Title: Monsterpalooza magazine?
Post by: Illoman on August 09, 2011, 09:56:30 AM
If this has been discussed here I must have missed it. Anyone know anything about it? Are you familiar with the publishers?

Mark Redfield is a certified MonsterKid, and an actor who has produced his own JEKYLL and POE films, among other things; Mike Heisler works in comics, and is also a MonsterKid.

Decent joes.

And both were also among the short-lived Editors of the new FM.

Craig, it looks promising. At nearly $10 I'd have to thumb through it before buying it.

Thanks for the info.

62 pages and no ads sounds promising for a first issue. After that, I hope they get some advertizers so the cover price goes down a bit. I take it this will be quarterly or bimonthly to start?

I'm a bit more familiar with one of the publishers than the other (and thanks for the certification, Craig, although I think there are certain dimensions of "certified" that are best left ignored at this point...).

Monsterpalooza Magazine is actually 96 pages, full color (unless the photo or image is beautiful black and white, 'natch!), and "advert free". We're quarterly, with this issue coming out in a few weeks (No. 1, Autumn 2011) and the next in January. We are considering a "Monsterpalooza Marketplace", sort of an editor's picks of cool merchandise, if there's room in the premiere issue.

Regarding future advertising (and this is one area  where the debate as to whether I'm "certified" or "certifiable" comes into it), we're floating a couple of unusual ideas for advertising in the next issue, because if I could do it, the mag would remain "ad free". Of all the wonderful genre magazines already out there, the one thing I hate about all of them is the visual clutter and often not being able to tell the difference between the content and the ads. Why monster magazine advertisements have to look like Spencer Gifts threw up on your shoes is something I've never understood. (And I'm not talking about retro ads, modern ads.) So call me crazy, I'm going to struggle with keeping ads out of the magazine, but, like I indicated, we're floating some ideas for advertiser money that hasn't been tried yet, exactly, for print.

There's more info on the website, and we'll be adding stuff and things as we get closer to the magazine's debut in mid-September. You can check it out www.monsterpaloozamag.com (http://www.monsterpaloozamag.com)

Glad to be here at The Universal Monster Army and I'm looking forward to diving into the many discussions!

This is great news and I have already contacted Mark by e-mail asking if he would be willing to sell his magazine in our shop here in Tulsa Oklahoma. Can't wait to add this to our growing collection of monster magazines that we offer to our local monster kids. We are a nostolgic Book & Magazine shop here in Tulsa since 1948. We even have a old soda fountain in the back of the store where people have been bringing their children, and now their own children and grandchildren. I have worked here since I was 18 years old, now Iam 52. This is my 34th year here, and I have always made sure that we stock all of the monster magazines out their. (still working on getting Monsters from the Vault in the store, it is about the only one we are missing). I love my job and try to keep the nostalgia of monsters and monster magazines alive for the upcoming generations.

Some news of even more Vincentennial reporting by Raymond : Check out, please, an article Raymond and I co-authored--

http://famousmonstersoffilmland.com/2011/11/22/the-presence-of-price/ (http://famousmonstersoffilmland.com/2011/11/22/the-presence-of-price/)

It features Vincentennial reporting on, and interviews of, a number of Vincent Price fans, such as author Tim Lucas, who played an important part of the St. Louis events. And there's reporting and interviews of  some of Price's co-stars, such as FLY star David Hedison.

It's a last hoorah for this Vincent Price birthday centennial year, and is meant to be a warm and grateful tribute in this chilly Thanksgiving week. (Well, it's chilly here, anyway.)

Some thoughtful remarks (well, except for MY thoughts) and a variety of Price anecdotes. Enjoy.

And again, to buy the great new issue of Monsterpalooza magazine with Raymond's first article, go here:

I just ran across my copy of the premiere issue. It shines like a jewel against other magazines,
with enough outstanding articles to fill two collectors editions. Features include Dracula '31,
Frankenstein '31, Chaney Sr, Vincent Price, Jack Pierce, John Chambers, Hammer horror,
convention coverage, Disney's Haunted Mansion, even a Mike Hill interview; all on super
quality paper. I disagree with Mr Redfield's stance on advertising though. I love ads for
monster stuff. Captain Company raised me that way. It says nothing inside about a publishing
schedule, just copyrighted 2011 by Damfino Media LLC. Was there ever an issue #2? You can
probably guess what's coming ... Damned'f I know, LOL!

I believe I pre-paid for this back in the day at Palooza and never received one.  I never knew it was actually published.

There's a bunch of the program books from the cons.

Well if we're going to go that route, it's best to start at the beginning >
