EXCLUSIVE: MGM is announcing that "BOND 23" is set to go into production in late 2011. Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of EON Productions, together with Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, the Co-Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., today announced that the 23rd James Bond film will have a worldwide release on November 9, 2012. Daniel Craig will be returning as the legendary British secret agent, with Sam Mendes directing a screenplay written by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan.

Sean Connery has always been the definitive Bond to me. Action Hero and charisma.
Roger Moore will always be Simon Templar, The Saint to me--but before him, I like Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig.

Sean is Bond...but, Daniel Craig is a close 2nd...I like Craig's performance as Bond, because he uses strength and wits, instead of fantastic gadgets....

Timothy Dalton is easily my favourite Bond. He played the character closest to the one in the book - grim, lethal and  businesslike. This was deliberate on his part. He first read the books before playing the part and set out to be the character as originally envisaged by Ian Fleming.

Dalton could have been a good Bond, but the stories were weak.  Lazenby was a so so Bond, but the story was great and the ski segments were state of the art back then. Plus Diana rigg is a goddess.

We'll that put him ahead of the filmakers, who tended to ignore the books when writing the screenplays.

Opera Ghost, I've seen several of the George Sanders Saint movies and they are quite fun! As for Bond, I have a pretty nice 007 collection of toys and film items and the collection starts and ends with the Sean C. years......Bud

Dalton had a major guest role in Dr Who last year as the Time Lord Rassilon and he was quite good. I also like Daniel Craig alot as Bond, I think he is very close to how Ian Fleming wrote Bond in the books. I was never a big fan of Roger Moore, but I think that is more the fault of the film's storylines themselves than Moore's portrayal. I did like Dalton but as was mentioned, his two films were very weak-I would have liked to see him continue in the role. I also liked Brosnan as well, but Sean Connery is by far my favorite Bond.

I agree. I like Daniel Craig as Bond. My praise for Timothy Dalton should not be taken as disparaging toward the other fellows. I like all of Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig as James Bond. Roger Moore though struck me as lacking the requisite menace for the role. He just seemed a touch too suave and urbane to be the Bond in Ian Fleming's books.

This Wikipedia article contains an excellent summary of Timothy Dalton's history and take on the role of James Bond:

Sam Neill was then screen-tested for the part of Bond, but was ultimately rejected.... now that would have been scary.

I've heard a rumor that Jimmy Stewart was one of those considered for the part of Bond.  Somehow, I know he was a great talent as an actor, but I just can't imagine him speaking with a Brit accent.

For me the definitive Bond is Sean Connery, though i liked most of the others too.  Wasn't overly thrilled with Lazenby or Dalton, and didn't like Niven's portrayal at all.  I grew up with the Connery Bond as a kid, and I think I just mentally associate him more with the part.  Daniel Craig is doing a great job keeping the legend alive.

I always thought No One could replace Connery as Bond, Until Daniel Craig. Craig's Bond doesn't have to rely on good looks to get the women, doesn't rely on gadgets to get in or out of trouble, He's just plain COOL. And Craig is a good actor.
