Let's see... the food, wine and women of São Paulo versus the food, wine and women of Louisville. Oh yeah, I'm sure he's adjusting to SP just fine. ;)

Tuesday will be a big day.  So I better go to bed.  But who is on my hotel TV than our own Dan Roebuck!  He is on a battleship where a turret has exploded.  Looks like a very serious military drama.  Very strange feeling to see him on TV.  Maybe some day he will be in a hotel in some far corner of the world and see me on his TV, rising from a swamp and attacking people!  Oh man, very weird feeling.

Well, this is certainly some kind of strange Twilight Zone moment. I just inadvertently saved the State that I despise the most from being darned eternally, Raymond is watching Dan Roebuck on TV in Brazil, and I am posting on a message board that I am supposed to be AWOL from. Funny, isn't it?

Funny, but not surprising Nicole. You see, the UMA has secret ingredients built deep into it's software. This secret ingredient is very similar to crack cocaine in it's addictive nature. Most members are not even aware of just how many times throughout the day they return to the UMA. And for what? They're not sure themselves. They are like zombies in a sugar mill. Working and toiling day and night at their computers. Posting and posting again. Never really feeling satisfied. Yet, they return in droves all looking for that next fix. They gotta have it Nicole. And I'm sorry to say, you too are a victim of this habitual addiction. Don't fight it Nicole, just sit back and relax. Enjoy it for what it is, and for what it isn't. Don't question it. Don't deny it. It's what your craving. It's what you need Nicole. And you won't find it anywhere else on the web.

Last night was fantastic.  Lots of paparazzi, TV reporters, throngs of people.  I did two interviews, one for MTV and another for a magazine or newspaper.  I was in costume, alongside Mojica and his "brides" from the movie.  It was quite a spectacle.  Then we went into the theater and Mojica lined us up in front of the screen.  We stood behind him as he made a speech that got interrupted by applause several times.  Then we saw the movie.  Fantastic!   It was an incredible phantasmagorical funhouse ride.  There is no way that film could be released with an R rating in the U.S. (and they do intend to seek a U.S. theatrical release).  It will have to be NC-17 or heavily edited.  I am glad I got to see it in its undiluted form!  My scene is brief but very powerful.  I got tons of compliments before and after the screening.  We had a cocktail reception, more pictures, then went to a cast/crew party at a nightclub.  Today and tomorrow will probably be quiet days.  Then Friday we will be guests on a talk show called Altas Horas.  It airs Saturday night, so I won't get to see it.  I think someone will tape it for me.  I'm sure it will be on YouTube within a matter of hours.  Apparently, this is a pretty big show in Brazil, so this is a very important bit of promotion for the film.  Today, someone who has no connection with the film told me everyone in Brazil is talking about this movie.

Even if it's just  a limited one, hopefully one of the art house theaters out in Boston show it so I can go... I'll be looking back at this thread with extreme jealousy if not!  ;D

You can see me a couple times early in the video.  The first guy interviewed is fashion designer Alexandre Herchcovitch, who designed costumes for the film.  Then there is an interview with Mojica and one of the actresses.

If you want to see a few seconds of me from the movie, there is a way to do it.  But you have to work for it!

Go here:

http://www.encarnacaododemonio.com.br/experiencia

It will take you on a long journey.  At the end of that journey, you will see a few seconds of me rising from the swamp.  It took me about 15-20 minutes to get through the "experience."  There's no way to skip forward.  I had fun going through it, though I'm sure it helps if you are really into Coffin Joe.

Oh ... my ... GOSH ... what did I just experience?  The TV show today was H - U - G - E !!!!!!!

I don't know how to begin to describe this.

Altas Horas is one of the biggest shows on Brazilian television.  It is a strange combination of the Tonight Show/David Letterman/Graham Norton and Saturday Night Live.  The set is designed almost like an arena, with the audience in stadium seats surrounding a floor-level stage.  It kind of has a Thunderdome-like quality being surrounded by all those people in those high seats.  The guests alternate between sitting and standing.  The host is always standing, moving around.  There are interviews, questions from the audience, "skits" involving guests and audience members (kind of like Graham Norton's format), and multiple musical guests.  Lots of singing and dancing, audience participation.

The show is only an hour, but taping it took three or four hours.

The entourage included Mojica, his wife, his assistant, the seven actresses playing Coffin Joe's "brides," me, and a translator for me.  We met in a cafe below Mojica's apartment, then loaded into a van.  It took about 45 minutes to get to the Globo network studios.  Once there, Mojica and his wife and assistant went into one dressing room.  The seven brides, me and the translator went into another.  Kind of weird having seven beautiful girls dressing and undressing in front of you, but that's show biz.  I l learned on my first trip to Brazil that you have to leave your shyness at the door and get on with it.

Once we all got into costume (yes we all wore our character costumes), it was hurry up and wait.  And wait.  And wait.

Finally, they ushered us out of the dressing rooms to the backstage area.  Mojica, of course, went on first.  The brides followed him.  My entrance would come later.  I watched the show on a monitor backstage.  Mojica was in costume, being very charismatic.  He had the audience eating out of his hand.  He and his wife did a skit where he pretended that something went wrong and she died.  He was yelling "don't film this!" and "no cameras!" as if a terrible accident had really happened.  Of course, it was all a put-on.  She got up and they hugged, then Mojica went on with the interview.  The brides waited on the side, on the bottom row of the audience "bleachers."

Another actress from a different movie came on.  They showed a clip from her boring film.  Yawn.

Mojica "directed" another skit with this actress, a male audience member and a male band member.  It was a love triangle where the two men kill each other over the girl.  Again, the closest English-language equivalent would be the Graham Norton Show.  If you've seen the kind of skits Norton does with audience members, you will get the idea.

The musical guests included at least two bands.  There was also an acrobatic act.  Mojica and the actress sat on the stage throughout the program, watching and sometimes commenting on the other acts.  Mojica was the star of the show.  It kept coming back to him with skits and more interviews.

My translator was supposed to go on stage with me, but the show producers told him that he was absolutely not allowed on stage!  I had to go out alone.  No translator.  In retrospect, it was the right decision.  Having a translator tagging along would have been lame.  But at the time, it seemed like a disastrous turn of events.

Finally, my big moment came.  The host introduced me and I walked out onto the stage.  Hundreds of people are towering above me in those high stadium seats.  Live music blaring.  Cameras all over.

Of course, the host started talking to me in Portuguese.  I don't know how I did it, but I did most of the interview in Portuguese.  When you're on national TV with millions of people watching, you just do what you got to do.  So I opened my mouth and Portuguese came out.  Don't ask me how.

The host said something, the audience got quiet, and a camera rolled up in front of me.  Scary music started playing.  I knew the host had just asked me to perform as Coffin Joe.  So I did.  I gave a blood-thirsty rant about how everyone would cower in fear before my supreme reign of violence, and they would all be cursed with anguish and pain!

Well, by golly, that crowd went nuts.  They loved it!  They were applauding and going crazy.  I looked over at Mojica and he had the biggest grin on his face.  He was just beaming.  Man, seeing that look on his face made the whole trip worth it.  It was like standup comics who would perform on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, hoping Johnny would give them "the wink" after they finished.  For me, seeing Mojica's grin was like getting "the wink."

Next, the brides and I laid down on the floor of the stage to do a skit.  We played dead while Mojica pretended to "resurrect" us.  Then we rose like zombies.  Well, the girls rose like zombies.  I rose like Coffin Joe.  I lead an assault on Mojica, the "zombie" girls behind me.  We all ganged up on him, acting like we were going to claw him to pieces.  He got up close to a camera and screamed "Nooo! Nooo!" while we clawed at him.  Cut to a commercial.

I sat with the brides for the rest of the show, clapping and semi-dancing to the musical guests.  There was a lot of music.  It was like a gigantic party.

After the show was over, crew people were giving me a "thumbs up."  That actually impressed me a lot.  To those guys, the show is just another day at the office.  I'm sure it takes a lot to excite them.

When it was all finished, we drove back to the cafe beneath Mojica's place.  Mojica was telling people how much he loved my "curse."  I hope that segment ends up on YouTube so I can see what I did.

You know what else Mojica was talking about?  You're not going to believe this.  He was going on and on about non other than - Matt and Nancy Jaycox!

Yes, he loves them!  He could not stop praising the Coffin Joe doll they made.  He was telling everyone about it.  He wants me to give him their contact info.  As I type this, he's probably dreaming about that doll!  I think they are going to have to make him one, or they are liable to get cursed.

Mojica got on the phone, called Dennison Ramalho, and told him to get over there and take me to dinner.  So Dennison came and took me to dinner.  I love Dennison.  He is a great guy with a sweet wife.  We had dinner at Braz, a pizza parlor.  Then we went to Dennison's apartment, where he showed me his prize Exorcismo Negro movie poster.  It was exciting just seeing that poster!  Then Dennison gave me this beautiful Coffin Joe book with tons of photos I have never seen before.  It was published last year for a retrospective on Mojica.  Then Dennison and his wife drove me back to my hotel and said goodbye.  I think he would like to keep me here for a month, and I would like to oblige!  But unfortunately, I must return to Missouri this weekend.

So there you have it.  What a night.  Wow.

Greetings Mr. Castile,
Being new to the UMA and not having had the opportunity to personally meet any of my monster brethren & sisters, I must say this sounds like the coolest thing ever.  Shamedly, I have not yet actually seen any of the Coffin Joe flicks!  Have heard of them for years, but have just recently been thinking of tracking them down.  I will definitely do so in the near future.  In any event, I tip my hat off of my bald head, to you.

Raymond, your long post about Altas Horas was one of the MOST delightful and fun-filled pieces of writing I've had the pleasure to read in many a day.  I'd give a lot to have a recording of that whole show!  Seeing you come on stage and rattle on in Portuguese would be a hoot and a half.  Living the dream, my friend--I hope you are "journaling" and keeping a record of every moment.  This thrill ride is onlly the beginning-- you are well on your way to becoming the toast of Brazilian horror!  Missouri is gonna seem mighty tame.  I'm sure Vincent Price, Missouri's OTHER horror icon, felt the same when he came home to visit.

Doesn't this whole story sound like it has the makings of some foreign-film light comedy or farce? The sort of film Francis Veber would make?

The basic plot is there: Nice guy from small midwestern town is mild-mannered reporter by day in his own country, and is also an international movie star in another? He could have two girlfriends: the Brazilian lingerie super-model who is high-maintenance, and the small-town librarian who would never believe his other life...but whom he secretly loves more...

Yes... yes...

Ray, call me. We should do lunch and figure out how we're gonna pitch this screenplay. Call Danny for pointers!

I'm holding on to this baby, just in case... ;D

Good idea... but really-- shouldn't it be "Ray do Caixao"? or "Re' do Caixao"?

OK, here are some photos.  I didn't take many, unfortunately.  Most of these were taken by Dennison Ramalho.

Here I am in the parking garage, waiting for my cue to enter the theater at the premiere.

They ushered me into this roped-off area where the press could take pictures of me while I posed.

Here I am doing a print interview.

This is Milhem Cortaz, the actor who plays Father Eugenio, a kind of "monk assassin" sworn to kill Zé do Caixão.

Then Mojica entered with his seven "brides" from the film.

I joined them and we all posed for photos.

Here are some nice shots of Mojica and I just standing around in costume.

Then we went inside the theater auditorium for the actual screening.  The movie was showing on seven screens, but we only did a presentation in front of one.

Here I am, waiting to enter.

The cast and crew lined up in front of the screen while Mojica made a speech.  That's Dennison standing next to me in the AC/DC shirt.

Everyone applauded many times.

And then we watched the movie!  I didn't get any photos of the parties afterward.  But there were plenty of cameras going off, so I'm sure photos of the post-screening events will find their way online before long.

I'm slowly building a nice little network of friends in Sao Paulo.

Here is my aforementioned friend, Dennison Ramalho, standing next to me at the premiere.  He is a great guy.  You see, he is even holding my stuff for me, since I can't grip anything with those nails.

Here is my friend Livia Furlan.  She is a lawyer for the Pirelli Tire company.  That's the building where she works behind her.

I think I am in the doghouse with Livia.  I was supposed to meet her Friday, but instead I stayed out until 1:30 a.m. with Mojica and Dennison.  Whoops!  Ah well.

Just as I took this picture, Livia's boss walked up the sidewalk behind her (you can't see her boss in the shot).  Livia had taken a long lunch with me.  Busted!

This is my friend, Henrique, the Glasslite King.

He is a collectible toy dealer.  He is "the man" when it comes to 1980s Glasslite toys like the rare Dracula series.  In the photo above, he is holding a game from that series.  Here are some more pictures of it:

Here are some Glasslite Dracula toys I bought from Henrique:

I only paid for one of the Dracula figures.  Henrique threw in the second figure for free because he is a huge Zé do Caixão fan.  I told him no, no, no, I couldn't.  But he said yes, yes, yes and insisted that I take it.  Then he asked me to autograph a third Glasslite Dracula figure (I told you he is the Glasslite King).  I hated to deface a rare toy, but he insisted!  So I signed it on the back, "To my friend Henry, from Raymond Castile (young Zé do Caixão)."  He was tickled.

I'm also getting pretty friendly with an actor/musician named Rubens Mello.  He has a part in the film as one of Zé's disciples.  When he met me at the premiere, he snuck up behind me and surprised me.  Then he kissed my hand and said, "I love this guy!"  You can't beat that for a greeting.  Mojica's daughter, Lizvamp, took photos of Rubens and I together, but I don't have them.

Here is a picture I took in 2006 that shows Rubens on the right.

So those are the people I like to hang around with in Sao Paulo!

On Paulista Ave., there is a famous park called Trianon.

Mojica used it as a location for Awakening of the Beast.  It is very lush, as you can see in this daylight shot:

Dennison told me it is also famous for being the home of a demon!  People have reported seeing a one-legged black boy who appears and disappears out of nowhere.  I don't think he's supposed to be the ghost of a once-living child.  Dennison said he is a "demon," some kind of mythical figure that exists to cause mischief.  Lots of people have claimed to have encountered him.  But there is a catch - he only comes out at night!

The park is kind of spooky in the daytime, let alone at night.  It has a dense, isolated, jungle-like atmosphere.

So what did I do?  What else.  I went to Trianon Park at night, searching for the demon!  In a rain storm, no less!

Here are the shots I took.  I don't see a demon in any of them.  Those white blobs are not "orbs."  They are rain drops on the lens!

That is a spooky place!  But no demons.  I guess I scared him away.  I hope he didn't follow me home...

To finish up, here are a couple shots of Sao Paulo near my hotel:

Here is a famous art museum on Paulista Ave.  It has a pretty nice collection, including works by Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet, Bosch, and many other top-tier artists.

And finally we have this odd mascot on Paulista Ave.  I'm not sure what he was advertising.  Martial arts lessons?  I got a kick out of seeing him every day.

Raymond, it's very cool that you're making all these connections in Brazil. Your name and your work is getting spread around, you have a pretty friend/potential love interest who is a lawyer, and you can even speak and understand quite a bit of Portuguese. You may laugh now, but you know, one day you may very well become our loss and Brazil's gain...

Congratulations again, Raymond! Você está aparecendo, e não está desaparecendo.

I noticed you and Mojica have different medalions?  Please forgive my ignorance as I have only seen very little of Coffin Joe.  Does he wear different ones in the movies and do the symbols on them mean anything?  Just curious and with all this going on, you have peaked my interest in these movies.

I'm sorry I did not answer this sooner.  Yes, Mojica and I are wearing different medallions.  Mine is just something I bought at a costume shop.  It was the best I could find back in 2004 when I put together my costume.  (Yes, the costume I wore at the premiere was the one I made, not one provided by the studio.)  Mojica is wearing the authentic prop medallion from the film.  Coffin Joe's medallion has changed over the years.  He did not wear a medallion in the first two films.  He started wearing it in the third film, The Strange World of Coffin Joe.  He wore the same medallion in the fourth film, Awakening of the Beast.  The medallion changed in Black Exorcism and changed again (I think) in Hallucinations of a Deranged Mind.  The one he wears in the current film is brand new.

Yeah, he probably doesn't. If I remember correctly, he had one of the old costumes on display at the Zé do Caixão Museum, but the medallion on it was new and looked completely different from those used in the films.

I heard from Livia in Brazil Saturday.  She e-mailed me to tell me she opened a magazine and saw my face inside.  Then she took the subway to work and saw me again!  She took a picture to show me.  This is part of some kind of big display (she called it an "exhibit") they have set up in the subway to promote the film.

I'm so used to these films being virtually unknown outside of Brazil, that the idea of EoE actually getting a theatrical release in our country seems like some kind of dream. But if they do ever show it here in my neck of the woods, have no doubt, I will go dressed in full costume and be the first person in line!

I knew this had to be a joke when they said people were supporting "a candidate no one has ever heard of."  Obviously not me.

My staff will begin the vetting process.  It involves electric knives, hungry rats, a lead pipe and other scientific instruments.

If you're going to leave me in a room with all those things, I'm assuming your staff are expendable, then? Oh, this sounds like a lot of fun!

But on a serious note... has this thread gone off-topic, or what? I should apologize for starting it all with the lunch box thing. Sorry about that. I'll try to keep it focused, from now on.

Now, let's get back to talking about this delightful torture-porn movie that Raymond was in.

Hehehe... Just kidding. Juuust kidding.

How the hell did I miss all this!!!???

Oh Ray, my sincere apologies for being mum on this.  I was away from my computer for a while earlier this month and for some reason just never saw this thread!

I just read the whole thing...and wow.
I am beaming with pride that I KNOW Coffin Joe.

Ray, I know this was a dream come true for you...and what a great story.  How a favorite character inspired an amazing costume which impressed the right person which landed you in the middle of a surreal dream.
Where can you go from here my friend?

You'll always be Coffin Ray to me.  And my friend.

Deliriously happy for you  (and yes, we show folk like to get dressed and undressed in front of each other...)
LOL.

Thanks Professor!  Feel free to get undressed in front of me at your convenience.

Now on to other news...

That show I was on, Altas Horas, will air Sept. 13.  Maybe someone here gets a Brazilian satellite channel that carries it.  If not, no problem.  I'm sure it will be all over YouTube within hours.

I found out that the actress who was on the show plugging her romantic comedy was Alessandra Negrini.  I had never heard of her, but apparently she is a huge star.  Do a Google search and see what I mean.  If you do an image search, you are going to get an eye full.  Guys, don't do it when your wives are watching.

In Portuguese, "Zinho" is a suffix that means "son of." So by calling him Zezinho, they are calling him the son of Zé.

Here are some theater lobby displays.

This is a big floor decal. The shovel looks real, but it is part of the decal. I saw one just like this in the middle of a theater lobby, but I did not get a picture of it. I found this shot on flickr.  It's probably the exact same one I saw.  Looks like the same tiled floor.

Also, I found this photo on the net, though for the life of me, I can't remember where...
