Did everybody see the lengthy "The Day the Earth Stood Still" remake preview over the weekend?
It looked very special effects heavy.
Much of the charm of the original movie for me lies in its simplicity. The special effects do not dominate the story.
I'm not too sure what I think of Keanu Reeves as the star.

Looks like crap! "Keanu, Barada, Nikto!"
I didnt see the preview and I have no interest whatsoever in seeing it. The casting of Reeves alone makes me steer clear of this one!

That is all that needs to be written....you may lock the thread. Oh, and the "crap" quote from Mike. That's important as well. ;D
I'm taking a wait and see attitude to this one.

Enough said , not even considering wasting my money.
I have to wait and see as well. Maybe they'll try to follow the original story: Farewell to the Master?
Can't improve on the original, so I'm gonna say, NO WAY IN HELL on this one. Keanu Reeves? No don't think so.
Hmmm.... why do I get "douche-chills" when I think about Keanu Reeves as Klaatu???
The trailer seems to show a lot of mass destructon, which is NOT what the movie is about! And you just KNOW that Gort will be some over-done CGI effect...
You know, Julian Blaustein made a tough decision when he decided not to allow Spencer Tracy to portray Klaatu... he knew that if that helmet came off and it was Spencer Tracy underneath, the movie was over... the same could be said for Keanu...
If it ain't broke , don't fix it.
I watched some of the original movie on broadcast TV last night. I didn't make it all the way through the film, though.
They kept interrupting it with pointless chatter by the "hosts" and commercials for the remake. The previews showed way more than I really wanted to see of the current version of this classic.
Here is the first review I've seen:

I love that headline !

You know what would've been better than a straight remake? A re-make type of sequel. Kind of like Psycho 2. We were given a warning in the 1950's to get our crap together or we were going to be destroyed. Instead of getting it together...things are worse than ever. So they decide to "scold" us for our greed, stupidity, barbarism and wantonness. At least it wouldn't stink up the original so badly. ;D
QuoteA re-make type of sequel.
Several years back that was in fact the plan, if I recall the reports. It would have been "Son Of Klaatu" and I think we may even have been supposed to swallow the possibility that Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal had done the wild thing.
Technically they could have; there's a dead zone between the last and second-last scenes where they've been alone on the ship together, and Klaatu has changed back to his spacesuit, and there's this funny little look on her face when he hails her farewell, that is pregnant with, er, possibilty. But he'd been resurrected, so it would all be a bit necro. Doesn't preclude the possibility. Hmmm.
"Thirty years ago my dad said, knock it off, you hosers, and he's dead now, so I'm here to..... oh,
there she is !
Hey, mom!!!"
Probably just as well it was never made, but still, I had some hopes for this one.
Don't forget Klaatu and Patricia were stranded on the elevator for thirty minutes too. ::)
Quickie, eh?
I saw it ... I liked it.. :) It does not even come close to the greatness of the original but it was fun and Gort was cool. So I liked it :)
Not the best but for a remake it was OK. I want to see it again.
Best..
Tom
It really wasn't all that bad at all, if you look at it as an entirely new movie and not a remake. As a remake it bites, as a new story it's watchable. I was starting to get pissed off part way into this, then relaxed and disassociated it from the original and it was alright for a Sci-Fi movie. I got to see this for free anyways. Nowhere near to being in the same class as the original masterpiece. It wasn't bad, although the character's names should have been changed to protect the innocent.
Yeah, my wife and daughter had been bugging me to go see it all week, and i really was hesitant, mainly because i like the original so much, but i was actually surprised at how much it DIDN'T suck, lol...
If you go into it with the original completely removed from your mind, then yes, it's definitely watchable....
Are we allowed to post spoilers here, because there's a few points i'd like to discuss at greater length...?

No rule against spoilers, but out of consideration for others, you should put a large warning in and perhaps even change the font color to black so it has to be highlighted to be seen.

this is where you put the spoilers!
I thought the ticket would come with a dunce cap because I really felt that tey talked down to me in the movie. There was nothing to figure out or come to a conclusion to. They simply beat the message in over and over and over and over. Maybe it was designed for preschoolers?
