OK, so nothing is really free. But I thought it would be fun to try to collect together examples of all the monster collectibles that were given away with other products - at no additional charge.
Some are actual monster toys, like kids' meals premiums. Some are containers, like collectors' cups, etc.
I'll post a few to get us started.

My, my. The MPC monsters are very cool. I've always wanted a set.

I've always hated that about small toys. The manufacturers don't give a damn about scale. They just figure cost and profit margin based on how much plastic they have to use in each item. So they will make Tweety & Sylvester toys from the same assortment the same size, etc.
Nice pictures - Thanks!!!
(That other Jack-In-the-Box set, with Phantom on a boat and the small Dracula in a coffin, was from 2002.)

It's both ironic and annoying that the two items I like the best from your list are from two of my favourite U.S. fast food chains, neither of which has any outlets in Canada.
:(
Headquartered in Chile, a fast food chain called Lomito'n is famous for their pork sandwiches:
As if that weren't enough to delight any monsterkid, they also gave us these very cool monster toys:
These very stylized 5" figures are glow-in-the-dark and were each issued in both opaque and slightly translucent soft white plastic. They are quite rare.
Most of the examples of these toys were sold on eBay by a seller out of Argentina who said these were given out in that country in 1999.
I think I'd like to try one of those sandwiches - but easy on the mayo, please.

These are beautiful. It's too bad we don't see more cool premiums like this. The state of the world economy seems to have put the squeeze on monstery goodness. I long for "back in the day" when cool toy giveaways were commonplace. Some of our most treasured items were freebies: Anchor Hocking glasses, Soaky containers (you paid for the soap), MPC Weirds in Fritos, mega stuff in cereal, Sinclair dino stuff (I loved going to Sinclair, the parents got the gas and I got the dinosaurs!), and so much more. Monster gold now.....free back then.

I didn't get my AH glasses back then, but from what I hear back in the early sixties ('62 or '63) you could get one of the glasses free with a fillup of gas. I guess they were probably for sale at the same gas stations for a pittance. This is only hearsay mind you. Maybe someone else can shed further light on this. I was born in '59 so I was too young to know about the glasses back then, not that they would have survived unscathed all those years. I shelled out for my set last year like most of us had to. I wonder if any of our members have original AH monster glasses from the '60s.
Concerning the '80s glasses I heard they were sold at Universal Studios and theme park. I don't own them and I don't really know.

These are phenomenal. I did not know that Tombstone partnered with Universal in 1999. This is fantastic. I'd imagine there was one more, for the all meat pizza. There are usually three designs released annually. I have only recently started collecting them. Perhaps, one day, I will be able to snag these.
I did a search around the Internet and saw quite a few places that described these Anchor-Hocking glasses as "reportedly" being gas station give-a-ways from "about" 1963. They all sounded very tentative about swearing to that information.
But... nowhere did I find anyone disputing the attribution, so:

Until someone contradicts the common assumption that these were freebies, let's list them here.
Does anyone have any personal experience with obtaining these that far back? If so, tell us if they were from your local gas station - and what oil company was behind the promotion.
It would be great so see a poster or other promotional material from this set.
These items are from a 1992 Pepsi/Pizza Hut promotion that I have listed as being from Canada. Does anyone remember seeing these cups in the U.S.?

Somewhere, perhaps even on the old yahoo message board, the name of the sculptor of this line has come up. If I remember correctly he did them for an American chain which then never releaed them, and he was surprised to find that they had been made in Chile. Anyone know/remember/find that?
I also can't find photos of the European Burger King releases. They had one or two happy meal style boxes, masks for each character, the packaging insert sheets have art work of all four monsters, and a cardbord scene (with sunken Rita) is included with the Creature.

I hope someone can locate that conversation.
The restaurant chain started in Chile and expanded into Argentina.
As far as I aware, all of the known examples that were sold on eBay originated in Argentina. When I questioned the seller, he told me that they had been premiums from a Lomito'n in Argentina. He could have been making the whole thing up.
These could have been prototypes or illegal copies. That would explain why so few have been seen and the fact that they were produced using two different plastics.
I love a mystery.

By-the-way, this is just one cup seen from different sides. Notice that Dracula is in the center and his outstretched arms are positioned in front of the monsters on either side of him.
For Halloween, sometimes Pepsi would supply monster-decorated bags to participating retail outlets. You could use them to carry home your purchases and re-use them to go trick-or-treating.

This little glass is something of a curiosity.
It was issued in 2010 in to commemorate the "Wolfman" re-make, but it features an image of the original "Wolf Man" from 1941. It was evidently available only at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin, Texas.
Since it had such a limited market, I assume it was given away for a premier of the re-make and not sold by the Cinema or anyone else.
They do not show up on eBay very often.

I ignore all but the Frankentyke character. When you pull his arms down he sticks his tongue out about down to his belt buckle. (Igor: "He's going to be very popular.")
These were regional give-a-ways, not available to the whole country. Frankentyke can be found in two slightly different paint schemes.

In the 1990's they gave away these monster "Spooky Spoons" featuring Dracula, Frankenstein and the Cyclops. The spoons would change colors when exposed to warm and cold.

Since the Bates house is shown, it must have been a tie-in with the Halloween activities at Universal that year.
Very pretty! Does it glow in the dark?
It doesn't glow in the dark, but I spend so much time looking at the front, I really don't look that much at the back. I probably got mine at Weinersnitzel. And, yes, it did indeed involve Universal Hollywood at Halloween.

General Cinema gave these super buckets away with their popcorn. Not just a give-a-way, these were also meant to be a throw-a-way. I wonder how many made the trip to a dumpster after each showing.
Does anyone know exactly what year these were made and for what occasion? They must have been produced for some special event. Lily Company (the paper cup folks) made these - but I did not see any Universal licensing in any of the pictures I have encountered.

General Cinema (with Pepsi) also gave us this very pretty 32 oz. glow-in-the-dark cup.
I have the same questions about this cup. When was it made and for what occasion? It doesn't look like the Frankenstein image used in other Pepsi Halloween promotions - although the background is a little like what was used on some Pepsi 12-pack carton cut-out panels.
The is one cup seen from three angles (sorry about the tilting pictures - I must have been tipsy when I took them):

???
That's correct -the Frankenstein is the James Bama Aurora Gigantic Frankenstein kit painting and the Creature and
Phantom are both by Basil Gogos previously used on Famous Monsters. I don't know who painted the Wolfman but
it wasn't Gogos or Bama.

This 16 oz. monsters cup was issued by Pepsi with Ponderosa Restaurant. Manufactured by Louisiana Plastics, Inc. - St. Louis, MO, it glows in the dark and features 6 VERY stylized monsters.
From stage right to left, There are the Invisible Man, Creature, Bride, Frankenstein, Wolf man and the Mummy. (Mummy looks a little greyer in person.)
Sad note: Even when the monsters were so wildly stylized, they STILL did not include Dracula.
The triangular design above the Invisible One's shoulder is a logo combining the one with Universal monsters in front of a circle and the one for Universal Studios Hollywood & Florida.
Anyone know what Ponderosa Restaurant is represented here and where?
What year these were made?
They did have a Dracula in this style. He just did not appear on the cup.

That about sums it up. It was the one time I was truly disappointed seeing the Universal Monsters on something.
Well, if you didn't like that one, you won't like this one either.
This 32 oz. cup uses the same Universal styleguide images as the 16 oz. Ponderosa cup. But this one features only Frankenstein and his Bride. You can see more clearly that the yellow around Frank's electrodes is supposed to be sparks. Bride is holding clamps to his connectors.
This is another example of a cup that must have had very limited distribution. It was produced by Pepsi with "Mr. Hero", a sub sandwich shop with quite a few outlets, but only in Ohio.
Unlike the Ponderosa cup, this one does NOT glow in the dark.

I am not certain of the exact year, unfortunately, but it is mid-90s. I do know, however, that this same art was used on the Pepsi boxes and could have also been on cups/plastics distributed at Pepsi-owned and Pepsi-serving chains.
Here is glow-in-the-dark 32 oz. cup that features a variation on that "art"work:

Oddly, this cup has no markings at all - none.

Good point. Shows how awful the original is when the knockoff is clearly better. I don't think I've ever seen a monster item which is as unattractive as those Ponderosa cups. Is it just me, or does everyone think they suck?

I don't think I am cheating by including these three Sideshow busts as premiums. For me a "premium" is something that adds extra value to a purchase without adding extra cost.
These Dracula, Frankenstein and The Wolf Man busts were very nicely done. More importantly, the Dracula bust gave us a much welcomed Bela Lugosi collectible.
Although they were included in the Monster Legacy Collection Gift Set, they did not come at any added price. The three Monster Legacy Collections DVDs in the gift set with the three Sideshow busts were selling at Target Stores for
less than the combined price of the three Legacy Collection DVDs alone priced individually.
The price I paid for my "Gift Set" was just $35.00. That wasn't a remainder price for DVDs that had been out for a long time. That was the price the first week they were released as a set. Imagine that. Thirty-five bucks for six discs containing 14 movies, many with commentaries. Unlike some others, I never had any problems with my discs. I'd rather have today's much improved picture and sound quality. But at the time, this was a helluva deal.
By-the-way, Amazon is now listing this gift set for $139.00.

Although these give-a-ways were not handed out to the general public, they were distributed by Sideshow free of charge.
In 1999, Sideshow gave out a Limited Edition of 200 sets of Holiday Little Big Heads to favored retailers/distributors. The standard Frankenstein, Mummy, Wolf man and Dracula were painted in Christmas colors and packaged in a vacuum molded plastic holder inside a plain, gold box.

Note that all the metal items are painted gold and the figures are sprinkled with glitter to simulate snow. (Gotta love that Mummy is wrapped like a candy cane.)
In 2000, Sideshow gave out a Limited Edition of 350 12-inch Frankenstein dolls to retailers/distributors. The doll was dressed in a red nightshirt and given an Ebenezer Scrooge styled nightcap. The box and accessories were identical to the regular 12-inch Frankenstein edition.

In 2001, Sideshow gave out a Limited Edition of 400 12-inch Dracula dolls to the retailers/distributors. Dracula was dressed in pajamas with feet and has his cape. His PJ's have a trap door in the back. The box and accessories were identical to the regular 12-inch Dracula edition. In addition, Sideshow provided a cardboard sleeve printed with a big, red bow and gift card that reads 'Happy Holidays", "To..." and "From Sideshow Toys."

Luckily for us, many toy retailers are not also collectors (or they collect something other than monster toys), so the 12-inch Christmas Frankenstein and Dracula dolls show up on eBay quite often. The Little Big Heads are listed less often, but don't seem to be much in demand. They can usually be bought fairly reasonably.
NOTE:
I used what I thought were the most reliable edition numbers on these. Many eBay sellers claim some issues were limited to 100. Some sources state that small numbers were available for retail - with the lion's share given to retailers/distributors.
Wish I could get hard numbers directly from Sideshow.
I loved all these, even the pepsi premiums. Bad Monsters are like Bad Pizza. No such exists.

Not all free monsters are strictly Classic Universal Monsters.
These 2001 Burger King Halloween toys feature the Simpsons portraying monsters and such. There were 15 toys and each lit up and performed some physical stunt - like a tombstone that would spin around to reveal a different inscription, etc.

Or any of Universal's promotions in the past ten years! The Monsters have virtually disappeared. IMO, we need Universal to use the Pepsi machine to do some cross-promotion with the films or Halloween Horror Nights. Bring back the classics, I say, and do it in a big way! The Monsters never really went "out of style" with the general public until Universal stopped promoting them after 1999. Let's bring them back, shall we? Oh yes... with a new style guide. Thanks.

Party Monsters were only around for one year. For the most part, Pepsi has done great things with our fiendish friends. And obscurity is not a good thing when it comes to getting more toys... ;)

Well... Two years. Plus one year of the very highly stylized monsters.
But I think we owe Pepsi a lot for keeping the monsters out front year after year for so long. It's a hell of a lot more than Universal has been willing to do - even at Halloween.
Now if Universal would help by approving actor specific images and no more of the generic garbage that they have been pushing on the public.

Hostess does chocolate cupcakes with orange icing every Halloween. One Halloween they put out this interesting cupcake pack.

Note that these were not issued contemporary with the show. The latest legible date is 1992 - nearly 30 years after the show aired. Could these have been issued when the DVD's came out?
No. These were from the 1990s. If you recall, that was a time when classic programming was still valued by a number of Americans. Nick at Nite was at its height. All of the classic stars were coming back to TV in new programs... Good times.
Here is another cut-out mask. This was included as a centerfold in Archie's Madhouse #14.
The comic cover:

Do the Minions from "Despicable me" count as monsters? Has anybody noticed the plastic minions figures in cerials like "Honeynut Cheerios"? Reminds me of the good old days, when more cerials included toys in the box.

The brochure's pitch is strongly inspired by the narration of Disney's Haunted Mansion (1969). I'm thinking early 1970s for this brochure... or earlier and a whole bunch of coincidental similarities. >:D

The link didn't work, HH, but I looked it up myself. Sure enough the website says opening 2013, but there are online reviews of the place going back to 2005... so the attraction has obviously been there a lot longer. If it is a recent attraction, somebody must have really been dedicated to the 1960s to pull that brochure off! The website looks nothing at all like the brochure.
ADD:
In fact, one review from 2006 said it opened over 30 years ago, which puts it in the 1970s.
This was the link I meant to post.
http://www.frankensteinwaxmuseum.com/ (http://www.frankensteinwaxmuseum.com/) -New york Here's the one in Canada
http://houseoffrankenstein.ca/ (http://houseoffrankenstein.ca/)
Your brochure has both of them run by the same company, but these two links differ enough, which makes me suspect that they are now run independantly of each other. I have no idea of how old your brochure is, but it certainly isn't for the present day business of that name. You might want to contact them out of curiosity, to see if maybe they know about when they may have issued that brochure.
It could be HH, as the one in Lake George (which probably was renovated and then re-opened in April), has multiple reviews by people talking about how they visited the place as children in the 1970s. Maybe they sold one off, or the original owners sold both. But it is still probably the same attraction -- especially given the reviews that indicate how "old" and "not scary" the place is, having "not been touched since the 1970s." Personally, that's a positive review in my book, though they never intended it that way.

I have that same brochure with the Frankenstein mask on it. I got it when I went there in the early '70's.
I don't know how many years they printed them, but it's at least early '70's. I see them on e-bay from time to time. I also got another brochure when I went there that I almost never see around, it has black and white photo's inside of some of the exhibits and descriptions of all of them.

There are no dotted lines showing where to cut out the eyes, but there are holes indicating where to attach the strap that would hold it on a kid's face.
I may have this yellow brochure saved away somewhere, but it is not right at hand - and I do not have an image of the other side.
Note that the yellow brochure mentions "Clifton Hill" from the Canadian address on the purple brochure, but does not mention Lake George from the U.S. address. Were there two "Houses" located in separate locations, or one "House" that had two addresses?
Did this place physically straddle the border and have separate entrances for both countries?
I've always wondered about this attraction, but never known anyone who actually visited it.

Big Foot
Cave Thing, The
Dragon
Giant Squid
Golem
Headless Horseman
Hydra
Loch Ness
Minotaur
Monster of the Moors
Mummy
Roc
Swamp Creature
Troll
Vampire
Werewolf
Yeti
Zombie
Eighteen is an odd number. I suspect there were others. Anyone out there have a definitive list?

Interesting that there is no "Man-Made Monster" AKA Frankenstein. I guess the folks at 7-11 didn't believe he was mythical.
Glad we could work together to make a list! I noticed Frankenstein's absence, too. Maybe they considered him a Golem?

Only if the Golem had been brought to life by a Rabbi named Frank N. Stein. Maybe the problem was that the Frankenstein Monster they wanted to use, would have got them in trouble with Universal. Their Golem actually looks to me a lot more like Karloff's mummy.

That's why they would use a generic name like "Man-Made Monster" - Like they did with Werewolf, Vampire and Mummy.
Just seems funny that they would include the other three and not find a way to use Frankie, too.
And where is the Swamp Creature (CFBL)?

I have seen the term golem used broadly enough to include the Frankenstein's Monster (a "flesh golem"), but I consider that a stretch. I wasn't sure what they wrote in the description on the back, and wondered if they also made the same leap.
This is an interesting adult-sized mask that was given away by Grolsch Beer in what must have been the 1980's.
Grolsch makes those big brown beer bottles with a ceramic cap seated on a rubber gasket and held in place by a wire clamp. The name Grolsch is fired right into the glazed white cap.
This silly mask has "Grolschenstein" wearing a Grolsch cap on his head. The wire clamp is hinged at Frank's electrodes locations. The mask is made of that VERY thin white plastic (vacuum formed?) that has been used on kids' masks in the past. It is 11¾" tall.
I can't image anyone ever wearing one of these things, but there must be a few out there hanging on beer memorabilia collectors' walls.
Wow, Grolsch has always been my favorite beer (even more so now).
I'm surprised that no one has brought up these. The first is a mini-CD that came with the re-release of the Creature from the Black Lagoon movies on VHS. The CD contains clips from all three Creature movies, access to an on-line "Hunt for the Creature" game, and a cheaply produced featurette; a lame Predator rip-off, with a POV camera showing how the Creature decapitated and dismembered a squad of commandos. Obviously, this was an attempt to justify as to why fans would want to shoot their favorite amphibian in the first place. A question to anyone who might have seen this featurette: am I the only one who thought this terrain was WAY too dry for the Creature to haunt?

The next freebie was a Halloween giveaway from Papa John's from a number of years back. It's a DVD with Abbott & Costello meet the Mummy as well as a bonus episode of the Munsters. Sure, it's a no frills disc without chapters or trailers, but any time you have Universal Monsters, Abbott & Costello and PIZZA all in the same promotion, plus it's FREE, how can you possibly go wrong?

The next two items were not really promotional giveaways, but rather Universal Monster advertising displays that I acquired. The first comes from the original Universal Studios Monsters Classic Collection. It is the top part of the larger standee used to display the VHS tapes, with an artwork montage of some of the tapes in the series.

This final example shows the advertising artwork for the Universal Monster cookies from Nabisco. This is actually a translucent display that would be mounted at the top of the checkout lanes at a supermarket, in front of a light box. I'm guessing they cropped Frankenstein this way so they could portray him realistically, without having to deal without having to deal with any of the actor's heirs.

Thanks for sharing them.
Welcome new UMA member. Way to contribute.
This Frankenstein slide puzzle is 2½" X 2½" and was given away by B. Moss Clothing Company stores to advertise a one day pre-Halloween sale. Since Halloween occurred on Thursday that year, that means the sale was in 1974, 1985, 1991 or 2002. I'm guessing it was 1991.
The maker's initials are OTC. I believe this was made by Oriental Trading Company.

Great examples. By the way, Sara Karloff sold Universal the rights to the Karloff Monster years ago, so Universal would have not had any issues with demands from heirs.

But, I am fairly certain, he can't be used in advertising like this.

Sara Karloff maintains that she owns full rights to her father's likeness -- in spite of the deal. So, yes, Universal can license almost anything they want with Karloff's image, but I think she drew the line at advertising (other than the use of the logo). Otherwise, we would be seeing Karloff in the style guide, Karloff in the Pepsi cut-outs, etc. There's a reason she can still claim ownership after the deal. Universal can license it to manufacturers, but they probably don't have free rein to use it however they please.

Arby's restaurants Gave out this nice-looking King Kong cup to celebrate the Konfrontation ride at Universal Studios, Florida. I have this listed as 1976, but since I do not have the item in hand, I wonder if the ride really opened the same time as the movie?

That looks like an admission that the Willis O'Brien film was superior to Dino's. :P
With the release of Godzilla in 1998, came a lot of items in toy stores.
Taco Bell got in the mood with these toys:

The following White Castle Godzilla toys came out in 1990.
Since the figures look like the original Godzilla, I think they might have come out with a video/DVD release.
The 4 toys are: Godzilla Water Squirter, Spinner, Inflatable Godzilla & Flyer

Rugrats is actually from 20 years back. So, it's all good.
But now my posts make it look like I don't know what I'm talking about, calling the White Castle Godzilla a Reptar! LOL
What ARE you talking about?
No, I didn't change any more posts. (Heh, heh.)
I'm retired. I stopped having interest in "modern" kids' programming a lot longer ago than 20 years.
And thanks for catching my blunder before it got to old to change!

Well, 20 years ago was about the time they ceased being good. There were still a few here and there, but they generally all went out in the early '90s, except for Are You Afraid of the Dark? That was excellent.

;)
I'm sure a Godzilla lighter exists somewhere. And if it doesn't it definitely should.
These paper masks were issued by Budweiser in 1994 for what they were calling a "Halloween Shreek-end". (Halloween was on Monday that year.)
The two pieces in the foreground are little paper tents that would be stood up on table tops.

Here's a favorite of mine. I can't remeber what product this promoted, but the winner got to meat Elvira, and spend the night at the Bates Motel. Two of my favorite horrors on one cup.
That cup was from 1989.
Here is a variation on the design that is dated 1990. Looks like Pepsi/Universal did the promotion for at least 2 years. (This cup is glow-in-the-dark.)

I had heard about the place existing before. When I looked up the address in Google Maps, I found that it is no longer in business. It has either become "McGinty's" or is a vacant storefront.

This is not a monster freebie. It is just an addition to the post about the Pizza Hut 1992 Halloween promotion that produced the monster cups with high relief caps and trading cards.

These 1989 Coors Brewing Co. cardboard "Monster Mugs" standees were designed to be displayed on table tops. Flat, they are about 7.5" x 5 ". Set up for standing on the table, they would be about 6" x 4" x 3". The backs promoted "Coors", "Coors Light" and "Coors Extra Gold Draft" beers.
Flattened and held up by the "handle" on the right, they make simple, hand-held masks.

Over the years McDonalds has given out lots of generic Halloween trick-or-treating buckets like these. I guess the size is OK for tots going out on their first couple of years.
They sure would have been inadequate when
I was of trick-or-treating age.
It would be useful for keeping crayons and little loose toys off the floor.

This isn't a generic werewolf. this is the Coors Beerwolf! He used to be in his own ads in the 80's. They used to have giant statues of him in stores that talked when you pushed a button on the display. They had one set up in the Beer section of the Kroger's I used to go to as a kid. This was created for retailers in companion with the Applause monster plush circa 2002. It should have also had the Applause logo in a circle above Dracula's shoulder. It may have been cut off, or this could be an alternative version. Either way, it's definitely from the early 2000s. There is a seller on eBay stating it is from 1999, but that is inaccurate. Pepsi Monsters generally have Pepsi products featured prominently in the artwork itself.

Curiously the ebay one is a mirror image of Ravenloft's at least the figures are. The words still read correctly in both.

*edit I guess it is not that curious the listing says double sided.
I went and peeked under the edge and yes it is double sided. If there is a logo on the other side then that may have influenced which side I hung up in the first place. this side has no markings or wording other than universal monsters.
Interesting I see no evidence that anything was cut off from the edge at all. Possibly could be an alternate version or a very careful cut job. you guys are gonna make me take it off the wall and inspect it aren't you? Sheesh. At least I know what it is from now. Many thanks!
Let's see if we can get this thread back on monster-themed freebies.
This sweet little kid's meal trick-or-treat bucket was given out by Hardee's Restaurant for Halloween in 1993.
The belly of the bucket is 6½" wide x 6½" tall. The upright bail stands another 3½', bringing the overall height to 10". The bucket is made of milky-white, glow-in-the-dark plastic. It was made by Berry Plastics of Evansville, Indiana.
Here are all sides of the bucket:

I know this may be too cartoony for some of you, but I think the Frankenstein (with electrodes in the proper place) and handsome little Dracula qualify it for inclusion.
Hardee's gave out other versions of these glow-in-the-dark buckets in the 90's. But I do not own any of those, and the auction pictures I have found so far aren't very good.
Those are awesome buckets! Nobody makes anything cool like that anymore. McD's had Angry Birds on their buckets (and Monster High). Angry Birds... Really...
That bucket is no cornier than the monster cerials, and I have some of that in my collection.
I love the bucket, especially that is GITD, but I just HATE the safety rules. We never had safety rules in the 60s and 70s. We lived on the EDGE!! :D
There is something creepy, about a vampire who feasts on the living, giving safety instructions to those he might feast upon.

Blasphemy! Those dumb safety rules (that became a huge joke as soon as they were thought up -
- in the '70s!) are just as much "Halloween" as carving pumpkins. Unfortunately, safety rules aren't touted much anymore and have become part of the nostalgia of a bygone Halloween era. They've gone by the wayside since everyone is going to those dumb Trunk or Treat things.
Halloween Safety Educational Film Part 1 (1977, Centron) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2ttGzA_ujc#)
I was a trick-or-treater in the 1950's. (I will pause while you all say, "o-o-o-o-h".) We were given basic safety rules back then.
Don't wear a mask that obstructs your vision.
Don't wear a costume that hangs down where you are likely to trip over it.
Take extra care crossing streets if you are wearing black.
Of course, back then we often got Saran Wrapped, homemade cookies, popcorn balls, Rice Krispies balls, candied apples, etc. They were considered the better treats. Too many people gave away penny candy - they still had penny candies back then - like root beer barrels.
Not that many people seemed concerned with the urban legends about needles in apples, etc. They were even less likely to have happened than the flaming bag of poop. You always heard stories from someone who had a cousin who knew a guy that these stories happened to - you never met them or had it happen to you.
And the only reason to start before it was completely dark was because you wanted to maximize trick-or-treating time before porch lights began winking out to announced the end of another Halloween.
Hey, lookee!

I've never seen this one before.

Damn straight! I used to go trick or treating with a real sliced-off human face for a mask (usually an annoying neighbor kid's). None of that pansy-ass latex or vacu-form for me.

This is the only one I have ever seen. They are considerably more rare than the 12 packs.

Just got a couple of these cup holders, and it is amazing how nice they are -- big, heavy, sturdy, well-sculpted and colored -- one of the best-produced premiums ever (unlike the namesake film, Ferris Bueller Meets Godzilla).
I got this when it first came out. I remember, as I was visiting Universal Studios in Orlando. I have no idea where it went... But, it's nice to see it again... if only in pictures.
Still trying.

Here is an interesting freebie. This Frankenstein mask is part of an event folder that was produced for movie theatres wanting to hold Halloween midnight shows - OCTOBER 31st, 1959!
These would have gone to theatre chains and independent theater owners over 50 years ago.
The Hammer Frankenstein mask is just one item in this cool promotional packet. Unfortunately the eBay auction pictures were all out of focus to one degree or another. I include all four pictures since some of the information can still be read.
I would have liked to buy this folder and run clear copies to share here, but the seller listed it with a Buy-It-Now price of $99.00 and it is a little generic to fit in my collection.
Maybe if it had contained numerous illustrations of the classic Universal Frankenstein and posters....

That Wendy's logo debuted in 1983, so it is not before that year.
The Pepsi logo lacks the rounded "E" that debuted in 1987, but both the round "E" and the regular "E" were used through 1991.
That being said, I'd think this cup would have the rounded "E" if it were after 1987, so my guess would be between 1983 and 1987.

I was told they were from a 1986 promotion, and that the cups were for sale at Wendys. There's a Hunchback (also based on the half sheet) in the series as well. I've seen some cups with a Coke-a-Cola sticker over the Pepsi logo, probably for franchises that had Coke, not Pepsi. I've never seen any promo material from this campaign, and it didn't run in the Atlanta area, as I would have flipped for 'em as a kid and was a Wendy's regular. Still one of my favorite series of cups, using the movie posters is a very unusual move.

Looking for some help. The button with the slogan "Ask me about the monster deal"
is that a Universal Studios employee button to advertise Halloween Horror Nights or is it not for Halloween Horror Nights? If it was not for Halloween Horror Nights, then who wore it and what was it used to advertise? The members of the Halloween Horror Nights community are claiming that it was for Halloween Horror Nights, but the post by "Monsters For Sale" talking about the 1992 Monster Bash promotion makes me think that it may not have been for Halloween Horror Nights. I am looking for the story behind the button and preferably I would like a definitive source proving whether it was for Halloween Horror Nights or not.
Thank you in advance for the help!!!

WE BID YOU WELCOME, NEW MEMBER!
The "Monster Deal" slogan was used by Pizza Hut in this promotion for their advertising campaign that was tied in to Halloween Horror Nights with the Florida Universal Studios and Central Florida Ticket Master. The eBay auction that listed this insert listed it as being from 1992. But the Frankenstein in their ad does not wear a party hat - unlike the button.

We have dated examples of BOTH style monsters from 1992.
Previously in this thread, you will find other examples of Pizza Hut, Canada promotional monster cups and pizza boxes that match the ad art. They are
dated 1992.
Their are also Pizza Hut trading cards that use the other style monsters, that are
dated 1992.
Looks like these were worn by Pizza Hut employees. (I don't swear to anything.)
Does anyone know if Pizza Hut had a store inside the park that year? If so, the buttons might have been spotted on employees outside AND inside the park... Just a thought.
This is spillover from the Monster Trading Cards thread. These Universal Monsters Hologram Cards were given away by Pizza Hut in 1992 with meals.

would correspond with the Halloween horror nights button in this image that Universal employees wore in 1992.
I guess I am still confused by the button with the party hat. The theme doesn't match the Pizza Hut ad or box but it does match the Pepsi boxes. And the button says Pepsi but not Pizza Hut.
Is there any way of learning if the buttons were worn by Pizza Hut employees, or by Universal Studios employees, or by someone else?
And also is there any way of learning if it was an ad for Halloween Horror Nights or something else?

Maybe Pepsi had another tie-in with ticket sales through supermarket sales of cases - or through convenience stores like 7-11 with soda fountain sales.
Hard to know 22 years later without information form a store employee who was issued one.
Anybody...?
Here is frankenstein's monster wearing the party hat again. With Pepsi, Doritos, and WaWa and the statement "You could win a trip to see the Universal Monsters! At Universal Studios". So I have to assume that is referring to Halloween Horror Nights. So I am now feeling more and more convinced that the button was referring to Halloween Horror Nights. What I would still love to find out is who was given/wore these buttons (Universal Studios employees, Pizza Hut employees, WaWa employees, or somebody else). But as you said that may be hard to determine :-(

I wish I'd gone to Pizza Hut then. I would love that box.
Now that we are back to the Pizza Hut premiums of the early 1990's; that restaurant had a Universal Monster's placemat with the 6-headed logo on one side and monster games and puzzles on the back. Did anyone save this piece and, if so, could they post a picture of both sides (preferably in high-resolution). Thanks.
The Universal Monster stock art from 1991 lasted through 1996. In certain years, Pepsi would have alternate versions drawn up for a promotion, like the Party Monsters, but that didn't mean the Monster stock art changed for other purposes. In fact, no decorations or toys featured the Party Monster art in any year.
The 1995 Halloween theme for Hardee's Restaurants was "Small Frights".

This is a sweet, vintage theatre give-away. Given to promote New York City's Times Theatre 1939 showing of "Human Monster". Note that the die-cut mask is only about 6" to 6½" tall - a little small for adults but just right for the monsterkids of the time.

I have had my eye on these beauties for more than a month. Out of 4 Walmarts I talked to weekly I mostly got vague "come back later and talk to so and so" (piss off) run around answers and finally one "sure, here ya go." they were scheduled for take down yesterday 10/31/2014, so head on over to your local Walmart cardboard recycle bin and dumpster dive for them I guess.

Sadly, that's the kind of treatment these films get nowadays. Director Kevin Smith gives one of his workers on "Comic Book Men" a hard time about still being a staunch Universal monster fan. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black, Smith is a huge fan of those lame Star Wars geek-fests.

I got the top piece from a local Walmart, but I didn't see the side pieces in any of the area Walmarts :(
Were the displays on an end cap or in the middle of an isle? Made a big difference in how they were displayed. Endcaps got the sideboards middle of the isle usually just the top piece. I didn't see any center of the isle cardboard Kiosks?(for lack of a better word) for these but sometimes new release movies get their own "display."
I live in a fairly large city with at least a couple dozen or more Walmart locations within driving distance and more than half I went into didn't have the side panels up, especially if they were not on an end cap. I am sure that some got ganked for a store employee's home Halloween decorations, or for insider sale on Ebay ( I looked and none up yet so far, but old pepsi/ Frito Lay displays and whatnot are listed for 50-90 bucks (yeah right, not paying that for some cardboard.) I bugged the four stores closest to me to get mine, my brother got denied by the dinks working at his Walmart Electronics section.
I always check places like F.Y.E. and Zurchers regularly for a Universal Monster cardboard stand up as they sell all kinds of characters but I have yet to see a monster, although I did grab an Elvira for my dad one year. Why has no one done this for UMs yet??? Or did I miss it and everyone but me has theirs already so they aren't redoing it?
I used the Drac untold promotion coupons to go see it twice for free.

Done what? Make UM standees? If you're talking about commercially available standees, there was a line of them several years back. They might even still be around. I'm sure you've seen the promotional standees, in video stores and grocery stores.

No, this was a store in Fort Pierce, Florida; but there may have been several stores that displayed (or, in this case, DIDN"T display) them this way.

"Sigh."
Holy cow that is funny. Do they actually expect some schmuck to pay nearly 100 bucks a piece for something that was free for the asking? There weren't any up when I started looking but it was inevitable. They might actually get sold even at 20 bucks a piece but not 100. hilarious how they are super rare according to the seller with no mention of cardboard or Walmart in the listing, 4,322 Walmarts in the U.S. according to their website and I am sure most got them.
Sigh, is right.

(Hope no one minds me dragging this thread back to actual free monster items. We really need to start a separate thread dedicated to monster-themed advertising and store displays. It could be a rich topic.)
The latest DVD promo came with free movie tickets so I feel that more than qualifies for the title of the thread and the related advertising was really cool. Advertising is advertising free or not, whether on a Pepsi promo or a DVD header. If we are splitting hairs why not separate them all out and make a happy meal toys post, a printed ad post, a give away offers post etc. if you feel the topic has strayed far from pure? Movie advertising was free for the asking I.E. Free Monsters.
I enjoyed "Creepshow" when it came out in 1982. But my theater didn't hand out this cool 7 in. waxed cup.
Now I feel cheated.

This 16 oz. monsters cup was issued by Pepsi with Ponderosa Restaurant.

The best info I can find indicates that it might have been sold at the Universal park in 1991. If so, that would mean it was NOT a freebie. But I have been unable to get definite information confirming this. Could be true, since I don't see a restaurant chain name anywhere on this one.

These paper masks were issued by Budweiser in 1994 for what they were calling a "Halloween Shreek-end". (Halloween was on Monday that year.)
The two pieces in the foreground are little paper tents that would be stood up on table tops.

Since these were issued by a brewing company, the masks would of course be adult-sized. But, really, what adults would wear these things? (Very drunk ones, I suppose.)
I consider these very marginal monsters, but I know there are some here who are fans. (I was too old for these cereals when they came out - besides I always liked the basic, unsweetened cereals.)

That being said, these may not have been entirely free. A small surcharge may have been added to get your drink in one of these beauties. (I would have happily ponied up the extra change.)
I have never seen an example of a Hunchback cup. Anyone out there have a photo to share?

This is a REALLY cheapo free monster item, but I find it interesting.
This 1976 Coca-Cola waxed paper cup has been described as a "Park Exclusive". Pepsi is pretty strongly affiliated with Universal. Was it preceded by Coke? When did Pepsi come on board?

The cup uses the same long-haired Frankenstein image as does this 18" Index Toys doll. The doll has been described as being from the 1980's
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7390/16459320212_729f023bae_z.jpg)
So... Was Coca-Cola the official soft drink of Universal in 1976, did Pepsi let their contract with Universal lapse temporarily - Or is this an aberration that was used by Kwik-E-Marts?
That's very cool. I have a button that used the same graphics. The frankenstein image was also used on souvenir pennants sold at the parks.

The 1995 Halloween theme for Hardee's Restaurants was "Small Frights".
They gave out this glow-in-the-dark bucket:

There were also a Dracula cup, Creature cup, and evidently a Hunchback cup issued at the same time.
That being said, these may not have been entirely free. A small surcharge may have been added to get your drink in one of these beauties. (I would have happily ponied up the extra change.)
I have never seen an example of a Hunchback cup. Anyone out there have a photo to share?
Randomly enough, Clay (member clay.sayre here) just posted a photo in the Vintage Monster Toys fb group that has the Hunchback cup in it.

It seems that these are classic Universal films. Why would they have chosen a different Hunchback? The Charles Laughton film was good, but it was an RKO release. Is there another Universal Hunchback film that they could have chosen?

This bag dates to the late 1980s... maybe 1990 at the latest. The insurance company my mom worked for gave them out locally during one of the last few years I was young enough to go trick-or-treating, and my sister and I ended up with multiples. There are probably still one or two wadded up in boxes somewhere in my parents' attic.

Here are some TV monster give-aways:
Pepsi and Nick At Night teamed up to produce these Munsters masks that were given out at Target department stores to promote "Halloween Boo Bash", 1995. They were to be cut out and worn like glasses.

The back.
Another mask:
This cut-out mask was to given away to promote 1980's midnight showings of the 1977 film "Eraserhead".
Not really a monster movie? I contend that any movie that can contain the line, "Mother, they're still not sure it IS a baby!", should qualify.
Those Munster Masks are really fun! Seems like an odd item for 1995. A lot of folks others than us monster kids would have forgotten all about the Munster gang by then. And younger kids most likely wouldn't even know who they were.
Another questionable mask:
"The Return of Chandu" may not be strictly a monster movie, but anything featuring a 1934 Bela Lugosi film is aces with me.

Most Monsterkids are into related genres such as Mystery, Action/Adventure, Exploitation, etc. There are a lot of things that cross similar genres and blur the lines. All of this should be welcome on a monster oriented site.
I wonder how many times an actor played the villain in the first movie and the title hero in the follow-up? (I'm guessing not many.)
Here are some interesting generic monster toys from Taco Bell restaurants in 2003. They are called "Creature Crypts" and each figure comes in whatever they might have been buried in. By working a lever located at the bottom the monster could be made to spring erect in his coffin, crate, etc.

Seems Roy Rogers Restaurants are associated with Hardee's. They Gave out the same bucket in 1993:

Certainly the same sculpt - just different colored rubber.
Premium award/promotional item makers put out catalogs to businesses for to order all sorts of items that they can have their names printed on. It is not unusual to see the same items appear in different uses. The finger puppet may have been a topper for a candy tube or part or some other Halloween candy assortment.
Cool. (I think I may have one of those somewhere.)

Evidently their "Don't Let It Get Ugly, Ask For Sharp's Tonight! - Keep Your Edge" slogan is a caution not to let the beast in you take control on Halloween.
Can't find a year on this one or if any other Universal Monsters were featured in this campaign.
Anyone out there know more about this one?

I have a Drac/Frank tabletop display from Miller as well. 1991 or so.
I doubt this Universal Monsters glass was actually free. But the familiarly designed plastic 16 oz. glass deserves to be here with all the similar ones already posted. It probably sold for a very small additional amount over the cost of the drink.
No idea where these were utilized. Never seen them before.

UNIVERSAL MONSTERS - Cup - Plastic - 16 oz. - Ribbed sides - Makes for nice light pattern.
Here is a cup design I have seen only once before. It is the same Frankenstein & Bride cup as the Mr. Hero one in a former post, but without the "Mr. Hero" logo on the back. It is 7 in. tall, so presumably is 32 oz.
FRANKENSTEIN - Cup - Pepsi - with Bride - 7 in.
Also, here is the previously unseen Mummy & Wolf Man companion cup:
Monsters - Cup - Pepsi - Mummy and Wolf Man - 7 in.
Since these cups do not have restaurant logos, it is impossible to be certain where they were used.
The unpopularity of these graphics has been discussed here before. I thought that Mr. Hero was the only business to use this style cup. But, now that I see there exist cups sans logo, it makes me wonder why so few have shown up on eBay in the past.
I guess users disliked these enough not to save very many.
Do you know if those have a Universal copyright (or TM) on them? I can't tell what that one mark opposite the Pepsi logo is.

It's the same as this logo:

What was the story on that?
It couldn't have been hanging there since 1992? Did the store find a few left over monsters and give them out recently? What are the dimensions on that sign?
(Did they give you the sign, or did you grab it when they weren't looking?)
______________________________________________________
EDIT:
OH! New York Comic Con! (I finally get it.)
Nice find. I've never seen that version of their sign.
I've broken out in jealousy bumps all over.
Hahaha! That would be nice if WC magically pulled these out of the archives and back into our hands. But sadly, that isn't happening and this cost me a lot more than a few kids meals and some thievery. 😉
To answer your question about the size, it's 16x20 and made of cardboard. The same print is on both sides and the price numbers in the corner are stickers. I guess the meal price varied by market. It's got a few dings on the edges and overall wear but is in pretty nice shape for being 25 years old. I'm impressed someone had the forethought to save it all this time.
Edit - sorry for the confusion about NYCC, fixed it.

Sweet little cup with a Graveyard, Egyptian paraphernalia, Spider Web, Frankenstein, Witch flying across a Full Moon, Tombstone, Bats, Dracula, Mummy, Ghost, Coffin, Werewolf, Spooky Tree and three Skulls scattered around.
So, of couse, I love it. My only question is - what was the "Cleopatra's" that issued this cup and do they still exist?
Probably unrelated, but there's a Cleopatra's (beauty) Salon in Fort Worth (home of Pescor Plastics).
I'm fairly certain that this is a "throw" from the one of the floats in the Krewe of Cleopatra's Mardi Gras parade that year. While Beads and doubloons are the most popular such items, other imprinted items like cups and mini-frisbees are also commonly distributed. While the manufacturer is in Fort Worth, that Krewe marches in Houma, LA.

October always makes me nostalgic for the time when fast food chains would try to outdo each other with the enticing Halloween toys for their shorter patrons - and a lot of older guys who really should have outgrown ghost, witches and monsters a long time ago
Here is a paper cup put out by Pepsi in conjunction with Universal Studios. A true Free Monster item, these lowly little throw-aways must have tickled more than one monsterkid in their day.

Perennial cinematic butler Arthur Treacher served as announcer/sidekick to Merv Griffin after his acting days were over. The daytime talk show spurred such a resurgence in his popularity that he opened his own string of franchised fish and chips restaurants - probably trying to piggy-back on the recent rise of the H. Salt chain.
Here is an obscure pair of monster Funcups featuring "Boris Badfella" and "Wally Werewolf" from 1972. (Treacher died in 1975.)

Had to reach all the way back to 1972 and as far down as the short-lived Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips to find a sad pair of generic monster cups like these to add to this thread.
Isn't anyone giving away monster premiums of any sort anymore? Anyone at all?

Those are very sweet! I'd love to have a Frank from that set. Unusual to see a Coca-Cola Universal Monsters cup. They are almost always Pepsi brand.
They can't be terribly old. They have the narrow bottom to accommodate automobile cup holders. When the larger drinks (44 oz. and bigger) first came out, the sides of the cups were straight, and the wider bottoms didn't fit in the older cup holders.
Right after I bought a larger cup holder, they narrowed the cup bottoms and my drinks fit too loosely.

I think it was the introduction of the 7-11 Big Gulp and beyond that caused the holder problem. Later, cup holders would have a wide outer ring and a smaller middle ring in the bottom - to take both sizes.
When did the Big Gulp, Super Big Gulp and all that become popular?
(I'm so old, I remember 8 oz. glass bottles of Coke - 6½ oz. when bought from a vending machine.)

I remember a Coke, or Pepsi thing that wasn't a vending machine, but like a big chest of cold water with the bottles just sitting in there. You'd just grab one and pay the gas station guy.

Not that old. I remember 6½ oz. Cokes being available in the ice water coolers in every corner variety store for eight cents plus a two cent (returnable) deposit on the bottle. That lasted through to about 1966 in my neck of the woods when the bottle deposit was raised to a nickel. The ice water coolers were gradually phased out and replaced by refrigerated ones in the mid to late 1960's.

Variety/convenience stores didn't start to be paired with gas stations in Canada except perhaps in one horse rural communities until after 1980 or so. Like I say, those metal ice water coolers were in every corner variety store through much of the 1960's until they were phased out by the refrigerated coolers. And there really was no joy like pulling a dripping cold bottle of pop (or even a bottle of chocolate milk) from an ice water cooler on a hot summer's day!
:)
I remember this kind, too.

Yes, I remember those type of vending machines too. The ones I prefer from the 1960's though were these Vendo 56 ones:

These Cavalier 64 ones were slightly bigger:

I think most of us remember those upright models. But we digest! Who knows something about the E-Z Cups?

Never head of Rutter's Farm Stores before. Turns out they have 46 locations, but only in Pennsylvania.
This 5.5 in., 20 oz. Glow-In-the-Dark cup was given out for Halloween in 1987. Side of the cup says Giacona Container, New Orleans. Bottom of the cup says Louisiana Plastics, St Louis, MO.

It just occured to me that the Wolf Man cup has Werewolf of London on it, not Chaney. Neat!

Yet the name London is nowhere on the cup - and it says Wolfman (sp) instead of Werewolf..

There is one other example of the graphic used in the 2 cups above. But this one was used in hard plastic cup complete with handle and lid.
The best info I can find indicates that it might have been sold at the Universal park in 1991. If so, that would mean it was NOT a freebie. But I have been unable to get definite information confirming this. Could be true, since I don't see a restaurant chain name anywhere on this one.
Anyone know for sure?

It is one of those borderline quality items that might have been a freebie, since the only other 2 examples were...
I've pretty much decided that these heavy duty 44 oz. cups are w-a-a-y to scarce ever to have been sold. I think now that they were some of the lower-level prizes in the Pepsi contests - along with T-shirts, sleeping bags, etc. If that is correct, they qualify as "free" monster items.

Here is another that I found recently. I came to me in its original sealed plastic bag. There was no lid in the bag, so I don't know if it ever came with one.

I hate when the monsters get too cute (or "cool"), wearing sunglasses and stupid hats and ridin' surf boards, etc. I have one large 7/11 Creature paper cup where he's wearing a dumb crooked cap. :P

Well, if you didn't like that cup, you won't like this one, either.
I also picked up a smaller cup of the same design that was either given away with drink purchases or incurred a small additional charge. Don't know what venues handled this. There is no sponsoring restaurant or convenience store identification on this.

:D HA! I never noticed that and of course now I'll never be able to unsee it.
Here are the Pizza Hut holograms from 1991; I thought that they would look better framed. Do you know how HARD it is to get a decent picture of a hologram, much less THREE holograms!!!

They do look great framed.
These little cups were made for Mardi Gras, 1995. The Bards of Bohemia presumably tossed these to the crowds instead of beads. Their theme that year was "Tales of Terror". The white cup on the left is a normal cup. The translucent cup on the right is a glow-in-the-dark version.
