Title: Monster Spoons, Sorry if this has been answered...
Post by: theripper1985 on April 10, 2013, 09:39:56 PM
I was wondering about the rarity and worth of some of the colors in the spoons...I have a full set of the grey ones and have stumbled on a complete set of orange spoons...I have never actually seen the orange ones in spoon form. I know the yellow are hard to find but I was hoping someone might know something about the orange ones.

Pretty sure he's refering to the red ones!  Yellow is the rarist from what I've seen/read!

I've got an unopened set of eight I-Scream Spoons (four yellow and four red) at auction this week... Zoo-Piks made these:

I think I've seen grey, but red seems to turn up most... yellow are rare?  I haven't seen too many loose spoons to give it much thought... orange, though, I've not seen.

No, I mean orange...I thought the same thing and I looked at my stirs that are red and there is a definite difference. The Spoons are orange. Here is a picture

These may very well be sunbleached red spoons!

That was my thought also. I had a bleached Creature that was pink.

Well, I thought that too about the bleaching, but the spoons are all even in color and no ounce of red at all...these spoons are orange in color.

Good to know...either a rare color, or somebody has the molds/dies. I don't recall ever seeing orange, but I do recall several years ago a load of red ones popping up that just didn't seem right. They seemed thinner and more opaque in color value, and just seemed "new". I was told they were from Dairy Queen or some other ice cream chain. Did all the orange ones come to you at once?

What is the story on the loose white Wolfman spoon? He appears a bit deformed or cockeyed on the spoon. Did he come with the orange ones?

They all came at once...Ive had the grey spoons and the red stirs...but the orange spoons are all identical with the markings and such...they are all stamped with the universal monsters copyright on one side and the Zoo picks USA on the other side...def not a mold or bleached I guess its hard to show online...if only I could show you in person.

The spoons came in red and yellow packaged.  The stirs came only in red and yellow.  The gray and red ones were distributed to restaurants to use as promos for kids in grey and red.  I had a partial case of them at one point, and the case box had some graphics on the outside.

I have not seen orange ones, but I have a hypothesis...

From the photos, that shade of orange looks like a combination of red and yellow. I don't think that orange was a color they were normally made in, I have seen lots over many years, but no orange ones. I think that either by accident or because they were running out of one color or the other, the colors were mixed into the molding machine and some orange ones came out.  Either because someone was running out and decided to add a little of one color to the other in order to get the job done that day, or because someone inadvertently dumped some of one color into the other.

Either way, it didn't matter in the context of manufacturing, if a few went out like that.

My Mummy Spoon is a slightly different shade of yellow than the others.  Just a different shade of plastic that day.

Send me a PM if you have any interest in selling or trading the orange spoons.

Maybe you could take them and photograph them against a white background....or maybe a black background would be better!?  With just one red swizzle stick along the top or bottom of them for color reference?!

That is a great hypothesis, maybe that was the case. Here are some detailed pics and close ups.

I agree! That kind of sloppy manufacturing was not at all uncommon. I have a Krun-Chee Fighting Ship coin here on the upper right of the sheet that's a curious orange colour that I've long thought was a result of some red plastic being mixed into the yellow:

Plus I have an unusual teal coin that looks like it may have been the result of a casual mixing of the green and blue:

Well, I found this a lot sooner than I had expected.

It is definitely not faded.  It was just made in orange plastic.

The pictures above have too much glare to see the real colors very clearly.

I did get one picture that very accurately shows the colors just as they appear to the naked eye:

Thanks for the heads-up, theripper1985!

awesome!!!! Where did you find them??

Some eBay seller listed 2 Frankenstein spoons separately.  One was listed as being RED and the other was listed as being ORANGE.

Good thing he listed them that way.  It was very hard to see the difference in his auction photos.  The colors were well within what one might expect from lighting changes.  I already had the red spoon.

I never would have thought to look for this if you had not shown yours.  THANKS!

I just recently scored 3 mon-stir sticks on eBay. they were grey and 2 of them had "the haunted house-hollywood" printed on them which was a swingin-hipster night club in l.a. back in the 1960's. i was thrilled to get them for approx $14.00 each... creature, frankie and the mummy. only one other person bid...... I'm sure they are much rarer than the regular grey seeing the night club had them special made....

That's really cool.  I've never seen any with a specific business on them.

Was it printed on the items or were the letters embossed/encised into the plastic?

Pictures, if you got 'em.

Looks like they just stamped the letters on top of the existing embossed words and then applied gold paint.

Weird to have paint on something that would be put inside a drink.

Very interesting.

Does anyone know if the Mon-Stirs Swizzle Sticks also exist in ORANGE?

Hard to tell on-screen, but are the "white" ones a true white or are they kinda gray in person?

I have about a dozen utensils/stir sticks and all are either red or gray/white.

Because the color is so pale, collectors call them white or gray interchangeably.  In fact, it kinda depends on the light source and the camera which word best describes them.  But the manufacturer describes the spoons and swizzle sticks as being  "Blood Red" and "Graveyard Gray".

So I guess we should try to get in the habit of calling them Gray all the time.

No mention of the scarcer Yellow or Orange spoons on the service industry bulk carton.

Are any of the colors mentioned anywhere on the small, party store retail bags?
