Title: To open or Not to open....That is the question....
Post by: BigShadow on July 08, 2012, 01:12:17 AM
Okay.  So I collect a lot of stuff both new and old.  My new stuff such as GI JOE, Star Wars, monsters, and anything else I could find sits in it's package either on display or in a box.  I do have some open figures that I've put on display such as Universal MOnster figures from the late 90's early 2000's, McFarlane monsters, and Full Moon toys.....and Tortured Souls.  Any GI JOE or star wars I want to display out of the box I usually by two of them, one to display and one to keep in the package.  The only reason I displayed the horror figures was because I thought they looked great in the open, but now I wish I would have kept them in the package....just worth more.  I do want my stuff to be worth something because one day I might need to sell it to get by or to just get rid of.  But would I enjoy them more if I took them out of the boxes and put them on display?  But then the value would go down and loose figures are harder to sell.

I like my GI JOE'S in the package mainly because of the cool artwork that goes along with the figure.  Some toys just look better packaged.  But wheres the line between "collector" and "Collector"?

I take my monsters out because I enjoy displaying them.  There are some items I keep sealed, but they are few and far between.  I say that it's totally up to you.  I don't plan on selling any of my monsters which are removed from their packaging, so I don't have to worry about their value.  But, in sixty years, if anyone wants them, they can have them - they just have to promise to enjoy them as much as I have... meaning that they'd take them out of the boxes (even if they were still sealed inside).   :)  Otherwise, they're going into the tomb with me.   >:D

I take those bad boys outta the box/package, because I dig the smell and feel of new toys.  Doubles, I'll keep sealed, but I don't have many of those, anyway.  It's cool that they may be worth something, but I like to handle my monster stuff and at 56 years old, I've earned that right, ;D!  Now, if I ever score vintage toys in their original packaging, they'll probably stay that way.

When we were young did we care about the packaging no
We could not wait to get them out of the boxes
Why change now live for today my friends
And enjoy your items...

I don't think we need rules!   ;D

Started collecting toys (& comics) again in the early '90s. I do have one basement room that all 'moc' Spawn
& I love hanging around in it but I did end up buying doubles of most of them to open - I blame the TV show
'FX Collectibles' for the room, btw, which was on TV in the early '90s & had a segment where they went to
people's houses & looked at their collections.

Everything thing else gets opened- especially the Monsters!

I'd love to be able to afford to collect all my old '60s toys.
Can't say for sure, but I think I'd open them.

Everything else I collect: Books, Comics, Music & Movies gets opened & used  ;)

I'm mostly an opener. I've got a few doubles to keep carded/packaged, but not many. Even what's not out on display is opened; it's just easier to store most of my figures that way.

If I really must open something, I buy an extra one for that purpose. Otherwise, I leave everything sealed.
