Ran across this page on the "ABC Movie of the Week" with a list of nearly 250 titles. Man, I must have seen every horror, sci-fi, thriller movie from that series! Everybody remembers "Duel", "The Night Stalker" and "Trilogy of Terror", but who remembers "The Love War", " Dr. Cook's Garden", or "Satan's School for Girls"?

Mike, what memories!
I recall missing a few - including 90% of the NIGHT STALKER premiere! - because it was Boy Scout night...
...but saw many! How great for a poor Trailer Park kid: free new spooky movies (luckily, Mom has always loved this stuff.) I've revisted a few - FER DE LANCE, MOON OF THE WOLF - by way of pd DVD.
And not long after this time, the CBS Late Movie started running recent, and older, classics - like some of Hitch's best.
Good time to have a tv set!
Great week,
-Craig W.

Yeh, that was great! Didn't even have to buy a ticket! I don't suppose ABC still has the broadcast rights to these movies, but it would make great late night programing!
Yeah, they had some good movies on that show. My favorite was The Cat Creature. It was written by Robert Bloch and starred David Hedison the great Gale Sondegaard, Stuart Whitman and John Carradine. My local CW affiliate WWHO53 ran Moon Of The Wolf last year and I managed to make a copy of it for my collection. Thanks for the memories Mike!!
I don't see The Bermuda Depths on that list. Anyone see it on there? Interesting that Trilogy of Terror came at the tail end of the series run. I see a lot of titles that bring back memories.

"Movie of the Week" only ran through '75 and "Depths" first aired in '78 (on ABC). I'm not sure if the MOTW list is a complete one, either.
They do have a "Satan's Triangle", which is another Bermuda Triangle movie.
"Dr. Cook's Garden"----yes! That was Bing Crosby in a rare villian role! I loved those movies, & vividly remember how freaked out & delighted I was at "Trilogy of Terror" the first time I saw it.

And his last (movie) role. The movie was adapted from a play by Ira Levin. Burl Ives played Cook for it's entire Broadway run (6 performances).
Movie Of The Week also premiered Steven Spielberg's early classic Duel, with Dennis Weaver. I believe a remake is in development.
Yeah, for me and my family it was always the CBS late movie.
That's were we saw The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao, Gargoyles, Frogs, Kolchak The Night Stalker (TV series) the Hammer Horror movies, Race with the Devil, The Valley of Gwangi, and many more.

Yes, Prof!
And NIGHT OF THE LEPUS, and SSSSSSSSSSS!, and THE BROTHERHOOD OF SATAN.
And switching genres: NO TIME FOR SARGEANTS, and A NIGHT IN CASABLANCA.

And then in the 1980's they had some original late night series, my favorite being "Adderly" a Canadian made spy story about agent V.I. Adderly who gets demoted to the Department of Miscellaneous Affairs after a villian crushes one of Adderly's hands(left one?) and renders it useless. In each episode Adderly proves that he's just as able as before even with a bum paw. They even did a spoof of "Casablanca" .
"Meek"(where in the world is Winston Rekert?)
Right on Professor !!
The memories that CBS Late Movie clip brought back.Of course,I have most of those movies
in my collection. When a friend once asked about my purchasing such movies I simply
explained that I was buying back my memories !
I remember The Love War, and several other gems of the ABC Movie of the Week. The 1970s were a great time for television sci fi and horror. Remember "The Norliss Tapes"? I recently posted on "The Love War" on my website TheoFantastique. Interested readers can join the discussion here:

I had all but forgotten about "Satan's School for Girls", thanks Mike for bringing a forgotten Monster Memory back to the surface. :D
Mike,
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. The 1970s certainly was a decade for classic television. I remember seeing all of those movies on ABC. You just didn't know what to expect.
Can't remember if it was ABC or CBS, but does anyone know if the `70's TV movie Gargoyles is available on DVD?
Yes it was released on dvd but it is currently out of print and goes for a good bit on e-bay.
Didn't Cornell Wilde star in Gargoyles? I know this is a collectible movie for sure. I sold a VHS on Ebay a few years ago for like $25.
I was just about to sign off and watch Crowhaven Farm with Hope Lange when this thread caught my eye.
As for Satans School for Girls that is all over the place cheap. I loved all those creepy movies on ABC as a kid. Just saw Killdozer and some of these are coming out legit. How Awful about Allen.
I remember "Satan's school for girls." I thought the "Mephisto Waltz," and "Don't go to Sleep" were also part of that series. Weren't they?
Don't go to Sleep really scared me a kid.
Matt
" Something Evil " is an early Steven Spielberg 'made for tv' movie I'd like to track down. Seemed really scary when I first saw it.

Seemed really scary when I first saw it.
"The Dunwich Horror", and "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" did that for me. Those creepy little orange creatures were just too weird at that age.
I have an old copy of " Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark " on vhs and it's STILL scary! Creepy little bastards!

Yeah, i wasnt sure if Gargoyles was ABC, or CBS...thanks for clearing that up, lol.
Also; Very cool finding someone who's even HEARD of that movie. These days, it seems like if you mention Gargoyles, everyone thinks you mean that 90's cartoon, not the kick ass Cornel Wilde movie, lol.
I have the dvd of Gargoyles if anyone wants me to make a copy,pm me.Harry

"Mephisto Waltz" was released theatrically, but looks to have originally been conceived as a TV movie. A "QM" production with a TV cast and director (Paul Wendkos, who's TV movies include "The Legend of Lizzie Borden", "Fear No Evil" and "The Brotherhood of the Bell").
And, on the subject of Made-for-TV horror, I just read that Dark Night of the Scarecrow is being released by Imagine on DVD sometime next year.
I think that movie ranks with the Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and the "Prey" segment of Trilogy of Terror in terms of classic creepy fun.
Anyone know of a dvd or vhs copy of Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark floating around out there for sale? I, in fact never saw the film, but had friends at the time (I was 13) describe it in horrifying detail. No doubt it would be kind of a let down, but I'd still like to see it.
Oh, btw "Gargoyles" was originally broadcast on CBS.

You can usually find a gray market DVD at conventions. I always liked it, but I'm a sucker for 1970's TV horror movies.
Looks like Guillermo Del Toro is producing a remake for 2011.

I got a grey market copy of "Don't be Afraid of the Dark" on ebay a couple of years back, plays great. I loved this movie as a monster-kid, and still do. Those creepy creatures still are creepy. It's definetly worth checking out if you've never seen it.
