Title: Wolfman Question
Post by: steve08080 on July 15, 2011, 09:01:41 PM
Watched the Wolfman tonight and noticed something early in the movie. During the attack on Jenny, Larry Talbot comes to her aide and starts to battle the wolf. As they struggle, Larry moves to the left passed the tree and is obscured a bit. At this point and quickly I add, you can see Larry battling a Wolfman vs a wolf. Any story behind that? I thought it was a bit out odd that they would switch from a wolf to a Wolfman.

If you've got the Legacy DVD, watch it with Tom Weaver's commentary. He explains how the original screenplay, titled "Destiny," was more of a psychological thriller than a straightforward horror film. The audience wasn't supposed to see the full werewolf until the very end of the film. Until then, there was a question of whether or not it was all in Larry's head; a case of psychological lycanthropy, rather than genuine shapeshifting. As the script changed during production, different shots were made.

Thanks! After I posted the question, I went back and watched it again with the Tom Weaver commentary. If I recall, he couldn't explain it, but had his theory which is what you posted. God stuff!

It's not a theory, it's what happened. The script was rewritten during production, and the decision to show the werewolf transformations and full make-up was made late in the game. That's why the fight between Larry and Bela was shot both ways. During editing, a brief shot of werewolf Bela (a stuntman, actually, not 60-year-old Lugosi) slipped by. Chaney actually bought the German shepard standing in as the "wolf" Bela from the trainer.
