The Big Three.......
Count Chocula, BooBerry, Frankenberry
FREAKIES. Then FRANKENBERRY and COUNT CHOCULA, in that order. Man I miss FREAKIES cereal.
Nothing beats the Count
Count C.
Boo Berry
And Lucky Charms for my 'other' ... the little green men are scary .. just watch Darby O'Gill and the little people.

Ditto, but I prefer the sugary coating of days gone by over todays bland bits of grain.
Of the cereals listed I picked Count Chocula and Freakies (I still remember the Freakies toys in the box). I also prefered Quake cereal over Quisp, even though they were the same just different shapes.
Do they still make Frankenberry? I miss it.

Yep, they still make all three of the original monster cereals but they usually don't stock it until the fall; I know you can find it at Target and Walgreens around that time of year.

Including Lucky Charms as a voting option did indeed cross my mind although I ultimately opted not to include it because Lucky the Leprechaun is always portrayed by General Mills as such a friendly sort - even on the Halloween box!

For one who has not lived even a single lifetime, you are a wise man.
Now just a doggone minute.
If fink and weird-oh plastic kits are not to be categorised monster models (as voted here), how the heck are Freakies, Quisp and "Halloween" edition cereals considered "monster cereals"? ??? Hmmmm?
1. First of all this poll predated that other one.
2. Secondly balloting has just begun in that other poll. It'll be weeks before any conclusions can be drawn.
3. Thirdly, results in the Vintage Monster Toy Forum have no legal status in this Games, Polls and Lists Forum.
4. Fourthly, Freakies are freakish monstrosities that devour the unwary while Quisp is a monstrous space alien bent on conquering the Earth and turning earthlings into a food source.
5. Finally, I'm still only considering Flower's suggestion to add Lucky Charms to the poll choices and have yet to make any official determination.

Here's my two cents .. this is a scary cereal ~ look at the little monsters ...
Life cereal: Mikey likes it! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYEXzx-TINc#)
Aren't Fruit Brute and Fruity Yummy Mummy the same cereal?
Not according to either Fruit Brute or Yummy Mummy.

Sorry. The sugar content of that cereal is far below that of the minimum standard required for a slot in this poll.

I want some damn Count Chocula now. :-[
For me, humble opinion,
Count Chocula - best taste, who doesn't like chocolate
Fruit Brute - always gets my vote because......well, you know (not a huge fan of fruity cereals though)
Yummy Mummy - love the marshmellows.
I actually still have a box of unopend Frankenberry from last Halloween in the pantry.
Love Freakies and the big three! They need to make them all year around and bring back Freakies!

Are you implying that Yummy Mummy had better or at least more marshmallows than does Fruit Brute?
???
None of the current versions taste much like the original versions, unfortunately and presumably because of a lack of enough sugar.
Quisp is all wrong, too, BUT Quaker (Quisp's maker), makes an easy-to-find, cheap bagged cereal called Sweet Crunch (or something like that) which tastes nearly identical. :D
Abd now a word from Quisp:

Monsterfink's art should be on all of Monster Cereal boxes!
Which one do I like the best....I can't decide, as they are all delicious!
I found the Monster cereal yesterday!! I went to drop off my daughter in law's birthday gifts, and popped into the Walgreens and I saw the display! We bought 9 boxes total, so we could make our yearly delivery to our son and grandson. When we got our 3 boxes home last night, we cracked open that sweet sweet Chocula, and each had a bowl.....ahhhhhhh. The first Chocula of the season is fantastic! My mind and body were so focused on the aroma and taste. I can think of no greater cereal on Earth :)
If it were a perfect world, I would marry Count Chocula.
So which ones did you find other than Count Chocula?
???
I found all three monsters atand walgreens last week. We immediately ate a bowl of booberry when we got home. And chased it with a bowl of count chocula. Frankenberry hasn't been opened yet. It wont last long when it is.
Its that most wonderful time of the year!
FrankenBerry, BooBerry, and Count Chocula all have appeared on the shelves here in Spokanistan!
And More!!
Candy Corn!
Chocolate covered marshmallow pumpkins!
Fall colored Hershey Miniatures!
Big bags of DumDumPops!
And something I've never seen before, bit I am a fan of now:
Cadbury Screme Eggs!
(http://imageshack.us/a/img818/647/cstorescremeegg.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/818/cstorescremeegg.jpg/)
Just like the Easter eggs, bur the "yolk" is green!
Oh yeah, this is the monster cereal thread. . .
Got a years supply of all three cereals in the basement!
Extra boxes of the Count Chocula ;D
My spouse insisted that we buy BooBerry, even though he'll only eat one bowl and forget about it til April- like he does every year :) And we also got the Frankenberry, which will be eaten by my spouse as well. I love the idea of Frankenberry and the artwork on the box is gorgeous ( Pink is awesome!), but it's not my favorite taste. I probably will eat a handful. But I am definitely going to make those Frankenberry treat bars for my party this year.

Yes, I agree!

Boo berry is my all time favorite cereal. I do regret never having tried Fruit Brute though.
FRANKENBERRY and COUNT CHOCULA is here. Last year I stocked up for three month supply, bet I do even better this year. Sorry, but I just don't care for Booberry.
With all the monster cereal eaters on this board, why have only 22 posters voted in this poll? That's what bewilders me. And surely Fruit Brute, Yummy Mummy and Freakies deserve more support.

On the other hand, the Leprechaun movies are truly scary. Not the character, the fact that someone thought they were worth making.
Still can't believe there's only four other FREAKIES fans here. You people had deprived childhoods.
I would buy freakies by the case if i could, i wish they would try to bring it back... Just went and bought some more booberry tonight.
I had a traumatic experience with Freakies, so I did not give it a vote. I've given my heart to the Count. I had my first bowl a few nights ago, and I always expect it to be super sweet, but I was pleasantly surprised by its mellow chocolate taste. My husband dove into the BooBerry last night and i swear I could smell it from across the room. So, he's opened box #1 of 2. Mark my words, he will lose interest and box #2 will be in the pantry til May or June. :)
My Walgreens only had Frankenberry and Count Chocula. No Boo Berry, but I stocked up on the others. They are out now lol. Hope they get more I need Boo Berry!

I contacted Ralston-Purina a few years ago to see what it would take to bring FREAKIES back. They said that currently their cereal production is limited to making some of the "store brand" copy cereals. They said that FREAKIES worked in the `70's, but they couldn't see it working today.
Boo-Berry, Freakies, Quisp
Something wrong here. I don't see that your votes registered.

At Target in Wilson NC they had all three cereals today, as well as smaller boxes of "Count Chocula" treats, and Frankenberry and Booberry fruit roll ups. I picked up both of the Count Choculas.

I concur. It's a great cereal, but only Frankenberry, Count Chocula, Boo-Berry, Fruit Brute, and Yummy Mummy were MONSTER CEREALS. I wouldn't even include Freakies, and they were a hord of monsters!
What I remember about Boo Berry: it turns your poop green. My cousin told me how awesome that was when we were little and I never forgot it. So I bought her Boo Berry socks two X-mases ago.

Quisp is a space alien like the Metaluna Mutant or one of the Flying Saucer Men. Quisp is therefore a monster.

This might be a can of worms... but I usually put monsters in a different category than aliens. OCCASIONALLY, they can overlap...but not usually. I'd say Quisp, not monster. Freakies, monsters.

I'm not sure I would classify something as a monster cereal just because it involves aliens or that a mutant is always considered a monster, for that matter the word monster does not necessarily a monster make in my opinion.

In the 70's there were regular FREAKIES, COCO FREAKIES, and FRUITY FREAKIES. The space version didn't appear until the early 80's.
Quote from: Ghost on September 22, 2012, 12:23:33 AM...for that matter the word monster does not necessarily a monster make in my opinion.
How then does an entity land on your exclusive list of monsters? What must it be/do?
Secondly, do you not think my poll would be both diminished and rather boring if I didn't have the Freakies, Quisp and Other options?
The lists you've posted of monster and non-monster cereals though are absolutely staggering in their extent! I'm in awe! Thank you very much for posting them.
This seems to be a particular area of expertise of yours. Are you a cereal box or cereal premium collector? Is there a book or website listing all this information?

In the common vernacular when talking about Monster Cereals generally it is accepted that it refers to the General Mills Monster cereals Boo Berry, Frankenberry, Count Chocula, Fruit Brute, and Yummy Mummy. Possibly because they are marketed as such. I think the criteria for me is that it fits the dictionary definition of a creature hideous either physically or mentally, or abhorrent that causes fear. I know that we are talking about cutesy versions marketed to children but Count Chocula is based off Dracula with a Bela Lugosi type accent, Frankenberry off Frankenstein's monster with a British Boris Karloff type accent, Fruit Brute off the Wolf Man, Yummy Mummy off the Mummy, and Boo Berry off a classic ghost with some reference to The Phantom of the Opera and a Peter Lorre voice. Traditionally all are forms of monsters based off of legendry and classic literature or films, ghosts, werewolves, vampires, and the undead. The monsters from the monster cereals legitimately try to scare children even if they are not always successful. Technically a lot of those that I featured as non monsters are actually monsters if only nominally and even E.T. scared children and adults alike, however they did not inspire in me that creepy feeling when looking at monster or Halloween related items that I love like the monster cereals do. Freakies are borderline but to me they are an everyday "monster" such as the Cookie Monster and are not spooky. The monster cereals are always depicted as being scary even if it was unintentional and even to themselves. Quisp is not a monster yes he is an alien but until he does something monstrous it won't count at least not for me. In the commercial you posted he is called on by the earthlings for help! He isn't even as scary as Marvin the Martian who at least tried to disintegrate the planet .

I do not think you were wrong to put other options in the polls as others clearly view Freakies as monsters and that is the basis of a poll to determine public opinion. I have stated mine and voted as such. To each their own. For me I need a spooky vibe to be monstrous.
My mother has given me a box of monster cereal ever since I can remember around Halloween and still does and I am 35 years old! This may have biased my opinions.
If my vote were not limited to three I would have voted for

Gremlins

While those three are all arguably "monster" cereals, they would not have "fit" as well in this poll as either Freakies or Quisp for two reasons:
1. The above three cereals are all spun off from movies. As such they were never intended to be anything but temporary offerings unlike the ones in my poll which were hoped for long-term successes.
2. The box art of the three cereals above consists of publicity photos. My seven selections are all characterized by box graphics that are line art.

1. Agree
2. Disagree only the Addams Family uses publicity photos. Ghostbusters has line art and Gremlins is a painting.

They are not mine. They are all stolen from the internet.
The medals in this one remain to be determined:
Franken Berry 19
Boo Berry 17
Count Chocula 17
Freakies 6
Fruit Brute 4
;)
On Friday I finally scored some Boo Berry, and today I got a box a Franken Berry! Still have yet to find any Count Chocula :(

Our local Target had "Count Chocula".
Count Chocula is available all year long in Toronto and therefore probably in the rest of Canada. The other monster cereals I don't remember seeing for the past twenty years anyway.
:-\
Forgive me for keeping this thread alive, but I had to give my 2 cents on my Count Chocula experience I had this morning.....There were only a couple stores within about 20-25 miles from where I live that stocked the Monster Cereals this year. One store had Frankenberry and Boo Berry, but no Count Chocula. I finally found some Count Chocula, and purchased 2 boxes....One to eat now, and one to eat later (perhaps this winter or Spring). I ate the Boo Berry and Frankenberry a couple weeks ago....not as good as I remember it tasting, but still a fun treat for sure. Today I poured a bowl of Count Chocula, and it tasted pretty bad. I don't know about you guys, but I remember Count Chocula tasting like Cocoa Puffs. This stuff I had today tasted very processed and not very palatable. Have any of you also noticed that these cereals (especially Count Chocula) don't taste as good as they use to?

Cereals in Canada don't necessarily taste exactly the same as they do in the States because we have different food regulations and regulatory agencies. In fact, I suspect our cereals are often retro versions of those in the States.
That being said, the last time I had Count Chocula it tasted like I remember Cocoa Puffs tasting, although sadly Cocoa Puffs is no longer available in Canada. Neither is Trix. But Count Chocula and Lucky Charms are sold year around.
:-\
Hepcat, I found this out while at a McDonald's in Toronto a few years ago. Distinctively different tastes.
Not a "bad" different, but different for sure.
Count Chocula!!!

Very impressive list! But (and it's a big one), the movie tie-in cereals you've suggested constitute "borrowed" themes and I have a right to expect originality at my breakfast table! No derivative characters are allowed. I expect all breakfast cereal characters to be hatched at the offices of General Mills, Kelloggs, Post, Quaker, Nabisco, Purina, etc. No Hollywood retreads allowed by this monster kid, no sireeee! I leave those to the
National Enquirer crowd.
Therefore Monster Pops would be the only one from your list I'd be willing to add to my poll. By the way, do you have a box?

I wouldn't add Monster Pops to the poll because it is just a seasonal Halloween version of the regular Pops without a defined character. Then again General Mills Monster cereals have been seasonal in the U.S. for awhile now. I do not have a box any longer.

Incipient is the correct word, nascent would be another that would accurately describe it as it consists of very few in box monster related premiums and toys and a few collected boxes over the years. My brother has General Mills Monster wacky wobblers, the original vinyl premiums, several in box toys, plush dolls, and boxes, etc.

Quote from: Hepcat on October 23, 2012, 10:26:42 PMThat being said, the last time I had Count Chocula it tasted like I remember Cocoa Puffs tasting, although sadly Cocoa Puffs is no longer available in Canada. Neither is Trix. But Count Chocula and Lucky Charms are sold year around.
On Saturday I scored a box of Cocoa Puffs imported from the States at the Nutty Chocolatier on Queen Street. The store carries a lot of treats and snack foods imported from the U.K. and the States:

The Cocoa Puffs tasted like Count Chocula without the marshmallows, which is the same as I remember.

There are still only three votes separating first from third here!

Honestly the only one I've ever tried was Count Chocula in the early 70's and it grossed me out.(And I was a little kid!)
