Hey all, I don't know if there is a discussion already about this. I couldn't find it, if so.
I am just curious though, what are your top 3 favorite monsters of all time?
Mine are probably...
Gamera
The Gillman
King Kong
And I guess I'll throw out a few runners up, Hellboy, Swamp Thing, the Ymir, Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolfman/ An American Werewolf in London, the Rhedosaurus, Godzilla, the Molemen, The Predator, the Aliens, Brundlefly, the giant bear from The Prophecy, Gwoemul (the monster from The Host) the insects from Mimic, Nomac from Blade 2, Pumpkinhead, Two Face from TDK, the demon from Curse of the Demon, Verthimax Pejorative (the dragon from Dragonslayer) and the insects from Starship Troopers.
Godzilla
Gremlins
Cloverfield
Not exactly golden oldies for the last two, but I still love 'em.
The Gillman
The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms
The Metaluna Mutant

The Gillman
The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms
The Metaluna Mutant
You know, I have always felt bad for the Metaluna Mutants...they were essentially slaves like the Mole People :(
KING KONG
FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER
THE WOLF MAN
Also, The Cyclops (7th Voyage Of Sinbad), Talos (Jason & The Argonauts), Godzilla, Ymir, Kharis, Gill Man, The Thing, Frankenstein's Teenage Monster (just do, for some reason) & The Aztec Mummy.
Needless to say, there are many more.

I agree. At least the Mole People had the movie named after them. The poor ol' mutants weren't even given that, and were compared to "earth insects" too. I think they deserve space on a talk show...is Oprah willing to come back and to a special?
Hmmm.....I'll make it a little easier on myself by doing 3 classic and 3 modern:
Classic; Frankenstein, The Wolfman and Creature (runner up the Phantom)
Modern; Freddy, Leatherface, Tar Man Zombie (runner up Pinhead)
I love how all of our lists thus far are wildly different ;D
Dracula, Wolfman and Frankenstein's monster.
FRANKENSTEIN's monster, Creature from the Black Lagoon,
YMIR
Runners up: Godzilla, ALIEN, Gate keepers( Ghost Busters), Metaluna, Col. Glenn Manning(War of the Colossal Beast)
King Kong, Frankenstein( I was a Teenage Frankenstein), Venom, Creeper( from Jeepers Creepers)....so many more.
Dracula
Godzilla
Creature From The Black Lagoon
Runner up: King Kong
Wow, I'm surprised to see The Gillman on most of these lists. I mean, I know he's popular, I just didn't know he's THAT popular! That's awesome!! ;D
I like ZH's format, so I'll borrow it:
Classic: Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man
Modern: Count Yorga, Blacula, Nosferatu

I think Nosferatu pre-dates your three classic ones! ;)
Just three? Hmm...can I do it by movies/TV shows?
Chaney's London After Midnight vampire
Everyone scary in the original Dark Shadows
All the mon-stars in Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein
Honorable mention:
Godzilla
King Kong

He can qualify as both I suppose since he did appear on screen in 1979 as well as 1922 but for me modern monsters are the ones that are distanced from the classic; Wolfman, Dracula, Frankenstein, Mummy, Creature, etc.
Frankenstein's monster
The Mummy
The Golem
Honorable mention:
The Invisible Man, Jason, the Gillman, The Hunchback, Ygor, Jekyll and Hyde

Unless I'm refering to the 1979 Kinski version. I love that movie and his portrayal. Creepy setting in a real castle.

I see your point ZH, Yes the '22 and '79 Nosferatu are the same character, but I separated them by the actor and year. When Kinski first bit Harker, he was a predator, vicious and creepy. Same when he appeared in the doorway. He is the modern update on Shreck's classic turn.

I'm definitely not knocking your pick; he may be a monster of a by gone age but I wouldn't want to catch up with him in a dark alley even in the modern world! :D
mine are
1. The Blob
2. Godzilla
3. King Kong

Never saw that version.
Narrowing it down to three is tough...
Frankenstein's Monster
Nosferatu
Godzilla

I hear you ZH, your point got me thinking who would I pick as another #3 in the modern arena...it's harder than I thought. Those were the first three I thought of. Maybe the head vamp from 30 Days of Night. He was vicious.
Frankenstein Monster
Kong (the original)
Godzilla
-The Frankenstein monster
-King Kong
-Nosferatu
Wow, wasn't expecting to see that many people put Nosferatu on their lists ;)
Christopher Lee Dracula
Creature from the Black Lagoon
Gorgo
Universal Mummy

Heck yes!! Gorgo all the way!!
And which Universal Mummy? Karloff's or Chaney's? Both?
Hmmmmm. They both look good and creepy to me after being wrapped in bandages for four thousand years.
hmjfym
Imhotep took the bandages off for almost the entire movie, though...

I prefer Chaney's as far as physical appearance goes. I think he just looks creepier, and more damaged...his body looks literally incomplete.

I still believe that the famous shadow on the wall is one of the creepiest thing ever.

Dracula (Lugosi)
The Monster (Karloff)
Barnabas Collins (Frid)

Sorry. There's only one list allowed per poster.
:o
I know this is just a "fun" list but what really defines a monster? Serial killers ARE monsters in their own right but what about creatures from the sea , mutant bugs ,alien life forms ,giant apes (King Kong/Mighty Joe Young). What about the Hunchback? He seemed more like a tragic figure than anything. Is everything considered a monster because it is different and repulsive in our eyes or is it more than that? Don't want to steer the thread off course but...?
I think we should each just continue to define our own monsters. That way the Giant Claw can make one list, the Hunchback of Notre Dame can make another, and the Wingback of Texas Christian can make a third.
;)

Monsters are freaks...outliers. Tragic in their own right most of the time.
For some reason, I find it hard to group serial killers along with misunderstood nomads like Kong or the Frankenstein's monster, or even predatory animal life. Someone in my family was a victim of a very famous serial killer so I think anyone who chooses to commit evil acts is something much lower than a monster and does not belong on a list like this which is designed purely for the sake of fun. As the creator of this thread, I'd appreciate it if no one placed any real life serial killers on this list, but it's a free country
The term monster is very broad. Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, and Chucky are just as much monsters as Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Invisible Man. I love basically each and ever horror/sci-fi monster ever from Nosferatu through Cloverfield and EVERYTHING in between. I just love creatures and monsters.
The Wolfman, Frankenstein's Monster, Dracula. Someone mentioned the Cloverfield Creature, He was cool. >:D

I'm not gonna be able to answer this question with 10 much less 3. There just way too many and too many varieties and different era's as well.
