There's no frickin' way I could pick one over the other!! All three have been "mentors" to me via their art. All three are "gods" in their own respects. All three are respected and loved by millions of artists and non-artists alike.
This is like choosing one child over another! Sheesh!! :D

They're all great .. I like Bama the best .. :D
I agree with Illoman-no way i can choose, they are all top favorite Artists of mine. I would also have to add that for giant monster art, Bob Eggleton and Yuji Kaida are tops.
Can't do it.
All....So......Talented!!! Head....going to....explode!!...... GOGOS!!!! But the other two are masters of their art as well. >:D
Hepcat!!!!! Fowl Servant-O-Satan!!!!! Curse you for compelling me to pick one Monster-Artist-GOD over another!!!!!........okay.....Frazetta. Ya happy now?.....evil feline. :'(
This is like asking me wether I'd like to breathe, eat, or sleep. They are all awesome..um.............darn.........when it really comes down to it, I like the simplicity and vintage style of James Bama.
FRITZ! His was the first fantasy/monster art I ever saw. I love Basil and Bama, but Frazetta was DA MAN!
Tough call, but monster memories point to Gogos.

I love all three (surprise!) and each one brings up a different vibe with me. Bama and his Aurora depictions are the most iconic images of The Monsters for myself. The spookiness and unforgettable brilliance of color stands out to me so much - just monster greatness!
Frazetta's interpretations & style have always fascinated me, and after buying a couple of his books in the 70's and seeing the 2003 documentary on Frank, PAINTING WITH FIRE, it sealed the deal.
Gogos and his more "realistic" touch - it's like the monsters were sitting for him, taking breaks so they could go out and drink someone's blood or something. It's guys like he, Mike Bennett & Daniel Horne, that just blow my frazzled mind.
That said, for the Uni-Monsters, Bama's my favorite.
But, I still voted for FF. His work has mesmerized me for so long.
I like Bama, especially because of his association with the Aurora models, but Gogos did so many great FM covers that I love more than the model box artwork. My vote, however, went to Frazetta. His art is something beyond the others. His form and technique simply astound me. Even a rough pencil sketch is so fluid and captivating.
I would love to won an original piece by any of them , of course, but that's not likely to happen. Also, there are some great current artists, many who are members here, whose work I adore. Oh, if only I had unlimited walls for all the prints that I'd love to hang up.

Rob, I'd love to own an original too. I can say I have all three artist's autographs, though!! ;D
This is borderline impossible. It's like asking me what I like better water or air.
I went with Gogos because to me, his illustrations are the definitive look of the characters we know and love. Bama and Frazetta have done nothing short of genius work--but for my own personal tastes--when I see Gogos do Frankenstein I just think that is exactly how the monster looks. Whereas I see Bama and Frazetta and I feel it's their interpretation..follow me??
Having said all of that--Bama's work to me is something I can walk around in and touch. Those colors and the backgrounds. I always want to know "what's going on back there?" It's like I can look at the Aurora boxes and in my imagination get this panoramic image of what else might be going on in that scene, that the main artwork is just a small piece of Bama's incredible monster-verse.
Ultimately all 3 of these guys play a huge roll in keeping the kid in me alive and well.....I'm still stunned whenever I see something from the 3 of them.

Love 'em all. Refuse to choose.
This is why some cultures eat cats. I chose Gogos.........but I'm going to register as 2 other sock puppet posters and vote for Bama and Frazetta too. Geez, I feel like I just cheated on my wife.
....and Frazetta pulls into the lead! Frank Frazetta was the epitome of cool. I think the man was the best artist who ever lived. Not only that, he was an awesome athlete. He could have played major league basesball, and he threw a mean punch. Frazetta did, and always will, RULE! 8)
I can't choose one over the other either.
BK
Oh. I guess I didn't pick the most compelling works by these fellows after all.
:(
After I let my overheated emotions cool down, and gave this some thought, Hepcat asked which "monster" art you liked best, not which *artist* you liked best. When I considered it in that light, Basil Gogos is the obvious choice. While Bama and Frazetta each did some killer monsters, Basil is King of monster art and will forever be. It was his FM covers that have thrilled and inspired me for forty plus years. All hail King Basil!!!
(In a cult like chant).... ALL HAIL KING BASIL !!!!!!
I like Illoman's logic. I wanted to vote for all three, but that's like saying the Godfather Trilogy is your favorite film.
Basil Rocks!
Gogos, all the way.
For Monster art, it's Basil, all the way!
Man... that's a tough one. I'm stuck between Bama and Gogos, personally.

They're all obviously gods. My personal preference is Basil Gogos. 8)
Basil Gogos is my favorite, although Frazetta is awesome.
Frank Frazetta was also well adept at doing more light hearted material:
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Balticprince/General%20Album%202/FrazettaMadMonsterParty_zps263ce536.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/Balticprince/media/General%20Album%202/FrazettaMadMonsterParty_zps263ce536.jpg.html)
:)
My rankings are based purely on sentiment:
Tie for first between Gogos's Famous Monsters covers and Bama's Aurora kits -- for those of us who were monster kids in the late 50s/early 60's, who wasn't completely absorbed by their artwork???? Sort of like being invaded by mind snatchers. For me Frazetta, although great, is a distant third because he really didn't focus on movie monsters. I actually liked Ron Cobb's FM covers better than Frazetta stuff, and of course his production design work for "Alien" is legendary.
I voted for Frazetta, but all of these men are top- of- the- line in their own right, so it's a win- win- win situation.
Not that Mr. Gogos needs any help in this poll, but here is another uncommonly good effort on his part:

Yeah, unfortunately the feet are a little off. Shows even Frank was human I guess. We have to remember that he was ripping pieces of wall off in his basement and knocking out many of those Warren cover masterpieces in one night just to make some survival money. He'll always be THE MAN to me.

All 3 rule! Basil for the win though for me!
Bama. Those original Aurora kit painting are awesome. Gogos comes in second. Some of my favorite Famous Monsters covers are by artists other than Gogos.
Eenie... Meeny... Miney... BASIL!
But yeah, all 3 kick butt! Now, had you actually made Jack Davis part of the poll, he'd be MY no. 1.
In retrospect omitting Jack Davis constituted unpardonable negligence on my part.
:(
Well, from someone who has collected original art for quite some time, all 3 are true masters. It is the style of interpretation of the subject matter that sets each apart. And this also includes Jack Davis mentioned above. In my opinion, Frazetta has a much different style to his paintings, while Bama and Gogos, while maybe not quite the same, are on par with amazing realism. As Buzzybean mentioned above, other artists are deserving also for their work, the Vampirella covers of Enric, the FM covers of Adkins,Cobb,Ken Kelly, even Nuetzell, while not in the category of the big 3, made us smile with his renditions of monsters for some of the FM covers. With the amazing amount of actual works produced by these artists back in the day, it is astounding that they produced masterpiece after masterpiece in the way they did. Those of us who are a bit older are truly lucky to have grown up with their works as they became the newest cover, or the newest box art of the time.
With all my ranting above, I forgot to mention my favorite artist, it would be a toss between Bama and Gogos.

I agree. And while I think the covers that Frank Frazetta did for the very early issues of
Creepy and
Eerie are absolutely fabulous, I prefer the realism of Bama and Gogos to the surrealism that pervades almost all of Frazetta's monster art.
Quote from: Hepcat on June 19, 2012, 04:17:57 PMWhich of these artist's monster related renderings do you personally like the most?
Because Basil Gogos did so much more monster related artwork than did James Bama, Gogos also ended up covering a broader range of interesting subjects. That would have me leaning to Gogos.
But!!! Taking their broader portfolios into consideration, James Bama has the edge. Quite simply I think Bama drew people better.
