Title: You Don't hear much about Sherlock Holmes the Hound of the Baskervilles
Post by: Wolf Man on October 26, 2008, 05:42:51 PM
I was not really into Sherlock Holmes but caught this movie once when I was a kid and the sets were fantastic.  Pure horror movie stuff.  It is almost a werewolf tale.  It is definitely worth watching and I recommend it if you are a fan of classic horror check this one out if for nothing but the atmosphere and scenery.

Wow, Wolf - I dunno about that!

It's considered a classic novel; one of the better Holmes; and has been filmed repeatedly - from several Silents, up till the recent TV movie.

Best,
-Craig "Sometime Sherlock" W.

If your talking about the version with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, then yes the scenery is creepy as hell. The atmosphere of the moors has a truly gothic feel.  Not a big Sherlock Holmes fan, but had to check it out when I saw who the stars were. Cushing and Lee always work well together and complement each other.

I was referring to the one with Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes but the Lee/Cushing one is awesome as well.

Basil Rathbone looked so much like Sherlock Holmes,it was uncanny. He suited the role beautifully. The black and white hound of the baskervilles was magnificent.I also loved the peter cushing hound of the baskervilles, especially at the beginning, when everything is focused on Sir Henry Baskerville in his fox hunting gear, torturing a peasant and bellowing '' Hounds! Release The Hounds! ''.

It is the most horror-esque of the Holmes movies, except for possibly Young Sherlock Holmes.

Of course, in pastiche, Sherlock has met Dracula several times.  I'd love to see one of those books made into a movie!

"Hound of the Baskervilles" was indeed atmospheric and reminiscent of a Universal horror movie, although the series was still at 20th Century Fox for that film, as well as "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes".  After the series moved to Universal, there was at least one film in the series that stood out and played like a straight up horror movie, "The Scarlet Claw", which in a way is similar to "Hound".  Its my personal favorite of the Rathbone/Bruce Holmes' series and is definitely worth checking out if you haven't seen it.  Also, the movie that followed The Scarlet Claw in the series, "The Pearl of Death", features what may be considered a UniMonster to some of us, The Creeper, portrayed by none other than Rondo Hatton...good old Rondy!!

I just put on order both the Origina H of the B and also the Hammer one.

The Scarlet Claw eh?  I will hunt that one down as well if you recommend it.  Sounds like a good time.

Thanks

Basil Rathbone  of HOTB version is my Favorite Sherlock Holmes and one of my favorite movies. When I was a young pup. It was shown On my TV horror Show, Called Project Terror, at Midnight. I caught the first half of it, and the Sandman go the best of me. I was like 7 years old. I watched it around 5 years ago and have  watched it, once a year, since then.

Thanks for the head's up, Wichy.  Such a download will take 10 hours of uninterrupted online time for me, so I'll probably have to wait till I get back to the states for it.
