Took the wife, sister and 2 daughters for Mother's Day in Newport, R.I.
We arrived Saturday night and just got back today (Monday). We toured some mansions and went to a nice brunch on Sunday. My wife's favorite (as is most everybody's) is the Breakers... but I like the Chateau Sur Mer pictured above. It was the most decadent of the homes in Newport until the Vanderbilts started building the uber-huge 'cottages' like the Breakers....

This is Carey Mansion, which until recently was being leased in part by Salve Regina University-----and unfortunately has NOT been part of the Preservation Society's toured estates... The mansion is supposedly being renovated by family and I HOPE it becomes a toured property soon.
This is Barnabas Collins' 'house' in the Dark Shadows TV series....

The Breakers (at which my 3-year old whispered to he 7-year old sister: "Let's pretend we live here..." as they ran in the backyard...)

The gates above are probably 50 feet high... and they STLL couldn't keep riff-raff like me out! ;)
Looks like a fine weekend ... :D
Good stuff, def looks like a fun time.
Barnabas picked a damn nice place to live!
Thanks Flower & BL.... it was a great time. The girls had a ball. But then again they could have played with the combo safe in the suite for hours! We got to swin in a heated pool that was 1/2 inside and 1/2 outside (there was a glass wall to swim under to pass through) and the facility had a movie theatre that was all ours for a 5:30pm movie with all the popcorn we could eat. They were very well behaved in the mansions, though at one point my 3 year-old attempted to butt shuffle down the heart-shaped grand staircase at the Rose Cliff mansion which was the site for the Great Gatsby. :o

I had to physically stop her. ;D

What a sweeeeet weekend! Sometimes I forget that places like that exist in the USA. It's so cool to explore these mansions and estates, but it's even better when there's a movie with all you can eat popcorn!

And the movie was..... 'Tangled'. :o And I enjoyed it. Everybody likes to pick which guy I look like most in the tavern scene. ;D
This is really cool. Thank you for sharing those pics with us.
Great stuff!
