Title: Name 5 Things that Scare You
Post by: vintagehalloweentoys on September 23, 2012, 04:27:54 PM
Name 5 Things that Scare You.....You can even say why these things scare you, but you don't have to.

I'll go first:

1. Walking alone through a parking lot at night.
2. Driving on the highway during rush hour.
3. Seeing a large spider in my room and having it get away before I can do something about it.
4. Politicians.
5. Swimming where there's a potential of sharks, crocodiles, or alligators being in the water near by me.

Boats (that are floating on blue death)
Large bodies of water (blue death)
MRIs   (freaked out all 3 times)
Biting directly into anything frozen solid  (like a popsicle)
Movies, books, or discussions about demonic possession/exorcisms

Oh I am with you on the blue death! When we were younger my brother was bumped by a shark when we were swimming off the jetty on Huntington beach in California. I still love to swim however I still get nervous in the ocean or really deep lakes (some of those crazy freshwater fish get 5-6 feet long).

The only thing that really scares me is personal injury to my family, that and sharks. I am not afraid of the dark, corpses, cemeteries, creepy crawlies like snakes, spiders, or scorpions. Usually when I am in a truly creepy environment there is a smile on my face.

1. Getting sick, bad health of any kind always freaks me a bit.

2. Mannequins--Monsters and gore and stuff never scared me, it was always things like wax statues or stuff that was "almost human" that looked like it might come to life that scared me.

3. Ventriloquist Dummy's, see #2? Well magnify that by about 100,000,000,000,000 times and you have #3.

4. Bees. I wont kill anything unless I have to but the last few times I got stung it got pretty bad, actually I should go to the dr and get one of those pens but I've been lazy about it. With that, when bees are around I'm usually not.

5. When I was a kid I hates bridges. I dont know where it came from but I always thought the road was gonna end and we would go right off into the water. Now I drive over them fine and all but I still have the "let's just get over this thing already" feeling.

Many of us seem to share certain things we find scary....Getting sick, loosing loved ones, disease, world affairs, unstable and violent people, drunk drivers, etc...for good reasons obviously.

What I really find interesting is more of non real life fears/irrational (unlike the rational fears that are more universal like the ones I just mentioned).

Ventriloquist dummies... Mannequins....Bridges......now these are things that probably don't scare many people, yet I can see how these things could be scary and unsettling (especially under the right circumstances).

Here's 5 more for me...

1. Stepping on something sharp...like a piece of glass on the beach, or a rusty nail as you browse for some collectibles at a barn sale (although this is a very rational fear...kind of like the shark just below the surface).

2. Wind....especially on those dark cold nights when everything is quiet, and then you get that slow building howl from the wind.

3. Certain dolls....they can look like they will come alive and pick you off with scissors or a knife, laughing as they do it.

4. Alien Abduction/encounters....not like this has happened to me or I even believe in it, but I have driven down a few lonely roads in my time (I live in the country) and I've seen strange lights (they usually just turn out to be some weird car lights or farm equipment lights)....But once or twice the thought has crossed my mind...What would I do if there was some UFO hovering around or parked near the road?

5. Worms.....I find them gross. I do like to fish once in a while, and it's not like I can't bait a hook, but worms are kind of disturbing.
Title: Re: Name 5 Things that Scare You
Post by: charp13 on September 24, 2012, 02:35:37 PM
Stepping on sharp things is something I experience daily in this house of a thousand Legos that I live in, but I don't worry too much about it and I keep my tetanus shot booster current-especially since I cut my finger tip off a few years back.
worms are cooool! Hahahaha! Except for when I was working at a certain daycare center and we all came down with pinworms! Parasites are NOT cool!
All of the very real things that scare us like- disease, violence, world affairs, etc. are things we usually cannot control (for the most part), so I think that's why they scare us so much'
A lot of things scare us that we can easily avoid- like dark woods under a full moon, deserted old castles, abandoned asylums, and mad scientist laboratories!
Title: Re: Name 5 Things that Scare You
Post by: Flower on September 24, 2012, 03:21:01 PM
I wish that I had some "deserted old castles, abandoned asylums, and mad scientist laboratories!" locally and could put them to good use .. even if only for a blast of a Halloween party.

Cemeteries at night also scare me because of crime, not because of ghosts or ghouls ... I figure if I've done nothing to offend a ghost or ghoul, that it shouldn't have issue with me.

I remember seeing "The Island of Dr. Moreau" on TV when I was a little kid, and it scared me....It's been years since I've seen that one, and I was just thinking about watching that again at some point in the near future. I don't know if I saw "Squirm" or not....Sounded like a fun double feature!

1) Spiders. In one way or another in my head they are ALL the brown recluse and they are ALL trying to bite me. (Moths too.)
2) Losing someone close to me in a painful way.
3) The dark.
4) Abusive controlling anger in people. You never know when they'll snap.
5) Losing my looks. I know, it seems shallow...but I fear it. See, I don't have a whole lot else to offer. I'm not a cook, I detest cleaning up after others...I guess I just fear I don't have much else to offer. It's silly, I know.

Yeah, you're being silly.
Everyone has something to offer the world.

My Grandpa used to tell us this story about when he married Grandma back in 1917.

When they first met, he was completely enthralled by her.  She had beautiful long auburn hair.  She possessed a lovely smile and was, as he put it "stacked like a brick outhouse."  He also said she was statuesquely tall and had a beautiful singing voice.
Well, they were married.  And on the morning after the wedding night, Grandpa woke up and looked at his bride lying asleep next to him.
Her long hair was a wig hanging on the bedpost.
Her pretty smile was sitting in a glass of water on the nightstand.
Her "shapely outline" turned out to be a padded bra and a girdle lying at the foot of the bed.
And her height was a pair of elevator shoes under the bed.
Grandpa, in shock, shook her awake and cried out at her: "Sing for God's sake, Sing!!!"

She must have been able to sing. ;)
After all, they had 6 daughters and 14 grandchildren.

A brown recluse once tried to bite my cat! After I stomped the little s.o.b., I rhetorically asked it, "Did you really think you could eat it all?"

(1) The fear of clowns is limited to male adults.

(2) The deformity thing is no problem except when it's teamed with bad activities/ grotesque movements.  Jocelyn Wildenstein gets bonus points for doing the deforming to herself.

(3) I hate puppets and nuns and Lady Elaine Fairchild is a puppet with a nun haircut.  AND she's deformed. :o

Congratulations  :)  I just wanted to add that my husband and I went to a local restaurant many years ago, and it was Children's Night- which consisted of a female clown names "Babycakes" who made balloon swords. She was obviously in her 70s and had white cracked makeup on her face with creepy smeared red lipstick circling around her mouth in a frightening smear! I could not stop looking at her- mostly because she disturbed me with her loud Paula Dean-like voice. I didn't have a cell phone or camera with me (I wish), but I can vividly remember her face.  I can also scare my husband with the mention of her name! I guess he has a clown phobia as well. I haven't bothered to ask him in the 33 years we've known each other..I guess I'm waiting til we run out of other stuff to talk about- which will most likely be very soon! :)

1. fear of human parasites (no I am not talking about drug/booze addicts with a cardboard "God Bless" sign by the freeway exit looking for a free handout from the gullible) I am talking about the dreaded Loa Loa worm. I cringe just thinking about this thing! It starts with a bite from a giant fly (which is a vector species) then you get largish worms in your tissues: lungs, skin, spinal fluild, blood and worst of all your eyes!  :o Google that if you dare and watch them pull worms out of a destroyed eye! Hookworm, round worm and tapeworm are nasty but the Loa Loa will keep you from traveling to Africa or India once you know about them. Yeah also I am not eating sushi ever! you should see the awful cringe-worthy thingys people have gotten from eating that stuff.
Parasitophobia. in general or
Scoleciphobia fear of worms specifically

2. food contamination. I hate the thought of something unsavory possibly lurking in my food. I worked at a Frito Lay company once upon a time and they found dead mouse parts in the production line. They immediately stopped all machines not just the chips line involved, trashed all the food in the whole place not just on that one production line (couldn't be sure if it came from the potato truck or what,) threw out all the product bagged in the last 6 hours even recalling a few trucks that had left already. G-Damn right! Doritos are safe to eat, I now know that for a certainty. Great company, job sucked fierce though so I quit.
Mysophobia and Verminophobia nothing really specific about food contamination per se in the terminology

3. the deep blue sea (Blue Death.) holy piss monkeys! nothing will make one nervous like putting oneself totally out of their native element. I am a YODA master in the wilds, able to handle and identify any outdoors situation or animal, a veritable ranger out of the wild on solid turf be it jungle, desert or mountains. A true wilderness veteran. In the ocean it is a whole new ball game! not only can you drown, suffer nasty weather, get eaten, poisoned or get stung to death by myriad creatures but there is no utter isolation like getting stranded at sea, at least until some unfortunate gets stranded in space or on another planet or something. The ultimate irony would be to die of dehydration surrounded by ocean water. Plus you can't see very far and there is no telling what is eyeballing you from the depths. The more murky the water the worse the anxiety. In particular, sharks and salt water crocs can and have eaten many people alive. Jaws made me afraid to bathe as a small child. Talk about being vulnerable while treading water with your most tender regions exposed...shudder. The probability of having a fatal outcome skyrockets when you head out to sea compared to normal landlubber mortality factors. I have profound respect for Navy Seals who use this environment as sanctuary on difficult combat missions.  Now, given that disclosure I must counter with the fact that I swim like an Olympic athlete, I work with animals including crocs and I am scuba certified and CPR trained.
Thalassophobia

4. terminal wasting disease.  Something awful to make you immediately confront the fact that you have wasted large portions of your life and still have much you would like to do. Cancer, bubonic plague, AIDS, etc. something where you are forced to lose your health and watch your body fail until death becomes a mercy. Awful. Pity is not a strong enough word for the depths of anguish and sorrow I feel for the unfortunate who get some terrible disease.
Pathophobia
5. mother-in-law. I am seriously dating a woman where marriage is a strong possibility and her mother terrifies me. The thought of forced pseudo-friendship with her is revolting. Worse, what if my future wife turns into her in looks or personality? I stay awake at night over this one. terrifying.
Pentheraphobia

Now I know that all phobias are irrational because the danger or threat is actually very low statistically, but that doesn't prevent the fear.

most other stuff that is creepy or scary I actually love or am fascinated with.

Oh, so we're baring our souls here, huh? OK, what else have I got to do?

Things that scare me:

1. Failure
2. Clowns
3. Losing the people I love or seeing them suffer.
4. Losing my intellect, personality, or mobility.
5. Crowds.

Now, Francesca...ol' Baron Frankenstein seemed to have a thing for redheads, didn't he? First The Bride (although those white streaks must've spead and then met, it seems), and then her.

I've put this out of my mind but at one point I was very scared of getting the 'flesh eating disease' or Necrotizing fasciitis .... Now I'm really scared.

Another thing that scares me is being in a car with people smoking and polluting my air ... I am scared of second hand smoke.

Leeches! I don't know what is going on in this picture....Maybe this woman is getting some medical treatment done, or she had a really bad day swimming...

I've gone swimming in lakes where more than a few times I saw these bloodsuckers (as I use to call em) swimming through the water. I remember seeing one when I was younger that was the size of a small snake. I would always check my feet every couple minutes and make sure that there wasn't one or two that got attached to me.

This fear kind of ties into what's below the surface (or Blue Death as many a few of you are calling it) or stepping on a nail or broken glass.

All right Doc....So Imagine this:

You are sleeping in your room, when you see a magic door appear....You open that magic door, and you find yourself standing in a Walmart. The only people in the entire place happen to be Munchkins, and they're dancing up a storm to loud polka music that is being blasted through Walmart's speaker system. You run through the aisles looking for a way to escape the madness, when you stumble upon a mirror at the end of an aisle. You look at your reflection and Justin Beiber is staring back at you!

How's that for scary?

I tend to run in and out of stores such as Wal-Mart .. I hate going there but often the prices are too attractive to pass up.

I'm scared of trespassers.
People who listen at the back door of others.
Peeping Toms.
Vampires tapping on my window.
People who believe their own lies.

All in all, I'm a believer in law and order and documenting crimes and all else, but there are times when, if I think about it .. there are too many crazies in this (and in the unseen) world.

Needles--I'm usually a wreck when I see a syringe get pulled out and I'm so tensed up I'm surprised the needle gets past the skin.

Speaking in public
Driving/walking in not so friendly areas at night

I had a possible shark encounter when I was a little kid visiting Florida...I was near Ft. Myers at Sanibel Island. I was about 50 yards or so off shore swimming and splashing around. I could barely touch my toes in the sand in about 5 feet deep of water. All these fish started jumping around me. One after the next. They were within 20 feet from where I was swimming. I got spooked, and made my way to shore.

The next day I went out on a charter fishing boat. A couple of the guys working on the boat were talking about a 1200 pound Tiger Shark that was caught 500 yards offshore from where I had been swimming (on the same day I swam). I asked the the guys who were working on the boat what is going on when a bunch of fish start jumping around...They told me "that usually means a bigger fish is in that area".

hee hee.  I grew up near a deeep pond/lake that used to be a logging pond, overgrown.  The murky wavy depths fascinated me. And terrified me since I couldn't swim.  There were crawdads and poisonous lizards and turtles and snakes and weird things in there.  Oddly those things weren't scary. Just the possibility of rotting ghost zombie corpses. ;D

vintagehalloweentoys - that IS creepy!  My incident was late fall of '76.  It's amazing how far out you can actually go and still touch bottom, isn't it?  This was at a fairly secluded beach - just my girlfriend & I, and a few people quite a ways off.  I was way out there (up to almost my neck) and I turned around to see the tiny little speck that was my girlfriend sitting on the blanket.  For some reason, I grew very nervous and started walking slowly back.  It was late afternoon.  I estimate I tread through the water for about 25 yards, when I turned back around and looked out over the Gulf.  Now, I'm sure it's hard to tell just where I had been, but where I thought it was, I saw a good-size dorsal fin break the surface.  I had seen plenty of dolphins at other beaches, so I waited to see it go in & out like they do.  It didn't.  I backed up watching it the whole time, and it eventually went back under quite a ways off.  I was fairly close to the shore by then and made it back with all limbs attached.  I can't prove it was a shark, but it sure felt like it!

Had to think hard about this. Can't think of anything that scares me. I have no phobias that I have identified. If pushed I'd say a long lingering death wouldn't be welcome but if it actually scares me or not - I'm not sure.

Death does not scare me. Perhaps if I was a religious person it would,as the things I read in the bible makes it seem intolerable no matter which direction you go.

I think that losing beloved collections, loved ones, pets .. etc .. to a natural disaster, flood, fire or act of violence is more than likely on everyone's list but it's something that I don't like to think about ..  :(

If the movie was Australian, it probably featured a saltwater crocodile and not an alligator.
;)

Yes - it was a BIG salt water crocodile that had taken up residence in a mangrove-type swamp.  I watched Black Water twice - once, by myself and then again, with my wife & daughter.  Very suspenseful & realistic.

Losing my collection to fire, or natural disaster.

This one qualifies for the End of the World thread.

Neighbors  and/or their children destroying my garden
Locking a neighbor's cat or kid in the garage by accident.
Some crazy hurting animals.
People who accost people from their balcony.

I can only think of two things -

Crazy old ladies.

The ocean.

1. Lists of things

2. BEARS!

3. People who make lists

4. Certain David Letterman comedy bits

5. BEARS!

regarding- BEARS!
I had never thought about encountering a bear before, nor had my unfortunate brother. He lives in the Florida panhandle in a semi-rural area. One morning on his way into work, he hit a large bear crossing the main road, and totaled his car. My brother was unhurt, but felt so bad for the bear- which had shaken off the collision and walked back into the woods. He never saw any more bears after the incident, and always wondered the bear's fate....
So in conclusion: Bears are pretty scary! They can total your car & walk away!

Alzheimer's  (I saw my mother go from it)
Tornados  (I was terrified by the tornado scene in THE WIZARD OF OZ)
Wildfires ( I went through the "Witch Creek" fire in San Diego, 2007)
Worms, caterpillars and grubs (No explanation necessary)
Religious and Political Extremists  (My Doctor had his Office vandalized by them)

IMO no one cares for the political extremists, whether from the extreme left or extreme right.

They should be forced to bungee jump, or ride a skateboard, or something. EXTREME POLITICS!!!!

Earthquakes, including the terrifying one I experienced in CA in 1989.
'Hard to believe how much noise they make.
A friend watched very fast ripples in the ground under his orchard race straight towards his home, beneath it and past it.

Carjacking -  since I love my red convertible sports car. But these days I always carry police strength bear spray, which can disable a person for 30 minutes.

Fear of dying in a jet or airplane. I love the takeoff and landing parts, but at cruising altitude I get a terrible headache. Just don't want to die that way - screaming on a plane that is about to crash.
Loved the Snakes on a Plane movie, though!  :)

Dummies (the wooden kind) don't scare me in person but the movies about V. Dummies give them a back name and do scare me.

Wicked Lester, you don't scare me .. only give me a nightmare every now and again when you stop posting.

I agree - that's very scary.

On a lighter scary note:  The fear that your guests (4 cats, 1 Russian Tortoise, 2 Betta Fighting Fish & 2 human beings) will never, ever, leave.

The scary thing is that you'll miss them when they're gone .. for around five seconds.
