Title: TOP 10 NON-SUPERHERO COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS
Post by: Scary Terry on December 02, 2011, 10:15:06 AM
OK -- the superhero poll was fun -- but there are so many NON superhero comic book characters to consider -- so how about a separate poll?  I'm sticking with American comic books (my list of European/Asian favorites would be quite long) -- and no newspaper strip characters (also a long list). I'll start out.

Dick Briefer's FRANKENSTEIN
Joe Kubert's TARZAN
SNIFFER (from the GA Daredevil comics -- especially the Carl Hubbell-drawn episodes)
Will Eisner's THE SPIRIT
BAT LASH (Cardy/O'Neil/Aragones)
John Stanley's LITTLE LULU
ENEMY ACE (Joe Kubert)
JOHNNY DYNAMITE (Pete Morisi)
MS. TREE (yes, one of my own -- but she paid the rent for 11 years, too)
ZIPPY THE PINHEAD (Bill Griffith)

Well, first there's all the Disneys (I pretty much missed out on Barks during my childhood, and have been catching up on his genius.) So that's:

- Donald Duck, The Nephews, Uncle Scrooge, Mickey, Pluto, Goofy, et al.
- The Losers (Kirby version)
- The Iron Corporal (from Willi Franz & Sam Glanzman's woefully underappreciated Charlton strip, one of the best_war_comics_ever)
- Gilbert Shelton's Wonder Warthog & Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers
- Dr. Graves
- Howard Chaykin's Reuben Flagg
- Archie & the Riverdale gang (esp. Silver Age)
- Lee Falk's The Phantom (if you can sneak in the prose & strip character Tarzan, I'll pick one I first new from comics!)
- The Unknown Soldier (Michelinie/Talaoc version)
- And you betcha, the tough & lovely Michael Tree belongs on this list (thanks again to you & Max, Terry!)

Happy holidays,
-Craig

Mine tend mostly to 50s DC and 80s independant though there are some good stuff going on now.

Tales of the Unexpected (loved this one even before Space Ranger)
Swamp Thing (Alan Moore)
Sandman (Neil Gaimen)
Fables (can't say enough about this one)
Cerebus (many attempts to copy but never equalled)
Capt. Storm (original)
American Flagg (Chaykin's art was equalled by his writing)
Ms. Tree (yes, thank you Terry and Max.  These will always stay in my collection)
House of Mystery (& Secrets) with Cain and Able
Strange Adventures

I'm sure I will add to this as I remember others from other posts.

Craig --

I never read the Disney Duck comics as a kid, so came to Barks as an adult, too.  Great stuff.  Likewise with Stanley's Little Lulu -- and tons of other humor/kid comics.  I jumped straight into the hero/adventure stuff right away and skipped the funny stuff (except MAD, which was required reading).  Love reading it all now -- Herbie, Wilbur, Sniffer, Archie , Sugar & Spike, etc. -- lots of fun and great cartooning.

And for those who haven't posted yet -- you don't HAVE to list Ms. Tree to participate in this poll -- you really don't!

Don't surprised if you see more lol.  It was one of the better ones that decade.  I ran a comic shop in that decade and most of the regulars liked reading it.

Does herbie count as a non-super-hero? He did some amazing things, but wasn't really a "hero". I also occasionally liked Sugar and Spike and Sad Sack, though I was usually laid up in a hospital when I did  ;D

I think Conan the Barbarian might count. He's not really a superhero.

Herbie counts -- only if he's not in his "Fat Fury" guise.

Of course Conan is a non-superhero character.

Conan doesn't wear a costume, have a secret identity or have super powers.  He doesn't fight crime (in fact, he often commits them!). He has none of the qualities one typically expects of a superhero, except he has his own comic book. Not a superhero.

Strictly speaking, Batman is a costumed hero with no super powers -- but it's become accepted to include any comic book costumed character under the "superhero" banner.  If you'd ask DC for a list of their popular superheroes, they'd include Batman.

Mighty Mouse is a "funny animal" -- but also a superhero.  I say he can fit in either category.

Title: Re: TOP 10 NON-SUPERHERO COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS

Mighty Mouse wears a costume, has super mouse powers and fights crime against mice. He may be a cute animal cartoon character, but he's a superhero. He was invented as a Superman spoof.
Title: Re: TOP 10 NON-SUPERHERO COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS
Post by: Hepcat on December 06, 2011, 01:09:18 PM
What do you mean "spoof"? Mighty Mouse is every bit as legitimate a hero as Superman.

I agree. I love Mighty Mouse and have several Castle 8MM film reels. He's much more than a "spoof," but he was created as mini version of Superman. In kindergarten, I had a Mighty Mouse sweatshirt and a jacket with a Mighty Mouse patch on it. I wore that jacket everywhere. Even now I have a Mighty Mouse t-shirt.

This is off the top of my head...
1.) Scrooge McDuck
2.) Donald Duck
3.) Veronica Lodge (my all time comic book girl crush)
4.) Alfred the Butler
5.) Alfred E Newman
6.) Vampirella
7.) Casper the Friendly Ghost (when I was a lil kid)
8.) Melvin the Monster
9.) Barnabas Collins
10.) Conan the Barbarian

I noticed many of these are really adapted characters but I enjoyed their comic book appearances. Likewise, I have to add Huey, Dewey and Louis, Gyro Gearloose and Gladstone Gander form the Duck comics, and note that Bob Hope, Jerry Lewis and Renfrew always made me laugh

If Mighty Mouse isn't a superhero, then neither are Krypto, Streaky, whatever the heck super-horse was called, bat-dog, or Talky Tawny!. (Ok., maybe Talky Tawny wasn't a super-hero, but he hung around with Captain Marvel!!  :) )

whatever the heck super-horse was called, bat-dog,

The super horse was called Comet and was actually a former centaur that magic (Circe?) turned into a full horse.  Not sure where the super powers came from.

The bat dog was called Ace and I have no idea where he came from.

From the hopelessly trivial cache of unable to forget memories.

Ace actually belonged to a friend of Bruce Wayne. Bruce would periodically take care of Ace when the owner was called out of town on a business trip. The reason Ace too wore a mask is that he had very distinctive markings on his head which could without the mask lead Ace to be identified with Bruce.

Unlike Batwoman though, Ace had no problem quickly deducing that Bruce Wayne and Batman were one and the same.

I suspect you may be flouting the spirit of this thread. Some of the characters on your list may be from the movies. Just because there's a comic book adaptation of a movie doesn't turn these movie characters into comic book characters. I mean just because James Bond and Napoleon Solo appeared in comic books doesn't really make them comic book characters per se.

there is no intention of flouting the spirit of this thread. with the exception of sookie stackhouse all the characters first appeared in comics before any other incarnation of that character was seen on film or in tv.
my list is completely legitimate, i choose these characters based on the comic character not the film or tv depiction.

Eric Draven appeared in the crow comic by James O Barr in 1989, the crow film was released in 1994
Eben Oleson, appeared in 30 days of night and was published in 2002 the film was released in 2007
Rick Grimes appeared in the walking dead comic in 2003 the tv show aired in 2010

Sookie stackhouse is the only character that was first  a character in a novel then tv and finally a comic, i could see if you have an issue with this character on my list but i still enjoy the comic which features side stories not based on the television plot lines. the comic is well designed and can stand independently of the show so i feel that she is a legitimate comic character.
i don't  know  who made a rule that you must be a comic character prior to any other depictions in order for the comic character to be legit? but i disagree.

the reason i chose the characters was  because i like the comic character. In  the crow, walking dead, and 30 days of night, the comic characters have some significant difference from their movie or tv counter parts which is why i prefer the comics over many of the shows or films based on the characters.
i know my comics and can defend my list with facts

i have been around comics my whole life. I  grew up with comics and i have gone to comic cons since i was a little girl. i particularly enjoy horror comics.
when i saw this thread i  wanted to participate because i wanted to make of list of characters that i am knowledgeable about.
i would not participate in a thread if i had no idea about comic characters, i don't believe in contributing to a thread if i don't know anything about the topic.

the only impeachable character on my list is sookie.  My knowledge of the characters on my list are based on comics not tv or movies. i know my stuff and if you are going to accuse me of flouting this thread you should be able to back up your claim..
im a comic geek and proud. i am a little insulted by your statement.
it would appear your knowledge of these characters are limited to movies but  my knowledge of these characters  is not.

i generally trust the knowledge of my fellow UMA comrades and would hope that if  i questioned an opinion of a fellow member i would try to research the topic before impeach to their post  :(
i thought this spirit of this thread was fun and sharing interests.... there is nothing wrong with disagreement of debate. You can disagree with my list but my characters are valid all the same

1. Accuse? Impeach? You know you're taking things far too seriously.

2. And I did research. I went directly to an authority on the subject, and have now very quickly learned something more about all the characters you listed. After all, discussion forums are indeed ideal vehicles for the quick sharing of information.

i am happy to hear that there was no malice behind your post, in other forums comic debate and can get heated and fast.  The comic world is pretty dominated by men so most of the time guys don't really take opinions  of a young woman too seriously, so i have to back up opinions with knowledge.   So if i seemed touchy i just move quickly and swiftly to prove i know my comics.  I seem to have these conversations a lot with guys and  there is something to be said about context being lost during text communication.  i will be happy to share more of my comics thanks especially since these forums seem a lot less aggressive compared to many other comic forums i have been to.. :) thats a relief actually this sounds way more fun and i hope i will be able to participate in more comic related conversations in this forum

So I guess it's about time I finally posted my list over which I've been musing for weeks. I've eliminated the characters that were primarily newspaper strip characters, e.g. Dick Tracy, Li'l Abner and Uncle Remus' Brer Rabbit, or the ones that I first encountered through TV cartoon shows, e.g. Howdy Doody, Beany & Cecil, Rocky & Bullwinkle and Deputy Dawg. In no particular order:

Adam Strange
Cave Carson
Enemy Ace
Sea Devils
Tommy Tomorrow of the Planeteers
Fox & the Crow
Felix the Cat
Hot Stuff
Spooky the Tuff Little Ghost
Heckle & Jeckle
Droopy
Uncle Scrooge

I have to agree.  I have been on a few boards (not many) but most of them have flamers on a regular basis.  One thing I have really enjoyed about this place are the people are great and share their love for what brought them together.  Kudos to all.

I'm going to take this thread for a hard left turn here and say this.

The Marvel Monster titles of the 70's are completely magical. Beautiful artwork and some of the greatest short stories ever. Tomb Of Dracula from begining to end, every issue is epic!

Werewolf By Night...The "Marvel Zombie" Marvel's Frankenstein.....Man-Thing.

I don't know what it is about that era, those colors, that art and the stories but to me they are some of the greatest comic books ever printed.

Wanna instant nerdgasm?? Dracula Vs Doctor Strange=EPIC! "Many have tried to defeat Dracula...and they all rot in their tombs like dogs!!!"--Tomb Of Dracula

Marvel does deserve their credit but I have to mention the DCs as well.  House of Mystery.  House of Secrets.  Witching Hour.  Ghosts.  Berni Wrightson.  Neal Adams.  Cain and Abel.  They even had one for the Creature Commandoes.
