Title: 90s Vending Machine Creepy Crawlies
Post by: countzackula on October 19, 2011, 11:12:06 AM
Nabbed these suckers back in the mid-nineties out of a vending machine in a Wal-Mart vestibule. Made of rubber...about three inches long...come apart in the mid-sections. I love a good monster bug!

Truth be told, these are bootlegged from the molds used in an "official" toy going around back then called Real Squish Bugs...I perpetually forget the name of the manufacturer, but these bootlegs are unmarked. The official company made a few types of bug monster toys...aside from the squishing ones (you fill 'em with slime), they also made crawling ones and jumping ones...probably more! I still love these things to death...why can't anyone make stuff like this anymore?!

Those are way cool! The kind of bugs that give you nightmares. Reminds of when I was 4 watching TV cartoons on a Saturday seeing a mutant ant and I am not kidding. This thing was bigger than a Matchbox car and I FREAKED. Of course once I got dad downstairs the thing was gone. I think that may have been the reason the Outer Limits Zanti Misfits episode scared the hell outta me.

What an amazing find! I used to love back in the 70's when you could walk into a store, drop 10 to 25 cents into a machine and ewalk out with a crazy bug, rat or bat.

Remember the smell, dude? Nothing smelled as good as a rubber bug from a vending machine!  ;)

I remember putting glow in the dark creepy crawlers from a vending machine capsule into those big brightly coloured hollow plastic Easter eggs that could be separated in two and then giving a six pack egg cartoon full of these to each of my buddies two daughters at Easter in 1989! Very cool.

Yes they do! Here are a couple of pictures I found of the Real Squish Bugs and Real Squirmin' Bugs on the net:
