We are under the topic of TOYS, so what toy weapon would you pull out of the toybox if you were 9 years old and some nasty monster was breaking down your bedroom door?! Or even worse.......under your bed! Let's see some of that childhood weaponry!
I'll start off. I just used this pic in another post on comic ads...it is a Mattel M-16. No batteries involved. Pull the bolt back once and get 9 shots....long or short burst. Pull the bolt back 6 times and get a stream of over 50 continuous shots! And this sucker is LOUD! Manufactured in 1966. One false legend was that the M-16 actually used in Viet Nam was produced by Mattel. Actually the first versions of the military M-16 had plastic grips manufactured by Mattel.....and these grips had the Mattel logo on them. Complaints soon let to removal of the logo on the grips........Buddy
(http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd344/bigbud3/basementtoys074.jpg)
In my mind, it was always an outer-space monster, so it took an outer-space gun to deal with. The trusty REMCO Lost in Space gun. It had a dial you could turn to project a different color light, so even if the alien was purple, he was dead meat!
(I no longer have it, so this is not my pic. Apologies to whoever I pilfered it from a few years ago)
60sthru80s.....Remco sure had the cool toy guns in the 60's! I love that helmet too. Good news...bad news....Good news is that particular Remco gun shows up often on the E-bay....bad news......that helmet, when it does appear, is big bucks! Buddy
Can't go wrong with an U.N.C.L.E. issued deterrent. Great for Thrush Agents, monsters, and the occational sibling.

Best gun in Call of Duty :).
I recall having that Man from U.N.C.L.E. issued to me when I was a kid secret agent. My arsenal also consisted of Agent Zero and Johnny Eagle weaponry along with a lethal attache case. Unfortunately my Dad's trench coat was too big.
The U N C L E gun set is so cool! And is in the same family as the James Bond 007 Attache Case. This is one of the favorites in my collection. The gun is so neat! First....and this is big for us monster killers....it shoots bullets (OK, only plastic ones). Gun has silencer, rifle barrel extension, scope attachment and shoulder rod extension. The REAL treat is the 007 case.....this baby is packed! Case has a hidden barrel for shooting through the closed case.......has a concealed slide out dagger.......and has a secret lock that explodes if case is opened by spies! There's a secret message code book that is also booby trapped! Plus a wallet with international passport, currency, and secret agent calling cards......What monster wouldn't cringe if Junior got one of these for Christmas! Buddy
(http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd344/bigbud3/basementtoys078.jpg)

Had that 007 case -- but no box. Just sold it before moving to MO.
I had both the UNCLE and 007 cases as a kid--all I still have is the "passport" that came w/ the UNCLE set.
That year, the two other things I really wanted (I think I was 7) was a sport jacket w/ an inside pocket where i could keep my gun(which my mother got for me), and a metal cigarette case I could "use" as a two-way radio (from my uncle Dominic).
QuoteHad that 007 case -- but no box. Just sold it before moving to MO.
Not good Terry. You need all the weaponry you can lay hands on......lots of those rascally Missouri Tigers around these parts.....Buddy
That 007 Bond set is freakin awesome, bigbud. The case even has secret buttons and dagger like Bond used in " From Russia With Love" movie. Excuse me while I wipe the drool away. Killer set man, adding that to my wish list. ;D
Yea Creepysfan, it would have been every kid's dream for Christmas, birthday, or any occasion. The box is large and the toy has so many pieces and actions, PLUS it shoots! That was big with me as a kid.......Buddy
I had both the Man from U.N.C.L.E. set and the Bond attache case when I was a kid. I preferred the UNCLE gun to the Bond because it had an actual removable clip. I thought that was really nifty. I loved the attache case because of the hidden knife and the fact that the case fired a bullet. When my friends came over between these two items and my Topper Secret Sam spy gear we were well equipped for any assignment Q or Mr. Waverly gave us.
BTW, my weapons of choice were the Mattel camo tommy gun and the snub nose .38 with shoulder holster. I still have the .38 and holster, but the tommy gun is long gone.
My favorites were the cowboy revolvers, and I had a replica of the colonial flintlock
QuoteI still have the .38 and holster, but the tommy gun is long gone.
Yea RICKH, Long gone to my house! Ha! No,no, only kidding, I didn't swipe yours (but if we had been neighbors I would have tried!). This cool Guerrilla Gun Set by Mattel has the added advantage of including a string pull, cap exploding booby-trap.......no monster sneaks in the room after dark or he gets blown-up and a full bolt-pulls worth of Mattel machine gun! Love, Buddy
(http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd344/bigbud3/basementtoys082.jpg)

Yea MDG, used it as a make believe two-way radio, huh? We got ya figured.......you were the 7 year old with the slicked back hair and black jacket leaning against the back of the school building with a cigarette hangin' from your mouth ......looking to bully us sweet, innocent, bright and studious pupils... Buddy
I'll try to post some pic of the .38 this week. If I can find my M Squad .38 I'll post some pics of that as well.

Anyone got a close-up of the booby trap?
QuoteMy favorites were the cowboy revolvers
I'm with ya! And with the opening of Cowboys and Aliens it is clear that our Western ancestors needed firepower to hold off the monsters too!
Here's a cool favorite of mine. This is the Sniper Pistol by Hubley. This sucker shoots caps and is over 22 inches long! And it sold for only a buck! Buddy

Yep, got one of those bad boys that was sold separately by Mattel. Really a cool toy. You can do the string pull action, or push the bottom button and have several seconds to get away before the booby-trap blew. The slide out metal tray hold 1-5 caps. I guess you'd get a pretty good bang with 5 in it. Directions also show how to set it off while holding it........suicide mission I would guess! Buddy

This gun was actually used in the John Wayne movie "The Green Berets". It is in the scene where John Wayne, angry over the death of one of his fellow Green Berets takes this soldier's M-16 and breaks off the stock by hitting it against a tree. Doubt even the the"Duke" could do that with a real one.

Cool!! Then we'll open a nudist ski resort and change the flag to a marijuana leaf.
My friend Frankenstein73 sold me a white mortar shell from one of his recent garage sale finds and I was able to finish off a Remco Long Range Marine Raider Mortar. This weapon is so cool! It looks as if it should have been part of Remco's Monkey Division line.

Wow! Looks good buddy! Nice & complete. Nothing more satisfying than completing a toy. One less thing lurking in the back of your mind, Now on to the next one!
Hey, toy weapons experts, help me out with this. My older brother used to end all the neighborhood wars with this terrifying bazooka he had. This thing fired out hard plastic projectiles about the size of a pine cone. And when you got hit by one of these , it hurt! Any idea who made this, what it was called, or if anyone has a picture, that would be great. It would have been made sometime around mid to late 60s I believe.
It was probably a Remco Monkey Division or Marine Raider Bazooka similar to the Marine Raider Mortar that Bigbud posted.
;)
QuoteIt looks as if it should have been part of Remco's Monkey Division line.
Hep, I was thinking the same thing. I think Remco did several Marine Raider items but I'm not sure if it was before or after the Monkey Div. stuff.......research might dig up some dates........I'll try to find the time.....Buddy
QuoteNothing more satisfying than completing a toy.
It's all due to you, Franky73, my friend! I think that mortar sat incomplete for maybe 20 years! There wasn't any real rush.........Buddy
Hey moonshadow! I love them Bazookas! I'm bettin' your brother had a Monkey Division Long Range Bazooka by Remco Toys. This baby can really fling em! Check out the second photo.......Remco attached a substantial red metal railing to the bazooka. The cocking mechanism would put a definite hurt on Junior if the railing weren't there. It flies forward with alot of force when firing the bazooka round (bomb). My dog lives in terror!

The Baby would wreak havoc with one of those.
QuoteDid Remco make a Marine Raider variant of the Monkey Division Bazooka as well?
Not sure of the answer to that......I know the Marine Raider line had a tent, mess kit/helmet combo, a helmet canteen, mess kit and pom-pom gun (different colored version of the U S Navy pom-pom gun) and the Marine Raider Mortar. Not sure beyond that......Buddy
The Baby now has a toy bazooka. That said, go to the Madd Arms -Single action airsoft pistol thread to see a toy gun of my own design
Ok, gotta get in on this gun fest. If we're talking about a zombie invasion, a weapon of choice might be the Topper Crime Buster Super Action Police Gun. It was a follow up to the Johnny Seven OMA. It has single shot capability along with a riot gun bullet spray (obviously before Kent State), Smioke Grenade, Police Siren, and a signal missle (Notify your fellow survivors that it's all clear, zombie-wise?)
While I had the Johnny Seven as a kid, I was never aware of this gun back then.

HI Bud, I was on vacation the last week and only now have begun to catch up on the board. Thanks for doing some research on the bazooka! After several decades, it's hard to be sure, but I'm thinking my brother might have had the Marx one. All I can remember is once a neighbor kid got a hold of it and used it on me and the thing really hurt! The shells seemed gigantic, and were of a very solid, hard plastic. I recall them being black but that may not be accurate.
Another item we used as a weapon were those old water-pump rockets. We'd pump those up and then fire them horizontally at one another, rather than launch them into the sky. Those suckers hurt pretty good too!
QuoteAnother item we used as a weapon were those old water-pump rockets. We'd pump those up and then fire them horizontally at one another, rather than launch them into the sky. Those suckers hurt pretty good too!
Yea, I did that horizontal attack on my friends too! What I remember is that my intent was to get them soaked.......only one ending up soaked was me! Buddy
Here's something sure to put a bump on little brother's noggin! This is the Hubley Red Fox Missile. Don't see this one too often, if at all. I don't know if the red missile can be fully appreciated in the photos......this sucker is BIG! Missile is a full 12" long and 3" in width. I believe this dates from the early to mid 60's. I would suggest a mouth shot soon as the monster tries a frightening roar! Buddy

Close! This is an M-1 Carbine BB gun by Crosman Arms......Daisy's rival. My best friend had one of these in the 60's. Sharpest looking BB gun I had ever seen! About mid 90's I spotted this one at a Flea Market. Walked straight over to it and scooped it up knowing that whatever the price I finally negotiated, it would be mine!
Here's the thing about the Crosman M-1 Carbine......looks are deceiving. See the ammo magazine attached to the rifle? Well, it holds plenty of BBs! But!......You see the lever sticking out from the gun? You see the 2 holes in the wood stock in front of that lever? What you do is take off the magazine from the rifle, pour out one....yes one BB, pull the lever back, this slides open the front hole into which you insert your one BB, you close the lever by pulling it back, you push the barrel into the spring tension until it clicks, then you are ready to fire. All that to get off a single shot while the BB gun looks like it would rapid fire for you! Nope! Buddy

Can't reload fast enough to bring down a FOOM.........Buddy
Here's a gun I just picked up. It is a 007 cap pistol, but I am unfamiliar with it's origin. Very similar to a Remco Hamilton Invader/ Okinawa pistol, but has different cap firing mechanism, front sight, and barrel silencer. The aqua blue on the receiver and silencer is a very striking color. 2nd photo compares it to the Hamilton gun...Buddy

I like the Lone Ranger set! Is that by Mattel? What year?
???
If it is swell it is Mattel....and brother it was SWELL.....the rifle would eject the spent silver shell and the pistol was a Fanner 50.
I had it during the late 60's early 70's if I remember right....
I used to fill my parents living room with cap smoke so thick you had to open the door to let it out....
I wish I still had that set.....
Very nice set Masked Man. If you are into the Lone Ranger, we have a LR thread floating around here somewhere. Buddy
Here's a cool Marx Daniel Boone rifle playset. Longrifle shoots caps, has a real wood ramrod, and a storage area in the stock (mine is missing the door, but I'll find one yet!). Comes with a powder horn, canteen, Official Club button, and Official Wilderness Scout Booklet. All on a cool card that measures 35" long! Hard to believe it sold for only $1.99! Buddy

Man, I just LOVE toys from that era...............you know, back when kids still had some imagination and kept a degree of innocence past their 4th birthday.
I still think there are plenty of old West monsters to put down, so here's the Rifleman Flip Special. This is really a beautiful toy gun. Produced by Hubley in 1959. Every kid that watched the Rifleman with Chuck Conners wanted one of these babies!

Yea, me too! I only had to wait 30 some years to get one. Yet again, if I remember right, the Mattel Shootin Shell guns were my big thing. Cap guns, even as cool as the Rifleman rifle, didn't do more than go "Pop". To go "Pop" and actually shoot a plastic bullet was an instant magnet to me.......Buddy
They don't make great toys like that anymore.
Buddy I've got a toy gun question for you. Didn't Mattel put out a line of western style secret agent guns sort of in the style of the Wild Wild West? I know the modern spy line was Secret Agent Zero M.
Hey ya Rickh, I believe Mattel had the popular Agent Zero spy type guns and did a Western off-shoot. The spy stuff was Agent Zero M and the Western stuff was Agent Zero W. Agent Zero W was abit later than many of the other Fanner type guns, probably mid to late 60's. I remember the Agent Zero W pistol to be a Fanner 50 with imitation walnut grips......very different look from other Fanners. Mattel put out many variations of the Fanner......Smoking, revolving cylinder, shootin' shell, and in different themes, Ramrod, Rango, Lone Ranger, Wild Land, Chuck Conners Cowboy in Africa, and one of my favorites the Planet of the Apes Fanner 50. All great guns........second only to Mattel's incredible Fanner 45.......Buddy
Thanks Buddy! I've looked for that western spy variation, but couldn't remember the name.
Rick, I'd hold out for the Planet of the Apes Fanner 50......that one is just plain special. It is bronzed and is super cool.....so is the POTA Mattel tommy gun......Buddy
I saw one last night while I w as searching for the Zero W guns. You are right, it looked awesome.
We've done some spy stuff, a pioneer long rifle, cowboy rods, and some Viet Nam and WWII shooters.....so what about them nasty bugeyed critters that come a knockin' at our spaceship door...I mean hatch!?
Here's one of my all time favorites....It is both amazing and disappointing at the same time. This is a Marx Tom Corbett Atomic Rifle. It was produced in the '50s. The design is so incredibly beautiful! It has futuristic elements combined with the suggestion of a primitive blunderbuss rifle. Incredible! The disappointment? The fact this rifle is only a clicker gun. Pull the trigger and it makes a sound not unlike one of those metal clicker frogs (The Longest Day). An area of red and white strips above the trigger moves with the trigger too.

Yes! Those big ears will definitely be injured by the mighty "click" of the Tom Corbett Atomic Rifle! Buddy
bigbud - are all the samples you posted from your collection? If so, you've got some great examples!
The Tom Corbett rifle is a thing of beauty, all right.
I "think" I had the Rifleman rifle - the big circular lever seems real familiar...
ChrisW, Yea, they be mine. Still hoping more UMAers will post their gun pics. I know we're all packin'!
I didn't intentionally build a toy guy collection, but could never turn one down when I found a gun at an auction or estate sale. The large loop wasn't only used on the Rifleman rifle. Marx put out one called the Cap Shooting Spinner Rifle, and I've seen others. Buddy
Does anyone have any vintage cap six guns in which rolls of caps can be shot off by means of the revolving mechanism?
???

QuoteNothing can stop the Saucermen!!!!! Except, maybe a flashlight with strong batteries
Ha Ha! Mord! I got your Saucermen right in my sights........cause This is the Marx Official Captain Space Solar Scout Atomic Ray Gun! Powered by a powerful flashlight! The Search Ray Unit sends out a beam of light that can be changed from red to green to white! Plus the ray gun's muzzle flashes a beam of light described on the box as the destroyer ray unit! Bug-eyed Saucermen are doomed.......doomed I say! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha! Love, Buddy

OK, Buddy, I already see their little green arms up in the air in a gesture of surrender. Have mercy on them, their only weapon is a tiny space-age pitchfork. BTW, that's one amazing weapon!!!
QuoteI gotta invade your space and see your collection for real sometime, Bud!
Terry.......no doubt we'll get together in the future. Basement is a total wreck for last couple of days. Found one box with a lid that was imploding due to weight on it and things just snowballed from there! Comics, toys, musical instruments, magazines, and me everywhere! Buddy
That atomic ray gun is awesome! I'd run all around the house with it, if I had one!
Anybody got a picture of the Planet of the Apes rifle from the early 70s? I had one but sadly it has gone to the big toy chest in the sky. As I recall it had a cylindrical magazine. It was from Mattel, and made a loud crack when you fired.
Buddy, that is ANOTHER incredible toy!! You're right when you say this is the finest era in toymaking. What I love most beside the cool designs is the way the toymakers played to the naivete and innocence of their target audience. It struck me as I looked at the packaging........
"CAPTAIN SPACE, SOLAR SCOUT" "ATOMIC RAY GUN" "SUPER BEAM"
Kids today would roll their eyes at that kind of campy writ, but back then it comported perfectly with their mid century sensibilities. The innocence and ingenuousness of the kids for whom this was created is revealed in the manner it was advertised. A 10 year old today is so very far removed (and sadly so) from what a 10 year old was in the late 50s and early 60s.

Naw.......Gary, ya can't be too down on today's kids. They are apart of their environment for sure, but the parents have alot to say about that environment. I think of you as an example....... doesn't matter the time period, your kids will grow up with the best of love and family. That can be hoped of any kid in any era. I'm not down on the kids of today, I just realize that childhood innocence is much shorter-lived than it used to be. The media cocoon we live in exposes them to more than we would like, sooner than we would like it. It's a shame.
Gary.....simple solution......you all come to Kansas......we move everyone into the basement.......no TV, no radio, no computer.........we play in the old toys, read old comics and magazines, and only come up if UPS has an E-bay toy delivery......oh....wait.....no computer= no more toys.......this may not work out.....Buddy

I bought one of those carbines way back in 1969 or so and still have it (and the box it came in). If you can only load one BB at a time, then something is wrong with it. The internal magazine holds 23 BBs. Make sure the barrel is tilted upwards when you pull the slide handle back and pour the BBs in the hole.
I've been looking for one of my old monster killers for years but haven't found one. It was a fullsize police-type revolver made out of black plastic. It came with five silver/grey plastic bullets that you loaded into the cylinder from the front. You pushed a bullet in against a spring in the chamber, then turned the cylinder to the next chamber and the front of the revolver frame held the bullets in place until you pulled the trigger and exposed a loaded chamber to the open barrel. We had several of these guns, and quickly lost the bullets, so we cut down pieces of crayons to the right length and made new bullets. Only problem was when a shot missed and hit the wall it left colorful evidence for our parents to find. :)
Anyone know who made these revolvers or what they were called? I think they were like $1 at Kresges or Murphy's stores in Pittsburgh.
Bruzilla.......you mean I can load 23 BBs into that little hole rather than just one? I haven't tried that. Sure it won't fire 23 BBs with one shot? That wouldn't be cool. I don't usually play with this stuff, but I might load 4 or 5 BBs to see what happens. But again, the magazine has no function on the Crossman M-1 but to store BBs, the BBs inside the magazine have no path to the gun barrel what-so-ever......Buddy
Bruzilla! Thanks for putting me right on the M-1. That internal magazine make alot of sense. Now I know! Buddy

Nope....... no rifle, but I got the Planet of the Apes Tommy gun. It is super neat-o! The finish on the POTA weapons by Mattel is very special. The bronze and antiquated painted finish was only used on these guns, and it's a knockout! Also, unlike all the other Mattel Tommy guns, the POTA gun does not shoot caps. The cap loading door usually found on other Mattel Tommy guns does not open, it is molded to the gun's magazine.............

Love guns. I seem to have an overflow of them. I keep them in giant glass jars with lids, like candy jars. I dont have any still in their original boxes. i just come across them at antique stores or the like, and feel compelled to make it/them MINE :)
Don't you think its a bummer how all the new cap guns are plastic / junkie , poorly made and have stupid brightly colored plastic tips on the end of the gun? they are so ugly and boring! ugh.
I buy " ammo" (modern, like the cheap rolls from walmart or the drugstore ), and try to makeshift "load" my old metal cap guns with the rolls.. it doesnt work that well. The MPC (Multiple
Products Corporation) logo was pretty much used consistently on their items from the 1950's to the end (and is still on some of the re-issue stuff), so no that wouldn't be the case... I usually say "Multiple Toymakers, aka MPC". Without packaging some of their stuff can be pretty hard to date.
What can be annoying is much wishful thinking (or deceit, with eBay sellers) when they say "MPC=Marx Products Corporation" (NOT the case,

Yes, caps have probably been dumbed down along with everything else. Let's see now:
1. Diet pop and caffeine free colas.
2. Decaffeinated coffee.
3. Sugar free gum.
4. Mild and light/lite cigarettes.
5. Light/lite beer.
6. Low sodium Ritz and other crackers.
7. Light potato chips.
8. Light/low salad dressings, cold cuts etc.
9. Toys that fire projectiles are long banned.
10. Metal lunch boxes for kids have also been banned.
11. Cartoons that were already censored for sexual content by the Motion Picture Association have been further censored for violence/racism for TV.
It is to scream. Everything's been dumbed down to hell.

Here's a very cool aerial cannon. One of those shoot-your-eye-out toys. It was produced by Harvill manufacturing. I would date it at late 50's or early 60's. The cannon is all metal, with plastic projectiles. Cannon barrel is 12" long. 2 metal wheels are turned for side-to-side movement and elevation. Buddy

So very true, Mord. But I think in this "new" world you have to survive eager lawyers and parents just as eager to point a finger of blame at anyone but themselves.
Yes, and those very same parents are the ones that closet their kids in front of the TV because of their paranoia for the great outdoors. Then when these kids somehow still dare to give vent to their youthful exuberance/enthusiasm, the parents eagerly embrace some quack's diagnosis of their kids as hyperactive and drug them with Ritalin. And of course it's not surprising that these modern parents so eagerly embrace drugging their kids after a lifetime of abusing tobacco, alcohol, LSD, cannabis, valium and Prozac themselves. But of course they seek to protect their children from the "deleterious" effects of sugar and have their kids ingest chemical sweeteners such as Aspartame, Nutra-Sweet and saccharin instead. Twould appear that cancer doesn't rank high up as an evil in the minds of these parents.
Like I say, it is to scream....

Hey Bud!
I really like that Marx secret agent gun. I always loved the Marx guns. I remember having a Marx Luger and army carbine when amongst my armory when I was a kid.
Thanks for the pics!
Hi ya Rickh! I know the items you mention. In fact my holy grail is the German helmet on the card with the luger. I rode 5 miles on my bike to buy that at Montgomery Wards as a kid. Have NEVER seen that carded combination set since. One has to be out there. I think afew years ago someone found cases of the luger (alone) on the card ....I've got that, and the helmet shows up all the time loose. Buddy
Bud, look how far ahead the toy manufacturers were...........
SCIENCE : DISCOVERIES
New Gun Shoots Around Corners
Associated Press 12.15.03
SHOHAM FIRING RANGE, Israel -- Veterans of Israeli anti-terror units demonstrated a new gun Monday that can fire at a target from around the corner, making it particularly effective in urban combat.
Israel plans to start using the weapon next week, U.S. forces already have begun training with it and U.S. SWAT and police teams have expressed interest in purchasing it, Amos Golan, the device's developer, said at a demonstration Monday at a firing range near Tel Aviv.
"The Americans are very interested in this," Golan said. "I believe from what I have seen and heard that it can be a big success in Iraq because the Americans are dealing with an urban area there."
The U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv had no immediate comment.
Golan thought of the idea for the weapon after years of pondering a failed Israeli army operation in the West Bank during the first Palestinian uprising in the late 1980s. Several Israeli soldiers were wounded when they stormed a house through the door and were hit by automatic fire shot from inside, Golan said.
An Israeli-American company, Coral Gables, Florida-based Corner Shot Holdings, showed how the new weapon can be fired through an exploded doorway around the corner into a house, or from a hall into a room. A soldier sees the target on a small TV screen mounted on the barrel of the gun.
Armies from 15 countries are testing the system, said Golan, a former deputy commander of Israel's anti-terror unit.
The system is the only weapon that allows the user to stay safe around a corner and away from a target, Golan said.
The device swivels at the middle, 63 degrees to the left or right, with the stock, trigger and the small screen at the hand-held end. The entire firing mechanism, fitted with a pistol that sits over a mini-camera with a zoom lens, is located at the front end.
A lever positioned under the stock allows the user to quickly move the firing end to another position to better focus on the target.
The development of the idea took three years, and sales began three months ago. The weapon system costs between $3,000 and $5,000, depending on the components.
The device can be fitted with different kinds of pistols, including the Beretta 92, which is used by the U.S. Army, the Glock and the Colt. It also can be adapted to fit an M-16 rifle or tear-gas launcher.
The camera can view between 200 and 400 yards, depending on the model. Accessories include an infrared laser illuminator, rubber bullet launcher, various lenses and a silencer. A video-out socket allows the shooter to film action in a room around the corner and transmit the images to commanders far away.
The mechanism has been patented in the United States and will be sold only to official government agencies, Golan said.
Hi ya Gary! Yea that sure sounds like "The Gun That Shoots Around Corners". Ammo might be alittle different.........Buddy

I posted this pic a long time ago, but I thought you might get a kick out of it. You can see my German helmet and the carbine I mentioned earlier. I wasn't a Nazi sympathizer, we won't have that here in Western Kentucky, but I sure thought the helmet was cool! It also came in handy when we played war...made it easy to spot the enemy. My favorite helmet was the Monkey Division helmet with the pull down visor and radio earphones, you can see it on the coat tree behind me. You can also see some of my armory on the left. My dad made that gun rack for me. I've still got several of the guns.

Now that's a cool picture! Monster models, airplane models, cap guns and helmets. I remember thinking the German helmet I had was especially cool because we neighborhood kids always divided up for our "wars" and the German helmet separated my head gear from the other generic helmets. Hey, I've eyed that aluminum space helmet several times on E-bay. That's pretty nifty too! Buddy
Yeah, I've looked at the space helmet on ebay several times. I would like to own one again. I did several drawings and paintings that incorporated that space helmet back in my college art classes. I loved its simple design.
I love Dragnet stuff, and this shotgun is one of the best of the Dragnet products. It is fully 34" long and breaks in the middle for the 2 shotgun shells. Metal trigger apparatus swings down to load caps. The box is a super treat! Very colorful! Dated 1955. Buddy

RE: German helmets. When I was a kid a friend of my dad's gave me his war mementos - German helmet, belt buckle, Iron Cross, Swastika arm band and a number of pins. The buckle had what I swear was blood on it, and of course that's how I described it when I showed it to the kids in school. I wore that helmet (which I think is a firefighter's helmet minus the crest) many times playing war in a field by our house.
Everything except the Iron Cross and helmet were lost when our house was flooded in '72...

Few things were more annoying to the straightlaced than firing off caps and Wyatt Earp with his radio serial, TV show and comic books from several publishers ranks way up there in the pantheon of cowboy stars. I know Topper Toys, the maker of the Johnny 7 O.M.A., had a variant color of the J-7 helmet recast in a blue color to match the Johnny Space Mobile X-7 console toy, such appears on the Space Mobile box and some dealer literature. Uncertain if such ever made it beyond the prototype stage.
Makes one wonder if there had been plans for a black J-7 helmet for the Crime Buster multi-rifle or royal blue helmet for the Screaming Mee Mee-e rifle-pistol set.

Complaints soon let to removal of the logo on the grips.

Well done Hep! The sound of that thing firing is amazing.......more so in person. And loud! A great toy gun. I remember my best friend came over with a Marx B A R which was battery powered. He could pull the trigger and it would Bap-Bap-Bap as long as he held it down. Unfortunately my brother and I had bolt pull Mattel machine guns (not the Maurauder). We were obviously outgunned. He won several of the neighborhood "Wars"..........Buddy
Here is an Ideal Ramar of the Jungle bolt-action rifle. This dates to mid-late 1950's. I'm not totally familiar with Ramar, but know it was a TV series in the 50's....Jungle Jim type stuff. This rifle took me awhile to track down many years ago. Difficult to find in it's cardboard carry case, with wall hanger. What sold me on this rifle was finding it with the front sights intact. They are made of soft pliable rubber and can easily fall off, harden and break off, or in the case of little brother, be chewed off. Rifle is a full 38" long........Buddy

WoW!....Those are some amazing guns! The Atomic Disinegrator gun is definitely my favorite, with its dial for power. What are the dates on these?
WOW Bobby,... I'm speechless! These are works of art! Love the graphics on the Helium gun and the Atom Ray gun is pretty sick, too! What would you estimate such a collection might be worth in today's market??
Those are fantastic
They range in age from the 1930's - the 1960's. Most of those are pre-war. The Hubley Atomic Disintegrator (with the dial) is from the 50's. The rarest is probably the last one, the Spinray. When you pull the trigger, the metal blade on the end spins around.
As far as value in today's market? I dunno, I don't really pay attention to that market. I converted my rayguns, rocket ships, and most of my robots into monster toys.

Slayer (the rare album "Yer Bleedin' Heart: Slayer's tribute to Hank Williams" of course) blasting on the speakers of an immaculately restored Cadillac hearse. In the back off the hearse, a gas powered blender for making quart sized Margaritas--or even better--absinthe smoothies!
Fishing? Who the 'ell wants to go fishing?
I can totally see this.
slayer , hank williams , hearse , tiki torches, & me , in a directors chair. . !!! Yessssss!!! ;D
mmmm.. margaritas and absinthe smoothies. .

Here's my Mattel Fanner 50 Shootin' Shell Pistol. What a cool toy! This was back before every mommy and daddy sued the toy company when little Johnny shot his sister in the arm and she cried. Little draw-string pouch holds the two-part shells. This pistol dates from late 50's-early 60's. I've often heard sellers or owners of this gun point to the hole in the handle and remark that something is missing. Actually the hole is a bullet loader for assembling the two-part bullets......Buddy

I had a Fanner 50 IN the 50s! (bettin it's a .45 though). Complete with Greenie Stickem' caps and those little two piece bullets. I also had a belt buckle Derringer that used Greenies. Wow the stuff toy companies made in those good old days. Thanks for the memories BigBuddy!

Even 58 would work for me.........I got a TON of old toys from my Uncle Robert when I was a kid in 1970 and we moved into his boyhood home. Robert was my dad's youngest brother, and we bought my grandfather's house in 1970 and moved in. The attic was FULL of old toys and comics!that were Robert's. He was about 12 years older than me, and that would put it in the right age range. As soon as I saw it I recognized it, and when I saw the view on the box of how the shells loaded there was no doubt this was my gun!
I remember having 007's Astin Martin from "Goldfinger"---it was a wired remote, and even had an ejector seat. I got it for Christmas back in the 60s, and my brother broke it the next day....it sat in my dad's workshop for years, before I lost track of it.....just thinking that it would cost MIB makes me cry....
Bizarro Jeff
Jeff, What you describe is the Japanese made M101 Aston Martin DB5. It is usually credited as being produced by Durham Industiries. There were 2 great tin battery op 007 Astons produced. The more common battery tin Aston is by Gilbert. Both were made in the 60's, both are valuable, but only the M101 is wire remote. M101 is far more difficult to come by.......best go check your Dad's workbench again. And bring you thoughts and comments over to the new BOND..JAMES BOND thread........Buddy

BB guns and pellet guns were the thing back then. I had a pistol that worked off a CO2 cartridge. That was really nice, no chocking just pullthe trigger till the cartridge ran out of gas.........
Here's a Crosman pellet gun from the 60's. I keep this guy stashed away cause it is downright spooky. It's weight and looks are exactly those of the 38 issued to federal law enforcement back at that time. It was used extensively for training. You carry this bad-boy around and folks would scatter.......Scatter. That's why I keep it buried in the basement. As a kid I wanted this type of item in the worse way, as an adult I readily see the risk of such a true replica. A great item, but definitely on the fringe in my toy collection. Buddy

So today is Sunday, thoughts of quiet, peace, tranquility and 50 cal. belt fed machine guns. This is, in my opinion, the epitome of toy gun backyard warfare...this is the Deluxe Reading Defender Dan. This huge tripod machine gun was put out in 1964 by the Deluxe Reading Corp. It was one of the "over the freezer case" toys found at the grocery store. Defender Dan elevates with chrome adjustment wheels, has red barrel tip flasher that pumps in-and-out, chromed barrel, large front and rear sights, and a belt of large white bullets that feed through the machine gun as you fire. And yes the bullets do fire out the barrel! Really a magnificent toy gun! Will definitely keep the Scatter from the door.......Ha!

That .50 cal machine gun is a thing of beauty! What every red blooded American boy (no matter what age) wants and needs!
I remember the over the freezer case toys that showed up in our local small town grocery store back in the early 60's. My mom and dad bought me a Jungle Jim play set with the pith helmet and guns back in the day.
Hi Rickh, I have heard of that set, but only seen parts of it. Deluxe Reading really put out toys we kids wanted....and wanted bad!
Man, that's a thing of beauty!
Yea....beauty and function....where's Scatter?
Are you kidding, he's hiding under the bed by now.

:)
Quote from: bigbud on August 19, 2012, 03:41:53 PMDeluxe Reading really put out toys we kids wanted....and wanted bad!
I agree! Part of that though was due to the way they were marketed, in grocery stores and supermarkets where you would see them every week while tagging along while your mother did her shopping! And you could therefore point it out to her so she knew exactly the one you wanted and then pester her about it every week, unlike traditional toy stores or aisles where your mother could only reluctantly be lured. Moreover, the toys were above the freezer case and thus safely away from little hands which could damage the toys/packaging. Pure genius!
;)
I have seen the old Deluxe Reading sales displays for the above freezer toys. They are extremely elaborate and capable of driving a kid to hysterics! I don't remember or know how the toys were exactly bought. Did the mother ask for the toy at checkout...that would create jammed lines. Did the mom have to find a store worker to carry the toy (usually in a large box) to the front and to the car? Were the actual toys stored on the freezer cases or in the back stock room? Bud

Given that no batteries are required, I'm guessing that it must be powered by pulling that lever. How long would the subsequent burst of firing last?

Pointin' at you, Scatter! Duck!
Sometimes them nasties come crawlin', sometimes crashin' right through town, and sometimes from the sky in them round saucer shaped thingies! Dang Buddy, another cool set ... are toy guns what you have most of?
No... I don't think so, but toy guns are the area of collecting I am most interested in. If I were a real serious toy gun collector there would be a problem....the cowboy guns alone could keep me scramblin' for years! Comics were my main thing, but those days are gone. The collection funded early retirement, and comics are no longer easy to find...the good ones. Everyone knows they have great value, while at the same time few understand condition is everything. Got tired of all that. Buddy
I can't even imagine what your collection would look like if you were a "real serious toy gun collector". I mean, could you even find a house big enough to contain them all. One thing's for sure, it would be very well protected.

Yes, everybody who finds an old comic in an attic thinks that it's NM because the cover isn't completely detached, and accordingly they think it's "worth" the highest price.

QuoteYes, everybody who finds an old comic in an attic thinks that it's NM because the cover isn't completely detached, and accordingly they think it's "worth" the highest price.
The words that set off an alarm with me during a conversation were, "The comics are in great shape
for their age". I remember bringing along a truly NM Golden Age comic on one trip just to show the people with the "great shape" comics that a comic CAN be in just-printed condition no matter what it's age. And to point out that their 20 year newer comics were rags in comparison. Never had much effect....."CBG says $400 mint condition, I want $400....it's rare!....try to find another one!" I always did, or went without. I often found that dealing with the most knowlegable comic dealer was easier than the lady that found her son's comics stashed in a top closet shelf.

Yes, the annoying old great shape for its age expression. Worse yet was the "Well its mint for its age" statement. It's as if they all become used car dealers as soon as they get their hands on a comic.
::)
And Hep....how about when the deal has gone down and they lay the " I'm so glad they are going to someone who is a collector and not a dealer" line of junk on you. That, after having bargained like a used car dealer to squeeze every available penny for the comics. They have little interest, little knowledge and no honest sentimentality for the books what-so-ever....just a hand stretched out saying give me, give me, give me........and I'm suppose to believe my being a collector does their generous little hearts good....Ha!

Oh but they really are glad they sold whatever to a collector and not a dealer! Had they sold the item to a dealer, they know the dealer must think he can realize an even higher price for the thing and that's a thought they cannot abide because it means that they did not squeeze the very last penny out of it which was their only interest.
And I always hate that the first question that comes out of the mouths of the great unwashed when they see a collection of cool stuff is "How much is all this stuff worth?"
"What the bloody hell does that matter?" is always my instant response. "It's not about the money to me. And I'm not selling it anyway."

This is for the flying monsters.....will knock em right out of the sky, or give em a good fright just having it pointed at em! This is the Maco Anti Aircraft Gun and Helmet Set. I'd date it to late 50's-early 60's. This thing is big! With little doubt I can say there can't be many of these around...Though the machine gun is plastic with metal barrel, and the cone type base is good solid plastic, the center pole is a thick rolled cardboard and the protective L-shaped armour surrounding the machine gun is of a super thin plastic (very similar to the thin plastic of many Halloween masks). That an example of this gun is complete is amazing. One play-time would do this toy in! It's that fragile. But man, does it ever display well! And it shoots blue plastic bullets from the blue magazine attached to the side of the machine gun. Buddy

Here's the bad-boy most of us remember as the backyard weapon of choice....if Mom would buy us one. This is the Deluxe Reading/Topper Toys Johnny Seven OMA (One Man Army). Even Sinbad, the crazy mailman in Jingle All The Way, wanted one. The pistol detaches and fires caps.....it fires white bullets....all kinds of bombs and grenades.....and has a pull back bolt so OMA rat-a-tats like a Mattel tommy gun. The bi-pod folds and secures under the barrel. Very cool.......Also included is a cardboard tank to set up....yea, right, we didn't need no cardboard tank when little brother was such a great target! Johnny Seven is dated 1964 and was THE top selling boy toy of that year.........

'Nuff said! Putting these right in the supermarket above the frozen vegetables where both you and your mother would see them every week was absolute marketing genius on the part of Topper.

Does anyone remember whether they were also sold in the traditional mom and pop toy stores of the time?
???
QuoteDoes anyone remember whether they were also sold in the traditional mom and pop toy stores of the time?
Now that would take some research. Actually, being one of the Topper Toys (Deluxe Reading still refered to on the box) I thought that Johnny Seven OMA was strickly a Sears/Wards/Dept. store item. Buddy
I know that supermarkets started out as Deluxe Reading's market niche. Perhaps the company broadened its marketing horizons at about the same time it changed its name to Topper.

If monsters come knocking at your door, and you're fresh out of bullets or expensive weapons to deal with the threat, try these! Blow the monsters up with these cool Werewolf Firecrackers from the 1950's! Guaranteed to make your zombies dance (and blow up).
I found these at a holiday collector group this past Spring. I really liked the artwork!

If explosives aren't your thing, you could always mow down a zombie horde with one of these bad boys. I had one of these when I was a kid, but it got broken. About 6 or 7 years ago I picked this one up at a garage sale. It was the same one I has as a kid. It's marked Carolina Enterprises and Empire Plastics (who made a bunch of old Halloween plastic stuff). Stamped 1978.

Thanks bigbud....I took these pics of the firecrackers back in April this year....A couple months later I saw that someone had an old advertising magazine page on eBay featuring the same artwork these firecrackers. It was in bad shape, so I didn't bid on it.

Little draw-string pouch holds the two-part shells. This pistol dates from late 50's-early 60's. I've often heard sellers or owners of this gun point to the hole in the handle and remark that something is missing. Actually the hole is a bullet loader for assembling the two-part bullets......Buddy

Here's a neat gun....the Star Trek Jet Disc Tracer Scope. Who doesn't love shooting those flat, round discs all over the place? The Tracer Scope is by Rayline Toys and is from 1968. Man, LOVE that Trek gun Buddy!! I'm always amazed that you manage to find so many cool toys in their original packaging. Are the majority of these New old-stock warehouse finds from decades ago that were kept by collectors? Because I can't imagine there could be anything like this EVER popping up these days. Who's got a warehouse these days that hasn't been gone through since 1966?
Scatter....do you recall Connor MacLeod, The Highlander. There's the great scene where the lady detective is allowed into his secret collection room filled with wonderful condition antiqueties . She is amazed. Well I'm Bud MacBortner, The Flatlander (Kansas). I've snatched these toys up as I've passed through time....and as food has passed through me.....ha!
So that's it! Amazing collection Flatlander!!
Here's something to fend off dragons, Huns, and vikings (I think). This is a Marx Medieval Knights Armour Set from about 1955. I can see a kid putting one of these suits of armour on, but most of the neighborhood friends would have cowboy hats and pistols or rat-a-tat machine guns. The graphics are great, and the helmet is really cool with a purple feather on top! The sword blade is rather flimsy so as not to seriously hurt little brother. Got breast and shoulder plates, shin protectors, helmet, and sword. The box s made to look like a treasure chest......

Not quite. The plastic bullets were fired by a spring inside the cartridge body.
The caps were merely for the sound.
I had one of the sixguns and a 38 snubnosed detective special that used the same Shootin Shell ammunition. They worked without the stick-em caps.
These guns were sold for many years and were advertised nationally by one of the biggest toy makers in the country. The BATF is not interested in kids toys.

Sounds like one overzealous jerk to me. My bet is that the Special Agent screwed up and is now in full CYA mode.
But then, there was a case several years back when the Feds banned a bunch of Russian B-B guns because they were made of real AK-47 parts.
And a $400 toy gun? Some toy!
This here is the Remco Pom-Pom Gun. This toy was sold from the late 50's through the early 60's. I put my Marx Frankenstein in the pic to show how large this gun is. Pretty big. Several times I have been asked "does it work?" when showing a Battery op toy.....well, this is the collectible that broke me of putting batteries in my old toys. I slapped 4 D cells into this baby and proceeded happily to pull the controls....control light flashing, Pom Pom barrels pumping in and out, entire gun unit swiveling in circles right then left......all of a sudden.....nothing! That was maybe 20 years ago. It hasn't worked since....nor have I tried to make it work. A foolish thing to have done, and an event I seldom even contemplate with my toys anymore........even with cheapo batteries.

Here's one cool spy toy from 1964...the Mattel Zero M Sonic Blaster! This is a toy gun not easily concealed. When you pull this baby out the neighborhood kids take notice! The wording on the box states, "SAFE, NO CAPS OR BATTERIES NEEDED!" Well, I guess that was proven wrong, cause Consumer Magazine put out the following review on the Sonic Blaster-
Quote"The Mattel Agent Zero M Sonic Blaster 5530 fires compressed air with a deafening blast. Our measurements top out at 157 dB–above a level that can do permanent damage to the hearing of an adult. We rate the toy Not Acceptable."
Adults are always messing with a kid's fun! Gotta admit it does boom! And the air it fires is tremendous! The Mattel Sonic Blaster was introduced one year after Wham-o's Air Blaster toy....I figure Mattel wanted in on Wham-o's success with an air blasting gun....they just maybe took it too far.......

8)
Me too Hep.......that is, if Buddy left any out there for us.
Hep and Scatter....two of my favorite people! Hope you both had spectacular holidays! I love the smell of caps fired too......
I was much more into sci-fi and horror as a kid than I was into westerns, and the only western I ever watched on TV was Bonanza. As a result, I had few cowboy related toys other than a Deputy board game (which I reacquired about five years ago),
Moreover, when it came to cowboys and Indians, I was on the side of the Indians. As a result, I had a beautiful bow and arrow set but no six gun that could fire off a roll of caps. Now of course I'd love to have both a M.I.B. cap gun based on the Lone Ranger or Wyatt Earp or some other cool character, but I'd also like a loose cap gun that worked well so I could fire off cap rolls in the house!
:)
I know what you mean, the smells gotta bring back alot of memories. I recall those little 1 cap metal rockets you could toss in the air (they'd ignite the cap on impact). Found 1 at moms a while back. I'd have hated to be on the receiving end of an errant toss!
Oh I loved those! Parents being what they are these days, those little rockets haven't been sold for decades.
:(
I always liked the ones that had a spaceman standing in the middle of the capbomb! Got one here somewhere....I'll start diggin'! Didn't they have a Batman capbomb too?
Didn't know there were manned ones. Too cool. Ours were just heavy little metal skull busters! :D

Ain't no bigger podunk than the one I live in jimm....don't be using that excuse........ha!

Think I already showed the Mattel Planet of the Apes bolt-action machine gun...this is Mattel's POTA Rapid Fire rifle from 1965. This is a combination old-West rifle with a round bullet magazine as on machine guns. It fires loudly as you pull the trigger. Most notable is the "weathered" bronze finish applied to Mattel's POTA guns....really spectacular, but didn't go over extremely well with the kids back then. Each bullet on the underside of the magazine has "Mattel 38 SPL" on it.......

jimm....searched through my plane kits and can only find a C47....do you know of any kits made of the C46? What is interesting is that by model number the C46 would seem to have been produced prior to the C47 yet it looks so much more streamlined and modern than the C47......

This is a 1953 Buddy L Spitfire Machine Gun. Over 2 feet long and weighs over 2 lbs. Combines plastic with plated steel and aluminum. Has a drop down cap loader, and also makes a nice rat-a-tat sound when you turn the crank. Bi-pod folds under when needed..........

The C-47 Skytrain/Dakota was built by Douglas Aircraft and was a military/cargo version of the DC-3. The DC-3 was first flown 1935. The military version came out in late 1941. Around 16,000 were built, of which maybe 2,000 are still flying.
The C-46 Commando was built by Curtis Aircraft starting in 1941 but only about 3100 were made.
The C-46 was about 10 feet longer and its wing span was a bit wider. It was faster, had a better range almost 2X that of the C-47, and could fly a couple thousand feet higher.
The biggest problem was its engines. Those Pratt & Whitney R-2800-51 engines put out 2000 horsepower; The C-47's Pratt & Whitney R-1830-90's put out only 1200.
Problem was--it cost half again more to run a C-46. Quite a few of them are still flying, though, mostly in Northwestern Canada and in Alaska. They are great for hauling stuff in crappy weather--tough birds.
Williams made a 1/72 scale model kit of the C-46. And there are several sources for finished carved mahogany models.
Thanks for the write-up Fester. I remember Pop telling me they flew Trans-Atlantic once. Had to land on a tiny spec in the middle of the ocean. When they took off it was off a cliff! :o

I had one, too. Still remember the smell when wearing it (uh, from the toy, that is).
Hep....no cardboard insert inside...I'm bettin it had one, but I don't see how it fit...the helmet has to go in at a weird angle to fit in the box...really cramped. DL, the Steve Canyon helmet is soooooooo cool! I had one as a kid too. I have kept my eyes open for one through the years, but there is always a flaw that keeps me from buying. Usually wear to the helmet/visor, ratty box, or twisted mal-shaped or broken chin straps..........Curse, the Thor is one of my sculpts from my "Carnival Chalk figure" period.
Here is another head piece for the well groomed back-lot warrior....this is a Marx Top Kick D.I. (Drill Instructor) hat. Doesn't say Marine Corps., but the emblem is definitely Marines, and from one who been-there seen-that, this is in the exact shape and look of a Marine Corp. D I hat (cover). On a large and beautiful card. Never seen another one of these on the card. Original cost...43 cents. The hat is very fragile. I'll bet few of these lasted more than a day of neighborhood kid war.

Sounds like he had a stop over at Bluie West One. It was an airfield in Greenland. You approached it by flying up a fjord for about 50 miles, sheer cliffs on both sides, lots of twists and false leads to cope with--in fog or low lying clouds. Then you landed on a gravel and steel plank runway 5000 feet long by 145 feet wide (a C-47 had a 95 foot wingspan-- the C-46-- 108 ft not much room to spare. The runway started at 12 feet above sea level and finished at 100 feet ASL where it met the end of a glacier.
The base had a tugboat which was used to tow icebergs out of the way of the planes taking off.
Today it is known as Narsarsuaq Airport.
The other Trans-Atlantic specks were Goose Bay Labrador, and Reykjavik or Keflavik in Iceland. the most likely one involving cliffs would probably be BW-1.
The Transatlantic ferry pilots were amazing guys.
Thanks Fester, if I recall correctly they left N Carolina and his destination was Africa, so not quite sure where that island stop was.

My mauser Broomhandle, made from a tic tac box, a binder clip, two ink pen barrels, three popsicle sticks, two rubber bands , an eversharp pencil insert, and a cut off piece of yard-sale wooden signpost. Am Now painting it. . It does actually fire, albeit not repeating. All those colorful things in the tic-tac box ammo magazine are airsoft pellets. It breech loads. You pull the rubber band over the end of the popsicle stick on the reciever, remove the eversharp pencil insert, put your ammo in, replace the insert and put the band over the eraser of the insert. To fire, aim, pull back the insert and release. It breech loads because the barrel sometimes sticks.
What can you expect when you make a pistol out of office supples and hold it together with tape and hot glue.
Sometimes when you want a toy gun a certain way, you gotta do it yourself.
Wow Doc... that's some creativity!
We'll get the aliens and zombies with Tic-Tacs... their physical structures could never handle these colorful mints!!

These are really cool! These are 3 Renwal Western Style Guns. I remember searching out all known color variations of this gun (all I knew). These are circa 1951. Renwal produced many plastic toys during the 50's and 60's. Quite often Renwal would combine very attractive and different colored sections to a toy...as with these guns. The red gun has it's original cardboard holster with packet of bullets. You could load 5 bullets in the gun cylinder and fire away! These babies are large too! Just at 11" each in length.

Part of the spy craze of the 60's...box says this could have come from the Arkansas or Ontario Canada plant. Canada...oh brother...the land of Hep. Daisy tried to expand from BB guns to a really nice, but relatively unknown line of toys in the 60's. This be one of them.....

But what or how does it repeat fifty shots? Is it a cap gun? Do you cock it so that it works mechanically, or do you pump it so that it works by air pressure? And the hide-a-way pistol does the same somehow?
???
It's a cap firing gun...both of them. Looks like it would be a ruff assignment to stuff a 50 cap roll in that little pistol! I ain't up for it!

This is a Marx Thunderguns Rifle Pistol and Holster Set. Dated 1955-60. The pistol measures 12 inches long and the rifle is 35 inches long. The holster is black soft plastic with nice, but hard to see graphics. The Thunderguns were unique in that they were cap guns that fired a double roll of caps. In other words two caps went off at once when you pulled the trigger.....more bang...more smoke. A very nice set of guns from Marx. I always thought of Mattel as the big-boys in Cowboy cap guns as I grew up, but this set is exceptional. I'm betting the double caps were abit tricky to find at just any dime store....

This is a Marx Thunderguns Rifle Pistol and Holster Set. Dated 1955-60.... The Thunderguns were unique in that they were cap guns that fired a double roll of caps. In other words two caps went off at once when you pulled the trigger.....more bang...more smoke. A very nice set of guns from Marx.... but this set is exceptional.
Oh wow! Twice the bang at the pull of a trigger! That is absolutely awesome. Just imagine firing that off in the back of the church!
How long have you had that set though? It looks like new old stock.
???
Wow, even I haven't thought of firing off cap guns in the back of a church. Gotta try that out some day.
Might play in the 60s, SWAT team nowadays :(
Only Hep could come up with shooting cap guns off in the back of a church....no doubt with a full congregation! Ha!
Had the set many years.....never used, so yep, I'm bettin it's old store stock...
Anyone have any pics or info on two 'weapon sets' that tied into "T.H.E. Cat"?
T.H.E. Cat was a 1966-1967 one season wonder on NBC.
I think the two sets were made by Ideal.

I've never seen a box for it either, Bud. I didn't even know this gun existed until I stumbled across it on eBay a few months ago. The seller wasn't even sure it was made by Remco, thinking someone stuck the Hamilton's Invaders sticker on it after it was bought. It clearly says Remco on the gun though. I guess the guy just never saw where it was marked. It must be scarce.
Here's a scan of another one of the great Daisy B-B Gun ads that graced the back covers comic magazines in the sixties:

That is a real possibility. Repro stickers are available. Interesting that I've never seen another with that sticker.....been at this collecting along time, but definitely not an authority.
Saw an episode of Toy Hunter the other day where they bought and were using one of your sonic bazookas, apperantly quite the noise maker!! :o
Oh yea? Did they go into the Sonic Blaster being taken off shelves cause it was deemed a hazard to hearing?
Kinda the whole theme of the episode, Lawn Darts stuff that got banned (or close to it) a good one...
Yeah, I fell in love with that blaster!!
Not sure if anyone remembers this as they were pulled off the market back then due to kids getting ear pain from the loud noise, it was called an Agent Zero M Sonic Blaster

Probably not as I only have a couple of odds and ends now, 99% sold a long long time ago, alot of it when I decided not to do a book and still sell every once and a while when someone asks me for something specific and I can find it from a dealer or collector (my buddy expressed an interest in a boxed Great Garloo so I found one for him as I know it would make him happy).
I am always amazed at how the value went up on some of the items we love , back in the 70s anywhere you looked you could buy bond briefcases MIB for well under $25 most of the better bond or uncle toys went $25 or under (full retail from dealers) Aurora kits were dirt cheap as well as GI Joe & Capt Action, 90% of the space stuff boxed also fell into the same price range. On many of these items you could find unopened cases and wouldn't even buy them as they were so common and abundent.
Funny world collecting as you never know what will pop up , dont think the deals are all gone on this stuff , a couple of years ago a friend of mine told me about a toy deal and wanted me to get it for him so I bought a batch of Matt Mason stuff (still boxed) as well as orig carded Colorforms aliens for him so the deals are still out there..
So should we understand that you were already collecting baby boomer toys back in te seventies? When did you sell them all, and what prompted you to do so?
???
I always loved toys from a child up (never lost my appriciation of them or the great memories they bring ) but was not a collector back then just a seller who's interest was in the area of toys. Later on I started to collect things I had liked as a child & was thinking of doing a book or series of books. Never did it then decided to travel so sold off most of it in the late 80s-90s . I still occasionally look for things at shows , flea markets , sales ,etc for people I know when they ask me but pretty much nowadays I just love to read and post memories of these fun times and goodies.

Getting skunks (or other feral critters) out from under your porch is easy.
Just find a European deli or grocery. Make sure they sell Scandinavian foods. Buy a small piece of Lutefisk, take it home and toss it under the porch.
Within about 24 hours, the critters will vacate the premises.
Then all you'll have to do is find a way to get the Norwegians out from under your porch! ::)
I think that the way you get the good folk from Norway out is to announce that the folks down the road are serving haggis for breakfast .. oops .. sorry that only works for Glaswegians. I really should wear my glasses early in the morning.

Here's a kids toy machine gun that is styled after the old WW1 Marlin's and Colt "potato diggers". It's a very old 1920's or 1930's Boy's Carpentry article giving instructions of how to make a toy crankfired, hopper fed, tripod mounted machine gun. It utilizes a spring that a cam on the crank hande causes to be pulled back while a dowel piece of wood drops down in front of the piece being held in tension by the spring, and when the piece falls off the cam, it springs forward slapping the short wooden dowel "bullet" down the tube barrel. The hopper feed is made from a flattened out tin can. Everything is easy to find to make this neat toy gun. The pictures in the article and instructions explain it much better than I can. The article is a two page article, so be sure to click "continue" or whatever to see the conclusion of the instructions and article. but you can also read other articles if you search that site's link.
Anyway, here's the article's link. http://chestofbooks.com/home-improvement/woodworking/Carpentry-and-Mechanics-For-Boys/Chapter-XVII-A-Toy-Machine-Gun.html#.Us4pg_vleSp (http://chestofbooks.com/home-improvement/woodworking/Carpentry-and-Mechanics-For-Boys/Chapter-XVII-A-Toy-Machine-Gun.html#.Us4pg_vleSp)
.
That's neat Peking! Seems to have been several wood clicker style guns prior to the 50's. Some were home made and some were manufactured....
I've only got one of those old wooden toy machine guns, but it's pretty cool. This is Krak-A-Jap wooden machine gun. Rotating the machine gun crank produces a very loud firing sound. The handle underneath removes and can be placed further up on the gun to be carried as a tommy gun. The Krak-A-Jap was offered in 1943 and 1944. Two versions were produced...water-cooled and air-cooled....air-cooled has lots of holes drilled in the thick cardboard barrel...only difference.

This be the Remco Screaming Mee Mee-E Rifle. I think it was Remco's answer to the Johnny 7 OMA. Really a beautiful toy gun. Shoots bullets out of the top and of course the Screaming Mee Mee-E red bomb!
I have a very clear childhood memory of this gun. The entire neighborhood of backyard soldiers assembled around me to get a peek at the Screaming Mee Mee-E rifle....I was the first on the block to get one (and the only). I loaded the big red Mee Mee bomb into the front barrel, pointed the rifle at an angle and fired.....the darn bomb went only about 5 feet and made the exact sound of a rubber squeaky dog or baby toy! The neighborhood kids lost interest instantly. I was very disappointed. Still...it's a cool gun to look at...ha!

I just love the box art on this toy gun!
Two questions:
1. How far did this Remco Rifle fire the five bullets advertised on the box? More than five feet I hope.
2. What were the loudest baby boomer toy guns not utilizing caps? The Agent Zero M Sonic Blaster and the Mattel M-16 Marauder?
???
Yep on 1...more than 5 feet. And yep on 2....Sonic Blaster is the king of loud followed by the Ideal M-16 and the Wham-o Air Blaster. I got to pull back the bolt on the M-16 and hit the trigger on only one occasion. After that...it was banished to the basement....
I guess the battery op Marx machine guns were pretty loud too......M-14....B A R and tri-pod machine gun.

I just looked through 35 pages here and wasn't bored for a second. Very cool thread here guys!
My dad was a multi-decorated WWII Army veteran, so he had no problem letting me play with any toy (or sometimes real) gun. So growing up in the early 70's, yeah, I actually had a good handful of the goodies shown here. I will try to go through and list them all later, but for now I thought I would share my oldest gun toy.
This is my father's childhood cap gun (he was born in 1913, so I would put this as being from the late teens or early 20s. Cast iron and made by National. The only markings I can find are a "Made In U.S.A." and a "35" inside. The stampings seem to be individual letter strikings. I played with this as a child, and blasted off many old red rolls of caps in this. And to this day, it still fires perfectly. I may do a little Youtube video showing it working, if I can find an old roll of caps.

But the best is the 2 receipts that were in the bag. Bruce and Ken Pharmacy, July 5th, 1981.
I am betting that my buddies and I raced over there the day after 4th of July to see what fireworks and caps they would have for cheap (or maybe even just give us).

I only remembered that weird round thing as I took a good look at it, and man, did it bring back some memories.
So here is the story. I'm maybe 10 or so, and I keep asking to get one of those "Cap Bombs" from the store. I'm at the store one day with my dad, and ask him to buy it for me. He picks it up, looks it over, throws it down again, and says "I'm not buying that piece of junk. I'll make you a better one when we get home." So we get home and we go down into his "workshop" and he grabs 4 metal washers, a bolt and a nut. He puts it together and says "There. There's your damn cap bomb."
And the thing was actually better than the store one because I could fit not just one, but six (six!!!) single caps between the 2 center washers. I would carefully screw it all together tight, and then whip it against the cement walk, or the street, or a tree, and if I threw it hard enough and it hit "just right", all six would go off at the same time.
It looks like a rusty mess all these years later, but man, did I have fun with that thing.
So now that I found some old roll caps, the question is "can I get a 90+ year old cap gun to actually fire off a decrepit roll of 30 + year old caps"?
We want video!!

One thing that I am hoping still to find (but I am pretty sure it got thrown away) is my sky rocket "bazooka". In my early teens, a few friends and I formed a "bazooka brigade" to terrorize the neighborhood around the 4th of July holiday. The bazooka's were simply small dia. metal pipes, maybe 18" long, with a wooden block with a cutout attached for a forward-facing handle, and wrapped in tape to keep it together and seal the one end of the pipe. It was the perfect size to sling over your shoulder and aim the lit bottle rocket toward your enemy while it went off. "Black Cats" were our ammunition of choice.
Took a quick look around on Ebay and noticed some of their odd selling rules. It looks like you can't sell roll caps there, but you can sell 8 ring caps. What the heck is the difference? Are these old roll caps now illegal here in the U.S.? And that thing of painting all the old gun toys orange, where is our common sense going?
But I digress. I will try to put together some type of a video this weekend.
Leeman,
You have retained so many special items from your childhood, I'm impressed and have a question.
Do you live in the same house as you did as a child?
As every move my parenst or I made, things went 'missing' or were broken or just 'tossed away' and you seem to have so many of your childhood toys and live in house that is one hundred years old. I do have friends who have bought their parents or grandparents houses. :D
Flower - Yes, I do live in the family home. My parents had me rather late in their lives, and I lost them both somewhat early. I am an only child, so I just stayed here after the inheritance. My Grandfather bought this house in 1925, so you can say that there is a lot of stored stuff still here. I have already sold off most of my childhood toys, so if you see me posting any Star Wars, Micronauts, Megos, G.I. Joe, Hot Wheels, comics, or the like, they are just my photographs of what I have sold off. But there are always new things I am finding as I go through nearly 100 years of stuff. Believe me, it's half fun and half maddening. I just a few days ago found a little collection of still filled Whiskey and bourbon bottles with tax stamps and label seals dating from the 50s. I'm still looking for my original Star Wars laser pistol and laser rifle, and all my full size Shogun Warriors (had Godzilla too). Although those may have gone to the neighbor brat 25 years ago.
Leeman - It sounds more fun than maddening .. At least it's not boring or dull. You also have the knowledge that you, yourself got rid of/sold your toys and that no one stole them or tossed them out.
If you're not selling the house, there isn't a rush and you can go at your own pace. Life is strange and you might come across a treasure trove or two and then we can all watch you on the Antiques Road Show. ;)
QuoteLife is strange
Yes...
So the little nasty is at the door and wants to come in.....well, twist the top of Time Bomb....set it by the door....and tell the slime-sucker to come on in! He's sure to be mesmerized by the loud ticking and will hesitate just long enough for Time Bomb to explode! This is one of the truly great toys of the '60s. Simple, but a ton of fun.

Ahhhhh,
Time Bomb was clearly a collaborative effort between Milton-Bradley, producers of
Monooly which was the single most iconic board game of the twentieth century, and Marvin Glass Studios, the most prolific and creative toy designers of the latter half of the twentieth century.

Flower - Thanks as always for the comments. I am trying to get onto the Antiques Road Show. It's not as easy as you might think. First of all, they might only come to your city once every few years. And when they do, it's not an open session that you can just walk into. You have to apply for tickets, and then a certain number of people are picked at random. I have been trying for a number of years and haven't gotten in yet. They are coming to Chicago again this July, and I have applied. So keep your fingers crossed for me. From what I understand, you are allowed 2 items, but an entire collection of like items
may be considered only 1 item. That's what I'm hoping for if I can score a ticket.
bigbud - That ticking Time Bomb is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. I would have had a BLAST (pun intended) with that thing as a kid. But then I probably would have broken it the first day I had it. That thing just screams to be thrown into a neighbors backyard while they are BBQ-ing.
I didn't quite get to making my video yet, but I did spend an hour or so carefully unrolling one of the old rolls of caps. They were all kind of stuck together, so it was kind of a pain to do it without having it all fall apart. Took another 25 minutes to try to feed it into the gun itself without it disintegrating. I'm sure that all was much easier to do with 10 year old fingers and eyesight than it is now. ;)
I'm not very experienced with making Youtube videos, and trying to string together 2 videos into one was a pain, but I think I finally got it uploaded. And hearing the sound of my own voice... yikes.
But I promised a video of my old cap gun firing, so here it is. Cheap camera being out of focus and all.
Be kind. ;)

No, I don't know him personally. But if he attends any of the small horror cons that have been popping up in the Chicago burbs over the last 10 years or so, there is a good chance that I have ran into him.

I love that gun!! It sounds like the hammer is striking with plenty of force........newer caps, and BANG!!!
Ok..so this put some serious fire-power in the hands of the neighborhood soldiers back in 1964. This is Remco's Monkey Division Okinawa Gun. It is 36 inches long and fires red bullets that are 3 1/2 inches long. How cool! Has an ammo belt, and a front bipod. It is (in my opinion) designed after the military M-60 machine gun.

Well, it was Steve McQueen that made the "Mare's Laig" popular. 8)
Josh Randall played by McQueen in
Wanted: Dead or Alive was the first to carry that kind of cut-down Winchester '92. And what kid in the 60s didn't think McQueen was cool?
It was so cool-looking that several subsequent TV series featured it, including
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr,
The Magnificent Seven television series and most lately
Firefly/Serenity.
And probably as a tribute Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) carried one in
Zombieland 8)

Here is some serious firepower! This is the 1961 Remco B 52 Ball Turret. Runs on 4 D batteries. I do believe this is the first time it has been out of the box. 53 years before seeing daylight...that's nuts! Very detailed toy. Has lots of dials and pointers...the twin machine gun barrels swivel.....red belt of bullets feels through the gun as you press the trigger....has oxygen and communication masks....does everything but fly!

seriously nuts that it leaves me in awe! I mean here I wasn't even consciously aware of the existence of the Remco B-52 Ball Turret and you have one that's never been removed from the box.

I've wondered for a number of years though whether the B-52s still in service these days continue to have the machine gun ball turrets. They're no longer clearly visible.

Yea Hep, I wouldn't think that any bomber would have machine gun turrets anymore.

Hmmmm. Well with respect to B-52s, here is what it says in Wikipedia:
Quote from: WikipediaThe B-52H ....aircraft's first flight occurred on 10 July 1960, and it entered service on 9 May 1961. This is the only variant still operational. A total of 102 B-52Hs were built. The last production aircraft, B-52H AF Serial No. 61-0040, left the factory on 26 October 1962.... the rear defensive armament was changed from (the 4 .50 caliber machine guns quad mounted in a remote controlled tail turret) to a 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannon (later removed in 1991–94).
:)
Wow... the real plane was produced in '60 thru '62. The Remco turret toy was produced in '61. Remco was being really current with what they called this toy at the time..... They were putting out the Monkey Div. gun stuff, so I don't know why they didn't call it a B 17 or B-24 turret....WW2 style. Be interesting to know the discussion on how they named this Remco toy.
I couldn't resist this gun when I saw it. It is the Mars Attacks Martian Brain Disintegrator. So cool! Lots of different sounds and lights AND the clear chamber has a brain that wiggles! Ha! Came out late '90s. Last pic is of the Disintegrator held by an evil Martian genius living anonymously in Kansas. He is about to blast the loud mooing Children of the Night! Actually, they are cattle. Guess that would be Children of the Grass? Poopers of the Plains?

No. The Remco B52 Ball Turret toy was about as current as a toy could be. Look at the B52 Aircraft Deliveries chart on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_B-52_Stratofortress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_B-52_Stratofortress)
B52Gs which had the machine gun turret were still being produced in quantity in 1961.

Those Mars Attacks! guns were great. There was a different style too, from what I remember.
I know this particular Disintegrator came in a different color scheme. I had to have one with the flesh-colored brain! Ha!

I don't understand why not. The removal of machine gun turrets leaves the bombers defenceless against both pursuing fighters and missiles. After all, what warships use against close-in missile attacks are precisely banks of radar linked and computer guided machine guns.
???

Exactly. Most jet fighter pilots hated when they replaced all guns with missiles. Many times those missiles were very unreliable and they were used up fairly quickly. If my life depended on it I would certainly want machine guns/light cannon to fall back on. You never know what might happen in a fight. Best to be prepared.
That B52 gun is insane, I wasn't around for the early 60s armament like this! The Mars attack stuff is very under-rated imo...worth picking up and very cool.

I'm gonna miss this thread.......dammit!
It's a fabulous thread alright. Bigbud's armament collection is over the top awesome.
:(
Maybe he could start it up again with monsters in the background (pass it off in the vintage monsters section).
The mods said they might keep the Non-Monster Toys section. I hope they do because toys are such a big part of the whole Monster Boomer/Monsterkid experience, and it's really hard to draw the line sometimes between a monster related toy and a non-monster related toy. For example, some of the Remco toy guns are awesome and have that Hamilton's Invaders vibe even though they technically aren't monster related. The whole idea of toy weaponry goes hand in hand with monster movies anyway. Now the Non-Monster Movies section...not so much. I never got into it very much. Love the toys, though.
If they keep this section then bigbud will be compelled to stick around and show us more of his cool toy collection. 8)
I just read in the "purging" thread in Announcements that they will have a Non-Monster Toys thread in the Vintage Monster Toys section (and maybe one in Modern?) as opposed to keeping this section. Well, I'm glad we'll have somewhere to post about toys which may not technically be monster toys.
As long as there's at least a thread. I love seeing cool toys I'm not aware of, monster or not

This time of year the yard is usually filled with bag worms and caterpillars on the shrubs. So what to do when you find an AHI wiggler chewing your smoke bush? Call the police? Well, way out here we are the police, so I need to pull out the Topper Toys Crime Buster Police Gun! This thing does it all! Sprays red riot bullets, shoots regular white bullets, launches a three color signal missile, a smoke grenade, shoots sparks and has it's own built in siren! And you get to wear an official Crime Buster ammo belt! Pretty super! The three plastic bags (last photo) contain 1. more bullets and the color material to make the three color signal missile load 2. the instruction sheet 3. white powder to load the smoke grenade bomb.

Good idea Lester. Send me some bucks so I can get started...ha! I'll get Scatter on some fund raising too....double ha!
OK, but Scatter takes a steep cut of all proceeds he raises. Banana prices are skyrocketing!

Ha! Been just at a year since a post on one of my favorite subjects....toy munitions! Well here we go again. This is a pretty cool item that is seldom seen....the Mattel Bolt Action Planet of the Apes Tommy Gun with Ape Mask. Dated 1967. The tommy gun has the cap loading drawer manufactured shut unlike most other Mattel tommy guns.....so ya just get a rat-a-tat-tat. It has the special "aged" patina paint job that is found on the Planet of the Ape guns. Mattel also put out an Ape pistol and a rapid fire rifle that also came on a similar card like the tommy gun. But the rapid fire rifle is really little more than a short clicker gun. The Planet of the Apes tommy gun is the grand-daddy of the Mattel Ape guns!

I have never seen that, Bud. Really impressive! I love the way you casually lay it across thousands of dollars worth of vintage toys to photograph. Beautiful collection, my friend.
Thanks Mord! I think it's surrounded by maybe acouple hundred dollars worth of stuff...ha! And, in my basement dungeon that spot on the glass case is the only room to set anything...ha!

Thanks Hep.....but so very unworthy of me. I'm a base amateur compared to many serious sci-fi gun collectors. Check out danefield.com and view the Alphadrome Robot and Space Database to see some real stuff! Those guys are serious!
Will do!

Last post on the toy guns was May 20th....what's with that! Ha! Couldn't stop by the UMA without putting up another childhood monster blaster! This is a super cool spy gun set by Marx......look at all the neat attachments this thing has!

It's Christmas Day! It's finally here! And so are the marathons of A Christmas Story with Ralphie trying to find any angle to obtain a Red Ryder BB gun. I was thinking about what toy gun I would have gone to such lengths to have under the tree for Christmas. I'm thinking it might have been this.....the Nichols Fury 500. This baby looks like a Thompson machine gun with all sorts of space motifs all over it....to include the super cool front sight in the shape of a space ship! Nichols stepped away from their usual "cowboy" brand of toy gun when they developed the Fury 500. When the first prototypes came out it was found to be too heavy. The solution was to cast one side of the Fury in metal and the other in plastic. Problem solved! The Fury 500's ammo drum holds a roll of 500 caps and fires them rapidly by way of it's battery operated feed mechanism. A super cool toy gun! One I would have been thrilled to find under the Christmas tree! Ralphie, you can keep with the cowboy stuff...ha!

Happy holidays to you too Mord! And Hep...and Flower....and several others. I was wondering how many took time to look, so I wrote down the # of views when I posted pics of the Fury 500...so far 239! Wow...the UMA is alive and well for sure!

Here's a cool Marx gun set seldom seen. Marx wimped-out with the graphics as the soldier looks very American and the gun set is definitely so you can play a German. I can't explain the silencer...maybe to sneak up and fire quietly on some tall monster. But there aren't any German monsters...are there? Ha!

The cops portrayed in the commercial weren't a bunch of paramilitary wannabees. That's not the characteristic municipalties sought when they were hiring police officers in the 1960's.

Yes.
"Common sense" is just a nostalgic memory as well. :(
Quote from: Jim Bertges on April 28, 2020, 01:04:39 PMIt really was a different time, wasn't it?
Indeed it was. Here's a little vignette on the subject I ran across a few years ago:
In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that plastic
bags weren't good for the environment. The woman apologized to her and
explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day."
That's right, they didn't have the green thing in her day. Back then,
they returned their milk bottles, Coke bottles and beer bottles to the
store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized
and refilled, using the same bottles over and over. So they really were
recycled. But they didn't have the green thing back her day.
In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn't have an escalator
in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and
didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two
blocks. But she's right. They didn't have the green thing in her day.
Back then, they washed the baby's diapers because they didn't have the
throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling
machine burning up 220 volts "wind and solar power" really did dry the
clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters,
not always brand-new clothing. But that old lady is right, they didn't
have the green thing back in her day.
Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house not a TV in every
room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a pizza dish, not a
screen the size of the state of Montana . In the kitchen, they blended
and stirred by hand because they didn't have electric machines to do
everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the
mail, they used wadded up newspaper to cushion it, not styrofoam or
plastic bubble wrap.
Back then, they didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut
the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised
by working so they didn't need to go to a health club to run on
treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right, they didn't
have the green thing back then.
They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty, instead of using a
cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They
refilled pens with ink, instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced
the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor
just because the blade got dull. But they didn't have the green thing back then.
Back then, people took the streetcar and kids rode their bikes to school
or rode the school bus, instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour
taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire
bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn't need a computerized
gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in
space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.
But that old lady is right. They didn't have the green thing back in her
day. ;)

Then you'll be off like a prom dress at midnight!
