This was taken Friday night at the opening of Mort Kunstler's "Remembering the Battle of Gettysburg" exhibit at the Reading (PA) Public Museum.
He was kind enough to sign my copy of the JAWS parody cover he did for MAD, and pose with me holding the cover I did for MAD. The show runs through July 28.

I love Mad Magazine, have several isues in the attic, and 3 or 4 paperbacks in our bookcase. Mort drucker was my favorite artist. If it didn't have a Drucker entry in there somewhere, I wouldn't get it.

My fave has to be the "Planet That Went Ape" parodies of the first 4 films.

Kelly Freas was a multi-talented addition to William Gaine's stable! I always marvel at his painterly approach - and he was able to mimic different styles in his paintings, the better to "sell" the parody.

All great stuff! I have the book "MAD Cover to Cover" so it's a special treat to see the back covers with the parody ads. I never knew that they did the parody ads so consistently back then. By the time I started reading MAD regularly in the 60s and 70s the back cover could be a parody, straight humor strip, or even social commentary.

My favorite MAD covers are the ones done by Kelly Freas. But I think that my favorite Freas MAD cover wasn't for the magazine, it is the one he did for the paperback "Son of MAD". I teach a history of illustration class, and Kunstler is one of the many artists I spend some time on...

Nice pics, Hepcat. I still have a number of those issues (originally purchased by my older brother).
Kelly Freas did some amazing work for Mad.

And of course those early Jack Davis covers are fantastic.

I also fondly remember the early John Severin covers for Cracked (the one with the giant mouth, and the one with a gigantic egg cracking and spilling its contents onto an urban scene). Something about the Bosch-like complexity of those images...
