Title: Ten Things About You
Post by: Nicole on January 02, 2011, 09:52:25 AM
This one is simple and fun. Tell us ten things that we don't know about you.

Here's mine:

1. Im left-handed.
2. I have an obsession with teashades.
3. I can't snap my fingers.
4. I feel uncomfortable borrowing things from people. If someone loans me something, I get in a rush to return it.
5. I have a kitten that looks like a leopard (bengal cat).
6. I put mayo on French fries.
7. I was once stalked (in real life) by a guy who had an imaginary girlfriend and a scat fetish.
8. I can draw competently, but I paint horribly.
9. I sometimes misuse, mispronounce, or use non-existent words... much to the amusement (and confusion) of people around me.
10. If it's an insect, and it bites or stings, I have a crippling phobia of it. If it's in the house, it is imperative to kill it, or I will not sleep.

1.  I used to be an incredibly dominant pitcher in a seriously competitive Wiffle Ball League (didn't lose a game in the 3 years I competed).  I started out with a sinker/ rising fastball mix, then developed a sweeping slider and a nose to toes curveball with a screwball mixed in.  If my team scored 2 runs, we were a mortal lock.  We always scored 2 runs or more.
2.  I like pickled herring.
3.  I can't stand tomatoes unless they're chopped finely or pureed.
4.  I can draw a little.
5.  I have been told many times I should be an attorney or a talk show host (I have no plans to do either).
6.  My wife wants me to write Romance Novels.
7.  I had braces PUT ON my teeth when I was 19.
8.  I am a big fan of wedgies (giving them)-----just not for a long time.
9.  I never had a 'girls are icky' stage.  I practiced 'my look' in the mirror for hours the night before my 1st day of Kindergarten.
10. I use analogies in essentially every discussion/ debate topic I'm in-----especially at work in meetings.  Sometimes they're ridiculous-------but most people love them.

6. I have been a nail biter for 40+ years
7. I was once the only Cheeseasaurus Rex costumed character in the metro Atlanta area for a year (official Kraft business- not in my personal life)

1. Although my wife always thinks I'm kidding, I honestly believe that since I was young, I've always been attracted to Asian women because I watched so many Godzilla movies.  (although my wife is from the Philippines, not Japan.)
2. Although I like the smell of it brewing, I hate coffee.  (I drink diet Coke like it's water though.)
3. I apparently have a "twin" at one of the local flea markets that sells old coins.  On many occasions people have started to chat with me thinking that I was this other guy.
4. I've tried to learn the flute, piano, and guitar and failed at all three.  The only thing I CAN play is the radio.
5. Growing up, I never had much of an interest at all in westerns and war movies.  In recent years though, I've been watching them a lot.
6. When I was a kid, I would only eat the crust from pizza and spaghetti with butter and cheese.  I wouldn't go near tomato sauce. That issue is long gone and could easily eat pizza daily.
7. Prefer the the Monkees over the Beatles.
8. I don't care for NOSFERATU, Laurel & Hardy, pineapple, or watching sports (except for the Olympics every 4 years).

10. I have never ridden on a motorcycle, shot a real gun (other than a BB gun), or used drugs illegally (but I could tell quite a story about my one legal experience in Amsterdam in 1987).

"Firstly Craig, as an avid Keaton fan I'm begging you to expound on the check story."

Scat-

I met Patty Tobias at a FILM FORUM Keaton fest years ago, when she was just starting her fan group, "The Damfinos." Hearing that I was a classic radio fan, she asked if I knew of copies of Buster's rare radio appearances. I didn't, but said that as a member I'd call AFTRA and see if they had any record of it.

They didn't - but said, "Hey, do you know how to contact Buster's widow? There's a small residual check here for him." Through Patty, I got that to Eleanor (who has since died herself, I think.)

Best,
-Craig

P.S. - And just recently, I finally found the radio show itself for Patty!

This has been very interesting reading! I'd love to follow up on some of these items with some of you. But I figure I need to contribute first, so here we go:

1. I enjoy writing, have had articles on comic books published in Back Issue magazine, co-author a blog on comics and 70s pop culture (see my signature) with a friend, and just started my first fiction project in 15 years. I can't say much, but it involves the Frankenstein Monster, zombies, and alchemists...

2. In college I worked as a veterinary assistant. This was the most interesting and enlightening job I've ever had. it also made me a firm believer in the existence of the soul.

3. I met my husband playing an on-line game called City of Heroes.

4. Despite my blue eyes, brown hair, and light skin, I am one-quarter Native American (Sac and Fox).

9. I would eat BBQ and/or Mexican food every day if I weren't concerned about my health.

10. I love dogs but haven't been able to bring myself to let another one into my life since I lost my last two a few years ago.

Cool!! Thanks Craig!! Keaton was pure genius. Goodness only knows what more he could have given us had he been able to finance and produce his own films like Chaplin (rather than having the Studios sticking their decidedly un-funny noses into his later work).

Hello, All...

I'm Left handed, and a MEGA-KLUTZ
An Anglican
A retired Library Worker who reads everything I can get my hands on.

I ADORE cats, and regularly donate bags of cat chow to the local shelter
I'm absolutely terrified of any kind of worm or catapillar or grub, and could probably outshriek Elsa Lanchester and Una O'Connor combined
I drink tons of black coffee, love Chinese and Thai food and use Vietnamese Chili Sauce instead of Ketchup

I love to write, collect photographs, and regularly sketch the PROJECT RUNWAY Challenges.  I am also, unfortunately, a packrat.
I have a liking for Liturgical Needlepoint, and once worked on my church's kneelers..(the backgrounds)
I dress like an old-time beatnick, go barefoot and am a gentle combination of Southern California Democrat and British Monarchist.  (meaning that I get cheesed off a lot, but am extremely decorous about how I express it.)

My not so secret wish is to get a genuine Colin Clive autograph before I die.....after which I shall get it from the original source.  (smile)

This is a very interesting thread! Great stuff here. My turn:

1. Created the UMA on November 6th, 2002. My life has never been the same since.

2. I'm 48 yrs old. Happily married for 13 yrs with two wonderful boys 11 and 5 yrs old. Staying married has had its challenges though.

3. I used to live the rock-n-roll life back in the late 80's. I was a lead vocalist in a shock rock band named Vile and then Mondo Trasho.  Played hard, drank hard, and fell hard before finally hanging it up in 1997. Saved by the Grace of God in 2001.

4. I'm a mall walker sometimes walking 4 - 6 miles every morning at the Mall Of America.

5. I own my own company in the lawn and landscaping trade.

6. I love watching the NBA despite all of its blemishes and some of the overpaid hoodlums. Longtime Lakers fan! Still hoping the Timberwolves will compete one day with the rest of the playoff teams.

7. Drink my coffee black, am addicted to TAB soda pop, and appreciate a fine handcrafted ale usually every night.

8. Love sushi, love Mexican food, love McDonald's on occasion (filet-o-fish rocks!), and appreciate fine dining at expensive restaurants (when I can afford it).

9. I hate Minnesota winters and I hate snow. Would trade places with Scatter anytime. Gimme some of that Florida humidity you loathe!  ;)

10. I occasionally like to retreat into my man-cave for weeks at a time. Can be a loner at times. Then suddenly .. I need to be around people again. I'm weird like that.

Disappearing into a man cave for weeks on end sounds like heaven to me!!

I've noticed that several UMA members are left-handed - if it's true that a lot of left-hamded people are geniuses, that says something about this great army.

I'm wrong-handed, by the way...

;D Is that a "Left Handed" pat on the back, UP?  LOL  ::)  ::)  thrhrt

thrhrt I have thought a lot about people who are left-handed and how a larger percentage of them are geniuses; compared to how a smaller percentage of right-handed people are geniuses.

My conclusion is based in a large part on two major points which I've observed:
     1.  Many people who are left-handed are dyslexic or they see written letters in reverse order such as - they may see the word "drum" but understand its spelling as "durm".
     2.  Many "left-handeds" have trouble performing tasks in an "ordinary" manner i.e. when writting in "script" they usually can't write in a forward slant but have a backwards slant.
These points remind me of the old addage that says, "Those who can, DO!  Those who can't do. TEACH!!"
In other words, if you find fulfilment in your ability to do things in an "ordinary manner", then you live out your life producing things like:
     1.  By going into manufacturing
     2.  Becoming a Draftsman
     3.  Go into movie/TV production by becoming a Grip, Best Boy etc.
Those who can't do things in an "ordinary" manner find fulfillment in "inventing" things like:
     1.  Designing manufacturing processes so that cars can get better milage, are more appealing to people and cost less for the manufacturer
     2.  Plot the stars and predict stellar movement and the formation of nebula
     3.  Become a fiction writer an invent a "new world" from nothing to something, or a Director and see a vision of the screenplay that resonates with the audience

This is my conclusion.  It might be right or....it might be a wrong premise or conclusion entirely.  thrhrt  ???

I just wanted to throw my two-cents in here (and that's about all my advice is worth!): I studied voice acting in San Francisco for about a year at a professional studio. While I learned a lot, I eventually came to feel I was being scammed, as the teacher/owner kept telling me I was almost ready to make my demo, but would then suggest another $300+ class to take. This was happening to many of us, and between the cost and the frustration, I quit. I sort of wish I hadn't now!

But the thing is, with the improvements in technology, you may be able to make your own high-quality demo. One of the things you should try to figure out before you do so, is what type of voice talent are you? Is your voice best suited to doing characters, like for cartoons or video games? Do you have the kind of natural, smooth voice that works well in narrating movies, or reading books? Can you do a little of both? Figure out what your key market is and shape your demo to that.

If you can work with someone to refine your abilities, to teach you how to breathe in front of the mic, how to respond to direction, how to pump up or pull back your performance, that would be very useful. Even regular acting classes are helpful in this regard. There are a few books on the market but nothing beats one on one feedback.

The video game market is a great place for character VO actors. They need all kinds of voices, from heroic to goofy to non-human. The nice thing is, a lot of work can be done remotely now, so you don't have to travel so much. Look at trade magazines and look online. I've never used any of the online job agencies, but places like voices.com may be helpful.

Now you guys have got me thinking about trying to be a VO actor again!  :)

Some of these may already be known about me, but here goes anyway:

1.   I've fallen off a 40 foot bridge and stood up immediately after landing on my back.  My landing pad was a rock-strewn mud puddle, littered with railroad spikes.

2.   I was a Professional Wrestler on & off for several years - I never became famous and did not get rich.

3.   I've been married for 23 years.

4.   I held the Indiana State Benchpress Record (a long time ago) by breaking the record, set by Tom Zupancic, former strength coach for the Indianapolis Colts.

5.   I have an OCD-type deal where I sometimes, time stoplights, commercials, etc.  Plus, I sometimes count my steps as I'm walking.

6.   I once won a body painting contest, held at the Muncie Mall.  Garfield creator, Jim Davis, competed in it also.

7.   I have an unfinished tattoo of KING KONG on my right shoulder/arm.

8.   I love Mexican & Tex/Mex food.

9.   I don't really drink alcohol very often.

10. I've never seen a ghost - at least, I don't think I have...

When I spoke to Joe, he said that I should make my own Demo, find a local agency and their requirements and send them my demo.  As for the rest, I told him that way back when I was in my 11th grade English class, my teacher told me that I should go into television, radio or movies!  She was also one of the first people to encourage the legendary James Dean to go into acting!  In 12th grade, I got my broadcasting license and was a D.J. for about a year before I went to college.

I was in two school plays in High School and later I was in Summer Stock at a local theater.  In my local church, I acted and directed approximately 30 plays.  The last was an Easter play about the two thevies that were crucified with Jesus.  I was very avant guard, minimalistic.  No props, empty stage.  Just two men speaking to each other and the audience.  I directed and costarred.  Around 30 minutes with our arms stretched out!  :o

I could go on about the type of training I've had (my wife would say "...and on and on and on...!) but that's enough.  As far as the TYPE of talent I have done both.  I taped part of the KJV Bible for church use for "shut-ins" and I've done characters (think kind of like Disney's Goofy), a mean, old man {think of Walter Brennon) and used various, regional voicings.  8)

If you are still with me you must have a lot of patience or else nothing better to do!  I'm done!

Yes, our diversity is one of our greatest assets here at the UMA.

I wasn't actually pointing to any one specific post by anyone in particular.  Sometimes it's what the next person may say in response to someone's statement(s) that becomes problematic.  This is a great thread and I've been enjoying it immensely.  I just don't want it to go sour.

There was a belief that the left hand'side was associated with evil.
http://www.anythinglefthanded.co.uk/lh-info/myths.html (http://www.anythinglefthanded.co.uk/lh-info/myths.html)

The root of the word "sinister" means "from the left".  My mother-in-law, who was herself left-handed, tried to discourage my daughter, who is left-handed,  from using her left hand when she was a baby.

There is also the fact that the majority of many things (like scissors, desks, computer mouse, guitars, golf clubs, etc.) are made for right-handed people, especially years ago.  You either have to search out the specially made stuff or try to work on being ambidextrous.  I have a feling that my mother-in-law was trying to help my daughter avoid this situation.

People use and say superstitious things everyday, often without even realizing it.  If someone sneezes, people often say, "God bless you."  The modern rationalization for this is that the heart "skips a beat" when you sneeze.  It goes further back to a time when people thought that when you sneezed, your soul temporarily left your body and you could then be possessed by evil spirits.  My guess is that people say the spray of a sneeze and thought that what they were seeing was the person's soul/spirit.  That's just my theory though.

Apologies Rob, I certainly wasn't referring to a specific case, and MOST certainly wasn't commenting on your mother-in-law. Just commenting on Fester's post about the role that superstition played in this in years past. I can see the practical difficulties which might cause someone to want to re-train someone back in the day, but that wasn't my point. I was specifically referring to those folks driven solely by superstition. Again, sorry if I inadvertently offended you. It certainly wasn't my intent.

My understanding of the "God Bless You" after sneezing was that sneezing fits were an early symptom of bubonic plague, and therefore the blessing became customary in Medievel Europe due to the prevalance of plague.

Oh, I didn't think that you were indicating my mother-in-law at all and neither was I for that matter.  :P  She passed away about 7-8 years ago, but while she was alive, despite being my mother-in-law (Dun-Dun-Dun!!), she was a wonderful woman and I got along with her just fine.  Mother-in-law jokes didn't apply to me.  lol

As for the origin of "God Bless You" a little more digging turns up that no one knows for sure.

That was my Dad's reason for 'converting' me. Although perhaps he also suspected that I could wind up an evil criminal mastermind if I were to be left-handed.  >:D

I am right handed so I didn't need to be "converted".  However, I used to work for GM on the factory floor and to do my job (without becoming too tired), I learned to do each job two different ways with each hand.  So I could do a job 4 different ways!!  8)  My General foreman (who was a friend of mine outside of work) once told me that he and the plant manager were behind me (and his words) "marveling" at the way I did my job.  The plant manager said that I Looked "like a machine".  :o  I can do almost any thing left handed except swing a baseball bat!  :-[  thrhrt

I used to whistle songs all the time.  For awhile, I worked at a Christian owned lock factory "Best Lock, International" (which had a lock featured in the Christmas movie "Prancer" were bad guys locked up the raindeer.  If you watch it, you have to look fast when the young girl finds him and you'll see the lock with the logo "Best" on the lock).  I worked in "final inspection" in an area that was fairly quiet.  I began to whistle Christian Hymns and other songs when all of a sudden I would hear, "I love that song Don, Do you know "______ _____ ___", different Christian songs which I would whistle and then get 2 or 3 more requests at a time!! :o  8)  thrhrt

Did he help bury Boris' old friends? I read that folks who were down on their luck and were friends with Boris often ended up cremated and put in his garden so they'd be close to him!

I can't whistle a tune. I've been trying for 46 years. Can't do it. Now, I can blow out your eardrum using my fingers in any combination to whistle, but the act of simply pursing the lips and whistling a tune sadly eludes me.

Same here, Scatter.  I can't whistle worth a tinker's darn.  Can't read music, either.  I was a choir singer for 40 years, until the asthma got me, and I did everything by ear.  Doesn't bother me, though.  Judy Garland couldn't sight read either, and she turned out fine!

1.  I love BIG dogs.  English Mastiffs, Newfies, Great Danes, Rottweilers, Bullmastiffs.

3.  I have worked in the human services field for 17 years and have a background in Psychology.
4.  I am not a morning person.
5.  The theme to JAWS precluded my introduction at my wedding reception.  They turned the lights down real low and started the music very softly, building to a crescendo... 10.  I played the role of Samson in a 6th grade Theology play---the pictures are beyond embarrassing.

Ten Things About Me:

1. I really like to cook, and actually am pretty darn good at it.
2. I've met Danzig, Jerry Only, and Michale Graves from the Misfits, but have yet to meet Doyle.
3. My first speaking lines as an actor were with Al Pacino in a movie called "You Don't Know Jack", and yes, they were cut out of the film :(

5. I paint movie monsters and horror and Halloween themed art (and some pin up girls here and there).
6. There are certain foods that I refuse to eat because they make me queasy (snails, frog legs, pickled herring, and brussel sprouts are a few).
7. I believe in the golden rule.
8. Most of the stuff I like would be considered a bit/a lot retro (as my screen name and website would imply)....cars, art, movies, etc.
9. I like heavy metal music (Sabbath, Priest, Iron Maiden, Slough Feg, and Motorhead  to name a few....the older I get, the more I like classical music).
10. I use to own a bunch of cool monster toys (like the AHI monsters, the monster old maid cards, and lots of other neat stuff) that ended up getting broken or found their way in a garbage can). If only I knew now that I knew then (and had a time machine).

I also teared up at Uncula's words. He was a kind and wonderful friend. We had so much fun on Facebook....a couple of sillyhearts posting all kinds of stuff to each other. I miss him.

1 I talk to toys. All the time. When I'm depressed I have no desire to talk it out with people so I get one of my toys and pour my heart out to them. They're great listeners.

2 My dream job is robotics engineer. I just don't know if I'm smart enough.

3 I am fascinated with artificial life and stories involving robots, golems, toys coming to life or anything involving artificial beings.

4 Electronic pets probably saved my life

5 I prefer puppets, costumes and animatronics to CGI where creature effects are concerned but grudgingly acknowledge that some things would be impossible to do without CGI

6 When I was growing up I wanted to make monsters for the movies for a living

7 I was also fascinated with Bigfoot and in fact still am.

8 I prefer toys and robots to people. As a kid I took a lot of abuse both from my father and my classmates. I could always turn to my toys and they were a great comfort.

9 I hate being human and would transfer into a robotic body in an instant were it an option

10 When I watch monster movies I always root for the monsters

5. I'm not good at crafts or building things but can do a good 'temporary fix' on most things using masting tape.

7. I dog and cat sit for friends.
8. I hate cigarette smoke.
9. I don't like that people drink & drive or drink and take medications.

Flower- I am now 100 percent sure that you are as cool and interesting as I thought you were!  ahem...except for the ketchup/relish thing.
We have a lot in common, but I can only deal with one spoiled cat....if there were more animals around here, I would have to apologize to them daily due to Caddie's antics. He's a real piece of furry work!
Bravo on your list, but sorry to hear that there will be no Liszt from you! HA! I think I'm sooo funny! My grandson rolls his eyes daily over my pun attempts!
But seriously, I bet you can play that piano way better than you think   :)

Yes .. I'm often shunned by ketchup/relish people .. I'm used to it by now.

I do love mustards and mayos .... http://www.mustardmaker.com/ (http://www.mustardmaker.com/)

Also, I love sales and coupons .. I'm all smiles and cheers when the weekly flyers arrive.

Oh yeah- Mustard is the best condiment ever! But there is a time and plce for its brothers (ketchup & mayo) and its weird cousin relish.
I don't seek out coupons, but my daughter (the dentist) is a coupon freak! She even clips them for things I buy (old people stuff) and gives them to me  :)

Hahahaha! She always gives me coupons for Advil, cleaning products and un-glamorous toiletries. Especially stuff like weird shampoos for gray hair/scalp itch- which I do not yet need.....or do I...
Anyways, I gladly accept them and use a few now and then. I will not be using the Fiber tablet coupons until next year  :)

1. I'm a stockbroker.

2, I like ancient history. I'm particularly fond of the Roman Empire and often wonder whether the world would be a better place today had it endured and slowly expanded for another 1000 years.

3. I don't drink, smoke or take drugs. That's not because I'm such a goody-goody. It's because I'm determined to rebel from the norm. It's just another way I alienate myself from society. I guess I just want to feel smugly superior to "everybody else".

4. I don't just dabble. I'm a hardcore collector. DC and other comics, sport and non-sport cards, premium coins, model kits, slot car kits, board games, lunch boxes, sparkle paint sets, milk and pop bottles, etc, etc.

5. I'm fit. I'm a compulsive stair climber and walker. But I love muscle cars, drag racing, stock car racing and slot car racing too.

6. I like a lot of "bad" foods - pizza, fried chicken, hamburgers, corn dogs, BBQ ribs, steak and lobster with drawn butter, fish & chips, breaded shrimp, kugelis, perogies, grilled cheese sandwiches, BLT sandwiches, Lucky Charms, Count Chocula, Trix, Sugar Frosted Flakes, potato chips, Vachon Passion Flakies, chocolate bars, milkshakes, Coke, bubble gum, etc, etc. But remember, I'm still fit!

7. I'm a big fan of Lithuanian basketball, the London Knights, the Western Mustangs, the Edmonton Eskimos and the Chicago Blackhawks, and to a lesser extent, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets, New York Jets and the Oakland Raiders. I'm a hated enemy of the Montreal Canadiens, New York Yankees, San Francisco 49ers and the New England Patriots.

8. I love both travelling by train and would like to build an outdoor garden railroad some day.

9. Not only do I like cats, I really like foxes and all members of the weasel family as well.

10. I'm a stereophile with a wonderful sound system. I'm still addicted to vinyl and treasure my high end turntable. My favourite bands include the Rolling Stones, Doors, Animals, Cream, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Who, Kinks, Blondie and garage rock and blues rock in general.

4. My youngest son likes "smooky" things like daddy
5. My dad sparked my interest in Monster things at a tender young age from working in a haunted house, records, books, monster movies, toys, and Halloween costumes
6. I have won multiple costume contests with prizes ranging from a tub of bubble gum to $500 dollars and vintage toys, I once won a limbo contest while in costume
7. I collect monsters, lunchboxes, games, vintage Star Wars, vintage Masters of the Universe, GI*JOE, Marvel Secret Wars, Robert E. Howard stuff, Conan, comic books, coins, vintage Halloween, newspapers with WWII, Pearl Harbor, JFK assassination, first man on the moon, World Trade Center 9/11, books, and other various ephemera of my youth
8. My backyard is the mountain and I enjoy camping, hiking, backpacking, spelunking, rock climbing, mountaineering, canyoneering, and hunting

1. I'm a huge fan of the adults-only cartoon series "Drawn Together."
2. I love restaurant reality shows like "Restaurant: Impossible," "Restaurant Stakeout," and "Bar Rescue."
3. I love tattoos and tattoo art, but can't be tattooed because I have psoriasis.
4. I love cats and dogs, but only own cats now that I live in an apartment.
5. My brother still lives in NJ and also loves monster movies, but doesn't collect anything but sports memorabilia.
6. I'm not a sports fan, at all.
7. I used to collect movie soundtrack albums, but stopped when most movies started sucking. The soundtracks I love the most: "The Odd Couple" and "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World!"
8. I was once paid for a magazine article with a silver mylar repro of the original "Night of the Living Dead" poster, signed by all the surviving cast and crew. I never wrote for that magazine again.
9. I was on the Horror Committee of Joe Bob Briggs' Board of Drive-In Experts for his fanzine "We Are the Weird" (later renamed "The Joe Bob Report").
10. Although an atheist, I'm also an ordained minister in the Church of Gospel Ministry of Chula Vista, CA. I've officiated at three weddings and one vow renewal ceremony.

1. As an elective course in college, I took a class in Anti-Terrorism, taught by a retired CIA operative.
2. I went to a critic's screening in NYC for "Godzilla 1985," and the only other critic there was the NY Daily News' The Phantom of the Movies.
3. At a college critics' screening of "Starman," John Carpenter told me he made the car in "Christine" inherently evil instead of haunted by its former owner, because he didn't want to shoot any scenes of a rotted corpse behind the steering wheel after making "The Fog."
4. At a college critics' screening of "Gung Ho," director Ron Howard told me he wants to make a really scary horror movie one day, but he's afraid he'll screw it up.
5. I still don't understand most of what went on in "Videodrome."
6. The neighborhood I grew up in was a Mafia haven, and is written about in the non-fiction true-crime book "To Drop a Dime."
7. I remember when movies longer than 2 1/2 hours had intermissions. The last one I saw in a theater was Roman Polanski's "Tess."
8. I wrote a six-part series on the Universal Monsters for "Horror Biz" magazine.
9. My mother started collecting Tinker Bell toys at the age of 77.
10. This will be the last list I do in this thread.

Let's see: Ten things about me.

1. I am not overweight--I'm under tall.  If my height and weight were proportional,
I'd have to be about 10 feet tall.
2. I have no musical ability.  This, despite my parents insisting on music lessons.
3. I have no artistic ability.  I Cannot draw, sculpt, paint, or carve.  I'm even lousy at connect the dots.
4. I read a lot, but not as much as I used to:  I'm down to 75-80 books a year.
5. Ridiculously over educated.  BA in History/anthropology. MA in History.
And I work in a plasma center.
6. Lousy at math.  Loved science, but I could not figure out numbers.
7. I wear trifocals. (Maybe related to #4)
8. Amateur astronomer. (never a chance at being a pro--see #6)
9. I have not seen a movie in a theater in years.  The last one: Troy
10. Really pretty boring.

Nothing much has changed.

I agree. Everyone here is so strange and creepy... and I absolutely love it.

And I have class again on Monday, so I think I'll chat her up then. Thanks for the words of encouragement everyone!

An interesting detail here. Nicole, who started this thread, was a very active member on this board with 1706 posts up until 5 January 2011. I joined on 6 January 2011. Nicole made only one more post after I joined on 21 January 2011. Coincidence? Or do you think there's a causal connection here?

???

Wrote this in January, 2011:

Let's see: Ten things about me.

1. I am not overweight--I'm under tall.  If my height and weight were proportional,
I'd have to be about 10 feet tall.
2. I have no musical ability.  This, despite my parents insisting on music lessons.
3. I have no artistic ability.  I Cannot draw, sculpt, paint, or carve.  I'm even lousy at connect the dots.
4. I read a lot, but not as much as I used to:  I'm down to 75-80  books a year.
5. Ridiculously over educated.  BA in History/anthropology. MA in History.
And I work in a plasma center.
6. Lousy at math.  Loved science, but I could not figure out numbers.
7. I wear trifocals. (Maybe related to #4)
8. Amateur astronomer. (never a chance at being a pro--see #6)
9. I have not seen a movie in a theater in years.  The last one: Troy
10. Really pretty boring.

Nothing much has changed.

Hey, Dave... don't sell yourself short.  You used lotsa numbers in that thread.  :o

1. Cadbury Cream Eggs have me by the balls.

2. Aside from monters and comics I'm a gear head. I love motorcycles and anything related.

3. I require a good amount of "me time" Whether it's reading, writing, playing an instrument or just listining to music or a movie in the background while dusting my collection, once a week I like a nurse a drink and just be alone.

4. I believe that Respect and Courtesy are the highest laws. I don't care who you worship or don't where you came from, the color of your skin, sexual preference or anything else, it doesn't phase me in the least...having said that if I hold a door open for you and you don't say "thank you" I will more than likely try to pile drive you through a coffee table...that drives me friggin bannanas!

5. I used to suffer with really bad anxiety. I don't anymore :)

6. I could screw up a relationship with the girl of my dreams in about 10 seconds flat. I've become a bit of a serial dater my own mom say's...and I quote "It's because you have become a shallow a--" thanks mom! :) Seriously though I need to work on this, not getting any younger.

7. I have 5 tattoos and one of them is in script over my heart and reads "Strength Beyond Strength", I love those words and it's the title to my favorite Pantera song. (R.I.P Dime!)

8. I am a rabid Philadelphia Eagles fan. I also live about 10 minutes from Giant Stadium......life hasnt been easy!

9. I go to the gym almost every day after work and I'm a firm believer in exercise. I also found that being stronger has helped make me a better motorcyclist--with that if I skip the gym too many days in a row or don't ride my bike for a few days...I start getting a little annoyed.

10. I am almost never satisfied with myself. Which is probably why I gravitate towards things that can almost never be "completed" I can always do better in the gym, I can always do better on my bike, have a bigger collection of monster goodness, do a better job with band or at work etc. I'm competitive with myself almost to a fault.

BONUS: I found the UMA while recovering from shoulder labrum surgery. I sat on the couch in a sling for endless hours bored to death...I will never forget how seeing that splash page for the first time really helped me out. Once again...monsters to the rescue.

1) I've been in the Guinness Book of World Records.
2) I do not eat meat, and am a pretty big fan of animal rights & rescue.
3) Which brings me to #3, I have a cheese addiciton to aged cheddar. Anything 7+ years. I hear a block of 40 year aged was just found in my state. I will find it, even if it's older than I am. I may be a vegetarian, but I am still from Wisconsin. I can't help it. (I don't love WI.)
4) I have three dogs and a cat. Beulah, Boris, Tiny Elvis & 'Scilla. (The cat is Boris.)
5) I think chicken soup smell like body odor and I sometimes confuse the smell of coffee with poop. My sense of smell may be a bit askew.
6) I LOVE a good sense of humor, but I love a better sense of proper spelling, puncuation and grammar. The lazy age of internet & text has loosened me up a little though.
7) I have a lot of tattoos and freckles & red hair.
8) I graduated with a major in Communication (PR/Ad emphasis), Art minor.
9) My favorite movies are Tank Girl, Shaun of the Dead, the Amateurs, Frankenstein/Bride of, and I know there's a 5th, but can't remember.
10) I have a bad memory. ;)

Thanks Flower...ah your neighbor is full of bologna. They never get near my garbage or anything, usually I just throw some fruit, vegetables and bread out back and they're fine. The old man across the way puts out a bunch of veggies and this one rabbit knows just where to go and sits right at his sliding door and eats. I can't seem to attract him like he does...not only that, when he brings the food outside he whistles for the rabbit and I swear in about 30 seconds he makes an appearance--I gotta get a pic of him he is a BIG boy!

That's the cheap-crap coffee. Since I switched from Maxwell House to Gevalia Traditional Roast, even my mother, who doesn't like coffee, likes the smell of it while it's brewing. My dad would be appalled, though. There was no better coffee than Maxwell House, as far as he was concerned. None, I tells ya!

Of course, the most expensive coffee in the world, kopi luwak, literally is poop! Coffee cherries are eaten by the Asian Palm Civet, and the seeds (beans) inside pass through the animals' digestive tracts. The beans are then picked out of the droppings, washed, and dried. It's said this process produces the smoothest, least bitter coffee known to man. And, I firmly believe, it provides unceasing laughter for the Asian Palm Civets. "Hey, Artie, you know what those hairless apes do with our poop? You ain't gonna believe this, even after I tell ya!"

It's important to get the right amount of coffee to water when brewing it. I used to really love Kona coffee and never understood all the fuss over Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee ... I'm fine with Maxwell house and it's at good price point too.

Another thing ... I don't understand why people 'need' to get drunk to enjoy sports, music or anything else.

California, the place that invented race riots (Watts), Crips, Bloods, Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Granted, California also gave the world Ed "Big Daddy" Roth and the Doors, but what good has come out of the place since 1968?

Hep, those are some pretty funny generalities.

California did not invent race riots--it merely had big ones.  There were plenty of prior race riots, including two in your neck of the woods.  The Anti-Greek riots (1918) and The Christie Pitts riot (1933) were in Toronto.  Then there were the anti Asian riots in Vancouver (1907)  But, that's BC for you . . . ;D

Gangs?  The Italian gangs are still pretty influential in Toronto, aren't they?  And I know there are Canadian Crips and Bloods in Toronto.
Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt? Well that's bad enough.  But Ontario exported  Jim Carrey,  Corey Haim, and Howie Mandell.  I was goung to mention Shatner--but he was from Montreal, and that's a whole other problem! ;D

Most of what you mentioned as good and bad in California were basically products of Los Angeles. And that is just one small part of California.  Kind of like judging all of Canada after getting mugged on Younge Street. ::)
I lived in California for three years.  I'd Never move back. However, there are plenty of very nice places to visit, especially in the Northern half of the state.

Just don't get me started on Wisconsin!!

No, California didn't invent the concept of race riots. California just staged a really good one to show the rest of the world how these things should be done. All the previous ones were candy ass by California standards. California in essence perfected the concept.

When I think of Wisconsin I think of hundreds of lakes with monstrous man-eating pike, beachside summer resorts, blizzards, numerous small dairies with home milk delivery, really good cheddar cheese, Schlitz, Blatz, Miller High Life and Old Milwaukee beer, the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad and the Wisconsin Central Railroad, manufacturing industries and badgers. Nothing hippy dippy about any of those things.

Okay, Ol' Wisco isn't SO bad...but seriously, it's too cold for me. It's in the 60's this week and I've been in like 2-3 shirts, two usually sweaters, and sometimes a scarf. I'm ALWAYS cold. I don't even shake hands with strangers anymore because you can only hear the word "corpse" so many times before you just start smiling and waving instead. It's mortifying.

Wisconsin cold? Don't be silly. Try Frobisher Bay. Complaining about cold in the lower 49 States is beyond wimpy.

If and when I ever retire (and I may never), I'm going to move north so that I can sneer at the sissies who seek warmer climes. Toronto isn't nearly cold enough for a tom as rugged as me.

No need to flame California.  I don't regret leaving California for North Carolina, but there are still things I love about the place.  I also wouldn't move back, but I wouldn't mind visting every couple of years.

Hmmmmm. Alright then. Let me start a list of what I like about California:

1. Jack in the Box Restaurants

2. Fat Burger Restaurants

3. Oakland Raiders

4. Oakland Athletics

5. San Francisco Giants

6. Southern Pacific Railroad

7. Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway

Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, Pete Millar, the Doors, Big Brother & the Holding Company, surfing, Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello and beach movies, but like I say all these things were  in the distant past.

Any other suggestions?

I have no love or hate for California .. perhaps it's a necessary evil.

Love Cobb salads ... Hate trendy California cuisine where you get a pretty plate with almost nothing to eat.

Another thing about me is that I don't believe in blackmail and hate liars.

I am not curious (or jealous) regarding other people and rarely ask remotely personal questions and don't share personal details of my life .. this has prompted people to create fanastys about me ... SIGH .. I just happen to lack the 'curious gene' and it bewilders some people that I never ask questions about the location of cottages or other details of someone else's life.

I don't gossip and will walk away from people who start shoveling bull about others.

I"m also careful about getting or sending viruses and will automatically delete emails from people that I don't know.

1. I've been playing electric guitar for over 30 yrs.
2. I gigged in bars in a rockin' blues band for 2 yrs.' VERY FUN but all we earned was free beer.
3. Then I had a very peaceful band breakup: all of us guys found a girlfriend & got married.
4. I'm obsessed with costumes, Halloween, horror, making Batman appearances and costume events. Thus, I have a scary number of costumes, which are upgraded & keep changing.
5. LOVE riding motorcyles, but quit after 2 very close calls yrs ago. 'Excited my wife does not care if I buy another one and get back into riding. 'VERY impressed with the Honda CBR 600 and other bikes.
6. hooked on convertible sports cars for life and wish I discovered them many moons ago.
7. I work very hard and play very hard.
8. enjoy gardening & maintaining it.
9. LOVE California living.
10. My wife wants me to try stand up comedy, because I have dozens of different voices and accents, and I can play some intense rockin' blues in between jokes. I'd probably do it with an ice cold six pack of beer. 'Drinkin' on the job, baby!  8)

I agree about your garden. It's a lot of fun to watch 'em thrive. I selected the easiest things to grow that grow very large, yellow sweet brooms, purple and light red bougainvillea, white star jasmine, ivy, honeysuckle, etc.

Yes, peaceful band breakups are quite rare. It helped to have awesome girlfriends and we were a bit tired of Tues and Thurs night rehearsals year-round.

Thought I'd add a second "Ten Things" since I posted the first time 2 and a half years ago.

1.  I once owned 3 dogs at the same time.  Two full-blooded rottweilers (male & female) & a
     male mixed rottie.

2.  The next dog I owned (and still do) is a YORKIE!!

3.  I once drank 33 draft beers in one sitting, except for getting up to pee twice (and yes, in
     the bathroom!).

4.  When I gave my wife (then, girlfriend) a ring, the local jeweler assured me it was something
called a pre-engagement or promise ring because I didn't know if I wanted to
commit at that time.  My girlfriend (now, wife) said gleefully, "Yay!  We're engaged!"  When I
tried to explain to her it wasn't an actual engagement ring, she assured me that it WAS!
We were married a year later... and I had a "talk" with the jewelers (two brothers
I actually knew from the gym I went to - they owned the shop), but everything turned out fine!

5.  I accidently DRANK my wife's contact lenses on our honeymoon.

6.  I was anemic, underweight, sickly & frail from kindergarten till halfway through the 4th grade.

7.  I dated a roller derby chick for awhile.  I also dated a girl wrestler named ""Two-Ton Tessie"
She didn't weigh two tons, though.  More like 260 or 280.  Later, she had gotten down to
     165.

8.  I wear a 10 a half shoe on my left foot - and a 12 wide on my right.

9.  An alligator tried to come through some boardwalk planks (in The Everglades) to eat me.
     He didn't, though.

10. My 3rd grade teacher, in her very first year of teaching, was also my next door neighbor.
She and her husband would come over, play cards and drink beer with my Mom & Dad
on some weekends.  I held that over her head.

Okay, so I lied...sue me!
1. I once helped shoot a four-minute animated film in 72-hours, straight through.
2. I was denied permission to make an animated student film based on "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd," the opening number of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" (which was cut from the Tim Burton film adaptation) in a letter from Stephen Sondheim himself.
3. I wrote a scathing review of "Carrie: The Musical" that was published in "Castle Rock: The Official Stephen King Newsletter."
4. The interview I conducted with the entire season ten cast of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" wasn't published until after the series had already been cancelled by the Sci-Fi Channel.
5. My hometown, Newark, New Jersey, was recently voted the rudest city in the world!
6. I have never played a computer game on any of the computers I've ever owned.
7. I played Teddy Brewster in my high school's production of "Arsenic & Old Lace," and made up the actor playing Jonathan Brewster to look like Bela Lugosi, because his nose was too big to be credible as Boris Karloff.
8. My favorite colors are black and silver. My high school's colors are blue and gold. Inexplicably, my class' yearbook cover was printed in black & silver instead of blue & gold.
9. I once played Santa Claus for my college's day care center, and not one kid tried to pull my beard.
10. I once submitted a bunch of cartoons to "Screw" magazine back in the '80s, and they were rejected for being "too filthy even for us!"

More stuff .. forgive if I'm repeating myself.

I'm neither a gossip or a busybody.

I don't ask people lots of questions or personal questions .. if someone wants to tell me something, it's one thing but I don't ask questions of others. I especially don't ask questions if I have no interest on a subject or topic.  I am NOT curious about the lives of others.

I'm allergic to smoke or all kinds and it gets worse with age.

I have a love/hate relationship with rain .. I love the mood it creates, the good it does for the plants, grass, llowers .. etc .. Hate that it inhibits my plans.

I wish that Danial Silva would write at least two Gabriel Allon books a year.

I wish that Mother Nature was kinder to my garden.

I want to have the room to grow melons of all kinds.

I will attempt to grow radishes and raspberries in the Spring.

I like to support the neighborhood kids .. buy their raffle tickets and try to see them play sports when possible.

My animals are very well trained and obedient most of the time.

I don't like to be around drunks.

I hate it when someone destroys the property of others (no matter how small) or when people piss in the street or gardens (of others, I don't care what someone does on their own property).

I have zero tolerance of people who steal or take advantage of others.

I'm not a morning person but other than that, I'm usually in a good mood.  ;)

1.  I am a military brat. I have been around the world by the age of 14.

2.  I was born with asthma

3.  I had cancer and beat it due to early detection when I was 34.

4.  This coming April I will have been married 39 years.

5.  I have a fear of snakes because when I was 5 years old in Texas, my friend and I went to his house to get a game. When we were in his room he noticed a lump in his bed. He thought his sister left a doll in his bed so he pulled back the covers quickly and instead of a doll, there was a water moccasin. We got out of there quick!  Apparently what had happened was the trap came off the base sewer lines and the snake got in there and came up through the toilet and into the bed. To this day, even though I have a septic tank, I still look when I sit.

6.  2 months before my 50th birthday in 2007 on Fathers Day I had a heart attack and was dead for 3 minutes. They got me back but they say there was no reason I should be here and all the charts showed I didn't make it.  I was 100% blocked in the main artery and not many come back from that.

7.  I have  been a cable tv technician for 38 years. I have done just about everything including being a supervisor, rewiring towers, building new plant on roads. My job kept changing because the company were always getting sold. When I first came to Maine there was no cable so I got into it on the ground floor when they first came into the state. Even though I am 61 I still climb poles and work outside. Too stubborn to stop.

8. One time I fell 22' from a telephone pole and missed a railroad spike by inches. I cracked my spleen and the hood of my stomach and had internal bleeding and almost died but got lucky and pulled through.

9.  I have a son who had our grandaughter who is 7 months and my daughter had our grandson who is 15 months.  Both a joy. Life is good.

10.  I started my Universal Monster obsession in the first grade. It all started with on of my friends giving me a Aurora Mummy model. I loved it (my parents did not) From there I discovered the Aurora monster models and Famous Monsters Magazine and have been a hopeless collector ever since. I managed to hold onto my original monster models event thought they traveled around the world with me.  I think I am hung up on the monsters because moving every 3 years is rough and you couldn't hold onto friends. The monsters were the only familiar thing I could relate to wherever we went.  I started my website in 1999 and because of it I have a large collection in my Universal Room which has over 2000 items. Also because of the site, I became a published author. I helped an author who contacted me for some Wolfman pictures. I sent them to him and I added notes about the makeup and he liked it. He had me write 4 paragraphs and they published 2 paragraphs plus he named my site as a reference. I am trying to find time to finish repairing the site because of my webhosts new software, I had to change a lot of formats. It is 3/4 done but I have trouble finding time but I will get it.

BONUS #11  Sorry, I am long winded

Universal Steve, I can surely relate.  I too had a "fatal" heart attack at age 55, widow-maker with 100% blockage, they "worked" on me for 20 minutes, on the third try with the defibulator, I took a breath on my own, otherwise they were ready to give up. I was a "lean-buff" 55 year old with an 8 pack, ate the healthiest of foods, exercised like there was no tomorrow, so-called "picture of health", and low-low cholesterol and triglycerides to boot!  Recently have been reading about lipoprotein(a), doctors usually don't test for it (but, they should), one of the emerging factors as to why people with normal to low cholesterol levels have heart attacks.

Hep, yes, it is.  The lipoprotein(a) that I referred to is something that is normally not checked too well with typical cholesterol blood tests, it seems to be a particularly "sticky" type of hdl, which is supposed to be the "good" cholesterol, but not this particular part of it.  As of yet, it is very hard to lower, you might be able to do a search on it, more research is truly needed for this, doctors only seem to focus on "average" risk factors associated with heart attacks which are total cholesterol and just your hdl and ldl levels along with triglicerides.  I belong to Life Extension in Florida, and have been studying nutrition for many years, long before I had my heart attack.  I was actually a "health nut" while I was still in high school, and that was a long time ago!!  They called me the "Jack Lalane" of Arrow  (where I was employed), the heart attack happened there, at the start of my shift.  The person that saved me wasn't supposed to be at work on that day, or that shift, but by a miracle he was there. I was on the front page of the newspaper here, along with being on channel 6 Action news in Philadelphia, and on channel 69 news here in the Reading-Allentown area.  A very humbling experience. I continue with body-building exercises and nutrition, I'll probably never stop. Believe me, I scared the "crap" out of everyone at work that day November 9th., 2009 when I fell over dead, they just couldn't comprehend it. As of today, I still train very hard, but my joints are starting to show some "wear and tear" with age, and sometimes I have to reduce the weight, and go for more reps with a slightly lower weight load.

Skully, Glad to her you made it but as you know it is a scary ride. I unfortunately am not the picture of health. Luckily, I do not smoke and after the heart attack I lost 86 pounds but stupidly put back on 70 of it.  I am  working on losing it again.  You take care of yourself and pace your workout.  I don't hurry around as much as I used to. I guess the old saying "Slow and Steady wins the race" will apply.

Universal Steve, Thanks so much for your reply.  Please, Steve, take care of yourself too, nothing is impossible and everything is possible.  I admit, it is scary sometimes, but I just "ride that wave" as high as I possibly can, and let the rest to chance.  No one ever said that life was fair, bad things can surely happen to good people, but it is only your own perception as to what is bad or good, I've always said, fight like there's no tomorrow, because, you just never know.  I feel you are one of the "good" guys, never say never, and fight the good fight, no matter what. Steve, send me an e-mail anytime.
