They only played the role once, but which actor did it best?

Good choice -- SECRET SERVICE is a great Bond film.   8)

This is an excellent question. I chose Val Kilmer as Simon Templar.
I liked this film and thought he was quite good in this role. It's become somewhat lost because of all the other similar films that have come out since.
Kilmer was quite good in most of his early films and, with the exception of some Indie work, hasn't done a whole lot lately- which is a shame because in my very humble opinion he has a lot of talent.

I would have to add an "Honorable Mention" to Sean Connery, Eric Bana & Billy Zane as Quartermain, Bruce Banner & The Phantom respectively.
Could probably throw Robin Williams into this mix as well.

The Phantom (Zane) was pretty good but it's another film that has been somewhat "buried" because of the flux of Super Hero flicks over the years. It's worth the two hours if you should come across it.

Ben Affleck & George Clooney are both (IMO) extremely over- rated.

Stallone, aside from 2- 3 of his very early films, just can't be taken seriously any more.
He did make a film with Robert DeNiro, Harvey Keitel & Ray Liotta called Copland around 15 years ago which was excellent.

The Lone Ranger and the "goody- two shoes hero" thing just never did anything for me.

Brandon Routh wasn't a bad Superman but the film itself was quite average. The problem that I had watching it was that he never came across as "Superman" in the movie. The same thing with Kilmer playing Batman- he was just miscast and didn't fit the role.

Lazenby had some pretty big shoes to fill replacing Connery as Bond. He didn't quite do it, but he did leave us with one of the very best Bond films. The same can't be said for Clooney.

We'll he was better as Bond then Connery in "Never say never Again."

I'd have to agree with that and maybe even "Diamonds Are Forever".

I haven't seen all the films, but of the ones I did I chose Sean Connery.  It was a hard choice.  Kyle McLaughlin in Dune, Edward Norton in the Hulk, Billy Zane in the Phantom and Alec Baldwin in The Shadow I also liked a like.

Maclachlin actually was good in Dune, I had to think a little bit about this film...
