I know Thurber disliked the Danny Kaye version based on his short story, because it took a story about an everyday guy having his daydreams, and made it into a full fledged proto Don Knotts everyday inept slob saves the world musical comedy adventure. I think Thurber would enjoy this version even less.
As far as the earlier film is concerned, Thurber's opinion of the film version, reminds me of the feelings Stephen King had toward Kubrick's shinning. I like both versions of Walter Mitty and the Shinning, but recognize that there is a difference between a good story in print and a good film, even if the director takes the story in a different direction than the Author intended.
In the case of this newest version of "Walter Mitty", I can't imagine liking it more than either the Kaye film, or Thurber short story. If the preview is any indication of what I'm going to see regarding this version of Walter Mitty, I'm no doubt going to enjoy it a lot less (if I even bother to see it in the first place).
It looks far-removed from the source material, the Danny Kate film, and anything I'd consider "entertainment."

On the other hand, we may be able to experience the magic of Ben Stiller taking flight.
