Title: How are you celebrating Halloween?
Post by: BaronLatos35 on October 28, 2010, 09:55:15 AM
I love hearing about other member's Halloween celebrations/traditions. So for the third year...How are you celebrating Halloween?

There will be no parties for us this year, but we will be in costumes, handing out candy to the TOTers,  a monster movie marathon, wine, food and my wife's homemade pumpkin pie.

I will take pics of my daughter's first Halloween costume: The Princess Ananka, Egyptian Mummy...

Movie wise we are starting off with:
-Dracula (1931),
-Trick R Treat (2008)
-Haxan: Witchcraft through the Ages (1922). If I can, I'll squeeze in The Haunting (1963).

But reality is, I may be walking my princess around the house, hoping she goes to sleep!

Happy Halloween!

Big Halloween party at work( I provided the Lifesize Monsters and decorations).
Then tear it down to set up for the Trick or Treaters at home.
Hopefully some time to watch a few Universal classic 's plus my two favorite halloween shows
The Great Pumpkin and Disney's Sleepy Hollow.
Love the Halloween season.

I will probably end up looking like my userpic again this year and handing out, with my wife, candy to the trick-or-treaters.

My boys are old enough now that they will go out on their own, with friends, and return later to help hand out candy and scare small children.  ;)

After about 9 o'clock I may project (digitally) House on Haunted Hill in the driveway.  Since we have work the next morning I won't be staying up too late.

Well, my wife just informed me that on Friday, she's making the 4 hour round trip to pick up our 7 & 3/4 year old granddaughter, and bring her back here to celebrate with us!  Yay!!  That means extra candy for me - that's my job!  Autumn likes little girl stuff more than monsters (is she really related to me?) but after she sacks out, it's a monster marathon!  Saturday, we're taking her to some "safe" Halloween events scattered around town and then on Sunday, the wife is taking her trick or treating.  There are no set hours here in Lafayette & West Lafayette, which is awesome!  I'll be handing out treats to all those who dare knock on our door.  My Mom, who turned 81 on Oct. 28th and my sister MIGHT come & visit on Saturday also.  My sister, Debbie, is 4 years older than me and we are really close.  She and my oldest sister, Anna, use to scare the crap outta me when I was a wee lad.  I eventually got them back, though, he-he-he!

I can't wait!  Grandkid, Monsters, Mom & Sister, Wife & Dog (our dog's a girl, too) and a candy eatin', rum drinkiin', movie watchin', HAUNTED HALLOWEEN!

We're keeping it low key because we just haven't had time to prepare. Dressing up the boys and taking them out TOTing. Then home to hand out candy and watch some Bride Of Frankenstein, Charlie Brown, and off to bed.

We will be on Trick or treat duty both days because I keep hearing that they'll be out there on Sat & Sun.  We have to drag out all the fragile props, set up the electric chair (some people take their kids pics in it) and when it gets dark enough we are also going to project NMBC on the big window out front. On Sat. afternoon I'm going with my grandson and daughter in law to TOT in the downtown merchant area ( my grandson has planned his weekend like a military invasion) and then go back home while the nutty grandson goes to his other grandma's house to TOT in her town square. Then on Sunday, my grandson will be back at my house TOTing in my neighborhood. And in between TOTers  I'm hoping my husband and I will be watching some Simpson's Treehouse of Horror episodes and the dvr-ed  "The Walking Dead". I'm so excited about that new mini series!!!  And last but not least, we will probably eat some hot dogs ( we only get them a couple times per year ) and other forbidden food!  Like candy and pop!

Well, Charlotte, let's put it this way - I've been eating very healthy the past few days, gearing up for a Sasquatch-like attack on all sorts of confectionary goodness!  Plus, I really just dig the whole Celtic Halloween spirit(s) in the damp night air!  It's also a good night for smoking my annual Swisher Sweet outside - oh yeah, we might flame up our firepit, too!

Baron Latos, this is an awesome thread idea!

Hey, I'm a Swisher Sweet man myself. I can't shoot pool properly unless the smoke from a SS is stinging my eyes and perfecting my focus.

We host a Halloween Party every year.

You gotta come as someone from a movie----anyone.  Then you gotta bring a DVD and know where your character's scene is.  We play the movie clips and folks eat and drink and the kids play...

Some people like to come as iconic characters... some come as obscure characters you never even noticed.

My cousin likes to come as naked as he can.  One year he was Kevin Bacon from Animal House-----he drove up from Bordentown in his tightie-whities with his family in tow. :o

I will be Mr. Larson from Happy Gilmore (Richard Keil's character) this year.  My sister is going to be Mrs. Brody from JAWS.  My wife is going to be Renee Zellwegger from some chic flic where she's wearing red pajamas with penguins on them...

My buddy came as Cousin Eddie from Vegas Vacation one year and he was in boy shorts and a red mesh tank top.  I'm hoping I don't have to see that again. ::)

Our Halloween party is Saturday.... for Halloween on Sunday, there will be Trick Or Treating and then I will be handing out candy dressed as a 6'9" Frankenstein... I think I'll be on the porch covered on a chair... my 2 year old still hasn't warmed up to the mask. ;D

Hawk and I will be at the Norfolk Animal Care Center's Halloween celebration with special guest, horror host Dr. Madblood, on October 30.  That evening is the airing of his 35th anniversary Halloween special on WHRO TV, Virginia Public Television:

Saturday, October 30 at 10:00 p.m.
AND
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 31 at 10:30 p.m.

WHRO-TV 15 and WHRO HD 15-1

Hawk and I are in the show; he is the Frankenstein monster and I am a character from Dia de los Muertos.   I may also be in footage of a Dogs Gone Swimming event where Madblood was the costume contest judge. (Dog costumes, naturally).

Halloween itself will be the trick or treat night; a friend will help us hand out candy from our house o'horrors (a little toned down this year because my dog has been ill and I have been focusing more on her; thanks to Hawk, the yard is decorated).    We will also try to show our friend The Changeling, a really good ghost movie starring George C. Scott.

Baron- The Walking Dead series premieres on AMC on Halloween night!  It sounds pretty good plus it was filmed in Atlanta near where I live   :)   I would normally be waiting for Trick or Treaters and handing out candy like you are planning, but I've been blessed with a 5 year old grandson- so I'm sure I'll be running around with him!  That's why I'll be recording all the Halloween shows and watching them on Nov. 1st    Happy Halloween BaronNightshade!

You are such a lucky Grandma!  I hope you have fun taking your little grandson out trick or treating! You are a lucky girl!

The past 4 Halloweens we've had our niece's over for T or T.  Those were a blast!  Ours will be quiet this year.  Passing out candy and watching scary movies.  I've got Psycho ready to pop into the DVD player.

I hope everybody's Halloween is the scariest ever!

This is the first year in 10 or 12 that I'm not doing a party (this has been a "lost year" for me in several ways, so hopefully back on track next year).

When I get home today, I'll probabaly turn on TCM and leave it going through Monday morning--hoping to spend whatever free time I have drawing.

Sunday, my son and i are going to a "brunch-o-ween" that a friend is throwing, then to Eastman House for a 2:30 show of CFTBL. After that, home for pizza before my son and a couple friends go out. I'll either monitor them or stay home on door duty.

We were in a haunted house last night. I was the Mad Scientist/tour guide, and my wife was an invisible woman. The Hat trick worked well, but one kid saw how it was done. I'm working on fixing that one. also, Some of the other gags worked well, however. And I've got prototypes in my project book for next year:

A teapot that can be poured remotely as if by an invisible hand.
An improved floating hat.

A costume with no head.

I didn't decorate as much as I usually do this year....I moved from town, and live out on Lake Ontario - unlikely I'll see any kids....tonight am bound for Liverpool NY (I have a friend who puts on one HELL of a haunted house this time of year).

Tomorrow will take the grandson out door to door (in Watertown), and will come home in time for "The Walking Dead" on AMC.  Its also my 31st wedding anniversary-----

Also will be looking for movies or documentaries to watch....the History channel has a show on Halloween at 10 (Eastern)....

Time to start planning for next year.....and I still have to get my fogger out of mothballs and power that sucker UP....

Well, my granddaughter arrived last night and couldn't wait to show me her "witch" costume - a good witch, she stressed!  She & Grandma Lizzie went to Borders Books for a kids party this morning, while I stayed home & watched THE BOWERY BOYS MEET THE MONSTERS.  They returned about 1 pm to pick me up.  We went to the El Rodeo restaurant & then off to Walgreen's to pick up some candy & Swisher Sweets for the Halloween Smoke-Off Celebratiion tomorrow night.  I'm back home while Grannie & Autumn go trick or treating at the Tippecanoe Mall, then trick or treating in neighborhoods!  Lafayette & W. Lafayette's TOT schedule is Friday, Saturday & Sunday with NO set hours!!!  If we're not too tired, we might go to the Howl-A-Thon later this evening to hear the wolves howl & enjoy their goodie-filled pumpkins.  It takes place at the Wolf Park in Battle Ground.  We're very lucky to have this place so close to us.  It's only about 15-20 minutes away.  If you like wolves, check this out:  http://www.wolfpark.org/ (http://www.wolfpark.org/)

I was in a haunted house show tonight. While playing, I came up with the idea of guzzling mountain dew from a plastic beaker, then begin choking and snarling and effect a Hyde transformation. My first time, I went totally bezerk and slammed a table, destroying my beaker. But I sent the crowd scattering LOL! My wife and I worked out a battle of sorts between the Invisible woman and Mr. Hyde.  Very effective, especially since I was the guide up to then

Last night was cool, me and my guitarist/friend went up to my old bass player's house who we're still close with for a party.

He lives in the middle of the woods waaaaay out in the sticks. It's where used to practice when we 1st got started.

Theres a broken down old shack that has a tree fallen through it on his property....he ran an extension cord and threw orange and black lights all over the outside of it. Had a few kegs and a DJ set up in his living room.

A nice party with alot of guys and girls I havent seen in awhile...I didn't go crazy with a costume, I left from band practice so my old leather jacket that still has spiked lapels and Misfits patches on it...my skeleton gloves, and I threw on my very old Collegeville Phantom Of The Opera mask and proceeded to drink way too much.

Fun stuff.

My sister-in-law and her hubbie came ot my party as the 2 protagonists in BLACULA to my party last night.  They may have been the unofficial winners of the best costume title.  You gotta come as characters in a movie and nobody seays who they are until they put their movie in and then we all see the scene with the characters in duplicated outfits.

Just past 8:00, and almost out of treats--went through 50 treat bags that we made up, and another 50 or so "backup" treats. Full dark now, 35 degrees, and a mix of rain and snow coming down, so not expecting many more kids.

Halloween here was actually last night. All the locals around just decided it was more conveinient to do everything saturday night.

We had out Ghostbuster ectomobile parked along the street downtown, with us both in out ghostbuster gear, where they were doing a safe trick r treat event, and were seriously overwhelmed!

Within 45 mnutes, we were out of candy, so we started giving the kids our ghostbuster business cards, which they seemed to covet even more that candy. We both had been kneeling down for little kids, but after a while we could hardly get up any longer. I'd say we easily saw 1000 people, and probably about 400 kids! I couldn't even tell you how many pics we posed for, but at one point, it was about 1 a minute, because we had a huge line of people waiting.

After that, we capped the evening with a club hallweenb contest (which we didn't even place in), but the music was 80's and the band was great, and even better, we managed to keep a booth the whole time, so we didn't have to wear our gear the entire night.

We exhausted ourselves so much, we were wiped out today. We slept till noon, at dusk cruised around the trick r treating neighborhoods with our "Ecto" playing ghostbuster music and the siren, and then finally settled down to a relaxing evening at home watching supernatural, Halloween H20, and Shaun of the Dead.

It was VERY odd not to actually be doing halloween things the night of, but we had plenty of fun this season already, and we both really needed the relaxation.

Looks like you guys had a blast!  We gave out candy to 45 trick or treaters.  The kids were all total strangers... I think most of them were driven in from other neighborhoods.    We had a few more kids than we did last year.  'Jason" , Ninjas and Star Wars characters were the big thing in costumes from this representative sample population.

General, that looks like a small class! I know they were running you ragged. Way to soldier up and guide them.

We started off with TCM on during the day, while I cooked the baked ziti and took pics of my daughter's first Halloween costume.

Then we put on Nightmare Before Christmas (my wife's favorite) and watched as a family. You should have seen my daughter's eyes, fixated on all the bright colors, weird angles and the songs...she would get fussy if I moved her out of sight. Daddy was proud.

Wine, dinner and monster movies getting ready for the TOTers. We had about 40-50 kids, an average turnout for us. It was great to see them in their costumes. Next year I'm taking my daughter...

At 9, joined the UMA for a toast and just enjoyed the Hallloween night. Back inside to watch Dracula and The Walking Dead...fell asleep with TCM on..

Now it's Dia de Muerte...lunch with my wife and visiting the cemetery for my grandparents.

fmofmpls- You would win a photo contest with that sweet picture!  They all look like they are ready for fun!  The third one from the left makes the same face my grandson ALWAYS does in pictures!  haha- How cool is it to share this holiday with the younger generation? I might not have any great adventures to tell my grandson or monumental accomplishments to go on and on about, but I can sure celebrate Halloween and share my love of Monsters with him.  And the window of opportunity seems so small that you can't wait around. I am so proud of his love of Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman, The Phantom, Creature, etc. But I'm shocked that he has decided that he really loves Zombies! He asked me last night to "please keep my Zombie the way he is, and don't take him apart". I'm trying to convince his Mom and Dad to take it home with them.   :)

I'm usually pumped about Halloween for days before. This year I just didn't really get into it until Sunday morning when I started putting my props out and masks in the window. Last year the hours were different and had a couple early birds before noon. Also only about 30 kids. This year the hours were 3-8pm. We ended up with 64 but only 2 scary costumes and too many tween girls who couldn't cared less about my displays. It was the 6 inch spiders in the bushes that got them. I scared a several kids including a few little ones unintentionally. Noticed several people taking pics of my stuff and one father thanked me for scaring the crap out of his kids.

'Tis the day after as I write this.

We carved pumpkins, lit them and placed them outside our door, displayed our vintage (1969 is vintage??) plastic mold pumpkins in the window and turned their lights on. Candy was poured into a bowl and we got a total of two, count 'em two,  kids trick-or-treating. -sigh- Our street is not well lit and it is the first year living on this street so I ain't saavy yet as to Halloween turn out. Now I am. One consolation...of the two who stopped by for candy, our neighbor's little boy dressed as the Mummy! Yay! I answered the door wearing my Frankenstein mask. It was fun.

After handing out the candy that took less than two minutes because both kids arrived together,  the rest of the evening was spent watching "The Horror of Party Beach". It was not quite as bad as I thought...entertaining, low budget, teens dancing on the beach, beach band...in Connecticut (not California!),etc. Fake looking creatures. Has anyone seen the movie?

Dialing in on the next day as well. Well, my overly-exhuberant Halloween Haunt occupied 95% of the day, and was not ready for ToTers until 630pm.

The wife usually makes a homemade sloppy joe, but that was sacrificed and pizza was had. We normally visit the local pumpkin patch the week before for Dad and Little man to get his pumkpin and carve on the day before, but this took place Halloween morning.

We took Mykhail ToTing on our street, all dressed in a Toy Story 2 theme. LM as Buzz Lightyear, his sister Jessica as Jessie, Christine was Bo-Peep, in a VS kinda way :) and I was Woody. I departed the group to transform into a Wolf Man ala 2010 style for the evenings Haunting at the House on Rodeffer Hill.

Afterwards, we went and visited a couple of other neighborhood haunts, which were pretty well done, and a house which throws a big party and does amazing decorating for the party. Will post pix on the House on Rodeffer thread.

Sounds like everyone had a wonderful Halloween. Sorry to have been absent from the boards, but had an impromptu out of office, then it became a mad dash to complete prep for yesterday

That Wolfman duo be UMA members Gina and Rick (aka the Wolfman).  Give them a hand for their great decorations and costumes; they deserve it!

'Tis wonderful, to behold, so many Lycanthropes, and, Hirsute Creatures, in our little band, o' Merrie Monsters!

My daughter has joined the Color Guard for her school's Marching Band and unfortunately they had a champioship competition in Hershey, PA which had us away for the day.  Our house was decorated (not as much as last year, but more than any other house in the neighborhood) and we put out a bucket of candy and hoped for the best while we were away.  I wore a Frankenstein mask at the show and wore my UMA shirt.

Williamstown came in 2nd in the Hershey championship (Tournament Of Bands)  and 1st the day before in Allentown, PA (USSBA)  (both were for Group 2 size).

Me at the show

Well, Halloween got ruined for me this year. Every day started going wrong, and at the last minute everything I planned on doing for the costume contest didn't work because I couldn't get the stuff I needed or could not get it in time. I ended up not even going to the show at the Portage for the costume contest because I was just too depressed and fatigued to even try. Halloween night itself was shot due to all sorts of things going wrong and having to call it an excessively early night due to an excessively early start Monday morning.

Ugh! We should have TWO Halloweens a year precisely because of stuff like this!

Sorry to hear that you had a not-so-good Halloween Barlow. It did seem a little weird this year with the confusion about the actual TOT day ( we had both days going full blast) and it seemed like Summer hung on a little longer than in past years. Of course tonight we have a freeze warning-bleh!  I understand about your costume issues. I ordered my grandson's costume fron Nickelodon shop on July 12th and it took 3 months to get it! I started sweating it around Oct 12th , even though he was cool about it and got a back-up costume from Walmart, and just when I thought it would never come in time- it showed up. I'm too old for this kind of stress!  haha  And by the way- we were wiped out on Monday morning and still haven't recovered!  Well we have plenty of time to start planning for NEXT year.....

Barlow - that sounds like my Halloween, last year!  April 30th is WALPURGIS NIGHT, which is supposed to be the "other" Halloween (although it hasn't caught on yet).  I celebrated it last year, short of displaying creepiness in my yard.   Monster Kids everywhere could really turn the heads of civilians, and probably irk most people, if we started celebrating April 30th like we do October 31st!  I plan to >:D.

Any chance to celebrate another Halloween!  I already recognize Walpurgisnacht every year, in honor of Count Waldemar Daninsky, and I've mentioned it many times in my (never to be published) fiction as a day when magickal boundaries are weakest.

Of course, to gain any popularity, we need to market it as May Day, with the parties all scheduled for May Day Eve.  Several cities have April Fool's Day celebrations / parades at the beginning of April, so if we make it appear to be linked to May, rather than April, it could catch on better.

Fortunately, no one knew you were naked because of your natural furriness. If anyone from PETA had seen you, they would have tossed paint on you for wearing mink.

Every year we go all out and decorate the outside of our house with all sorts of lights, a scarecrow, cornstalks, and all sorts of things that are motion activated. I then dress up in my Grim Reaper costume and jump out from behind the bushes and scare the daylights out of them. It's a yearly tradition and each year I keep a record of how many kids come. This year we were down a little from previous years, this year we got about 50 trick or treaters, down from last year where we had around 80.
It's a good time and everyone enjoys themselves.
