Sadly, with all spin offs, one shots, Underground issues, Retro issues and Imagi-Movie issues, I have NO IDEA what issue FAMOUS MONSTERS is on at this point. I'm completely lost. But The Drunken Severed Head is probably the best guy to ask!

I am not a FM subscriber. The new version is not Famous Monsters to me. However I am buying the missing 70's retro issues because they look like the original FM. The article you are looking for is in issue #71 page 58. It is an ad for lithograph pictures of the masks and there is a short article on the mask on page 59. I will say the cover of this issue is amazing. Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman!

Issue #71 is a "retro" issue--a fantasy issue set in the 70s. I have an article in it, but have not yet received my contributor's copy. I can show it to you when I get it.

It's not even a "heart-hearted" attempt of being the old FM on purpose, though there's something in each issue for classic horror fans. Right or wrong, the publisher feels to survive he has to publish something different and more current. In a market with Fangoria, Horror Hound, and Rue Morgue, establishing an identity different from everyone else and surviving in a mass market is a difficult task.
Please continue to check out the retro issues. Everyone involved tries very hard to make it like Forry's FM. Everyone involved knew Forry and loved the classic FM. (Many are same folks working on the "new" FM.)

Agree on what Max said about the new FM vs the old FM. If Jim Warren was still publishing it, and if Forry were still alive and editing it, I think it would probably be more different from the old FM than the current one is... Forry would not have to pay as much homage to the old FM as Kim does... he would be free to keep it current. All of the acrimony over that magazine that has gone on has created expectations in the new one that it address all of the wishes that many fans had for the Ferry FM, all while fighting for a spot in a competitive market, in a field that is quickly becoming marginalized, and to a specialized audience. That's a hard sell without the baggage, and the baggage is weighty!
But personally, I stopped buying monster magazines, except in special cases. I just don't read them. I'd rather watch monster movies.
Toy Ranch is correct, at least in noting that when Forry's FM was being published there was very limited access to classic horror movies except through 8MM Castle Films versions or rare TV airings. Now we have total access to our favorite horror classics on DVD anytime we want. A big part of the original FM's appeal was in reliving our favorite classic horror films through pictures and articles because we didn't own copies of them sitting at home. Now we do. The rest is all just nostalgia for a time that has passed, and that's a hard sell to anyone except for a very small audience.
I like the people involved in the new FM, however, and always wish them the best of luck. I know their heart is in the right place.
I'll have to check out the retro FM issues. My main peeve with FM3.0 is the layout is disorganized and hard on the eyes, and many of the articles read like filler/fluff. Maybe I just miss CFQ, I don't know.
Count, you should go back and read a few of the old FM's ;)
Good lord, I miss Cinefantasique too. I read that for over a decade plus and I kept every copy because they were (and still are) a great reference. That was a completely intellectual magazine that was written for people who were really interested in the film making process for fantastic cinema. It wasn't about the sizzle, the stars or even the nostalgia. It was a nuts and bolts guide to the imaginative film business. It's hard to believe now that it ever existed!

I actually went into a local comic shop and they had it set aside for me already. I have seen it in a couple of other comic shop so I think you should be able to pick it up locally. That is how I got issue #70 just saw it on the stand.

That's why I loved writing for CFQ. I could go all-out and really delve into the nitty-gritty of whatever I was covering. Even when they went monthly and I was mostly working with co-editor Steve Biodrowski, I could get super-detailed on everything from collecting "Star Wars" action figures (for the 20th anniversary issue) to why Mel Brooks SHOULDN'T have made "Dracula: Dead & Loving It." After Fred Clarke passed away and Celeste sold it, it became a horrible, cookie-cutter monstrosity. I'd written for CFQ over a decade, and couldn't even get my phone calls or emails returned by the new editor, who eventually ran it into the ground. Didn't take them but 2 or 3 years to do it, either.
