Title: The Weird World of Dr. Madd
Post by: Dr. Madd on December 19, 2010, 02:52:05 AM
Some pics of myself and some of my weapon collection.

two twelve inch Predator blowguns.. The Pistol grips are custom-added after market.

I use them in war games as a pair for a quick midrange one/two punch. The model designs are Guppy and Pirahna.

My 18 inch and 4 foot blowgun. Both, like two little guys are .40 caliber.

My newest Blowgun.. Custom made- for easy concealment. I named it the Candiru after the little fish in South American rivers.

A friend of mine told me a while back, given  my propensity for tropical wear, khakis, pith helmets, etc If I was a mad scientist, I'd be professor challenger or Dr. Moreau. I'll have more pics soon.. Including a new sculpt I'm doing.

my brother, the witch doctor (Yes, that's his actual nickname and persona). LOL.  actually has a shrunken head, made by headhunters, on the rearview mirror of his truck. He named it Ernie.

We come from  a macabre bloodline that includes Richard the Third  and an axe murderer. Ah, family pride!

More pics..

My large crossbow.. 150 pounds pull. Can drop a deer if I ever had time to go hunting.

This is my war hammer. Designed after similar weapons used in 14th century Italy, it is a triple threat: The handle has a short spike on it. There is a nasty crowbill on the back and the hammer side is designed to wreck plate armor. You cannot hammer out those corners once struck by this instrument.

My steel viking helmet.. Very heavy. My flanged battle mace- it stays by my bed at night- and my twenty pound scottish-styled shield. The flanged battle mace was a skull-crusher. No matter how it landed, all the force of impact was on one of those points.. It could smash through helmets.

My personal favorite.. The mace and chain. That ball is covered in spikes, weighs about 3 pounds and can strike a target at 60 miles an hour.

I learned a new skill: I can carve tikis out of air-dry clay. No molding, no modeling. All carving. I am amazed that this is so relaxing. And the clay will tell you what the faces will look like Will post pics.

Where in the world do you keep all this stuff, Dr. Madd?? I don't even have enough space in my house to store coats   :)  Your collection looks heavy and expensive, so I imagine you have some strong shelves! We were so hard up for storage around here, we started keeping big packages of paper towels in our car trunk. We have 4 bedrooms (one is an office) and we don't know why 2 people can fill them up so fast! I blame my kids for leaving so much stuff here. I have to balme someone! But you really do have some cool stuff, are they family heirlooms?

The armory is, I fear somewhat cluttered. Especially since we had to merge it with the house library, but soon, I shall have it all organized.

That they are. We had such a blast. I bought some new bracers, a replacement wedding ring (Lost mine last winter when my finger shrank in the snow) , and a catapult that flings marshmallows.

That looks like a good time! We've been to the one in Atlanta, but I've found that people don't really participate at much as the Faire my Dad goes to in Fla.  I didn't know what to expect when we went, but it was mostly animal shows, jousting and arts and crafts with a parade a couple times a day. None of the general public was dressed up in period clothing and it was more of a" walk around and then leave" kind of crowd when we went. While I do not own Rennaisance clothing, I still went along with everything and had a good time! Mmmmmm ginger beer.....
Your pictures look like your festival was in a beautiful setting- all those trees and grass take you away from 2011! Where is it held at?  The one my dad goes to is somewhere near Gainesville Fla. and he and his wife go in costume like you guys do   :)   I really need to get out more- and more importantly- go back in time!!
I need to get me some Faire garb- but NOT a 20 lb. sheild!!!  Your arms had to be exhausted from that beast!

I'm still sore from it.. And can't wait till next year to do it all again.

This one is held in Franklin Tennessee. Those of you who listen to Taylor Swift will recognize the Castle from her Love Story video as Gwynne castle, home of the people who set up the faire.

What is that shield made of--lead?

The one I have used for years is 28" with an iron rim and steel boss. And it weighs maybe 8 lbs max.

I am sore, sweaty, reeking of cosmoline and gun oil, the smell of gunpowder in my nostrils, and an empty mosin Nagant in my hands..Life is good. I LOVE this rifle. I was just sighting it in, getting a feel for the kick, and an idea of the sights, and at 40 feet, put three rounds about a millimetre apart in the center of the target. First time I've ever picked it up. I've fired four guns today. The Casull 454, (Which I not only put a bullet square through my target, a small tree at 30 feet, but into the tree behind it, the Charter arms, Lavender lady snubnose .38 revolver, the Mosin Nagant (Which is Now my go-to firearm), And my brother's KAR 98.

Re: Sombrero and Broom..

Dr Madd, you are truely the arsenal of democracy for the monster kid set! Your collection is awesome!

If you don't mind my asking, are you of Icelandic or nordic descent? You seem very comfortable in the viking helmet!! If so, are there Icelandic/ nordic sultural festivals in your area that you attend? You would fit in well with our viking reinactors we have at a festival called Islendingadagurinn!

Yes, and no. Nordic in that my ancestors were Normans, the Norsemen who settled Normandy, and the Saxons of Old England, and also the Alsatians. I would love to attend Islendingadagurinn, if ever I have money to spare.

Note the trifoil configuration. It gives the whole unit stability.

A side view of the fletchings.

The clear section is made from an eversharp pencil. It lends weight and sturdiness to the design.

The cap that holds the point, made from a bamboo skewer, is made from the cover for a ballpoint pen. The hook section from the pocket clip will later be used in conjunction with a Pana Slingshot.

The tip made from bamboo skewer, and taped into place. I don't know what the price of a dart is, but this one was made mostly from discarded items. . All I personally need is an office supply place or a department store and I can make stuff.

My apologies for the lack of focus.

aka- The Mad Dog

You will need

1 wooden sign post- one inch wide , lengths vary- found in any walmart DIY dept.
1 popsicle stick
1 one inch craft button- get one with a recessed edge on the face. This will be your bucket
between 10 and 15 office-supply rubber bands, the small, colorful ones work better.
1 quarter inch dowel rod

hot glue gun
drill
hammer- maybe necessary.
exacto knife
marker

step one

cut two three inch sections off the yard sale sign post. Save the rest for other projects
Plug in your hot glue gun.- give it time to warm up.

Measure off two sets of holes half inch on either side of the sign post sections. That would be half an inch in, half an inch up. Mark those. Drill them out.
Cut two three inch sections of the dowel, and using the knife, bevel the edges about an inch on each side. Don't over trim, but don't leave them too thick or it will crack the wood.
Using the glue gun and securely glue the button to one end of the popsicle stick.

Push the two dowels into the holes of one side of the signpost section, and do the same on the other side. Your pieces by now should resemble a square.
fit your rubber bands around one end, close to the dowel rods. Using your fingers, or a pencil, give the bands a twist by placing the object in the hollow between the edge of the bands- Note: I'm not good at describing this, if you can- I think you know what I'm doing. Fit the end of the popsicle stick into the bands once they are twisted to suit you, but leave the tail of the stick out to strike against the end dowel rod. It will be laying forward, but its designed like that.

The firing mechanism. Hold the cannon steady, load it, allow the round to fall into the balloon, pull that ballloon way back out the barrel and release. Like a real cannon, it does misfire every now and then, but it fires most of the time. Whatya expect out of a cannon made of recycled materials?

Yes, I have. I actually sell my own version of one, essentially the same device, except I use woodstain to make them pretty, and I upholster the inside of an Altoids tin with a spacer and sell them with two pistols as small dueling sets.

Soon, I'll have some pics of my newest invention, the slingapult.

This is the next generation of Madd Catapult construction- the Double A-frame catapult- for its size the most powerful Catapult I have ever seen. This beast, while small enough for your office desk is not recommended for office warfare or hyjinx. It can lob an altoid -sized projectile made of air-dry clay and tied on a string as a sacrificial sling in excess of 60 feet and can dent soft materials like styrofoam like close range. The pull on the swing arm feels as strong as that of a thirty eight revolver

And this is the final incarnation. Four pegs- these a-frame catapult frames are held together only by wooden pegs. The three pegs, one of which serves a dual purpose as a tension pulley and a stop bar, makes this sacrificial sling hurler the most powerful launcher I've ever made.

Not a sling-style cat, but like the slinger, one of the next generation of Madd arms siege machinery. This one hurls altoids and small stones great distances and with terrific speed and power.

My new toy I made for my daughter. looks like a pink castle, right?

The Castle is a wooden box. The Towers hold up the lid when you open it.

When you open it, you slide the spoon behind a dowel rod and it makes a tension catapult to throw marshmallows and stuff. Note the elephant crest on the coat of arms.

And if I sold these, each castle would have a knight in it. My daughter wanted me to paint the knight in her castle pink. So with no further adieu, the Pink Knight.
