Title: The Amazing Spider-man movie review
Post by: BigShadow on July 03, 2012, 02:17:06 AM
Let me start off by saying I'm a huge comic fan and have loved most of the comic movies over the years.  I also really liked the Sam Raimi Spider-man movies....yes even the third one sans the emo bit.

I went into this movie with an open mind about a new story and was looking forward to an entertaining version of this iconic character.  What I got was this: The first hour and a half absolutely 100% boring.  It took everything I had to keep my attention.  I understand that you have to go through the origin but everything was so drawn out and moved so slow.  I won't go into details so that I don't ruin it for those who haven't seen it yet.  The last 20 minutes or so had some action but was still not that good.  You really didn't care what was happening or about the characters.  At least I didn't, not like in the Sam Raimi Spider-man movies.

The lizard looked horrible and had a voice that really didn't match the look.  Spider-mans costume looked good though but no better than the original or Raimi's.

In conclusion, please do yourself a favor......if you have to see this movie wait until its at the dollar theater.

Unfortunately, this is what I expected. What I really hate most about this movie is its just so pointless.

I liked Spiderman, loved Spiderman 2, and though Spiderman 3 was not that good overall, what the movie did right, it did REALLy right.

And now they going to give him a sidekick in the comics, oh my head hurts.

The trailers and promos for this have all looked insipid and listless. Like it was made by someone who didn't care if they were making "Spider-Man" or "Sex in the City 3." The first time I saw the design for The Lizard, I thought, "Really? 'The Hideous Sun Demon' looked better than this." Overall, it just seems like the kind of over-hyped, mega-budget mess that, had it been made by Universal, they'd be tossing under the bus along with "The Wolfman" (2010).

Count....I refuse to see the new Wolfman movie, I just have a hard time wrapping my head around this remake.

The best part about the movie was getting my TDKR exclusive t- shirt

Gotta offer a counterpoint. I thought the movie was superior to the Raimi films in most aspects, and very compelling movie in it's own right. I think it was much less concerned with just getting Spider-Man translated to the screen like Raimi's film was, and because we have all seen the Spidey tropes before, it took it's time to dig in deeper and go more introspective. The storyline was more cohesive, and the characters better developed. The drama was more organic, whereas Raimi pulled in his old horror showman skills with going over the top drama and pathos.

It's a bit like comparing Burton's Batman to Nolan's Batman. Burton and Raimi both bring skewed visions of reality, whereas Nolan and this dirctor, Webb, present a more grounded story.

I think the Raimi movies are a bit more "fun", but I believe this film resonates more.

I thought it was very enjoyable. I much prefer Andrew Garfield as Peter/Spidey. He's able to project the vulnerable side of Peter, as well as the wise-cracking cocky side when he is Spidey. Emma Stone was a great Gwen, and the two of them had real chemistry (something I never felt from the Maguire/Dunst pairing). Spider-Man is much more, well, spidery in this -the way he fights, his web-swinging -it's all much more like the comics. Martin Sheen does a solid job, as always.

The one area I found to be weak was the whole Lizard storyline. Without saying too much, his master plan felt like  'been there, done that.'

Moonshadow.....I thought the actors were a perfect fit for their roles and played them superbly.  The thing I didn't like was the slow pacing and how each scene was drawn out.  A better story with the same characters would be awesome.  But I didn't quite understand the prolonged skateboard scene or the first hour and a half of talking and drawn out scenes.

I went in to it last night very  skeptical but walked out blown away. Two thumbs up.

Like most my main concern was it just being pointless and boring. I loved and continue to devour the Raimi films. I just didn't think I was ready to be interested in a retelling of Spider-Man. Then I grew even more weary when I heard the movie spends a lot of time on the origin - that was exactly the stuff I didn't want to see again.

But somehow the movie just absolutely nailed it. I never felt bored, deja vu, or a "been there" feeling. It is so incredibly different in tone and atmosphere it really stands on its own feet. It is darker than the previous trilogy - obviously this was made in response to the success of the new Batman movies - but it still retains a more light hearted Spider-Man charm.

I liked the actors, I liked the Lizard, the fight scenes were amazing...

After getting home last night I watched all three (!) of Raimi's trilogy (!!). (Yes, I watched four Spider-Man movies at a total of +10 hours yesterday). Although I believe the first Spider Man movie remains the definitive film for the webhead, I think Amazing stands alongside Spidey 2 and head and shoulders above Spidey 3.

Was a reboot update necessary? Certainly not. But that doesn't make the Amazing a bad movie and it doesn't stop it from being more welcome (and different) Spider-Man action. And really, how many times was Batman restarted or rebooted lately (Burton, Joel, Nolan)? I was 13 when Raimi's Spider Man released in theaters and it was a very relatable film to me then. As a kid, that is part of what makes the Spider-Man character - he's relatable. The Amazing shows me how much can change in 10 years (and makes me feel old) - there is a new generation of Spidey fans and this movie is much more connected to the current crop of kids than Raimi's. It may seem like a short in between but times have changed.

For the record everything about The Amazing reminds me of Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man comic. Seems like that should have been the title if "The Amazing" wasn't such a sure fire blockbuster title.

8.5/10

Overall, I enjoyed it, but not as much as the first Spider-Man movie.

This is a reboot and while it did kinda lose it's way a bit, it didn't really need a full reboot.  The action was so CGI heavy that at times I was thinking I was watching a Playstation, but to be fair, that's the only way to do it. There were aspects I liked better.  Check it out, but don't go in with high expectations.

I desperatly wanted Raimi to use the Lizard, so even though this new movie is a total reboot I am glad that Lizzie is finally getting his big screen debut. Now if only they would use Stegron the Dinosaur Man, I'd be in comic/monster geek heaven!

Shame ,it's the movie Rami should have made after Spidey #2 instead of #3, he teased us with Dr. Conner. This flick is head and shoulders above Spider-Man 3, an excellent reworking.

I thought it was a very good movie.  When the first Raimi Spider-Man came out, I was a senior in high school, and that was pretty much all my friends and I talked about for the entire summer, so that movie is very personal and special to me.  But I did think this new one was very well done.

Plus Emma Stone is smoking hot.  I'd like to cover her with my web

Alright I got the option to watch it for free, so I did... And it was better than the way the trailers made it appear. I liked it a lot better than Raimi's spiderman IMO.

I hate everything about Amazing Spider-Man; the script was extremely sloppy and pedestrian, Peter Parker was a douche and he had absolutely no relationship with Aunt May!  I fell asleep right around the final battle....that's how "exciting" this movie was for me.  Now they are already trying wedge not 2 but 3 villians into the second installment with a possible lead up to the Sinister Six in the third film......To bad Raimi didn't get to tackle the Sinister Six; I feel that at least if he got to do it it would be a fun film and much more true to classic-Marvel, Stan Lee, tv incarnations and classic-comic Spider-Man than the "extreme"-2000's version of the character that is being presented in the current film series!

And yet more butchering of Spider-Man....Mary Jane Watson is being cut from the sequel!  As it is the character only had 4 scenes!

From the look of things, she should count her blessings.
