More closeups please! And don't forget shots of the Marx Bathing Beauties.
:)
I've never heard of Nutty Mads before but they are very cool.
Thanks folks. :)
Hepcat, hopefully my photography will improve. Later on I'll take some of the figures out and do some closeups. I know they are all kinda crowded in there.
BTW, those two female figures on the bottom shelf with the Blame-Its are Marx Campus Cuties. There were several in the run but I only have the two. Campus Cuties are the same size as Marx Universal Monsters and Nutty Mads, whereas Marx Bathing Beauties are only 60mm (a little over 2 1/2", or playset size).

Flower, the Nutty Mads were made by Marx and came out in 1963/1964. They were inspired by the whole Fink thing with the monster hot rods by Ed "Big Daddy" Roth and Stanley Mouse. There were three series of six each of the regular Nutty Mads. They also made some Nutty Mad Generals which I think were only sold in England and are very HTF and expensive. The little powder blue kids are called Blame-Its. Also, Marx made their version of the Hawk Weird-Ohs monster hot rods.
I agree on the coolness. I loved them when I was a little monsterkid, and I love 'em just as much now that I'm a big monsterkid. 8)

Not extreme closeups. Just do a few at a time arranged by series and properly labelled.

Those are good clear photos Hepcat. I'm having trouble getting clear ones. If I use macro, the flash won't work and they look dark. If I use normal setting with the flash I can't get a good image if I get close. The camera is 12.1 Megapixel. Is that just not enough?
I use it with pics I take of individual items in my kitchen actually. I have the main lighting, the stove light and a 3rd clamp on light I can control how well lit I want the subject. Work great with no naughty flash mark on the item.
Here's an example of a pic I just took with my amateurish photo booth as described above. My trusty Canon a590 at full resolution (8 megs), macro, no flash. The pic comes out sized at 3264 by 2448. Any photo program, in my case its ten year old presto image folio, resized to 888 by 666, cropped and sharpened a bit, and I'm done. After you done it awhile you can get all that I've said done on the pc in a minute or 2. You can even do better with shadows and back ground if you experiment enuff. You have alot of cool stuff to take pics of!

Then I need to make a little photo shoot area and shoot the items up close one at a time with good lighting on macro. Seems obvious now, but for some reason I thought I could get decent pics by just randomly shooting at my shelves full of junk....
FUTOGRUFFY HARRD....
Thanks for the help, friend. I guess I will have to work a little to get good shots. :)
Some use "controlled" flash and whatnot but I haven't tried that. Not sure my camera has it, being a basic model as such. Anyhow try a few methods, you'll find one you like.

Interesting that I wasn't even aware of either the Hawk Silly Surfers (or Frantics) as a kid. I was wondering if they were even sold in my neck of the woods. It wasn't exactly surfing country where I lived.

It's interesting that the sculpts of the subsequent Marx Weird-Ohs figures were far superior to the sculpts of the actual Hawk models. It's ironic but the Marx figures are much more faithful reproductions of the box art of the Hawk kits than are the Hawk models.

I wonder about that myself. I heard they were After-Marx probably from Mexico but I'm not sure. :-\
That is a good question.....I looked the minis over very closely to see the quality of the down-size. They are very true to their larger brothers. I'll search around and see what I can find out....
I did learn something about Nutty Mads I had wondered about for years. In this pic you can see the Series 3 Nutty Mads in the back of the top shelf:
Five of the six are green ("Heritage" slightly translucent plastic) but the Gutterball Annie is tan (flat colored plastic). I always wondered if that figure was original or a repop. The eBay seller didn't know (of course), and the base bottom gives info correct to the other Series 3 Nutties. I saw some of these listed on eBay a few months back and they were stated to be from the Plasti-Marx factory in Mexico circa 1970s. Plasti-Marx was a subsidiary of Marx and did fairly good work, not like the slipshod operations in Mexico now that knock out those repops with little or no quality control. The lime-green flat plastic Marx Uni-Mons that turn up from time to time were made by Plasti-Marx in the '70s. I guess technically the Plasti-Marx product could be considered repops but they are of good quality and were made in the 1970s just a decade after original Marx figures. Plasti-Marx figures seem to command at or close to the prices of original Marx figures on eBay, though I doubt most people have any idea they are Plasti-Marx or even what Plasti-Marx was. I never could find out for sure but I believe Plasti-Marx went out of business sometime in the late '70s or maybe into the '80s. That's probably the reason those molds got swapped around down there over the years.
Here's a section of the Wiki listing for Marx:
"In 1972, Marx sold his company to the Quaker Oats Company for $54 million ($246 million in 2005 dollars) and retired at the age 76 (Smith 2000, pp. 9–10). Quaker also owned the Fisher-Price brand, but struggled with Marx. Quaker had hoped Marx and Fisher-Price would have synergy, but the companies' sales patterns were too different. Marx was also faulted for largely ignoring the trend towards electronic toys in the early 1970s. In late 1975, Quaker closed the plants in Erie and Girard, and in early 1976, Quaker sold its struggling Marx division to the British conglomerate Dunbee-Combex-Marx, who had bought the former Marx UK subsidiary in 1967."
From what I've been able to gather Plasti-Marx was the Marx subsidiary in Mexico up until Marx sold out to Quaker Oats in 1972. At that time Plasti-Marx became it's own company. Plasti-Marx quality wasn't as high as original Marx quality, but it was better than the Mexican repops cranked out since.
Sure would be nice if someone with some real knowledge of this stuff stepped up and filled in the blanks. Most of what I know is based on bits and pieces of things I've read over the years mostly online (a large part of which came from some detective work involving eBay listings). A lot of it is guesswork and supposition.
I wonder if the sixties vintage Popsicle blue Marx figures that very occasionally surface might have been production from a Plasti-Marx plant?

I can't say for sure, but I would wager those "Popsicle" blues are just original Marx UniMons that were made when Marx changed plastic types on some of their figures in 1964 (possibly late 1963). Most of the orange ones from 1964 are of the slightly translucent "Popsicle" variety ("Heritage" plastic as some collectors refer to it), but there are a few scarce orange ones in the older flat lead-based plastic that most of the teal blue ones came in. Some collectors call the flat orange ones "Pumpkin" orange.
To sum up, there was a plastic change and a color change in late '63/'64. Most of the teal blues were made in the lead-based flat color plastic and most of the oranges were made in the newer "Popsicle" slightly translucent plastic, with a few blues in the "Popsicle" plastic and a few oranges in the older flat plastic.
Again, much of this is guesswork on my part, but it seems to be the most logical explanation.

I didn't have any Skrewy Skwerts as a kid. I had some Nutty Mads, though. I've had these two a couple of years. I got them both at the same flea market from two different sellers on two different days a few months apart. Which is pretty unusual because they're so hard to find. I got them for a great price. I've seen a couple of them on E-bay over the past few years, but they were over a hundred dollars each. If they were molded from a specific Nutty Mad I'm not sure which one it was.

Here are some good pics I lifted from the net of the Nutty Mads Target Game released by Marx in 1964(?):

J. Lloyd International employed original Marx Nutty Mad molds to issue six boxed "Hawk Weird-Ohs Vinyl Figure & Paint Sets":

Did anyone pick up any of these sets?

In that box pic Rocko The Champ is missing his finger protruding through the raised boxing glove. ???
Maybe in the current PC climate they thought someone might choose to be offended by that. Speaks to the overly sensitive wimpy attitudes that are so prevalent today. ::)
Horrorhunter: Rocko's offending finger was removed back in the '60s. I have specimens with and without it (and not just broken ones).
Show us the pics!

First I've heard of that. I've owned, and seen, many Rockos in my life and all of the original ones from the '60s had the finger except the ones where the finger was broken off (which is common). Can you substantiate this with pics of an original Rocko showing where the finger is missing and molded that way, or a link to this claim by others.
These aren't Nutty Mads but I suspect they were inspired by Marx Nutty Mads.

This pic shows the complete set of 8 figures. They came out in 1964 in different colors and are 5" tall. This eBay listing mentions they were recast in green and red in the '90s so I guess the pic above is of the green repops.

Four human-type figures and four alien figures. These things are scarce, even more so than the MPC Daffy Daddy-Ohs.
I wanted to post these and decided to resurrect this old Nutty Mads thread to post them because they are similar to Nutty Mads.
Here's an old video of my Nutty Mads and similar figures.
Here's a pic of the rare Marx Nutty Mad Generals.

They came unpainted as well. They would probably be considered politically incorrect these days (as so much is). These are rare and expensive these days.

And terribly fragile.
