Title: My old and new plastic halloween masks
Post by: Monsterscud on October 25, 2012, 05:32:39 PM
The first and second photo are of masks that I have had for many years, some of which are a little worse for ware around the edges. All of these to me look like Collegeville or Ben Cooper masks,Is this right? I know that the Dracula mask on the 2nd photo is Ben Cooper because it has a sticker on the back. The other photos are masks that I bought brand new this year, the ones in the last 2 photos certainly have that Collegeville/Ben Cooper look about them.

Thank you. Yes the bottom row are masks new this year, they are from a store here in the UK called 'Wilko' [Short for Wilkinsons] They were only 30 pence each. I can see why now that the one in the middle looks like the Melting man mask, never thought of that I just thought it was a Zombie of some sort. Do you think that the third one is based on any old Ben Cooper/Collegeville?

I think the inspiration for that zombie/Melting Man head was Forry Ackerman's Dick Smith DORIAN GRAY head.

Monsterscud,
I came across this post by googling "Ben Cooper masks." In your first picture, the mask of the orange creature with exposed brains is a mask I've been searching for for about ten years now. Myself, my brother, and a friend of mine bought several of them from a local dollar store when we were kids. We made it a character in our home movies we'd film and named it "Fredrick." Since then all the masks have been either lost or destroyed and ive been trying to find a "fredrick mask" so i could ressurect the character and make new videos for youtube. Is there any way youd be willing to sell that mask? It would mean the world to me.

That middle mask looks like a reissue of the Collegeville Melting Man. It's not exactly the same, but it's obviously based on it.

These images are from Nightowlghoul, even the one of my collection in the last post.

This is his childhood melting man, which is different from the boxed one I have.

I suspect the mask design predates the Melting Man movie.

Hi Fredrick

That's a great story and making more videos of your character sounds great. I have no idea what I would sell it for really or maybe something in exchange??  What do you think? I don't normally like to sell things I have collected but I think it would be nice for you to be re-united with a Fredrick again.

Well thats totally up to you. Surely you have more knowledge of masks than i do being that youre a collector. Back when we used to buy them from the dollar store they were a dollar but im sure its worth a lot more to you than that. So if you want to decide on what its worth to you maybe we can work something out.

I really have no idea what it is worth if anything, maybe one of the other members may have some idea. We'll work something out reasonable though.

You're talking about the pink mask with the exposed brain and white hair? I think $30 is on the high side. On ebay, it might sell for $15-$25.

Raycastile, yes thats the one. Actually back when i used to buy these by the dozen for just a dollar a piece they didnt come with hair which makes me think it was attached to the mask at a later time. But anyway, by similar masks i just meant other hard plastic masks that came up when searching "ben cooper mask."

Monsterscud, would you be willing to accept an offer of $25? I became going through some old vhs tapes and am currently uploading old fredrick videos to youtube. Heres the first of many to come:

Hi Fredrick

If you don't mind we'll pm each other after Christmas to sort out payment etc for the mask. Liked your video and look forward seeing some more. Need to think of the best way of packaging the mask so it doesn't get damaged in anyway.

Monsterscud,

Thanks again for providing me with a new "Fredrick mask." This past summer we filmed some new footage and plan on filming a Fredrick "movie" this year. Just wanted to share the link with you and anyone else who might want to see the mask in action. This wouldnt have been possible without your generousity.

The video can be seen here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uXE-JtlCT9U (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uXE-JtlCT9U)
Fredricks first of many appearances is at around 21:19

Because of you, Fredrick lives on! Thanks again.
