Title: Vacu-form or alternative process
Post by: Opera Ghost on September 17, 2010, 03:37:33 PM
There are some creature (not creech) busts that I'd like to use a source to create the Disney effect, of the moving sculpture busts (from the haunted mansion), and have no resources for vacu-forming a negative of each.

Any thoughts, recommendatons or suggestions how to achieve this to create the negative of these in plastic or something similar which can be illuminated from behind?

Thanks, OG

 Hey OG,

If you plan on having them illuminated from behind, then a thin vacuum form casts seems the most logical to me. You could use a molding latex to create the form. An if cast thin enough, light can be seen through it as well. But the problem would be making sure that the latex went on smooth and evenly. Vacuum form castings don't pick up the most detail but at least it comes out as one even layer that is smooth and even on the back.
Just my 2 cents. Good luck on the project!!!!!!!!!

Depending in your skill level, you can build a fairly decent vacuform setup just using household materials.

Check out YOUTUBE link here!

Vacuum Forming with your Kitchen Oven and Vacuum Cleaner (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGBRiYhxRTM#)

Go to www.vacuumformerplans.com (http://www.vacuumformerplans.com)

You'll also see MANY other videos listed on the right hand side.
It's actually quite simple and inexpensive.

You can also go to www.vacuumformerplans.com (http://www.vacuumformerplans.com)

(The Oven method is great, just be sure to get permission from your wife!)

Good luck with your project!

Jeff

It's starting to look like you'll be needing a hunchbacked assistant to pull a switch at some point!
