What are your three favourite brands of bubble gum? No sugar free brands allowed.
???
Bazooka from day one ....
Double Bubble and Bazooka, then everything else. I usually go for the regular bubble gum flavor, only rarely anything with other flavor. Buy Double Bubble by the big bag.
Bazooka and Thrills!! :D
As kids, our favourite was called "Big Charlie", which was a thick, pink strip about 12" long. Lasted a looooooong time.
By the way, I'm famous in a chewing gum book:

I got hooked on bubble gum while collecting Odd Rod and Wacky Packages cards. Used to buy some called Rain-Blo which came in several flavors, but haven't seen that in years. Double Bubble gum and Wonka's Bottle Cap candy are almost always on hand in this house.

Yes, Thrills, hard core kids' gum! Made by O-Pee-Chee of London, Ontario which is as well known for the hockey cards it produced for decades as for its confections but now carrying the Willy Wonka trademark as well!
I agree that Thrills are scrumptious but it's pretty tough to match bubbles like these with Thrills:

Mmmmmm! They're gumballs made by Leaf. Better than Dubble Bubble multi-coloured gumballs which are comparatively flavourless.

Anybody remember the gritty, grape flavored gum that came with the 1965 Donruss King Kong trading cards? I think the artificial purple dyed sugar flavor bomb permanently altered my brain!
The Donruss King Kong cards unfortunately had very limited distribution due to licencing problems so few others were lucky enough to share your experience.

Maybe it wasn't the licensing but, the chemical poisoning that did the series in. You're not supposed to see purple stars when chewing gum, right?

Bubble gum containers 'Snap-a-gator' and 'Big Tooth' left over from the early seventies ( around `71 or `73 ). Having a candy store between home and school rocked.

Yes! Made by the Philadelphia Chewing Gum Company under the Swell name brand! The killjoys of the anti-smoking lobby combined with the Hysterical Mothers of America Opposed to Just About Everything to get those banned.
The Swell Bubble Gum Cigars though are still available:

I remember the bubble gum cigarettes and cigars as a kid, I also remember hearing about them being banned. Just as well, they would just remove the flavor and sugar anyways. They took the super hot cinnamon out of the cinnamon toothpicks, and reduced Atomic Fireballs jawbreakers down to marble size so kids wouldn't choke on them. Atomic fireballs aren't even hot anymore. Everything I enjoyed as a kid has been altered some way. >:(
Charms Blo-Pops were another thing I would pick up on my way to school. Candy coated bubble gum on a stick.
Charms Blow Pops are mercifully still available. They're part of the diet of discriminating felines everywhere. Hardcore fans will reach for the Super Blow Pops:

Bazooka
Never bought it myself, but I remeber seeing this Gold Rush bubble gum in the `70's.
"Gold Rush" gum was really great! I still have some of the original little plain calico sacks (1970s) that contained the yellowish-gold nuggets. A little tag was attached to the string. I keep a coin collection in the sacks.
It was many years later when they revamped the bags (as above, early 2000?), making them waterproof and printed with the logos, but less authentic. But grape flavour? Really? For gold nuggets?
You're right on both counts. The bags were just plain initially and the gum was absolutely scrumptious! They were offered up by O-Pee-Chee in my neck of the woods.

I can't believe the coincidence. I was in Sugar Fix, a candy import store today, and found these!
Here are Espeez (UK) "Gold Mine" by SP Enterprises Inc., - the last one left, and placed into the other brand's box - and Mexican "Gold Nuggets" by Candy Creations Manufacturing Group. The new design means that the gum is separately packaged in an inner bag of clear cellophane.
I too have seen those in specialty candy shops. What puzzles me is why Topps and its affiliates such as O-Pee-Chee and Scanlens stopped producing Gold Rush Gum and distributing it through their traditional network of corner stores. It was always popular enough and now there's an empty market niche for knockoff products.
:-\
Here's a more traditional Gold Rush Gum bag:

And they came with a hilarious cartoon on the underside of the lid:
These lids are now collectible just like gum cards.
;)
I don't remember Rocks-o-Gum, about when was this out ? The container looks like the Ice Cream we got at school, were these that large too ? Love the cartoon under the lid idea, and can see why they'ld be collectable by themselves ( though if a chilhood memory, I'd have to track down a whole container).
An interesting question. The lids are out there, typically mint unused. And nobody seems to recall seeing the product in stores. Perhaps Topps just test marketed these on a very limited basis in the early seventies but then opted not to go ahead with the product. Pity because I would have bought them on a regular basis.
Oh well. I have a set of the lids in my card binder anyway (and another buried deeply somewhere in a box).

Anyone else here used to have a toy gumball machine back in the sixties, that your parents had to buy refills for ? Can't remember what toy company put them out.
I have a large, real gumball machine, coin operated and made of heavy metal and glass, which I bought myself when moving into my first flat in 1984. I could afford either the gumball machine or a new pillow.
When "The Incredibles" movie came out a few years ago, a very sturdy, small plastic gumball machine was a premium in showbags at our agricultural Easter Show.

I just have packing peanuts now--when all four of my kids lived at home, I kept it full of gumballs with an ashtray full of pennies next to it for their friends.
BTW, that "Rocks o' GUm" inside lid is by Wally Wood, and I think that the Gold Rush box is by Norm Saunders.
Two fine artists, that's for sure.

Yeah, Wally Wood was a master of twisted images. Just look at his work for EC.
Double Bubble Eggs, the perfect Easter treat.

I used to purchase Black Cat licorice flavoured bubble gum back in the sixties. It was delicious!
It was carried by very few variety stores in my neck of the woods though since it was an import from England. I haven't seen it for decades and I believe it's no longer made. Pity.
:(
Licorice flavored bubble gum. :) Man I love to try that. I can't remember having ever seen it in stores.
Blackjack is another licorice flavored gum. It's still available at the candy store in our village, along with a bunch of other things (like Clove gum).
I go through periods of chewing a lot to no candy for months (though lately they've had packs of chocolate Necos, which I'm a sucker for)
Sadly Black Jack isn't bubble gum. Black Jack has the same consistency as Juicy Fruit.
Black Cat you could really chew into like Bazooka and Dubble Bubble.
:)
The idea of a licorice flavored bubble gum appealed to me enough to see if this was sold ANYWHERE in the world, alas not. Apparently there was also a Green Cat (spearmint), a Purple Cat (grape), and a Magic Cat (fruit) bubble gum made by the same company. Might try Black Jack, but never big on chewing gum.
Another BLACK JACK fan...YIPPEE!!
BLACK JACK was always the best chewing gum, and those big, wonderful pink bricks of BAZOOKA were sublime....
"E" ;D ;D ;D ;D
There was indeed a "Black Cat" bubble gum (in the 1970s?, I would have thought). Small black squares, paper-wrapped and aniseed/liquorice flavour. Not often seen in regular shops, but you'd often get a square or two thrown into a candy showbag at our annual Royal Easter Show, Sydney, in the early 70s. But... don't let anyone tell you that "Green Cat" was spearmint flavoured. No one I knew could tolerate the flavour of "Green Cat". Those first few bites, it tasted more like the flavour of a stinky public toilet! An overwhelming strange/foul smell that went straight up your nasal cavities. We used to dare each other to chew it without holding one's nose. It did make pretty cool bubbles, though.

I like Black jack gum also, and Clove gum. Every other year or so they seem to pop up around the fall and then disappear for a few years.
You can get both Black jack and Clove chewing gum all year at a place called Cracker Barrel Country Store. It's a resturant with a retro gift shop. They usually carry candies ranging from 50's to 80's.
Black Jack and many other imported "retro" confections are carried in specialty candy shops such as Sugar Mountain in Toronto. They're expensive compared with the confections at the local corner store though.
:(
That is good to know. My town don't have either of those stores, but I bet Tulsa has a Cracker Barrel. I will have to check it out. Another one I liked from the same company ,I think, is Beachman's.
Black Jack and its sister gums are (were) also available through the Vermont Country Store. You can get a lot of retro stuff from there.

The best bubble gum available when I was in grade school was the gum that came with the Zip Hockey cards made by Parkhurst. It was thick, juicy, and flavourful with a hint of cherry, and far superior to the thin slab of Bazooka that came with Topps/OPC trading cards.

Topps introduced this Ton o' Gum product in the early seventies for those tykes for whom a little bit of a good thing wasn't enough:

:o
Has a wave of Communism swept this board? Or has everybody just grown old all of a sudden?
:-\
Ally Sheedy said it best - "When you grow up, your heart dies". Luckily I never grew up, so here I am. Bubble Gum still rules. Something us kids used to buy in South Carolina in the early Seventies and stick ALL OVER our school folders and books, were the Fleer Sticky Feet stickers. This is another one that gum card dealers never seem to know about, and give you that look.

While they look pretty, they're definitely not as good as the big O-Pee-Chee penny gumballs that I used to buy in vending machines. The Dubble Bubble gumballs that are straight pink are the really good ones. They have the traditional spicy, sweet Dubble Bubble taste I remember.
Unfortunately, I haven't seen them sold in rolls. I've only seen them sold in quarter vending machines, which is quite the rip-off.

Bazooka 12
Dubble Bubble 5
Bubble Yum 4
Hubba Bubba 3
Pal 2
The silver and the bronze still appear to be up for grabs.

I remeber when hubba bubba came out with chocolate mint gum, man that stuff was the bees knees. Do they still make it?
I'm not sure whether I remember Hubba Bubba chocolate mint or not. I'm sure I never tried it though. I've not found any on store shelves since you inquired about it. I believe it's no longer made.
The battle for the silver and the bronze has now become a three way battle between Dubble Bubble, Bubble Yum and Hubba Bubba. Pal has sadly dropped off the pace.

I got to thinking and remembered it was bubblicious chocolate mint heres a scan of the wrapper. and i looked on the timeless candy source website and it shows it as discontinued. :-\ it was so delicious!!!! i remember going to quick stop in gradeschool and buying it and other candies before school started in the mornings. i would then sell it to kids for 25 cents a piece. it was quite popular and a favorite ,and candy cigarettes were too, (most parents wouldnt let their kids have them. so they bought them from me.) my candy income alone supplied me with all the gum and comics i bought for myself. and i got alot of good trades too. one kid traded me a new stomper truck when they first came out for a box of candy cigs., and one time i traded a single piece of gum for a giant rubber spider, i wish i still had it. it was awesome! i was the candy dealer of my school. i was so scandaless! >:D

That's economics for you! Outlawing an economic good thus restricting supply just acts to raise the price.

Dubble Bubble Original Flavor gum has been marketed in bulk Halloween bags for around twenty years.
While it has a very pleasant tutti-frutti taste, the problem I have is with the word "original" on the label. The Dubble Bubble I remember from the late fifties and early sixties was sold in little white wrapped rectangles for a penny and had a very long lasting spicy sweet flavour.
The Dubble Bubble I remember is still available but now costs a dime, has purple-pink wrappers and is most often sold out of brightly coloured little buckets:

The other penny gum slabs that most commonly competed with Dubble Bubble for kids' coppers in the early sixties were Bazooka. They looked like this:

An old ad for Dubble Bubble.

Wow! I've never seen that one!

It clearly predates Zip codes so it appeared no later than 1963. I'm guessing it could have appeared in Boy's Life magazine.
???
Dubble Bubble ads were in comic books in the 50s (maybe even the 40s)--they all starred "the unfortunately-named Pud" (in the words of cartoonist Scott Shaw!)

Great issue, most of my comics are the early Teen scene variety.
This was pretty popular in the early seventies. Fruity taste, but not great for bubbles.

They looked like the top pic you have of the slab. We used to sneak up to a soda shoppe called Heidi's that was on the highway. Circa 1973-74ish. They were a penny apiece maybe 2 pennies.
From Wiki:
The Topps company expanded the flavors, making them Original, Strawberry Shake, Cherry Berry, Watermelon Whirl, and Grape Rage. The Strawberry flavor is packaged in a pink and white wrapper and the Grape in a purple and white wrapper.
I only had access in the early/ mid-70s to Cherry, Grape and Original.
The 1970s
With the 1970s series, it's deja vu all over again as the comics are re-issued for the third time (and more, later in the decade). The 'D' designation in the code number has been dropped. The codes now start with the year of release. Another difference is most of the individual series have expanded from 42 to 45 comics and generally the numbering is now continuous from one set to the next. Throughout the decade the individual comic 'values' increase in worth towards prizes. For variation collectors, most of the sets have alternate versions to chase after.
I've extended this section into 1981 as the dividing point for good reason: the 81 series marks the last appearance of the original Bazooka Joe and his gang. Next time we see the comics, Joe has a new gang! They are completely revamped. But in the meantime ...
"Whole Number" series
#271-315
'Cherry' version
"Whole Number" series
#271-315
'Grape' version
This very unusual series seems to fit between D-10 and the 71 series. For lack of a better name, I call it the "Whole Number" series. I'm open to suggestions. The set contains 45 comics ranging from #271-315. Where did Topps pull those numbers from? It's an anomaly. All comics are reprints from earlier 'D' series. The most distinguishing feature is all comics are found in both pink and purple versions that correspond with Cherry or Grape Bazooka bubble gum.
These are the packs of Magic Colors cigarettes I remember:

Like the cigars, the cigarettes were produced by the Philadelphia Chewing Gum Company under the Swell brand name. The Hysterical Mothers of America Opposed to Just About Everything combined with the Anti-Nico Nazis to get the cigarettes banned in most places twenty or so years ago.

Bazooka has become hard to find. It used to be owned by Topps, the card collecting company out out PA.
I don't know about now...
Bazooka is still a Topps name brand in the States. It was produced in Canada under licence by O-Pee-Chee in London until sometime in the nineties. It's now produced in Canada under licence by Concord Confections near Toronto. Bazooka is, however, tough to find anywhere these days, particularly in the little rectangles that once sold for a penny.

I just popped a couple pieces of Dubble Bubble Sour Cherry Gum into my mouth, while filling treat bags, and I am hooked! It is delicious! And it's a smooth chew that makes for enormous bubbles! I have found my new favorite bubble gum! See, it's never too late to find a new gum!
Charp, I'll have to try that. The classic flavor Double Bubble has always been my first choice in gum, but the sour cherry does sounds great.
I also treated myself to a Black Cherry Blow Pop!! I'm livin' it up like a rock star! Ha!!

Bazooka and Dubble Bubble completely dominated the penny gum market in my neck of the woods when I was a kid. Black Cat licorice bubble gum could occasionally be found but I can't recall seeing Super Bubble or any other brands.

Super Bubble was only available in original flavor when I was a kid, but I would have gladly traded it for licorice flavored gum. I never ever saw Black Cat growing up. MY CHILDHOOD WAS ROBBED. >:(
Black Cat Bubble Gum was not only delicious but it was also simply the best for blowing bubbles. It beat hell out of Dubble Dubble or Bazooka when it came to the size you could manage for a penny or two.

When I was going door-to-door in the early sixties, little packs of Chiclets in any of about a half a dozen flavours were a common Halloween treat:

I didn't much like Chiclets at the time because they weren't good for blowing bubbles. These days though I'm happy to get any kind of gum sweetened with good honest sugar as opposed to some sort of chemical carcinogen.

Grape Bazooka
Hmmmmm. My memory may be hazy here but I seem to remember Topps (O-Pee-Chee in Canada) releasing Graperoo first:
And then Ton 'O' Grape Gum:
I'm not sure I actually remember Grape Bazooka specifically.
I doubt of course that there was any difference in the formulation among the three products.
:-\
I remember seeing Ton 'O' Gum on store shelves beginning in about 1970:

I'm not sure whether I specifically remember seeing the Ton "O" Grape Gum or the Bazooka Cherry Gum in a thick slab as opposed to a Graperoo type roll though:
Maybe these other kinds of gum were not specifically marketed in Canada or maybe I just don't remember them because by the 1970's I was already in university and a new kind of bubble gum was not so much of a big deal to me that the event seared itself into my memory. I'm not saying I stopped buying bubble gum once I passed a certain age; only that a new brand wasn't such a big deal to me any longer.
One thing's for sure though. The Ton 'O' Gum and the big Bazooka wrappers are now themselves highly collectible, and I'd sure love to add some specimens to my own bubble gum card wrapper collection!

I don't recall Li'l Abner being associated with Bazooka. Every Halloween was sure to include a handful of Bazookas in the treat bag. Every Bazooka I remember had a Joe Bazooka Comic inside the wrapper. Don't remember
ever seeing a Li'l Abner strip inside. And I would have remembered that.
I was a huge fan of Li'l Abner as a kid. Partly, it was because I loved the artwork and the funny characters. But, also because I was enthralled with the gorgeous female characters - still am.
I never chewed gum.
Quote from: Monsters For Sale on November 15, 2017, 03:49:39 AMI don't recall Li'l Abner being associated with Bazooka.... Every Bazooka I remember had a Joe Bazooka Comic inside the wrapper. Don't remember ever seeing a Li'l Abner strip inside. And I would have remembered that.
I don't believe there ever were any Bazooka Li'l Abner comics. The above item was part of sales catalogs distributed to merchants only.

I prefer the more delicate featured early renditions of Daisy Mae and the other female characters such as the one below before Frank Frazetta started ghosting for Al Capp.

As kids, our favourite was called "Big Charlie", which was a thick, pink strip about 12" long. Lasted a looooooong time.
By the way, I'm famous in a chewing gum book:

Quote from: Hepcat on November 14, 2017, 01:28:14 PMMany of us here go back to the days when gumball machines required only a penny. And these two staples of every red-blooded young kid's existence were a penny each:

Sadly everything has changed. I haven't seen Bazooka Bubble Gum in the little bricks for thirty or so years.
Tubs like this of Dubble Bubble can still be found in some variety stores in Toronto:
It's usually this stuff though labelled "America's Original":
While it has a very pleasant tutti-frutti taste, the flavour doesn't last. Moreover I have a serious problem with the word "Original" on the label. The original Dubble Bubble that I remember from the late fifties and early sixties was sold in the little rectangles with white wrappers for a penny and had a very long lasting spicy sweet flavour. The Dubble Bubble I remember is still available in the buckets in the occasional store but has purple-pink wrappers and now costs a dime:
To be fair the little rectangles are about 50% bigger than the ones I used to buy as a kid.
Nor is Dubble Bubble produced by Fleer anymore. The Dubble Bubble name brand was purchased from Fleer by Concord Confections just north of Toronto in 1998. Concord was then acquired by Tootsie Roll Industries in 2003.

Sadly the fascist anti-smoking brigade has managed to force the Cigarettes off the market and make the Cigars very difficult to find outside of (expensive) specialty stores in my neck of the woods. Bastards! Just because I don't smoke doesn't mean I should be denied my bubble gum!

Leaf Spheroids are among the very best gumballs I've ever tasted:
I used to be able to buy them in rolls of six(?) similar to these Dubble Bubble Cry Baby rolls:
The Spheroids were a lot better though since the sour crystals were in the center of the gumball leaving the outside of the gumball nice and smooth in texture. The Cry Baby gumballs have a rough texture.
Sadly I've not seen Spheroids for perhaps fifteen years.

Where did you find that write-up?
???
Quote from: Hepcat on October 23, 2017, 03:15:58 PMAnd since Halloween is just a week away, here are a few more pictures lifted off the net of the most monsterrific bubble gum tattoo set of them all, the Topps Monster Tatoo set featuring artwork by the legendary Jack Davis that Topps released in 1962:

The tattoos were printed on the inside of this wrapper:
Topps then re-issued these tattoos in 1974-75 on the inside of these four wrappers:
(https://d28lcup14p4e72.cloudfront.net/220100/6801612/MonsterTattooBubbleGum1975_02.png) (https://d28lcup14p4e72.cloudfront.net/220100/6801613/MonsterTattooBubbleGum1975_03.png)

The re-issued tattoos differ in three ways:
1. The ones issued in 1962 are not numbered while the ones issued in 1974-75 have a number as well as an A or B series designation:
2. The ones issued in 1962 are coloured with darker inks with purple being a popular colour. The ones from 1974-75 feature lighter pastel colouring.
3. Finally, it seems that for the 1974-75 re-issue the Topps graphics department employed white-out to remove details from Davis' original drawings thus simplifying them and making them less likely to smudge/smear during the printing process. The original pictures from 1962 are in the top row while the simplified artwork is in the bottom row below:
Multifold lines and inking can be seen to have been removed from the old hag's hair in particular.
However many of these tattoos there are, they're a delight to non-sport card collectors, monster enthusiasts and Jack Davis fans alike. Bubble gum and tattoos are after all a very tough combo to beat.

Bazooka, bubble gum, cigars, bubble gum cigarettes, gold mine bubble gum nuggets, and that hard as a rock slab of gum that came with every pack of bubble gum cards. Good times.

Not only are Shelby's Super Duper Blo Bubble wrappers very cool in their own right, but they bear a very close resemblance to the Big Bubble Riddle wrappers issued during the same time period by Hamilton Chewing Gum Ltd. which was based in Hamilton a leisurely ninety minute drive from my home town of London, Ontario. The similarity was not a coincidence. Hamilton Chewing Gum Ltd. was founded in 1930 by John F. Wilsdon the son of Shelby Gum founder John J. Wilsdon. So while the two companies were legally completely independent entities, there was a very real connection.

Anyone who ever bought the Parkhurst Hockey cards issued until 1963-64 will attest that the gum included beat any other gum issued in card packs (Topps, Fleer, Leaf, etc.) hands down! It was juicy, (cherry) flavourful and absolutely delicious!
But either Parkhurst had stopped offering penny Zip Bubble Gum by the time my awareness of penny candy began in 1958 or Parkhurst wasn't able to carve out a niche for Zip in O-Pee-Chee's home turf of London, Ontario. So I don't remember ever seeing penny Zip Bubble Gum; only Bazooka, Dubble Bubble and black licorice flavoured Black Cat (the last being uncommon).
