun five cent card i picked up a while back.
i'm really interested in that little red Frankenstein head in the bottom row.

i've seen a few cards show up over the years with these little guys on them in various colors...
but i've never seen any of them loose before.
