Universal Studios created a world within the world for their Monsters to inhabit. Visaria was a place like no other in the world of the 1930' and 40's. Modern cars and telephones co-existed with Gypsy camps and townspeople who could very easily have lived in 1700's.
Towns like Regalberg with Burgermeisters as their leaders and a city council of Lederhosen-clad gentlemen who speak with decidedly German accents, but also are populated by men who dress in modern styles and speak in either American or British English, made the possibility of a Frankenstein , Wolfman or Dracula in such a setting very real to the audience.
The buildings there were very special, too. Not your run of the mill castle. These structures were designed by artists and were placed in countrysides that only exist in fairy tales.
Would today's audiences buy into such a world? I don't know. I would like to think they would. While it may not be practical, a Frankenstein monster loose in that world again would be a delight to watch.
Who knows, maybe someone with more money than brains will try it!
What do you think?
I think you hit the nail right on the proverbial head. I dig that world. Hell, sometimes I wish I lived in it! Don't know if today's moviegoers would buy it or not, though most of 'em sure seem to buy into some outlandish "mainstream" entertainment. If done right, I, for one, would embrace it.
