Anything to do with Saw. First one an ok shocker. The rest no point and total crap. Welll,2 was at least watchable. The rest crap shock $$ makers because the American audience has no imagination.

I agree with you there.  Also wasn't much of a fan of The Grudge.  I mean this ghost that is supposed to be scary and sounds like she is the belching champion of the world?  The story in my opinion wasn't that great either.

Ok, well that for one.

Next and this is gonna make me sound like some crotchety, old school a--hole, and I'm not..but I gotta say....90% of what makes it to the big screen and falls under the genre of "horror" is generally over hyped commercialized crap.

Grudge, Ring, every damn Exorcism movie since The Exorcist, Final Destination, Friday the 13th remake, RZ's Halloween 2...its just all boring to me.

Then you find a hidden treasure like Let The Right One In...or blow the dust off of Dark Night Of The Scarecrow--I would venture to say less that 1/2 of movie goers that consider themselves film buffs even know about these movies!

They end up knowing about them when it turnes into Let Me In....and by that point, they probably wont go back and check out the "real" movies that us hardcores are about......but I guess thats what makes a place like this and fans like us so special....we are not about..."the masses".

I think halloween is pretty overrated. I love the series to death. I still watch them to this day and treasure them. But the halloween movies are all people talk about when it comes to classics. Freddy, Jason, Micahel Myers etc. are all people talk about!!! They are all so Overrated!!! But don't get me wrong, i love every single character to death!!! They are important to horror's history!

I don't think that about Halloween.

I think the general public who doesnt care for these movies throw Micheal Myers in with the rest of the 80's slasher crew because of all the sequels and general size of the franchise now.

If someone said to me "Recomend 2 modern horror films to get me collecting" I would easily choose the original Halloween and Night Of The Living Dead.

If you don't dig those 2...you may not dig anything else I'm gonna push on you!

good point, it might be just because of the size of the series now. Both "Halloween" and "NOTLD" are both great starter movie. BOTH CLASSICS!!!

I knew this day would come, Lol!

Well, for starters...... the EVIL DEAD series. Extremely popular,
I am a huge fan(atic). But, the films are way overrated! Sorry! Every Goth/Punk or
person knows theses film(s). I liked it better when HORROR was underground, and
renting ones favorite Horror movie was fun. VHS was exciting to rent.
The so called Horror market is becoming way too convoluted. By that I mean,
really complex, intricate and on occasion sneaky, devious.......or maybe that's a good thing.

But, I feel the most overrated are the films made in the past tens years to present.
Definitely the SAW franchise!  Followed by Scream, Blair Witch Project, the Grudge.......
blah, blah, blah!!! So many overrated and horrible movies, too many to list. ;D

I can only concur w/most of you: Jason, Freddy, Halloween (& I've no intention of seeing Saw). To each their own, but I can take 'em or leave 'em.

I can be a crotchety a--hole. I'm fairly picky on what I spend $ on. I'd say 80% of anything (horror/sci-fi, even popular music/culture) after the mid 1980's has slim-to-no appeal to me. It's so disposable.

And Silence of the Lambs is NOT a horror film. It's a crime drama at best, about a sick, twisted serial killer. The popularity of this film just passes me by. You might as well give a mystique to sex offenders IMO.

See, I love Silence of the Lambs... but I agree it's NOT horror.  I don't identify with the killer or root for him, though.  I want him caught---but I am very intrigued by the killer.  I think iIf someone glamorizes Hannibal to the point where it obscures right and wrong, though-----I think THAT is curious to say the least.

People are fascinated by the bad guy a lot of times.  Many of us here ROOT for the monsters.  How many among us give even a MOMENT to the characters that the hugely SYMPATHETIC Kong killed----e.g., the woman on the train or the woman in the high-rise who he thought was Ann?  I know that in real life, there's concern that we may contribute to the making of the next Hannibal by giving attention------but that character's pathology goes deeper than 3rd party encouragement/ suggestion.

Frankenstein's monster is a largely sympathetic creature... yet he did horrible things to innocents.

I think the delineation is that it's fiction, no matter how true to life it is or could be.  If it's FICTION, it's safe to get lost in the story because movie watching and book reading are ESCAPES.  If someone starts being unable to separate the 2 (pretend and real life), then we have a problem.

Any movie that develops into a series immediately has problems with me.  I can still respect the original installment (like a Halloween), but 'Part 8s' are silly.

This is my problem I suppose, but where serial killers are concerned, I'm a bit tainted by my previous employment as an inmate caseworker. In that same vein, I don't enjoy shows like Criminal Minds, because the suspect is always some sicko/pervert. Again, I fail to see the fascination, but that's me.

I enjoy movies that feature gangs, organized crime, or the "common criminal". While they're no more admirable, their motive is (usually) profit &/or prestige, something most of us can ID with.

I agree, it's all fiction, & it IS safe to get lost in the story. But if & when I tell people I'm a fan of horror & monsters, I cringe when they bring up films like Silence of the Lambs & TX Chainsaw Massacre (& Freddy, Jason, Saw, etc.)

I would hazard to say that the Entertainment Industry I think kind of disputes this, as they usually refer to it as the only Horror  film to win an Academy Award.

Right on brother...

How about Hostel? The Village??? Even my own siblings/colleaugues rave about this junk., Saw included.

Silence of the Lambs is a thriller, you could argue horror based on the events, but I tend to want my horror as more fantasy. There is too much real horror out in the world. Another reason I don't feel all the torture movies.

Sounds like you prefer what sometimes is referred to as CLASSIC horror or FANTASY.  My preference lies there, too.  I like MONSTERS-----much more than people behaving badly/ wackos acting horridly.  Some people loathe the 'common criminal' shows because it's too close to their REAL lives and there's no escape there.
