Danny Elfman is scoring THE WOLFMAN!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... Some nice folk at Universal just gave me a ring-a-ling to drop note that Danny Elfman is scoring THE WOLFMAN! Oddly enough - I was watching NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS on Blu-Ray - which has a stop-motion animated WOLFMAN and well... That music isn't at all right for this WOLFMAN. However, Danny Elfman... he could be awesomely perfect for this. He can give the gypsies their beat & jingle. He can give the moors their eeriness. And he can give the night air its menace - the moon its longing and the Wolfman -- a soul. And Talbot - his melancholy. Music will be key here. It can fill in the gaps - make you believe there is a man in a beast and a beast in a man. I can't wait to see what Elfman comes up with here. I just hope he can bring tears to the film. THE WOLFMAN is a sad sad story... he can make us feel that.
Hope he is in old form for this one. His efforts of late are "ok", but seemed less than inspiring, even his stint with Spiderman left me wanting. Hopefully he recaptures his days of Batman (about the only good thing to come out of the first film IMO), or better yet, work like he did on A Simple Plan. Looking forward to this film as well, and thanks for the heads up, Tom.
This seems to be the kind of thing Danny excels at. i think he will be great on this!
This should be a breeze for Elfman....since he blatantly stole music from the original Wolf Man to use in Batman!
Seriously, watch the Wolf Man again, specifically where Larry stands under Gwen's window to throw rocks...(with Saneman in shadow behind him) and listen to the music.
Sure sounds like Batman should show up at any time...

Just watched it.....man, there it be! The woodwinds nailed it. A bit cut off at the end, but I could not help but finishing it off with a hummm. Nice nail, Prof!

Elfman obviously grew up with his head FULL of Hans J. Salter music...naturally it creeped out.

This is great news because Danny Elfman is a great musician. I hope he actually re-records the original Wolf Man theme song for the opening credits but then gives it a score of his own, while incorporating some of the old music from the original into it. With The Wolf Man, the score was a very powerful aspect of the story telling. It was an epic score and really told the story all by itself. The original Wolf Man score could have told the entire story without one word spoken by a single actor. It was just one of those scores, kind of like the Halloween score, that really carried the film.
I heard once that the Wolf Man was the first horror film to have a musical score and if that is true then it was a mile stone for horror films.
That is false. How can anyone overlook the score to Bride of Frankenstein. I believe The Invisible Man also had a score. Dracula's Daughter had a score. King Kong had a score. Son of Frankenstein had a score.
Can't wait to see the movie and hear the soundtrack! I always liked Danny Elfman's work! ;D
I've noticed the Batman similarities in the Wolf Man score before.
As for the Wolf Man being the first horror score, I suggest you check out some 1930s horror films. Besides the original Dracula and Frankenstein, it's hard to think of one that did not have a score. I'm not sure if The Old Dark House had one. Maybe not. Some films, like The Black Cat, had scores based on preexisting classical music. Others, like Kong and Bride, had full blown original scores.
Yes, I think Max Steiner and Franz Waxman might take issue, haha!
It's all good, none of us is perfect with all the stats all the time.
I look forward to Elfman's score.
